EAGE NEWSLETTER MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA Middle East and Africa is now our terrain!

T

he big news for the EAGE office in Dubai is that we are now responsible for the Middle East and Africa regions combined under regional manager Raymond Cahill. He took on the challenge of raising the profile of EAGE on the African continent and establishing new events for members in the region. As regional manager for Middle East and Africa (MEA), Raymond will be working closely with EAGE president Jean-Jacques Biteau, who has been tireless in his efforts to promote the Association worldwide with our regional managers participating in events in many parts of the world including the US, the UK, Mozambique, Angola and Malaysia. Throughout his career, EAGE president Biteau spent a number of years in Africa on various E&P assignments. He has always been clear about how EAGE should develop and grow its community in the region, and was therefore happy to embark on a programme to develop a higher profile for the Association. Last October EAGE hosted its first Petroleum Exploration Workshop in Luanda, where JeanJacques delivered one of the keynote presentations. He shared some fond memories from

his years working in Angola in the late 1990s as exploration manager for Elf (now Total). The workshop, hosted by Total Angola, attracted almost 90 participants over three days and was also a great opportunity to develop our relationship with the local society ASGA and the EAGE Local Chapter. This trip was followed by Jean-Jacques’ visit to the 3rd Eastern African Petroleum Geoscience Forum which took place in Maputo, Mozambique last November. Another new location for EAGE activities, this forum saw its biggest number of participants since its launch in 2015. The opening ceremony was officiated by our president and the keynote address delivered by the Dutch Ambassador, H.E. Pascalle Grotenhuis. For Jean-Jacques it was ‘a fantastic event in this emerging gas giant’. The Middle East region similarly got the full backing of the president, with his visit to Saudi Arabia as guest of the Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS), who hosted a dinner meeting in his honor. He attended a number of meetings with key Saudi Aramco representatives from UPDC, EXPEC ARC, and had an opportunity to visit the Saudi Aramco Heritage Gallery and Museum. He met with the dean of King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) to get an overview of the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience and gave his own

Nairobi is venue for next Eastern Africa forum

I

t will be Nairobi’s turn to host EAGE’s Eastern Africa Forum when it convenes for the fourth time on 3-5 December 2018. The previous successful events were staged in Dar es Salaam (2015), Kampala (2016) and Maputo (2017). The objective for this now regular forum is to provide a platform for geoscientists and engineers to share knowledge and identify appropriate E&P technologies in the context of Eastern Africa, with the focus on understanding the petroleum geology of Eastern Africa. The EAGE Forum will hopefully again serve as a catalyst to bring academia and industry together with a shared goal. All the signs suggest a pick up in activity in the region. Recent major acreage acquisitions by IOCs have propelled eastern Africa into the spotlight once more, with new players gaining a foothold or consolidating their positions in offshore southern and eastern Africa and onshore Uganda and Kenya.
