W7 BOUTIQUE: A HANWELL GEM FOR STYLISH FINDS
Opened in 2022 by Julie Middleton and Vanessa Green, W7 Boutique has swiftly become a beloved destination for fashionsavvy locals What started as a pop-up shop has evolved into a permanent fixture at 60 Boston Road, Hanwell, offering a curated selection of sample-sale clothing and unique gifts.

Second Female, a Danish brand renowned for its quality and fit, is a perennial favorite among Hanwell's fashionistas. Meanwhile, Nooki, a London-based brand, captures hearts with its trendy accessories, including chic beach bags and hats

As summer unfolds, W7 Boutique gears up for exciting events and new arrivals July and August will witness the launch of their transitional Autumn collection, promising fresh styles to usher in the new season.
For those seeking summer essentials, Middleton and Green recommend a Nooki beach bag, a pair of impeccably fitting Hod trousers, and a delicate blouse from Maison Hotel.

TOKRI, 7 PARK PARADE, GUNNERSBURY AVE, LONDON W3 9BD ELM | 7
The evening began with an inviting introduction: two fabulous cocktails The raspberry mojito, sharp and sweet, and the whiskey sour, smooth, sensuous, and warming, set a strong precedent for the rest of the meal
For starters, we opted for the mixed grill, a delectable assortment of succulent tandoori chicken, gorgeous tiger prawns, and an exceptional tandoori fish. Each component was cooked to perfection, offering a tantalising preview of what was to come However, it was the restaurant's signature Chana Chaat that truly stole the show This dish featured a medley of potatoes intricately carved into a crunchy basket, topped with proteinpacked chickpeas marinated in aromatic spices, sweet and tangy yoghurt, fresh mint, and tamarind chutney The Chana Chaat was, without a doubt, one of the best starters I have ever experienced, setting a high bar for any future culinary endeavours.
The main course continued to impress The Butter Chicken, made with chicken tikka, cashew-nut, and tomato, was a masterpiece of rich, creamy perfection It was perhaps the most exquisite Butter Chicken I have ever tasted. Accompanying this was the Malabar Chicken, featuring chicken thigh, coconut, curry leaves, and Malabar spices This dish, too, was a triumph of flavours, each element harmonising beautifully to create a delightful culinary experience.
Tokri's owner, Ram Kishore, brings a wealth of experience to the table
Having started his food career catering for a cricket team in Chandigarh, he later joined the Marriott ITC in Delhi, home to the renowned Bukhara restaurant. Kishore's journey continued in London at Mela in Shaftesbury Avenue, and in 2011, he launched Riya Foods, supplying high-end Indian restaurants across the city This rich history is evident in every dish at Tokri
The restaurant itself, located in a parade of shops, boasts bright, modern décor The bar features unique cocktails crafted from premium liquors and fresh ingredients, alongside a selection of international beers, wines, premium spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks. The marble bar offers a perfect
spot to enjoy these innovative drinks in a relaxing atmosphere. Tokri delivers an extraordinary dining experience The flavours are rich and perfectly balanced, the presentation is beautiful, and the service is exemplary Despite the bustling environment, the staff were attentive and efficient, ensuring a memorable evening Tokri is a shining example of contemporary Indian cuisine, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a taste of India's culinary excellence in Gunnersbury.

TOP TABLE
On a beautiful Thursday lunchtime, I had the pleasure of dining outdoors at Rayuela in Dickens Yard, Ealing Broadway, savouring a chilled glass of white wine. The meal started in true Spanish fashion with a plate of Jamón Ibérico, expertly cut from the leg by the restaurant owner, Miguel Morales, on the main promenade
The culinary journey continued with Ham Croquettes, smooth and delicate, showcasing the rich flavour of the Jamón Ibérico Next came the Salmon Avocado Tartare, featuring fresh salmon and creamy avocado, elevated with a zesty passion fruit twist and citrus foam, a refreshing combination
"The restaurant's name, derived from the Spanish word for hopscotch, reflects its playful approach to combining flavours, offering diners a chance to 'hop' through a menu of fresh, seasonal dishes."
The Mackerel dish was another highlight, served with a smoky fish stock gel, croutons in anchovy oil, and grilled vegetables The mackerel was meaty and robust, perfectly complemented by the accompanying flavours. The Trout in a light soup of asparagus and spinach was delicate with a mild flavour and tender, flaky texture, harmonising beautifully with the fresh asparagus and spinach
Rayuela's menu is a dynamic celebration of seasonal produce, with weekly variations crafted by the chefs Each element, from vegetables to meats and fish, is treated with the utmost respect to preserve its natural flavours, enhanced by the use of a charcoal grill
The atmosphere at Rayuela is warm, welcoming, and buzzy, enhancing the exceptional dining experience. The restaurant's name, derived from the Spanish word for hopscotch, reflects its playful approach to combining flavours, offering diners a chance to "hop" through a menu of fresh, seasonal dishes

UNLOCKING THE PERFECT FIRST HAIRCUT EXPERIENCE FOR YOUR CHILD
Getting a haircut can be an intimidating experience for children, filled with unfamiliar sensations and fears However, with the right approach, parents and stylists can ensure a positive and stress-free haircutting experience for young ones Dora Kras, the expert hairdresser at Capelli Belli on Pitshanger Lane, shares her insights on how to create the perfect first haircut experience for your child
“Children often fear the experience of getting their hair cut, associating it with sharp tools, loud noises, and unfamiliar sensations," says Dora "As a parent, there are proactive steps you can take to ease your child's anxiety." Discussing the process, watching educational videos, and roleplaying can help familiarise children with what to expect Additionally, taking your child to witness your own haircut can demonstrate that the experience is safe and routine
"For stylists, there are strategies to make the haircutting process more comfortable for children," Dora explains "Using distractions
like DVDs, spraying water into hands instead of directly on the hair, and offering alternatives to traditional capes can create a more relaxed atmosphere " By understanding and addressing children's fears, both parents and stylists can ensure a positive experience
At Capelli Belli, hairdressers employ techniques to ensure a successful haircut for children "Establishing a friendly rapport and explaining the haircut process are key steps to ease children's nerves, " says Dora. "We also offer distractions like videos, with parental approval, to keep children engaged and cooperative during the appointment." With gorgeous car-shaped seats and incentives, Capelli Belli aims to make the haircutting process enjoyable for young clients
"When it comes to keeping your child calm during a haircut, encourage them to bring a beloved toy or book for a comforting distraction," advises Dora. "Communicate any nervousness your child may be feeling to the barber or hairdresser, allowing them to
approach the situation with sensitivity " By implementing these strategies, you can ensure a positive and stress-free haircut experience for your child, making it a memorable milestone for the whole family
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable haircut session, consider these expert tips from Dora:
Timing is Key: Ensure your child is wellrested and fed before the appointment to minimise fussiness.
Bring Support: Having older siblings or both parents present can provide a comforting presence and distraction for your child
Create a Positive Atmosphere: Arrive early to capture photos and videos, turning the haircut into a fun and exciting event
Maintain a Calm Demeanour: Allow the stylist space to work and remain composed, as children can sense parental anxiety
Embrace the Process: Celebrate the experience and any progress made, fostering a positive outlook on future haircuts

BRENTHAM GARDEN SUBURB
ELM | 19
WHERE HISTORY, COMMUNITY, AND ARCHITECTURE FLOURISH IN HARMONY
Nestled within the picturesque landscape between Hanger and Pitshanger Lanes lies Brentham Garden Suburb, a quintessential piece of Ealing's history. The story of Brentham is one of transformation, community spirit, and architectural innovation
In the late 19th century, Ealing experienced a surge in development with the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1838. By 1901, Ealing had obtained borough status, yet amidst this urban expansion, one area remained untouched: the farmland stretching from Castlebar Hill to Hanger Hill, soon to be the site of Brentham Garden Suburb
Rooted in the ideals of the Arts and Crafts and Garden City movements, Brentham embodied a vision of social reform and beauty in everyday life Influenced by luminaries such as
“We love living around here as we have access to the wide range of shops on Pitshanger Lane, from a local Deli to the friendly team in Oscars. You quickly have a genuine sense of belonging. Brentham epitomises modern living intertwined with a rich community spirit.”
William Morris and Ebenezer Howard, Brentham was to be more than just a housing development; it was to be a community-driven haven In 1891, Ebenezer Howard established General Builders Ltd., laying the groundwork for Brentham's creation
Led by visionary figures like Henry Vivian, builders congregated at the Haven Arms not only to construct houses but to establish a tenants' association, fostering Brentham's ethos of collaboration and co-partnership.
With the support of influential figures like Ralph Neville and J.M. Ludlow, Brentham's dream began to materialise By September 21, 1901, nearly £1,000 in share capital had been raised, marking the inception of Brentham as a pioneer in the co-partnership housing movement
The inauguration of The Brentham Club in 1911 further cemented Brentham's sense of community Founded by the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, the club provided a hub for sports and leisure activities, attracting local legends like Fred Perry, whose legacy is commemorated by a green plaque installed by The Ealing Civic Society in 2011
Brentham's significance transcends its physical boundaries Designated a conservation area in 1969, the suburb continues to be cherished for its architectural heritage and community appeal The Brentham Society, formed in the same year, stands as a guardian of Brentham's character, providing support and fostering a sense of belonging among residents Today, Brentham Garden Suburb remains a testament to the enduring legacy of collaboration and community Its characterful homes, steeped in Arts and Crafts tradition, stand as a living testament to the visionaries who dared to dream of a better way of living over a century ago. As you stroll through its leafy streets, you can't help but feel the echoes of history and the vibrant spirit of community that defines Brentham to this day

TANYA TAYLOR, YOUNG EALING FOUNDATION
My name ’ s Tanya Taylor, and I’m Head of Communications and Business Development at the Young Ealing Foundation. I’ve been at the charity for five years now, and it’s my job to ensure that everyone knows about us and the important work we do in the borough Both my parents and grandparents are from Ealing, and I grew up just down the road in Isleworth, so Ealing is very close to my heart, and I love working here
The Young Ealing Foundation is a charity that exists to ensure that every young person in Ealing thrives We were set up six years ago in response to the ongoing cuts to the children and young people’s sector We connect and equip grassroots youth charities, supporters, and decision-makers to open up a brighter future for Ealing’s children and young people Ealing is a young borough with 112,000 under 25s living here. Despite often being referred to as the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’, more than a third of our young people are living in poverty, and opportunity is not spread evenly across the borough Thankfully, we ’ re home to some brilliant organisations that exist to work with our young people, but due to ongoing cuts, many of them are at risk of disappearing It’s our job to ensure these vital organisations not only survive but thrive.
“We’re a small organisation making a big impact and we work to ensure young people are on the agenda when it comes to local decisionmaking.”
Since our inception in 2017, we ’ ve brought more than £3m of funding into the borough and run 57 free training sessions to support organisations to become more sustainable Through our
Young Champions programme, we ’ ve supported young people to save a local youth club from closure, cocreate the UK’s first-ever youth mental health crisis café, and set up an annual awards ceremony to celebrate the fantastic achievements of Ealing’s children and young people and the organisations that support them.
We’re a small organisation making a big impact, and we work to ensure young people are on the agenda when it comes to local decision-making. We advocate for the smaller organisations doing vital frontline work in our communities and provide local young people with a platform to influence their futures We’ve recently trained 20 local young people as ‘Youth Voice Facilitators’ to ensure youth voice is at the heart of decision-making locally We’re a young charity, but we ’ re here for the long run
We won’t stop until Ealing is a borough where every young person realises their potential
We have a membership of 72 fantastic grassroots organisations that work across the borough, from Northolt to Northfields, Southall to South Acton, and everywhere in between Our members support more than 55,000 local children and young people every year - that’s half the local youth population! Ealing is the third most diverse borough in London, and that is reflected in our membership, with 95% of our members identifying as equity-led More than 200 people attended our most recent Young Ealing Foundation Awards ceremony, and this year we ’ re going to make it even bigger and better
We’re always looking for fantastic local individuals and businesses to help champion and support our work and the work of our members You can do this in a number of ways: For those interested, we ’ re currently putting a team together to run the Ealing Half Marathon for Young Ealing Foundation this year. "Storage is key when transitioning from a nursery to a toddler bedroom," she says "Creating ample space for your toddler to be creative, play, and read is essential " She suggests utilising hidden storage solutions like underbed drawers and wall shelves to optimise floor space while keeping safety in mind Additionally, she advises investing in staple furniture pieces in neutral colours to accommodate evolving tastes over time "Try adding colour in the soft furnishings and wall decor," she adds. "Colours can have a significant impact on child development, so choose wisely depending on the size of the room and its usage "
Practical Tips for Selecting Furniture and Décor:
Rodrigues recommends choosing furniture that is hard-wearing and easy to clean "I usually opt for wooden veneer or solid furniture for kids' rooms, " she notes "Solid wood can easily be upcycled as your child's taste changes " She suggests styling furniture with different handles to keep the classic look fresh over time.
Incorporating the child's personality
into the room ' s design is essential for fostering a sense of self-esteem Rodrigues suggests personalising light shades with the child's artwork or adding embellishments like tassels or pom-poms in their favourite colours "Framed artwork, photos, and prints of their favourite places also contribute to their sense of self," she adds Creative use of shapes, patterns, and colours, such as fun wallpapers or bed curtains, allows for personalisation while maintaining cohesion in the room ' s design
“Understanding emotional triggers is essential in various contexts, according to how and when they use their bedroom.”

Timeless Colour Schemes and Themes: When it comes to colour schemes, Rodrigues advises that there are no hard and fast rules "Emotional responses to colours are personal," she explains "However, earthy colours like blue and green are generally associated with calmness and serenity." She suggests softer colours for babies, such as delicate pinks, pale blues, and calming greens, which can evolve as the child grows "Observing their responses to different colours can help in selecting hues that create the right mood," she adds
Transitioning a baby's room into a big boy or girl's room is a journey of creating a space that not only meets the child's current needs but also evolves with them as they grow By incorporating thoughtful design elements, durable furniture, and personalised touches, parents can create a room that is both functional and reflective of their child's unique personality and interests https://www.tararodriguesinteriors.com

FIRST DAY NERVES
"Remember that the Reception team at the school are experts in helping children to settle and thrive. You will be amazed at the rapid progress your child makes in the exciting first year of school!" - Ms. Bevan
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR THEIR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
If your little one is due to start school in September, you might be wondering what they need to know and worrying about whether they’re ready or not
School readiness is certainly a hot topic. A recent national survey by Kindred Squared found that 37% of children starting Reception in 2023 were unable to listen and respond to basic instructions, 37% were not able to dress independently, and 90% of teachers reported that at least one child in their class was not toilet trained.
The good news is that there is plenty you can do to help your child get school-ready and make the transition into full-time education as smooth as possible
There may be a ‘Stay and Play’ session or another meet-up during the summer term before your child starts school Do try to attend as it’s a chance for your child to meet their teacher and see their classroom in a relaxed atmosphere with the safety of you being with them
It will also help to walk past their new school a few times over the summer so they can recognise it, see the doors where they’ll go in each morning, and talk to them about how much fun it’s going to be I spoke to a number of staff members at Notting Hill and Ealing school to get their perspective on how best to prepare children for their first day
“At NHEHS, children due to start will have
some time in the classroom with their teacher before the summer holiday,” says EYFS Lead Ms Robyn Doyle “We also organise a New Parents’ Evening, which is a great opportunity to meet other parents and exchange contact details to arrange playdates prior to starting school This helps the girls so much when they start in September to have a few familiar faces to play with ”
Knowing the school in advance will certainly help ease any apprehension or worries your child may be feeling You can also help prepare your child by always speaking about school in a positive way and explaining some of the things they’ll be doing Listen to their fears without dismissing them and validate their feelings without passing on your own worries
“It’s best to talk about starting school little and often, rather than overwhelming them with a lot of information all in one go, ” advises Ms. Doyle.
Schools encourage independence and

routines from the start In the morning, children will hang up their coat on their own named peg and put their water bottle in the right place There will be set times for learning, break, and lunch
At the end of the day, children will learn to pack up their bags and put on their coats
You can help your child work on the following independence skills at home, so they have the confidence to cope when they are asked to do these things for themselves at school:
Choose healthy food such as fruit for snacks
Eat at the table
Use cutlery
Get their own water bottle when thirsty
Open and close their lunchbox if they will have a packed lunch
Go to the toilet independently
Wash and dry their hands
Get dressed in the morning (with a little help with buttons)
Put on and take off their own shoes
Get undressed at bedtime
Put on a coat and zip it up
Recognise their name on a label
Working on these key areas over the summer will boost your child’s confidence and independence so they can concentrate on structured learning and social skills at school
Children are learning every day and have a natural curiosity about the world Modelling an interest in the world around them and asking questions about what they are doing, so they can share their thoughts and express themselves, is great preparation for starting school
“Share high-quality picture books together ask them to spot things on the page and talk about what they think will happen next,” suggests Reception teacher Mrs Louise McKenna
“Spend time in nature talking about all that they observe Use everyday activities to count, such as buttons, stairs, or blueberries Do lots of drawing, painting, and mark-making, and practice fine motor skills with activities such as cooking, rolling out dough, molding playdough or clay, and cutting with scissors, which all help to build up the strength and dexterity in their hands so they are ready for writing,” she recommends.
Doing puzzles and playing board games are also great ways to practice turn-taking and problem-solving skills that they will use in a classroom environment.
Settling children into school slowly allows them the space and time to feel safe and secure as they make friends, learn new routines, and build important relationships with staff, paving the way for a happy, settled, and confident learner
With the introduction of a more structured approach to learning and more directed activities, even children who may be used to attending full-time nursery may well feel tired in the early days of their new Reception setting This is to be expected but will be supported by a gentle setting-in process
“At NHEHS, we offer an optional shorter day on Wednesdays for the first term children can be collected at 12:45 pm after lunch,” says Ms Bevan “This gives pupils the opportunity to have playdates with peers and build up friendships and confidence, as well as to rest and recuperate ready for the busy days ahead ”
Parents should also be wary about signing their children up for too many after-school clubs whilst in Reception as they need time for unstructured play and to unwind after school
“We find that happy, rested, and independent children learn better and make such wonderful progress with us, ” adds Mrs McKenna
Most schools offer meetings for parents at the beginning of the year to explain how the timetable works and the curriculum that will be covered
“We
find that happy, rested, and independent children learn better and make such wonderful progress with us. ” - Mrs. McKenna
“At NHEHS, we offer three short Parent Workshops after the morning drop-off, which cover settling in and early reading skills, supporting reading and phonics, and developing maths mastery skills,” explains Ms Doyle “These meetings are so beneficial as you will find out how o hel o t o hild’ le i in the most appro chool uses, so you confusing fo
Each school will use a systematic synthetic phonics teaching programme (SSP), such as Jolly Phonics, Read Write Inc , or Little Wandle, which offer a structured route to support children to become fluent readers While Ofsted does not have a preferred programme it’s helpful to know which system your school is using
ELM | 26
Early mathematics skills will be developed through counting everyday objects, solving large floor puzzles, and encouraging mathematical language around measures, capacity, and 2D shapes Again, there are a number of teaching programmes available, so check which one your school uses. At home, games that involve rolling dice and counting moves help children understand early number in a fun and interactive way
What You DON’T Need to Do
You don’t need to teach your child to read the Harry Potter series, count to 100, or write an essay before they start school! Fun, interactive, and open-ended activities at home will spark their curiosity and encourage their love of learning
Starting school can feel a little daunting for parents and children alike “Remember that the Reception team at the school are experts in helping children to settle and thrive,” reassures Ms Bevan “You will be amazed at the rapid progress your child makes in the exciting first year of school!”
