STRONGER TOGETHER: STABILIZING, ENHANCING, AND EXPANDING EAGE

President’s

REPORT 2015 –2016

My year as the elected president of EAGE has been deeply affected by forces beyond our control, namely the very difficult economic climate for the oil and gas industry in which most of our members are employed. I chose as the theme for my year in office ‘Stronger together: stabilizing, enhancing and expanding EAGE’. It expressed how I, and my colleagues on the Board, would try to steer the Association through these troubled waters focused on maintaining the integrity of our services to members through careful management of our resources. My impression, from the many members in the geoscience and engineering community that I have had the privilege to meet in the last year, is that our efforts are appreciated. This has not been an easy journey, but I believe we have set the Association on a sustainable path for the future. Internally we have instituted some important procedural changes to increase efficiency and accountability. Among other things, we have restructured organizational responsibilities between Finance, Development, Operations and Regions and introduced more transparent and accessible communication between the Board and EAGE’s senior management. With an eye on costs, we expect staff numbers to reduce through natural attrition. Given the circumstances, I am proud of the accomplishments we managed to achieve. For example, both our external and internal IT systems are being renewed and we have launched the long awaited Resource Evaluation Committee. Internationally, the Association has been significantly expanding its profile in Africa and China with new events and the formation of student and local chapters. In 2015–2016 we also signed MOUs with seven new affiliated societies worldwide. A major landmark

in the year was the launch of our new office in Bogota, Colombia opening up a wealth of opportunities for EAGE in the Latin American region. Increasing our services to members worldwide really began with the Russia & CIS and the Middle East regions. I must therefore congratulate the Moscow and Dubai offices on their 10th anniversary and their many achievements to date. Meantime our basic mission, spearheaded by our conferences, workshops and courses, our publications, and the promotion of special interest groups has stayed on course with only minimal disruption. Introducing the EAGE Economic Hardship Programme has enabled us to make events more affordable for those members facing financial difficulties. We have continued to provide ever more possibilities for students and young professionals worldwide, and the growth in our Student Chapter numbers reflects the success of these efforts. I would like to conclude by thanking our members, volunteers, fellow Board members, HQ and regional staff who all have toiled so valiantly to fulfill our goals regardless of the circumstances. I wish all of you the best of luck for the upcoming year.

President’s

PREVIEW 2016–2017

I very much look forward to the coming year as president of EAGE. Having already served on the Board for some time, I believe that we are set on the right strategy to meet the interests of our members in what have been exceptionally difficult times for the oil and gas industry. Our three pillars of strength are the commitment to globalization, membership growth and the provision of a one-stop shop for knowledge and community in the geosciences. Our challenge now is to consolidate and enhance what we have. This is why my theme for the year will be ‘Growth and Diversity’. A good index of our state of health as a professional Association was the Vienna 2016 Annual Meeting. Our feedback suggests that our flagship multi-disciplinary event was well received by those who participated and once again met the demand for learning, sharing knowledge and basic networking with professional colleagues from around the world. We are also confident that the Near Surface Geoscience 2016 event in September, combining Environmental and Engineering Geophysics, Applied Shallow Marine Geophysics and Mineral Exploration and Mining will meet the needs of our members in these different and important disciplines. We have the opportunity to capitalize on our strong portfolio of conferences, workshops, courses, publications and a rapidly expanding digital footprint. In general this requires more support for regional initiatives such as increasing cooperation with global and country specific professional societies, encouraging local chapters and making sure all our services are easily accessible. I believe our continuing focus on the recruitment of a new generation of students to our various disciplines through conference programmes, student chapters and our series of geoscience-related boot camps will pay dividends for the Association in the years to come. Diversity also means

4

inclusiveness, and the enthusiasm for the Women in Geoscience and Engineering and Young Professionals special interest groups bodes well for the future. All our good intentions can of course only be achieved with prudent financial management. A restructured, cost-effective and stable organization has been a focus of the Board over the last two years. Meanwhile our management has done well to manage costs - staff reductions through natural attrition and other measures - in line with inevitably depleted revenues. As a result we should be in a good position to thrive when the current cycle sees an upturn. Finally, I should say that I feel honoured to be president for 2016–2017, working with colleagues on the Board, our staff and many volunteers that make our Association one to be proud of. I am especially excited to have the opportunity to meet as many members as possible during the course of the year, and to hear how we may progress the Association’s goals together.

CHRIS WARD  |  EAGE PRESIDENT 2016-2017

COOPERATION

AND COMMUNITIES EAGE holds cooperation and interaction with its communities, local chapters, sister organizations, and associated societies close at heart. In line with its mission to cater for the worldwide geoscience and engineering community, EAGE has strengthened the existing ties in 2015–2016, welcomed new cooperations and continued to develop initiatives started in previous years.

COMMUNITIES One of the main goals of EAGE is to be able to serve our members better globally. Therefore, the Association focuses on development of its communities. At the center of our efforts to further enhance membership value are EAGE’s special interest communities as well as communities, such as local and student chapters. They serve as platforms where members meet and exchange information, experiences and knowledge in specific fields that they are most interested in.

WOMEN IN GEOSCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (WGE SIC) The Women in Geoscience and Engineering Special Interest Community aims to be a worldwide reference group for women in geosciences and engineering. It was created by EAGE to facilitate communication amongst women and to promote their active participation in EAGE related activities. Its mission is to enable exchange and mutual support among EAGE members, particularly women, for increased professional competitiveness and retention in the geoscience/engineering industry through promoting scientific knowledge, mentoring and guidance on career development. Explaining the mission, 2013–2015 chairperson Nadia Al-Zeabot stated: “As we have a large number of talented professional women across the globe, the WGE SIC aims to provide them with a platform for networking

14

and to promote activities that increases their participation in technical committees, awards nominations, workshops, courses and many other activities to share their experience and pass on knowledge.”

in the early stages of their careers. It was created to ensure that an active community of young professionals exists within the EAGE and that the expectations of its members can be better articulated.

The WGE SIC is led by a committee: six EAGE female members volunteer to take responsibility for leading roles within the community for a period of two years.

The community aims to provide an ideal platform for young professionals to start establishing their presence in the industry, share experience and knowledge and be situated in the right place for networking within the global oil and gas industry. It facilitates worldwide communication between members of the network and promotes the inclusive participation of YPs in related EAGE activities.

“Being Part of the EAGE Group helped me increase my network in a brand new and interesting direction. Sharing post, ideas, experience, solutions with the committee and other members of the group certainly had a huge impact on the way I am now envisioning my career and family life and making it all work in a great synergy!” Caroline Le Turdu – EAGE WGE Chair While using a dedicated LinkedIn group as the main online communication platform, the community members meet and engage in person every year during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition, during which they organize a special session. In Vienna the session consisted of two keynote speeches from Ceri Powell (Shell) and Wiebke Athmer (Schlumberger), followed by several round table discussions. The fast growing community currently consists of over 740 members (both EAGE members and non-members).

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS (YP SIC) The Young Professional Special Interest Community (YP SIC) is aimed at industry professionals, aged 35 or under,

In 2016, the committee was expanded to further improve on the interaction and activities of the YP SIC. The seven EAGE YP members volunteer to take responsibility for the different aspects within the YP SIC for a period of two years. To emphasize its commitment towards the community, EAGE annually presents the Arie van Weelden Award to a young professional who has made a highly significant contribution to one or more of the disciplines in our Association. The YP SIC currently consists of over 590 members. As the community keeps growing, the aim is to build on the first years’ activities. The EAGE Young Professionals use a dedicated LinkedIn group as the main on-line communication platform, as well as next to a yearly meeting during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition. The 2016–2018 committee will increase the activity on the LinkedIn Group by weekly posting links, including interviews of young professionals in First Break, and fostering discussions among the members.

15

“I believe that being active in the YP community is at least as important as doing good technical work. In my opinion, the YP SIC is the best platform for a young geoscientist to exchange knowledge and experience with peers that have just started or are thinking about pursuing a career in this field. I was very enthusiastic to hear that EAGE has clear plans to grow further and organize more events like the Young Professionals Session at the Annual Conference as well as strengthening our presence in the social media by constantly providing tips and arguments for discussion, and I am excited that I can contribute to fulfil these goals.” Matteo Ravasi – new EAGE YP committee member.

LOCAL CHAPTERS Another way to reach out to our members globally is through EAGE Local Chapters. The aim of EAGE Local Chapters is to stimulate involvement within EAGE and promote the A ssociation’s activities as well as geoscience in general, in a specific city or region. EAGE helps to support training and education of the members of the Local Chapter. Local Chapters encourage EAGE membership in their region and facilitate communication between local members and the EAGE Head Office. Every year, EAGE awards one Chapter to recognize their exceptionally active and engaging involvement. In 2016, the Committee on Membership and Co-operation decided to grant not one but two Chapters with the EAGE Best Local Chapter Award: Local Chapter Serbia and Local Chapter China. Representatives of EAGE Local Chapters are invited to a dedicated Local Chapter Summit organized during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition to present their chapters’ activities, meet their colleagues from other Local Chapters and to exchange ideas and experiences.

16

COOPERATION As a global association, catering for individuals working in or studying geosciences and related engineering subjects across the world, EAGE aspires to establish and maintain close ties with a wide variety of societies and associations.

ASSOCIATED SOCIETIES EAGE has close ties with various Associated Societies across the globe, aiming to combine local strengths and expertise of the Associated Society with an international platform and professional support of the EAGE. Every year, EAGE invites representatives from all Associated Societies to attend the Annual Conference & Exhibition in order to increase their international exposure and highlight their upcoming activities. Likewise, events organized by Associated Societies are often attended by a representative of the EAGE to further strengthen the ties between our associations. Also, when the opportunity arises, events are organized in close cooperation with other societies in order to serve the community best. During 2015–2016 EAGE welcomed new cooperation agreements with the Brazilian Geological Society (BGS), the Iranian Petroleum Geomechnicas Association (IrPGA), the Moroccan Association of Geosciences (MAG), the Myanmar Geoscience Society (MGS), the Romanian Society of Applied Geophysics (RSAG) and the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS), bringing the current number of Associated Societies to 68.

SISTER SOCIETIES In addition to the Associated Societies, EAGE also aims to maintain close ties and create cooperation with its sister societies in order to serve the industry even better. These have resulted in various shared enterprises such as joint conferences and workshops on specific topics. There are currently cooperations with AAPG, EEGS, EGU, FESM, PESGB, SEG, SPE, and The Geological Society of London.

WITH SEVEN NEW ASSOCIATED SOCIETIES, EAGE NOW HAS A TOTAL OF 68 WORLDWIDE

TO IMPROVE DIVERSITY AND INTERACTION BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION

SOCIAL MEDIA

EAGE is certainly intensifying its presence in the world of social media. This strategy is a great opportunity to interact with members in creating, sharing and exchanging information and ideas. Furthermore, it enables the Association to reach a greater number of geoscientists, engineers and others outside its membership database. As social media becomes more and more important in the business world, EAGE strives to stay active on all its channels and further explore new marketing possibilities for EAGE activities on social media.

22

At the moment EAGE is active on the following platforms LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. In its LinkedIn profile, EAGE has several groups: regional, annual, students and the special interest groups – Young Professionals and Women in Geoscience.

The number of Instagram followers has increased significantly over the past months, spiking from 20 to 157 after Vienna 2016.

Events are promoted on a daily basis in order to obtain maximum attention to a Call for Abstracts or Registration Deadline, etc. It enables the Association to directly update the membership community and it allows our subscribers and members to interact with EAGE by posting, commenting, or for example, retweeting the message. It also leaves the option to ask questions that can be immediately answered in a post, a private message or in an EAGE Hangout on LinkedIn. Additionally, EAGE offers E-Lectures on YouTube, prize questions for book promotions and impressing geoscience-related pictures on Instagram. During EAGE’s Annual Conference & Exhibition in Vienna, social media platforms were updated at least twice a day. This serves as a great example of how social media can be implemented onsite to interact with delegates and involve them in daily activities. Below graph shows the follower’s growth on social media up to and including EAGE’s 78th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Vienna.

AFRICA

LAST YEAR EAGE WAS WORKING ON ESTABLISHING A FOOTHOLD IN AFRICA AND WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE ARE NOW IN THE IMPLEMENTATION STAGE. A REGIONAL MANAGER HAS BEEN SELECTED TO DEVELOP THE WHOLE OF AFRICA FOR EAGE AND ITS MEMBERS. IN THE COMING YEARS HE WILL SEE YEARS TO WORK CLOSELY WITH INDUSTRY AND LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS TO SUPPORT THEIR ACTIVITIES AND BRING EAGE’S OPPORTUNITIES TO A WIDER AUDIENCE WITHIN AFRICA. EAGE SUCCESSFULLY RAN THE FIRST EASTERN AFRICA PETROLEUM FORUM IN DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA, NOVEMBER 2015, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY 72 PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS FOR A 4 DAY PROGRAMME. AS A RESULT OF THIS FORUM EAGE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LAUNCH THE FIRST STUDENT CHAPTER IN EASTERN AFRICA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM. THIS FORUM WAS ALSO THE START OF COOPERATION BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR LOCAL COUNTERPARTS TO START ON A CLOSER COLLABORATION WHICH HAS ALREADY SEEN SUCCESS. WITH MEMBERSHIP IN AFRICA BEING STAGNANT FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, EAGE WILL MAKE A VERY STRONG EFFORT TO BUILD ON ITS CURRENT MEMBERS AS A KEY GOAL FOR THE YEAR AHEAD.

EARTHDAT EarthDat (www.earthdat.org) is a portal to geophysical models and software. The website provides extensive search functionality. The website was launched for EAGE members to: •  Stimulate the use of common models •  Use existing models/data from major efforts in the past •  Stimulate use of models and methods across disciplines, e.g., seismology and seismic exploration •  Stimulate use of open software, programmed at the academia level and/or companies •  Stimulate standardizations EarthDat offers specific support for Education and Research & Development (benchmarking and testing).

REGIONAL NEWSLETTERS Regional newsletters were successfully launched in 2010. In 2014 a Student newsletter was also added to this collection. The 8-20 page newsletters supply EAGE members and other industry professionals in the region with the latest information on EAGE activities; at the same time, they are a helpful resource to identify and introduce key personnel and organizations who share our goal of strengthening cooperation and shared knowledge in the geoscience and engineering community. The newsletters are distributed via First Break and via events and digital means. All newsletters are also available on the EAGE website. Newsletters are available for the following regions: •  Asia Pacific •  Latin America •  Middle East •  Russia & CIS •  Students

INITIATIVES THE OBJECTIVES OF EAGE IS TO PROMOTE AND FOSTER DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE GEOSCIENCES. TO DO SO EAGE HAS UNDERTAKEN VARIOUS INITIATIVES TO MAKE SUCH DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE ON A GLOBAL SCALE AND HAVE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE WORLD WE ARE A PART OF.

STUDENT FUND The EAGE Student Fund is a charity that funds activities that help bridge the gap between the university and professional environment for students of geoscience and engineering. In collaboration with the Student Affairs Committee, containing representatives from major industry companies and universities, EAGE is successfully building and promoting geoscience and engineering on a global scale in order to broaden the students’ minds and create worldly candidates for careers in the geoscientific industry.

VISION The Fund’s vision is to support and improve the future of geoscience and create the foundation of a student’s future career in terms of knowledge, skills and networks.

MISSION The Fund’s mission is to support student activities that help bridge the gap between the university and the professional environment and create a platform for both students as well as geoscience professionals.

SUPPORTED BY

PACE SUPPORT FUND The Programme for Association and Co-operation in Earth sciences (PACE) supports individual geoscientists from developing countries to participate actively in our events. In connection with one of EAGE’s main goals, ‘to promote the application of geosciences’, the PACE fund strives to encourage the exchange of information and knowledge among the global geoscientific community. PACE is coordinated by the PACE Committee, consisting of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman, a Secretary-Treasurer and several representatives. The Committee members convene regularly to discuss projects to support. Between July 2015 – June 2016, the PACE fund was able to support 90 geoscientists for all over the world.

GREEN FUND

GREEN FUND

For many years, EAGE has been contributing to the offset of the carbon footprint of our speakers who travel all over the world to give lectures. In 2010, the EAGE Board decided to launch the EAGE Green Fund.

EAGE GREEN FUND FACTS •  From all registration fees for EAGE events one euro (€1) will be put in to the Green Fund •  This will be supplemented with a contribution by EAGE •  The money raised in this way will be utilized to initiate and support geoscience and engineering environmental initiatives. •  No increase in cost for our members! This programme, in response to membership wishes, brings together initiatives regarding EAGE’s events and operations including reduction and compensation of emissions, reducing nature source consumption, reducing and recycling waste and offering more sustainable facilities. Several ideas have already been launched, such as installing solar panels at the EAGE Head Office. Currently the Green Fund supports two other initiatives; protecting 20,000 m2 of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, in co-operation with Oasebos, and a patented water-making system in Madagascar which is able to produce drinking water through condensation of humid air in co-operation with Eole Water. We are looking for new initiatives to support during 2016–2017: these can be submitted via greenfund@eage.org.
