FOR ART’S SAKE: A TIMELESS TREASURE OF ART AND DESIGN ON EALING GREEN
or Art’s Sake, located on picturesque Ealing Green, is a cherished familyowned gallery with a rich history and a modern approach to art Founded by Brian and Melanie Davis in 1978, and now codirected by their daughter Erica, the gallery was inspired by the Davises’ travels in the 1970s to Chicago and New York, where they discovered a contemporary art movement not yet seen in Britain This led them to import graphic and poster art from U S artists like Reinhard, Patrick Nagel, and Stewart Moskowitz, and to open their first gallery in Hendon, North West London
In 1984, the gallery expanded to Ealing, combining reproduction art and bespoke framing services By 2005, they shifted focus to original limited edition prints, solidifying their reputation among collectors Today, For Art’s Sake also offers a curated selection of homeware and gifts from small, independent makers, emphasising craftsmanship and sustainability Popular items include handglazed ceramics by SGW, which are especially loved by Ealing’s tea and coffee enthusiasts
Under Erica Davis’s leadership, the gallery has undergone a makeover and now includes a browsable online collection accessible via an in-store touchscreen As the festive season approaches, For Art’s Sake is preparing to introduce new ceramicists and jewelry brands, making it an ideal destination for unique gifts This gallery is a true gem on Ealing Green, blending art, craftsmanship, and community
FROM HOMELESSNESS TO LEGAL HERO
THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF TINESSA KAUR
Tinessa Kaur’s journey is one of remarkable resilience, faith, and determination From experiencing homelessness as a teenager to becoming the first Sikh woman to win the prestigious Young Pro-Bono Barrister of the Year award, Tinessa’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that one ’ s circumstances do not define one ’ s future Now a leading figure in the legal community, Tinessa is not only breaking barriers but also paving the way for others to follow in her footsteps Through her work with the Sikh Lawyers Association and initiatives like the "Cut It Out" project, she is making a significant impact on both the legal profession and her local community
JEWEL
IN THE CROWN
sponsored by Trisha Stewart, Director of Ealing Business Club
“My life took a sharp turn when my father was imprisoned while I was still preparing for my GCSEs This was a time when most teenagers were worrying about exams and their future careers, but for me, the future suddenly became uncertain By the age of 17, I found myself homeless, with nowhere to go. It was a harsh reality, but I knew I had to survive and pursue my dreams, no matter how impossible they seemed at the time
Determined to go to university and study law, I faced a series of challenges that many would find insurmountable I spent nights sleeping on park benches and days attending college, holding onto the small yet crucial support of a £30-per-week
"The gurdwara, my Sikh temple, became my sanctuary during those dark times, providing a semblance of stability when everything else felt like it was crumbling."
Educational Maintenance Allowance. Despite the lack of a home, I relied on my faith, believing that everything I was going through was leading me towards something greater.
The gurdwara, my Sikh temple, became my sanctuary during those dark times It kept me fed and clothed, providing a semblance of stability when everything else felt like it was crumbling There were moments when I could have easily gone down the wrong path, especially when I was surrounded by the dangers of gang culture But I was resolute in my goal to
earn the qualifications that would change my life The guidance and encouragement from a dedicated teacher also made a tremendous difference, helping me stay focused on my studies despite the overwhelming obstacles
The memory of those difficult nights, alone on the streets, fuelled my determination I knew that even though I had nothing at that moment, I also had nothing to lose I was brought up in Leicester, but moved to London 14 years ago to pursue my degree None of it was easy, but each step brought me closer to the life I envisioned for myself.
After graduating, I immersed myself in voluntary legal work, spending 2 5 years with a firm in Kilburn. This experience was invaluable, allowing me to gain the knowledge and skills that I now pass on to the next generation of aspiring lawyers One of my proudest achievements is cofounding the Sikh Lawyers Association, a platform that supports not only Sikhs within the legal profession but also welcomes individuals from all backgrounds Through this association,
we ’ ve helped many people access affordable legal advice and secure crucial opportunities such as pupillages and training contracts. Last year alone, we assisted 10-15 candidates in securing these much-sought-after positions, including several from ethnic minorities Our services, like drop-in clinics and mock interviews, are designed to level the playing field and give everyone a fair chance
"If I were to offer words of wisdom to anyone facing difficult times, it would be this: Never Give Up. Keep the Faith. And remember, it’s all about Timing."
Another initiative close to my heart is the “Just Cut It Out” project, which addresses gang culture and youth violence I conduct workshops in schools, sharing my own experiences of homelessness and the gang threats I faced These sessions resonate deeply with students, many of whom are targeted by gangs just as I was. The students open up to me in ways they
might not with their teachers, seeing a reflection of their own struggles in my story We even conduct mock trials to improve their advocacy skills, empowering them to use their voices in positive ways For the past 6-7 years, I’ve lived in Greenford and regularly attend the gurdwara in Southall. The Sikh practice of Amrit Vela, or early morning prayers, has been a source of strength for me during my toughest times Even now, I participate in Simran (meditation) at least once a month, between 3:30 and 5:30 in the morning It’s a way to still my mind and reconnect with the faith that carried me through those years of uncertainty and hardship
If I were to offer words of wisdom to anyone facing difficult times, it would be this: Never Give Up Keep the Faith And remember, it’s all about Timing These principles have guided me, and they’re encapsulated in the two words tattooed on my body in Punjabi Sabr & Shukr, meaning Patience & Gratitude These words remind me every day of where I’ve come from and how much I have to be thankful for ”
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
ELISE BROWN, FOUNDER OF M
Inever imagined that redundancy during maternity leave would be the catalyst for something much bigger than my own career. In 2017, when I found myself out of a job and at a crossroads, I decided to use that time to explore my options I attended workshops, engaged in talks, and dove into research on returner programmes those designed to help women like me re-enter the workforce after a career break But there was a catch: the costs of these retraining programmes were often prohibitively high, and while I was fortunate to access some free workshops and networks due to my previous mid-to-high income role, I couldn’t help but think about the many women who didn’t have the same opportunities
That’s when the seed for Mama Haven was planted
I envisioned a space where low-income mums could find the support and resources they needed to not just return to work, but to truly thrive Mama Haven is not just about getting back into the workforce it’s about breaking the cycle of in-work poverty, building confidence, and reimagining what’s possible for these women and their families.
"At Mama Haven, we ’ re dedicated to providing a pathway out of poverty by advancing education and promoting social inclusion."
At Mama Haven, we ’ re dedicated to providing a pathway out of poverty by advancing education and promoting social inclusion We’ve made it our mission to connect our users with higher-income employment opportunities by partnering with training providers and offering childcare support But beyond that, we
each connection made has reinforced the importance of the work we ’ re doing
also listen to the needs of our community, because we know that everyone ’ s journey is different To foster this community connection, we created coffee mornings that allow local mums to come together, share experiences, and support one another. Our Women in Business Breakfasts are another initiative aimed at building networks and
empowering businesswomen to connect and collaborate And we ’ re incredibly excited to be in the process of launching our community coworking space in East Acton, where mums can work, learn, and grow together in a supportive environment
Recently, we celebrated Mama Haven’s third anniversary, a milestone that filled me with pride and gratitude In these three years, we ’ ve hosted 13 special events, 10 coffee mornings, 5 Women in Business Breakfasts, and 3 training sessions all attended by over 300 incredible women Each event, each conversation, and
But this is just the beginning Mama Haven is run by a team of dedicated volunteer trustees, and while we ’ ve achieved so much, we know there’s more to be done Our goal is to raise enough funds to build a full-time staff team, ensuring that we can expand our impact even further We’re always on the lookout for training providers, businesses, and community members who share our vision and want to partner with us As we look ahead, I’m filled with hope and determination We’re here to listen, support, and uplift each and every mum who walks through our doors Whether you ’ re searching for work, seeking a better role, or looking to make business connections, Mama Haven is here for you
We’re not just a charity run by mums we ’ re a community, a support system, and a haven for all women in Ealing I hope that as Mama Haven continues to grow, more women will see us as an invaluable asset to the community. So, if you ’ re a woman in business, please keep September 18th in your diary and follow us on Instagram @mamahavenuk. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of so many
WHY WE LOVE... NORTHFIELDS
A HISTORIC GEM BLENDING CHARM, GREEN SPACES, AND MODERN VIBRANCY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE VALLUY
Northfields, a largely residential area nestled between Ealing and Hanwell, south of the Uxbridge Road, is a neighbourhood that boasts a unique blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy Centred on Northfield Avenue, a well-established parade of mostly independent shops, Northfields serves the everyday needs of local residents and offers a glimpse into its rich past and thriving present.
From the 14th century, this area was part of the manor of Coldhall, or West Ealing Great and Little Northfields were two large fields in the late Middle Ages, lying in the extreme west of Ealing parish By the mid-17th century, Northfield Lane (later Avenue) linked Little Ealing with the road to Uxbridge The manor house of Coldhall probably stood near the southern end of the lane at that time The Plough Inn, a historic pub, has been in existence since 1722, although it has been rebuilt several times over the centuries
An orchard was planted in Little Northfield by 1738, and in the 19th century, the Steel family of market gardeners grew apples across the entire area on an almost industrial scale In the 1870s, the family built a fruit-packing warehouse, which survived until recently at the corner of Northcroft Road and Northfield Road Up until the 20th century, the district we now know as Northfields was largely fields with a muddy track called Northfield Lane joining the hamlets of Little Ealing and Ealing Dean (or West Ealing) It was part of the ancient Manor of Coldhall and devoted to arable farming and market gardens
The turn of the 20th century brought significant changes to Northfields The introduction of electric trams to
Uxbridge Road in 1901 prompted the Steel family to turn property developers, leading to the transformation of the area They began to develop streets initially between Uxbridge Road and Leighton Road, and later areas south of Northfields station, such as Julien Road, Wellington Road, and Bramley Road, named after the cooking apples they cultivated
Northfield Halt opened after the District Railway was electrified in 1908, and was rebuilt as Northfields and Little Ealing station in 1911 When Piccadilly line services began, the station was rebuilt again and given its present name, while a maintenance depot opened to the west
The end of the 19th century saw a dramatic increase in Ealing's population, largely due to improved public transport to London This growth led to a mix of upper-class Victorian housing and working-class homes, reflecting the diverse needs of the area ' s new residents
Northfields has been home to some notable figures. The great French acrobat and tightrope walker Charles Blondin lived in Northfields from 1886 until his death in 1897 in a villa he called Niagara House. This house stood opposite The Plough and commemorated his numerous crossings of Niagara Falls on a tightrope Northfields’ other claim to fame is Sixties pop star Dusty Springfield, who in the Fifties was a pupil at St Ann’s Convent in Place House on Little Ealing Lane.
The Odeon, Northfields, now the Ealing Christian Centre, has one of the finest cinema interiors of the 1930s Designed by Cecil Massey in 1932, it was originally known as the Avenue but was popularly called ‘Spanish City’ due to its Moorish external details and elaborate interior Green Spaces and Community Life Northfields is renowned for its green spaces Besides Blondin Park and Nature Area, there is also Lammas Park, which gets its name from “Lammas Lands ” Originally used for grazing cattle in medieval times, the park was bought by the Borough of Ealing for £220 per acre on 11 October 1881 Today, it is a lovely park full of playgrounds and memorial trees with plaques commemorating various individuals.
Lammas Park offers tennis courts, a croquet court, bowling greens, children’s

playgrounds, and a nature area Blondin Park, a local nature reserve, features a community orchard, a wildflower meadow, a pond, and an active friends' group dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the park Northfields also lays claim to having London’s oldest allotments, established in 1832. The Northfields Allotments have more than 140 plot holders and a long waiting list They host events such as the Hallowe’en Trail, fostering a strong sense of community.
Northfields' high street, along Northfield Avenue, is a bustling area with mainly independent shops and cafés. These businesses are particularly popular with young mums during the week and families at the weekend The high street's unique blend of shops and eateries creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, encouraging residents to shop locally and support small businesses As Paul Leslie of Leslie & Co. notes, "Northfields is a fantastic area for families, offering a strong sense of community, excellent schools, and beautiful green spaces With its charming streets and convenient transport links, it's the perfect place to settle down and enjoy a balanced lifestyle "
The Northfield ward is one of the most
prosperous in the borough, with high levels of employment, educational attainment, and home ownership. At the 2011 census, just over half the ward’s residents were of white British heritage, a proportion closely reflected at Fielding Primary School on Wyndham Road This diversity adds to the rich cultural tapestry of the area, fostering a welcoming and inclusive community
Sandra and Evelyn, co-owners of Mooch and local residents, sum it up perfectly: "As Northfields residents ourselves, we ’ ve always loved the close-knit community and the friendly vibe that defines this area. That’s why I chose to set up Mooch here it's a place where people know each other, support local businesses, and really take pride in their neighbourhood. Living and working in Northfields is a dream come true for me "
The culinary scene in Northfields is also a point of pride Puneet from Patri explains, "I love Northfields because of the community feel and I believe it's West London's bestkept secret. For Patri, it was a perfect showcase for our work where our passion met appreciation and we found loyalty which in turn continues to drive innovation and development. Northfields taught us to keep it
local and we source locally, develop locally, hire locally and sell locally Residents are really passionate, experimental and have a discerning palate in terms of cuisine and it offers culinary experiences from all around the world "
This strong sense of community is echoed by Farrah Seda of Kuko London, who shares, "Northfields is a gem, full of independent businesses, family orientated, wonderful restaurants and bakeries, but what makes it extra special are the lovely people that work in these places and live in the area My husband and I recently opened Kuko London with this in mind Our main intentions were to create a very special place, something different and fresh in Northfields, as well as to elevate the service for customers, both men and women, and ensure that they had a good experience with us "
With its historical landmarks, beautiful parks, vibrant high street, and thriving community, Northfields is a neighbourhood that truly has it all Whether you ' re exploring its rich past, enjoying its green spaces, or shopping along Northfield Avenue, there's always something to love about Northfields It’s no wonder that residents are proud to call this charming part of Ealing their home.
MAXIMILISM
A RICH TAPESTRY OF PERSONAL EXPRESSION
Maximalism has surged in popularity, offering a vibrant and eclectic alternative to minimalism This design style blends diverse patterns, colours, textures, and objects, embracing a more-is-more philosophy. It allows individuals to showcase their favourite items in a striking and playful manner
Amy Tsao and Manisha Agarwal from Studio AM, an Ealing-based interior design company, define maximalism as an approach that harmoniously coexists diverse elements "Maximalism is about creating spaces that reflect personal identity and emotional wellbeing," they explain "It's about surrounding yourself with meaningful objects that enhance your daily life."
Despite its emphasis on abundance, maximalism should not be confused with clutter A common misconception is that maximalist interiors are overwhelmingly busy or chaotic Tsao clarifies, "The aim is to create visually stimulating environments without crossing into chaos Clever storage solutions are essential to make the maximalist look work "
Maximalism leans into big and bold choices regarding colour, pattern, texture, shape, and form, creating spaces that evolve with time This dynamic nature distinguishes it from minimalism, which often prioritises simplicity and restraint
Key to maximalism is its focus on emotional and personal significance over conforming to a particular aesthetic Tsao emphasises, "Maximalist interiors are unique because they
are deeply personal. Each piece in the room tells a story or holds sentimental value, making the space truly oneof-a-kind "
Addressing misconceptions is crucial. Many people mistakenly view maximalism as requiring a large budget In reality, it's about balance "You don't need to spend a fortune to achieve a maximalist look It's about mixing high-end items with flea market finds and sentimental pieces," Agarwal advises "This balance allows for creativity and self-expression without breaking the bank "
Maximalism is not a passing fad but a timeless approach focusing on self-expression and personal storytelling "Maximalism is here to stay because it's fundamentally about people and their stories," says Tsao "As long as people have unique tastes and experiences, maximalism will have a place in interior design "
In conclusion, Maximalism celebrates individuality and the richness of life By embracing bold choices and meaningful objects, maximalism creates spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply personal As Agarwal puts it, "Maximalism is about living in a space that tells your story, in all its vibrant and eclectic glory "

ON THE
AN INTERVIEW WITH B.E.A.T CHAIR, ALEX EBDON
Since its inception in 2015, BEAT has grown into a cornerstone of Ealing's cultural calendar. We caught up with Alex Ebdon, a professional artist based in South Ealing and Chair of the BEAT organising committee, to discuss how the festival has evolved, the connections it fosters within the community, and what to expect from this year ' s event.
How has BEAT evolved since its inception in 2015, and what have been some of the most significant milestones or changes you ' ve observed over the years?
BEAT has certainly transformed into a major cultural event for Ealing, yet its core purpose has remained steadfast The festival was originally designed to offer all creative individuals in the borough a platform to showcase their work, addressing the challenge many faced in finding outlets for their creativity. This simple yet powerful ethos continues to guide BEAT today
Over the years, we ' ve seen a significant increase in both the number and diversity of artists participating in the event Each year, we are thrilled to see new artists join the trail, expanding the range of creativity on display Ealing has always been a borough rich in artistic talent, and the depth of creativity we ' ve uncovered has been astonishing. This year, we ’ re celebrating a record-breaking participation with over 230 artists spread across 69 venues, reflecting the festival’s ongoing success and growing impact.
In what ways does BEAT foster connections between local artists and the broader Ealing community, and how do these relationships benefit both artists and residents?
The essence of BEAT lies in its ability to bridge the gap between artists and the community The festival serves as a vibrant platform where artistic talent is not only displayed but also engaged with directly by the public. Every year,
"The essence of BEAT lies in its ability to bridge the gap between artists and the community."
we hear from visitors who are amazed at the number of artists in their local area, sometimes even on their own street BEAT brings this hidden creativity into the open, allowing residents to connect with artists and their work in a meaningful way
This connection benefits residents by providing them with a comprehensive 'brochure' of local art and artists, which they can turn to whenever they seek out creative work For the artists, BEAT offers not just an exhibition space but also a

market for their creations. The festival creates an interactive experience that goes beyond what one might find on a website or in a gallery By meeting visitors face-to-face, artists can share the stories behind their work, discuss their techniques, and explore the personal and broader significance of their art This level of engagement enriches the experience for both the artists and the community, making it a truly valuable and impactful event
What are your personal highlights of the upcoming BEAT? I am genuinely excited about all the artists participating this year BEAT is always an exhilarating whirlwind of activity, and the energy from every person who walks through the doors is palpable Having been involved in every edition of BEAT since its start, I am just as enthusiastic this year to open my studio and present my new collection of work I know many artists share this sentiment. As we approach September, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement With such a wide array of art and artists on display, it’s difficult to pick just a few highlights My advice is to fully explore what the trail offers. Each venue will provide a unique experience, so I encourage everyone to review the BEAT brochure, visit various locations, and immerse themselves in the artistic diversity that makes Ealing one of London’s most creative boroughs

EALING’S ARTSCAPE
A CANVAS OF LOCAL EXHIBITIONS
JG CONTEMPORARY X THE VERDEAN
JG Contemporary is hosting a residency at The Verdean in Friary Park, sponsored by Creative Land Trust and Mount Anvil, from 19th August to 31st October The residency will feature artists Matt Small, Derrick Santini, and Symone Williams of Genesis Carnival Enterprises, offering the public and local community open studios, workshops, and exhibitions that highlight their unique creative processes
GRAYSON PERRY, PITZHANGER MANOR
In July, ELM attended the opening of Grayson Perry's exhibition, "The Vanity of Small Differences," at Pitzhanger Manor. This event showcases Perry’s six large-scale tapestries in the home where William Hogarth’s "A Rake’s Progress," which inspired Perry’s work, was originally displayed The exhibition unites two of Britain’s sharpest social commentators in one historic location in Ealing.
Perry’s tapestries offer a modern take on Hogarth’s 18th-century series that chronicles Tom Rakewell’s journey from wealth to destitution Originally displayed at Pitzhanger, Hogarth's works continue to feature in the Soane’s drawing room, now vibrant with red walls This setting allows for a unique comparison of both artists' explorations of societal themes
Grayson Perry’s tapestries explore themes of class mobility and consumer culture Perry states, “The tapestries tell the story of class mobility I focus on the emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with, wear, eat, read, or drive Class and taste run deep in our character we care ”
This exhibition is significant for Ealing, featuring exceptional art with a whole host of West London connections, such as William Morris wallpaper and Cath Kidston's bag "The Vanity of Small Differences" is a thought-provoking exhibition that offers a profound reflection on contemporary society. I highly recommend visiting Pitzhanger Manor to experience these striking tapestries The exhibition runs until December 2024
Key events include ‘Last Thursday with JGC’ on 26th September, the ‘Nostalgia’ photography show from 1st-13th October to raise funds for the FELIX PROJECT, and a special Halloween event on 31st October Visitors can also view Matt Small’s ‘The Pride of England’ pieces, created for the Men’s England football team, which will be displayed in the residency space JG Contemporary’s permanent location in Poet’s Corner will continue to host pop-ups and events during this period.

HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO WAKE UP REFRESHED AND ENERGISED
Waking up in the morning feeling so groggy you wonder whether you slept at all is not a fun way to start the day but not unusual for many of us. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to impaired memory, low mood, illnesses, weight gain, and impact jobs and relationships
So what prevents us from getting a good night’s sleep?
"I see many clients in my therapy practice who struggle with sleep. This can impact mental health and make worries worse, something I appreciate from my own sleep struggles," says Ginny Hulin, local Wellbeing Training Consultant and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor "A recurring thought that only seems to strike you late at night, an overdue task, a nagging guilt, a looming week Thoughts can land on your shoulders, quietly building a nest, making it even more difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep."
The good news is that small changes could lead to improved sleep quality, and most of these involve creating effective routines and patterns before going to bed:
1. Establish a Sleep Routine
Our circadian rhythm regulates sleep-wake cycles Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends This regularity helps your body recognise when it's time to sleep and wake up, leading to better sleep quality over time
2. Optimise Your Sleep Environment
Factors such as temperature, noise, and light levels influence the ability to fall and stay asleep If you sleep with your partner, consider separate mattresses; this can maintain closeness but also limit disturbing movements Try a few drops of lavender on your pillow, as this relaxes the brain and body and has a calming effect
3. Limit Exposure to Blue Light
Exposure to blue light from devices inhibits the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, making it harder to fall asleep. Limit screen time in the hour before bed Use blue light filters on devices if you must use them Reading a book or engaging in another
relaxing activity is a good alternative (this takes some discipline)
4. Exercise Regularly
Regular physical activity promotes longer periods of deep sleep, the most restorative sleep phase Exercise also helps regulate the circadian rhythm
5. Watch What You Eat and Drink
Limit caffeine and nicotine, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime It is advisable to avoid coffee after 2 pm if you can. Incorporate foods rich in magnesium and tryptophan, such as nuts, seeds, and turkey, which can promote sleep Avoid heavy meals before bed, which can cause discomfort and disrupt sleep
6. Natural Sleep Aids
Herbal teas such as chamomile, Passiflora, valerian root, and lavender have calming effects and can promote sleepiness These can impact the body's responses in ways similar to medicated sleeping pills
7. Mindfulness
"This is, I believe, the most effective tool," says Hullin "Use the nighttime to reframe your thinking for the next day Gratitude and positive affirmations can be helpful for this Try writing down thoughts before you go to bed, freeing these from your mind may help you escape what I call the 'loop of doom,' which can often take hold in the hours of darkness Notice the things that went well in the day and call them out or write them down, setting a positive intention for the next day I have seen many clients benefit from mindful practices that slow down the mind, releasing them from the fight-or-flight response, telling our brains we are safe and that we are in control which, for the most part, we are "
Incorporating these natural methods into your daily routine can significantly improve your sleep quality By understanding and applying the science behind sleep, you can create an environment and lifestyle conducive to restful and restorative sleep Most importantly, give yourself permission to release the worries of the day All of this can lead to better overall health and wellbeing.

ALL THAT GLITTERS
WE VISITED FIVE TALENTED LOCAL JEWELLERS IN THEIR HOMES WHERE THEY TALKED US THROUGH THEIR BEAUTIFUL COLLECTIONS
ANGELA BENJAMIN
Ange B Designs is my creative outlet where I transform my passion for modern architecture, geometry, and structural garment design into bold, wearable art Though I initially trained as a sports physiotherapist, I found jewellery making to be a powerful way to express my love for threedimensional forms In my Hanwell studio, I handcraft each piece using recycled precious metals like silver and gold, ethically-sourced gemstones, and reclaimed timber, creating distinctive asymmetric geometric shapes that define my work.
My inspiration comes from many places, particularly modern architecture and exhibitions I have a special fondness for Brutalist architecture, with the Barbican being one of my favourite spots to explore Ealing itself offers a sense of peace through its wonderful parks, and I often find tranquillity walking along the canal behind Elthorne Park Alongside creating my own collections, I also enjoy crafting bespoke jewellery commissions, bringing together unique shapes and materials to create meaningful, wearable pieces
https://www.angebdesigns.com/
DENISE DE GROMOBOY
I'm Denise de Gromoboy, a silversmith and owner of Denalis Jeweller glass beads and silver findings but soon felt the urge to design and handcraft jewellery from start to finish Discovering silversmithing classes and precious metal clay was a turning point. The magical transformation of clay into fine silver captivated me, and after lots of practice, I began creating unique pieces
Silver precious metal clay is versatile, non-toxic, and zero waste Each piece goes through a process of rolling, texturing, shaping, drying, sanding, firing, and polishing, resulting in a beautiful, hallmark-quality silver piece. Sustainability is key in my work nothing is wasted, and all materials are reused My designs are inspired by my garden, the environment, and art, with ranges inspired by Van Gogh, Mary Quant, and leaf prints from pelargonium leaves
Every piece is individually handcrafted, making each item unique I also create sterling silver jewellery, incorporating semi-precious stones and Swarovski crystal beads I’m proud to be registered with the Goldsmith's Company Assay Office, holding my own Maker’s Mark, and to be a member of The National Association of Jewellers and The Guild of Jewellery Designers. Outside the studio, I find peace and inspiration in the tranquillity of South Ealing Cemetery, blending artistry and sustainability through Denalis Jewellery

GINA RIVELLINI
I’m Gina Rivellini, a jeweller based in Northfields, and my passion lies in designing and creating handcrafted sterling silver jewellery. I’m particularly drawn to shape, texture, and symmetry, finding inspiration in the architecture of interesting buildings and the intricate patterns of tiles and fabrics
When I’m not in the studio, I find peace of mind running through the beautiful parks of the Ealing Borough we ' re so lucky to have such wonderful outdoor spaces
I love experimenting with tools to create unique patterns in silver and adding striking gemstones to bring a touch of colour to my pieces Sustainability is at the heart of my work, and I often upcycle vintage glass beads and cabochons into new jewellery. I work mainly with recycled sterling silver and ensure that every scrap is used, even ng stud earrings from fragment materials
I’m Cheyenne Chew Siegel, a jeweller based in Hanwell My journey into jewellery design started with a background in textile design, where I developed a love for colour and pattern I first encountered clay during a life sculpting class and later discovered my passion for porcelain while taking courses in Hanwell and Putney
While initially creating Liberty fabric earrings, a suggestion to add necklaces sparked the idea of making porcelain jewellery I saw a gap in the market for refined, delicate ceramic jewellery Porcelain is a tactile material that allows me to experiment with shapes, colours, and decoration techniques like decals, gold lustre, and glass fusing This led to the creation of Losa Lou Jewellery, where each piece is handmade with love and care, inspired by nature, my Chinese Malaysian heritage, and female artists
My hero product, the Porcelain Earrin Lustre, embodies the elegance and c I strive for These earrings are shaped and fired three times, with hand-pain gold lustre to ensure a lasting finish, complemented by a 14k gold-filled h They're a true labour of love

One rainy Friday evening, seeking refuge from a torrential downpour, we stumbled upon Yayaka in Dickens Yard Stepping inside felt like receiving a warm hug, a comforting escape from the storm outside. Founded by Vivian, a professional chef of Greek origin, Yayaka is a tribute to her grandmother’s cherished recipes, offering an authentic Greek culinary experience to the people of Ealing Vivian, who previously ran a food delivery business with the same concept, has now brought these delightful flavours to a cosy restaurant setting.
Yayaka's kitchen is helmed by the talented Emmanouil Kompogiannis, a culinary virtuoso with experience in Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe From the world-renowned Easo of San Sebastian to Munich's Michelin-starred Acqurello and Lyon's La Tasse, Kompogiannis' journey led him to London's prestigious dining scene, where he worked under Jason Atherton at the Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social and ran kitchens at Claridges and the Petersham Hotel
Vivian's vision for Yayaka was inspired by a touching family memory – her grandmother's famous pita made with leek and feta cheese, a dish no one could resist This spirit of home-cooked love and tradition is what Yayaka aims to deliver, with recipes rooted in the culinary heritage of Greek grandmothers from all over the country They collaborate with small businesses in Greece to source topquality products, ensuring every bite transports you to a Greek home.
Our culinary journey at Yayaka began with starters of Octopus (served with Santorini Fava, Squid Ink, and Caperberries) and Prawns Saganaki (Prawns with Confit Lemon, Focaccia, and Kariki Cheese) Both dishes were utterly delicious, setting the stage for a memorable meal For mains, we enjoyed the Fish of the Day (Sea Bass with Celeriac and Kozani Saffron) and Lamb Giouvetsi (Lamb with Orzo, Carob, and Katiki Domokou Cheese), as well as a unique Watermelon Risotto Each dish was meticulously crafted, light, and evocative of a sunny beach in Greece, despite the rain pouring outside
We concluded our meal by sharing a delightful Galatoboureko (Fillo pastry with turmeric, rose, and ice cream), a sweet end to a wonderful evening Every dish at Yayaka is a testament to the love and tradition that inspired its creation, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a genuine taste of Greece

SAVOURING EALING
HANNAH NORRIS ON THE EVOLUTION AND FUTURE OF THE BOROUGH'S CULINARY SCENE
We had the pleasure of interviewing the very fabulous Hannah Norris, founder of Nourish PR, who shared her perspectives on the culinary landscape of Ealing Since launching her solo PR venture in 2010 after years in big agencies, Hannah has become a trusted name in food and restaurant PR, known for her personalised approach and deep industry connections Based in Northfields, Hannah shares her insights on the area ' s vibrant food scene, drawing on her experience of launching some of the capital's most celebrated restaurants and working with renowned brands Her passion for her craft and her local community is evident as she discusses the evolving trends and hidden gems that make Ealing a unique culinary destination.
As someone who has launched many of London’s favourite restaurants, how have you seen the culinary landscape of Ealing evolve over the past decade, and what do you think has driven these changes?
What a great question! We have seen lots of changes in the past decade, thanks mainly to the arrival of Dickens Yard and the whole development around Picturehouse behind Bond Street Places such as Tonkotsu, Turtle Bay, Wagamama, Pho, Las Iguanas and Gails etc probably wouldn’t have ventured to Ealing without the influx of new, younger residents We’re lucky to have brilliant, widely-revered restaurants such as Reineta, championing the best of Spanish produce and cooking; Tony’s Pita, always buzzing and busy, Yayaka - bringing 'Greek Granny’ cooking to the fore
"Ealing is becoming known for its diverse and dynamic food scene. "
There have been some sad casualties over the last few years though I think we all collectively loved and really miss Charlotte’s Place and Charlottes W5; whilst not always perfect, having this level of cooking in our little corner of London was so special, and we were all grateful to have somewhere ‘posh’ to eat out on our doorsteps without having to travel further than Chiswick or Hammersmith And years before that, we were lucky enough to have Parade, a Michelin-starred restaurant no less, which was wonderful! The Clock in Hanwell was also really well-loved, as was The Walpole (I was so sad when that closed - ditto Kerbisher & Malt for fish ’ n ’ chips) These places brought a level of classiness to Ealing that has never been matched since, sadly.
There are many long-standing restaurants of which Ealing is very proud Santa Maria made Ealing their first home and moved to Bond Street a few years ago to be able to feed more people. Pulp, Ealing Grocer and The Moon and Maybe are still here and a brilliant antidote to the chain restaurants we have Meadow has now closed, but Osteria del Portico has re-emerged to packed houses along with Monty’s and Atlantis on Pitshanger Lane We need the independents to keep opening in Ealing otherwise Ealing will just become another high street with homogenous chains along it
Ealing is becoming known for its diverse and dynamic food scene. What unique qualities or trends are you currently noticing in Ealing's culinary offerings, and how do they compare to other parts of London?
Ealing is ever so slightly running the risk of becoming chain hell but what I’m delighted to see is that we seem to be attracting the right kind of chains Tonkotsu, Bobo Social, Butchies, Pho, Wasabi, Franco Manca and even Popeyes are all great brands to have here I’m thrilled to read just yesterday that the highly revered Cantonese restaurant Three Uncles will soon be making its debut in Ealing too Where we suffer a bit is the lack of ’Shoreditch’ type appeal, which is still the destination for the cool kids who are opening up fun, independent wine bars and small plates restaurants We have Pulp and Patri and one or two other delightful evening destination places but It would be wonderful to see more of these in the future Ealing is full of young people who are hungry and have disposable income, so why the hold up? As a fairly new mum myself, I’d love to be able to get out once a week to somewhere which makes me feel like I live in a really cool part of London - small plates, good, natural and English wines, excellent produce, independently owned
“The opportunity to make Ealing a first home for a restaurant - whether it be an independent or a chainis immense.”
Given your extensive experience and connections in the food industry, what opportunities do you see for new restaurants or food businesses in Ealing, and how can they best leverage the local community to achieve success?
Ealing is one of the biggest boroughs in London The opportunity to make Ealing a first home for a restaurant - whether it be an independent or a chain - is immense. I’d like to see fewer cafes and more restaurants, creating more opportunities for the owners and more variation for us punters Ealing is both full of young professionals and families - those children will grow into teenagers and young professionals here - so there are tons of opportunities!

We started our evening with cocktails that were fresh and delightful, setting a perfect tone for the weekend ahead The menu is eclectic and intriguing, offering a wide array of options from Mediterranean classics to contemporary delights like vegan Thai curry and fillet steaks. THE IMPACT OF FOOD ON NEURODIVERSITY
HOW TARGETED NUTRITION CAN ENHANCE ADHD MANAGEMENT AND COGNITIVE HEALTH
Understanding the role of nutrition in managing neurodiversity, particularly conditions like ADHD, sheds light on how dietary choices can significantly influence cognitive function and overall wellbeing Emily Fawell, a Nutritional Therapist and ADHD coach based in Ealing, draws from her extensive experience to explore these connections and offer practical insights
Emily's journey into ADHD coaching was prompted by her son ' s diagnosis during university "He struggled with independence and studying, which led us to suspect ADHD," she shares. This personal experience ignited Emily's quest to learn more about ADHD and its
management, including the crucial role of nutrition
"For individuals with ADHD, maintaining a balanced diet poses unique challenges," explains Emily "Issues such as difficulty in meal preparation and erratic eating habits can exacerbate symptoms." Moreover, the tendency towards dopamine-seeking behaviours, such as consuming sugary and processed foods, can further complicate symptom management by disrupting blood sugar levels
Emily underscores the importance of specific dietary choices to support cognitive function and brain health in
individuals with ADHD "Omega-3 rich foods, such as salmon and flaxseed, are essential for brain function and blood sugar regulation," she advises. She also recommends opting for unrefined carbohydrates over their refined counterparts to sustain steady glucose levels, crucial for optimal brain function. Conversely, certain foods can aggravate ADHD symptoms "Foods high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, caffeine and processed foods can disrupt blood sugar balance," Emily notes Managing blood sugar levels is a cornerstone of her approach, aimed at enhancing energy levels, concentration, and stress management for all clients
"Maintaining a balanced diet poses unique challenges for individuals with ADHD."
Practical meal planning strategies form a key aspect of Emily's guidance "Planning balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates ensures stable energy levels throughout the day," she suggests She emphasises the importance of easy access to nutritious snacks like fruits, nuts, and yoghurt to mitigate the temptation of unhealthy options
Reducing reliance on processed foods and maintaining proper hydration are also pivotal "Cooking from scratch and drinking adequate water are simple yet effective ways to support brain function and overall health," Emily advises.
In conclusion, Emily Fawell's holistic approach integrates nutritional therapy with ADHD coaching to empower individuals in managing their symptoms effectively Her insights highlight the transformative potential of personalised nutrition in enhancing the lives of those with neurodiverse conditions.
