he big news for the EAGE office in Dubai is that we are now responsible for the Middle East and Africa regions combined under regional manager Raymond Cahill. He took on the challenge of raising the profile of EAGE on the African continent and establishing new events for members in the region. As regional manager for Middle East and Africa (MEA), Raymond will be working closely with EAGE president Jean-Jacques Biteau, who has been tireless in his efforts to promote the Association worldwide with our regional managers participating in events in many parts of the world including the US, the UK, Mozambique, Angola and Malaysia. Throughout his career, EAGE president Biteau spent a number of years in Africa on various E&P assignments. He has always been clear about how EAGE should develop and grow its community in the region, and was therefore happy to embark on a programme to develop a higher profile for the Association. Last October EAGE hosted its first Petroleum Exploration Workshop in Luanda, where JeanJacques delivered one of the keynote presentations. He shared some fond memories from

his years working in Angola in the late 1990s as exploration manager for Elf (now Total). The workshop, hosted by Total Angola, attracted almost 90 participants over three days and was also a great opportunity to develop our relationship with the local society ASGA and the EAGE Local Chapter. This trip was followed by Jean-Jacques’ visit to the 3rd Eastern African Petroleum Geoscience Forum which took place in Maputo, Mozambique last November. Another new location for EAGE activities, this forum saw its biggest number of participants since its launch in 2015. The opening ceremony was officiated by our president and the keynote address delivered by the Dutch Ambassador, H.E. Pascalle Grotenhuis. For Jean-Jacques it was ‘a fantastic event in this emerging gas giant’. The Middle East region similarly got the full backing of the president, with his visit to Saudi Arabia as guest of the Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS), who hosted a dinner meeting in his honor. He attended a number of meetings with key Saudi Aramco representatives from UPDC, EXPEC ARC, and had an opportunity to visit the Saudi Aramco Heritage Gallery and Museum. He met with the dean of King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) to get an overview of the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience and gave his own

t will be Nairobi’s turn to host EAGE’s Eastern Africa Forum when it convenes for the fourth time on 3-5 December 2018. The previous successful events were staged in Dar es Salaam (2015), Kampala (2016) and Maputo (2017). The objective for this now regular forum is to provide a platform for geoscientists and engineers to share knowledge and identify appropriate E&P technologies in the context of Eastern Africa, with the focus on understanding the petroleum geology of Eastern Africa. The EAGE Forum will hopefully again serve as a catalyst to bring academia and industry together with a shared goal. All the signs suggest a pick up in activity in the region. Recent major acreage acquisitions by IOCs have propelled eastern Africa into the spotlight once more, with new players gaining a foothold or consolidating their positions in offshore southern and eastern Africa and onshore Uganda and Kenya. Second workshop planned for geosteering and well placement issues
F
ollowing the successful inaugural Workshop on Geosteering and Well Placement in 2016, EAGE and SPE are joining forces again to hold a second event in Abu Dhabi on 5-8 November 2018. Representatives from industry and academia have the oportunity to meet again to discuss the importance and technical drivers of geosteering and accurate well placement in the production of hydrocarbons. Geosteering is an area which combines all disciplines involved to ensure the flawless execution, from well placement to long term production. The organizing committee believes that the way forward is to share accumulated experience and discuss new technologies and ideas regarding real-time geosteering and its impact on maximizing reservoir flow. If there are to
be significant improvements to old practices in well drilling, all stakeholders need to become actively involved in the process. The committee encourages workers/experts from all disciplines involved in well design, well drilling, geosteering, geological modelling, completions and reservoir production to take part in the workshop. The committee also encourages students to attend and share their work and innovative spirit through poster sessions held during the workshop. The sharing of new ideas and approaches between young professionals and industry seniors is an extremely valuable step in the support of continuous improvement in geosteering and well placement practices. The call for abstracts is open until 15 May 2018. More information is available at www.eage.org.

Seventh Arabian Plate Geology Workshop is happening in Oman
L
ater this year there will be another great opportunity to learn about Arab Plate geology from the experts. On 9-13 December this year in Muscat, the EAGE Arabian Plate Geology workshop will be convening for no less than the seventh time in order to further understanding of this key regional structure. The theme of the upcoming workshop will be the deeper, challenging, and exiting sections from Pre-Cambrian to Paleozoic (mega sequence AP1 to AP5). These sections have diverse regional stra-
tigraphy which was likely the result of segmented basinal physiography, and recorded the Hercynian tectonic event and several glaciation events. In several parts of the plate the sections are buried very deep and drilling activity is limited. This resulted into sketchy data availability especially in off structure areas. The sections consist of known regional source and reservoir rocks. The core workshop is one of the highlights of the event, with selected cores from a number of producing and non-producing fields spanning the
entire Gulf region (Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) being displayed. Guided by specialists, rock-based discussions and experience sharing will provide a great opportunity for participants to develop a better understanding of the stratigraphy, sedimentology, diagenesis and petrography of these Pre-Cambrian to Paleozoic rocks. The workshop should be of interest to geoscience and engineering technical experts working in national and international operating and service companies, as well as academic institutions, with a working experience on Pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic in the Middle East or with a wish to discover/ understand these challenging series. The successful format of the previous workshops will be in evidence again, to include the stratigraphic framework, sedimentology, stratigraphic evolution, tectonic modelling, core sessions, and poster sessions. In addition, two-days of fascinating field trips on the Ediacaran Nafun Group and the Cambrian-Ordovician Amdeh Formation of Oman will follow the main event. Oral presentations and poster submissions are encouraged. The call for abstracts is open until 15 July 2018. More information can be found at www.eage.org.

second EAGE/AAPG Workshop on Hydrocarbon Seals in the Middle East is scheduled for Abu Dhabi on 16-19 April
2018. The workshop will highlight the latest developments in analyzing seals of hydrocarbon traps in the Middle East with a variety of applications from a regional perspective to field scale. The significance of the event is that as the basins of the Middle East reach a mature exploration phase, more emphasis is being directed towards understanding hydrocarbon seals through multi-disciplinary data and workflows. The proposed workshop will build on the successful first event to offer several case studies integrating geological, geophysical and engineering data in novel ways to define and map
hydrocarbon seals. Oral presentations and posters will cover a variety of aspects including the role of sedimentation, tectonics, diagenesis, pressure distribution on the development and effectiveness of seals. There will be a special focus on inferences about hydrocarbon seals from geochemical data and charge analysis. Moreover, the workshop will show-cast discoveries made by the integration of seismic, special core analysis, petrophysical, geochemical, pressure, and production data to evaluate hydrocarbon seals. The workshop invites all those in the industry interested in sharing their knowledge of the subject and learning from local experiences with perspectives from outside the region. Workshop to show key contribution of petroleum geochemistry
M
uscat from 1-4 October is where you need to be if you want to catch EAGE’s second Workshop on Petroleum Geochemistry in Operations & Production. This is the follow-up to the successful event held in Doha in 2016. The workshop will focus on organic and hydrogeochemical processes from nanometer scale to basin scale. It will include: oraganic and hydrogeochemistry processes, oil alteration and mineral reactions leading to CO2
4

formation, coupled H2S formation, scaling prediction for wellbore and reservoir, advances in geochemical modelling and analytical techniques, innovation in sampling, and case studies for the above mentioned topics. Keynote speakers will provide an overview of stakes and challenges as an introduction to the workshop. The event will be organized around a balance of oral presentations and group discussions in order to encourage exchanges between participants. A poster session will be
made available for contributors who prefer to showcase their material in this format. The significance of this event is that even though the barrel price increased significantly in recent months, its volatility remains important. Reducing exploration and production costs has become a permanent mantra for E&P companies. Thus economic considerations put technical pressure to reinvent new operating concepts. Our permanent capability to innovate is key to the future of the energy sector. Each idea that allows companies to be more efficient, deliver more rapidly or provide more added value needs, now more than ever, to be tested, validated and implemented. Times of crisis are also times of opportunity, in this case for geochemists to share knowledge and to demonstrate added value for operations and production. The workshop welcomes not only geochemists but reservoir engineers, geologists from NOCs, IOCs, service companies and academics who can benefit from the event. EAGE UPDATE
EAGE joins with SPE to widen audience for third Middle East geomechanics workshop
E
AGE is aiming for a big attendance for the Third Workshop on Geomechanics in E&P to be held in Abu Dhabi on 2-3 May 2018. The theme of ‘Brown Fields and Unconventionals’ has been chosen to attract a global audience, with particular interest to the Middle East region. In addition, EAGE is joining forces with SPE to bring a combined workshop. The technical steering committee says it wants to encourage participation across the entire E&P industry including NOCs, IOCs, service companies, academic institutions, and researchers. The workshop presentations and discussions will focus on how geomechanics is currently being used and how it can play an important role in maximising recovery from diverse and challenging environments. In the Middle East more oil and gas needs to be recovered from (giant carbonate) reservoirs, which have been under production for decades. The potential of unconventional and tight gas
reservoirs are also being viewed to provide energy for a rapidly growing region. The mandate from governments is to reach higher ultimate recoveries whilst limiting environmental impacts and maximizing profits for economic expansion. In this context, brown fields bring challenges in extending well lifetimes, drilling infill wells and in drilling through depleted reservoirs to access new ones. The combined effects of depletion and injection mean that evaluation of well integrity, caprock integrity, fault reactivation and sanding must all be evaluated and monitored. Unconventional fields require considerable planning of well locations, spacing and stimulation strategies. This must be combined with predictions of flow rates through fractures and long-term production. Six sessions are planned for the workshop to gain a better understanding of subsurface characterisation and dependency on accurate data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Four sessions aim to cover: treatment of data

and how to improve reliability; current status and benefits of field monitoring; application of data and models to improving recovery and efficiency; and keeping development and operating costs down. The other two sessions will look ahead at upcoming technology and how geomechanics can be best positioned in the future. For further workshop information, go to www.eage.org.
