President’s

REPORT 2014 -2015

My presidential aim for 2014-2015 was to make the Association more sustainable, and towards that aim I’m really proud that we have grown in both quality and quantity. The number of EAGE members has continued to grow, we now have almost 19,000 members. Our event portfolio has also been strenghtened and sustained, for example the Sustainable Earth Science Conference series which has the third Conference & Exhibition coming up this year. Progress has also been made in the global growth of EAGE, supporting its members worldwide. We have put on the first EAGE workshop in India, the first EAGE workshop in East Africa and there has been significant growth in the workshop portfolio in Asia and especially in Kuala Lumpur. We have continued to put on new events in Latin America, mainly as partnerships with sister societies; there has been a continuing strong programme in Russia and CIS regions; and we put on the first Geoscience Conference in Myanmar, with sister societies. I’m also delighted to say that our student chapters continue to grow. In 2014 EAGE counted 28 active student chapters. This year we have not only made progress through growth, but also through inspiring initiatives such as the first EAGE Middle East Geo-Creativity Prize. The oil industry has been home to many great advances in computing, subsurface imaging and geological knowledge. I firmly believe that innovation in quantitative geoscience has the potential to make a huge difference in the effective use of the Earth’s resources. Internally EAGE has also undergone various changes. A new management structure was approved at the Athens Board meeting. The new office structure includes three divisions: Development, Operations (which includes events and publications), and Regional Development. The idea behind this is to devolve more authority and make sure that the different functions of EAGE work well. The new divisions are broadly focused on improved service to members, more cost effective events

and improved engagement with our globalized world and I firmly believe that they will deliver that and help the Association continue to grow and thrive. I would also like to extend a big welcome to Marcel van Loon as our new Executive Director and I am confident that he will make a great success of the role. I am really pleased to hand over the tiller to Mohammed Alfaraj. Mohammed brings a sound background in geophysics and an international perspective to the presidency. I believe he will be a ‘steady pair of hands’ to take the EAGE into a somewhat uncertain but highly promising future. I must express my respect and appreciation to the staff both at Houten HQ and in the regional offices for their hard work in ensuring that we meet and exceed our goals. By the same token, we as an Association owe a huge debt of gratitude to those members who volunteer their time in so many ways, hopefully their example will encourage others. Finally, may I extend special thanks to the Board members with whom I have worked and wish the new Board every success in the coming year.

President’s

PREVIEW 2015 -2016

It is a great honour and privilege for me to serve as your president for 2015-2016 in one of the most challenging, but also the most exciting times in its history. I am confident that the EAGE will emerge ‘stronger together’. There has never been a more challenging time to become president of the EAGE with low oil prices causing hardship in the oil and gas industry. In addition the Association has been undertaking some of the biggest structural changes in its history. ‘Stronger together: stabilizing, enhancing, and expanding the EAGE’ is my vision for the Association and embraces the established core values of EAGE as a professional geoscience and engineering society while at the same time provide an optimistic tone for opportunities that lie ahead in these challenging times. It is all about team work in achieving the goals that we have set. In practice, my aim will be to engage the Board, management and staff, the membership as well as relevant non-EAGE entities in order to meet objectives. I start at a time when the EAGE is in the process of bedding in a new management structure, with responsibilities divided into Development, Operations (which includes events and publications), and Regions. I am confident that the Association will function more effectively as a result and deliver improved service to members and more cost-effective quality events. Change is never straight forward but we believe most of the issues have been resolved. Of course there is still plenty of work ahead. Top of my list of priorities is the completion of a formal Governance document, which will be complemented with two more guiding documents by the end of the year – a Code of Conduct as well as a set of Norms. I would like to steer towards a protocol for the handling of intellectual property matters, while the Association’s

Bylaws and Constitution will be subject to some revisions, hopefully by early next year. I am looking forward to addressing the Association’s global role. One ambition is to increase the membership by about 5% from the current mark of almost 19,000 to above the 20,000 mark for the first time. One help here should be the forthcoming opening of the EAGE office in Bogota, Colombia, which will serve the entire South American continent as well as Central America. On global expansion, we are determined to have more geoscience and engineering societies from around the world affiliated with us to leverage our rich geoscientific and engineering offerings; we have set a minimum target of four new affiliates that we would like to add over the course of one year. I believe we will reach our goal, especially as our presence grows in Latin America and Asia Pacific. We also expect to establish a solid foothold in Africa to serve the whole continent. Between the strong Board I have the fortune to be leading, the excellent staff in our Business offices, and of course you, the members, we can go beyond the barrier of distance and language to partner in our common objective of promoting the innovative development and application of geoscience and engineering.

BOARD Every year in spring, the members of EAGE elect the new EAGE Board. The new Board is presented during EAGE’s annual conference & exhibition. The EAGE Board consists of 10 professionals in various fields with an academic and / or an industry background. The Board plays an important advisory role in the activities that EAGE offers throughout the year. New in the 2015-2016 Board are Jean-Jacques Biteau, Everhard Muijzert and Karl Berteussen. We would like to thank our Board members of 2014-2015 for their valuable contribution to EAGE and wish the new Board members of all the best in their new position.

DIVISIONAL COMMIT TEES EAGE operates two divisions: the Oil & Gas Geoscience Division and the Near Surface Geoscience Division. For both divisions, a committee is in place. The purpose of the Oil and Gas Geoscience Division is to represent and promote the interests of its members and to ensure that each of the Oil and Gas Geoscience disciplines of geophysics, geology and reservoir engineering is adequately represented within EAGE and its functional committees. The Near Surface Geoscience Division represents the interests of its members who work in geophysical, geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeological, archaeological and other fields of investigation of the shallow subsurface.

COMMIT TEES In addition to the Board and Divisional Committees, EAGE also has a number of permanent committees in place. The committees of EAGE consist of professionals from the field advising EAGE about a certain topic, such as the technical programme, education matters, research, membership affairs and more. We would like to thank all volunteers from the committees for their efforts over the past year.

COOPERATION

AND COMMUNITIES EAGE holds cooperation and interaction with its communities, local chapters, sister organizations, and associated societies close at heart. In line with its mission to cater for the worldwide geoscience and engineering community, EAGE has strengthened the existing ties in 2014-2015, welcomed new cooperations and continued to develop initiatives started in previous years.

COMMUNITIES The reason for the focus on development of EAGE communities is to be able to serve our members better globally. At the center of our efforts to further enhance the value of membership are EAGE’s special interest communities as well as local communities, such as local and student chapters. They serve as platforms where members meet and exchange information, experiences, and knowledge in specific fields that they are most interested in.

WOMEN IN GEOSCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (WGE SIC) The WGE SIC aims to be a worldwide reference group for women in geosciences and engineering. It was created by EAGE to facilitate communication amongst women and to promote their active participation in EAGE related activities. Its mission is to enable the exchange and mutual support among EAGE members, particularly women, for increased professional competitiveness and retention in the geoscience/engineering industry through promoting scientific knowledge, mentoring and guidance on career development. Explaining the mission, 2013-2015 chairperson Nadia Al-Zeabot states: ‘As we have a large number of talented professional women across the globe, WGE SIC aims to provide them with a platform for networking and to

14

18122-BW Annual Report 2015.indd 14

16/09/15 16:51

promote activities that increases their participation in technical committees, awards nominations, workshops, courses, and many other activities to share their experience and pass on knowledge.’ The WGE SIC is led by a committee. Six EAGE female members volunteer take responsibility for leading roles within the community for a period of two years. While using a dedicated LinkedIn group as the main on-line communication platform, the community members meet and engage in person every year during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition, during which they organize a special session. In Madrid the session was visited by 120 people. The fast growing community currently consists of over 400 members. ‘We encourage all women to join WGE SIC on LinkedIn, get involved in posted discussions, and participate in future activities to enrich themselves as well as others with an influential exchange of thoughts, experiences and support from the rapidly growing female community within our industry.’ Nadia Al-Zeabot

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS (YP SIC) The Young Professional Special Interest Community (YP SIC) is aimed at industry professionals (aged 35 or under) in the early stages of their careers. It was created to ensure that an active community of young professionals exists within the EAGE, and that the expectations of its members can be better articulated.

The community aims to provide an ideal platform for young professionals to start establishing their presence in the industry, share experience and knowledge, and be situated in the right place for networking within the global oil and gas industry. It facilitates worldwide communication between members of the network, and promotes the inclusive participation of YPs in related EAGE activities. The YP SIC is led by three EAGE YP members, who volunteer to take responsibility for the different aspects within the YP SIC for a period of two years. To emphasize its commitment towards the community, EAGE annually presents the Arie van Weelden Award to a young professional who has made a highly significant contribution to one or more of the disciplines in our Association. For 2015, the eligibility for this award has been changed to be in line with that for membership of the YP SIC, and EAGE Awards Committee chair Phil Christie reported that ‘…the van Weelden category attracted five top-class candidates this year, increasing last year’s nominations in both number and overall strength, most probably due to the harmonisation of age qualification with EAGE young professionals.’ The YP SIC currently consists of over 350 members. As the community keeps growing, the aim is to build on the first year’s activities. Similar to the WGE SIC, the EAGE Young Professionals use a dedicated LinkedIn group as the main on-line communication platform, next to a yearly meeting during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition.

15

18122-BW Annual Report 2015.indd 15

16/09/15 16:51

Dr Filippo Broggini, YP SIC Chair: “All young professionals are invited to join the LinkedIn group to participate in discussions and to discover the opportunities available. These opportunities range from involvement in reviewing material for the Annual Meeting, to co-chairing technical sessions, and especially participating in the organisation of future events for young professionals.”

LOCAL CHAPTERS

COOPERATION As a global association, catering for individuals working in or studying geosciences and related engineering subjects across the world, EAGE aspires to establish and maintain close ties with a wide variety of societies and associations.

ASSOCIATED SOCIETIES EAGE has close ties with various Associated Societies across the globe, aimed to combine local strengths and expertise of the associated society with international platform and professional support of the EAGE.

Another way to reach out to our members globally is through EAGE Local Chapters. The aim of EAGE Local Chapters is to stimulate involvement within EAGE and promote the Association’s activities, as well as geoscience in general, in a specific city or region. EAGE helps to support training and education of the members of the Local Chapter. Local Chapters encourage EAGE membership in their region and facilitate communication between local members and the EAGE Head Office. Every year, EAGE awards one Chapter to recognize their exceptionally active and engaging involvement. The EAGE Best Local Chapter Award 2015 has been granted to the Local Chapter Greece.

Every year, EAGE invites representatives from all Associated Societies to attend the Annual Conference & Exhibition to increase their international exposure and highlight their upcoming activities. Likewise, events organized by associated societies are often attended by a representative of the EAGE to further strengthen the ties between our associations. Also, when the opportunity arises, events are organized in close cooperation with other societies in order to serve the community best.

Representatives of EAGE Local Chapters are invited to a dedicated Local Chapter Summit organized during the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition to present their chapters’ activities, meet their colleagues from other Local Chapters, and to exchange ideas and experiences.

SISTER SOCIETIES

More information about the EAGE Student Chapters can be found on page 66.

In 2014-2015 EAGE welcomed new cooperation agreements with the APG (India), SASEG (Switzerland) and HAGI (Indonesia), bringing the current number of Associated Societies to 61.

In addition to the Associated Societies, EAGE also aims to maintain close ties and create cooperation with its sister societies in order to serve the industry even better. These have resulted in various shared enterprises such as joint conferences and workshops on specific topics. There are currently cooperations with AAPG, EEGS, EGU, FESM, PESGB, SEG, SPE, and The Geological Society of London.

Stronger together is the message for success My personal journey with EAGE’s professional organization began by helping to initiate a number of regional and international events, including the first-ever workshop on Passive Seismic, Mohammed Alfaraj EAGE president 2015-2016

D

r Mohammed Alfaraj, president EAGE, writes: It is a special honour for me to be able to address you, my fellow EAGE members in the Middle East region, as new president of this most prestigious association serving a worldwide membership. I can speak from personal experience in testifying to the great strides EAGE has made from its office in Dubai in playing an increasingly significant role in our local geoscience community. The services it offers in education, knowledge sharing and promotion of new technology and ideas have great tangible value. In addition, the professional networking made possible by the global reach of the EAGE’s membership and activities is a huge benefit in itself. Nor should we forget the increasing focus on fostering the next generation of professional geoscientists and engineers.

Trivia Question Which of the following factors do NOT contribute to abnormal formation pressures? A - Hydrostatic pressure B - Clay diagenesis C - Osmosis D - Permafrost

which I chaired in 2006 in Dubai. I am proud to say that the workshop has been run on a biennial basis ever since, the latest being in 2014 in Lisbon, Portugal. I was also involved in the introduction of the first Subsalt Imaging Workshop in Cairo in 2009 (now organized jointly with the SPE) and the biennial Borehole Seismic workshop which I chaired in 2011 and 2013 in Istanbul and Malta, respectively. Later I served as a member of the Middle East Regional Council of the EAGE from 2010 to 2013, as an EAGE Board Advisor representing the Middle East from 2011 to 2013, and as an EAGE Board member for more than two years. We are very fortunate to host a wide range of well-established EAGE-related events tailored to address the specific regional issues of geoscientists and engineers operating in the Middle East. Joint workshops with sister societies are also on the agenda, including three with AAPG addressing Tight Reservoirs, Hydrocarbon Seals in the Middle East, and Shale Gas, and two with SPE on Subsalt Imaging and Geosteering. Another collaboration is the major GEO conference and exhibition, organized and developed by the EAGE, AAPG and SEG with support from local regional societies. The IPTC is planned for December in Doha and promises to be another major occasion for the oil and gas industry. Popular workshops such as Rock Physics are running again and in 2016 we already have another 14 events on schedule for you. I would like to highlight the workshops on Oil & Gas Business Analytics, and Broadband Seismic, as well as the Middle East Boot Camp. This last event is the first of its kind, aimed at

PACE SUPPORT FUND The Programme for Association and Co-operation in Earth sciences (PACE) supports individual geoscientists from developing countries to participate actively in our events. In connection with one of EAGE’s main goals, “to promote the application of geosciences”, the PACE fund strives to encourage the exchange of information and knowledge among the global geoscientific community. PACE is coordinated by the PACE Committee, consisting of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman, a SecretaryTreasurer and several representatives. The Committee members convene regularly to discuss projects to support and are in close contact with societies and institutions in many countries. Between July 2014 - June 2015, the PACE fund was able to support 90 geoscientists for all over the world and expects to be able to help more in the future.

GREEN FUND For many years, EAGE has been contributing to the offset of the carbon footprint of our speakers who travel all over the world to give lectures. In 2010, the EAGE Board decided to launch the EAGE Green Fund. GREEN FUND

FACTS EAGE GREEN FUND • From all registration fees for EAGE events one euro (€1) will be put in the Green Fund • This will be supplemented with a contribution by EAGE • The money raised in this way will be utilized to initiate and support geoscience and engineering environmental initiatives. • No increase in cost for our members! This programme, in response to membership wishes, brings together initiatives regarding EAGE’s events and operations including reduction and compensation of emissions, reducing nature source consumption, reducing and recycling waste and offering more sustainable facilities. Many ideas have already been launched, such as installing solar panels for the EAGE Head Office. Currently the Green Fund supports two other inititives; protecting 20,000 m2 of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, in co-operation with Oasebos, and a patented water-making system in Madagascar which is able to produce drinking water through condensation of humid air in co-operation with Eole Water. We are also looking for new initiatives to support for 2015-2016, these can be submitted via greenfund@eage.org.
