TUG June 2024

Page 1

Welcome to another TUG.

It’s been a busy spring for EAMG.

There have been many rides, visits and other activities recently. Michel will update you on some of those in his “Chairman’s Piece“ and I have some photos to share in this edition of TUG.

I personally have been busy collaborating with “The Old Salt Loft” in Burnham-on -Crouch and am delighted to tell you we now have an EAMG merchandise shop.

Our previous attempts to bring you EAMG branded merchandise have proved difficult as all options available at the time gave someone a logistical nightmare ordering, collecting payments and distributing merchandise. Occasionally we pre-ordered stock of more popular items but that was an unsustainable financial commitment. I worked out that even our modest range of garments amounts to more than 550 combinations of style, size and colour.

The solution to those old problems is the new EAMG Webshop where anyone can place orders for EAMG branded merchandise.

Find links to the new shop, the online version of this magazine and all of our social media via our website or on Linktree using the QR code below. You’ll also find a link to our membership form there when you need it.

CHAIRMAN’S PIECE

Hello everyone.

How time flies between TUG issues and Graham Simpkins gently reminding me when the editorial deadline is. Despite the very poor weather this year it seems the bikes are now out and about again. Have to say there is a lot of detritus on the roads, in between the potholes! Except Wales it seems. Three happy committee members had a few days in Mid Wales together at Ty Morgans in Rhayader, it has bike parking, good food, we had good weather, great roads and lovely company. I have been to Wales many times, but on this visit discovered one of the most awesome landscapes/areas I have ever been, left me very emotional being in such a wonderful environment. It is called The Devils Staircase, not far from Devils Bridge. I won’t say any more than if the weather is ok you really should go, if the weather is poor, I would not recommend as it could be very challenging, even dangerous.

EAMG have been busy with events lately, firstly Lings Triumph asked us to attend their open days in Dunmow, giving us good exposure and the chance to chat or have an observed ride with their customers. We hope we can build on this relationship longer term and hopefully this could also feed us new members too. Please do let EAMG know if you have any suggestions on how we might attract new members, it is always an area of interest and very important.

We are busy preparing for our first SRS day of the year June 2nd (slow riding skills). The observers have undertaken out of hours training in preparation for you, with the day especially structured by Colin Foley from the training team. We must thank Colin and the team for all their efforts, please remember we are all volunteers, with busy lives just like you all, but still find A LOT of time to devote to EAMG. These things do not happen without a lot of hard work and dedication. It should not be taken for granted.

We had a fantastic visit with a great and very informative guided tour by Bryce of the De Havilland Aircraft Museum. We were all feeling the

same afterwards, a fantastic visit thoroughly enjoyed by us all, and we were very glad this was put together by Eamg, one of the many group benefits. It is very nice, and important to have activities which are not always centred around riding, we have time to chat about everything else too, besides bikes and when we have done that we return to bikes!

I had the pleasure of leading the May full members ride. It was a fine day, slightly shorter than normal 90 mile route, but as it was on Hertfordshire roads many were unfamiliar, more my manor and everyone seemed delighted with it. I then had to ride into London for the final match of the season at Arsenal, if I had not been on a motorcycle I would have missed half the match, some might say not such a bad thing.

Another benefit of membership is the now famous annual Xmas quiz. I am delighted to say that Chris Johnson is very much looking forward to entertaining us again as usual on December group night. I am looking forward to it very much Chris, I do expect to win, no pressure there then.

A huge amount of effort from the training team and committee to keep what seem like minor activities taking place. Very much like a swan, all looks ok on the surface but an awful lot more going on behind the scenes. As ever we DO NEED NEW COMMITTEE members, especially any human who can use a computer or social media!! We have asked before on several occasions, but the response is somewhat limited, in fact let’s be honest, pretty poor. We cannot function without new volunteers, there are volunteers who have given you and EAMG so much, but quite rightly some need to step down and spend time elsewhere. Please do make contact for a little chat.

Nearly time for me to go, but lastly please do recommend us to your friends, and please do make the very most of what we have to offer, which is a lot.

I thank you all for your continued support, I thank the training team and committee for their generosity and professionalism in making the wheels carry on turning. We have a wonderful group, lets keep it that way.

Ride safely and enjoy the summer riding season.

A Look Back at Recent EAMG Events

EAMG at Lings Triumph in Great Dunmow. Members of the training team took Lings customers on a short observed ride whilst others chatted with customers at the dealership, extolling the benefits of EAMG membership.

It was a nice evening for May Group Night which saw a good turnout of bikes including this classic BSA, restored by Clive Toobey over a period of four years.

As already mentioned by Michel, a group of EAMG members enjoyed a fantastic visit to the De Havilland Aircraft Museum. Our guided tour was preceded by coffee and biscuits which is always a good sign.

News from the BMF

Ministerial Roundtable with Guy Opperman (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Roads and Local Transport) (In Person Meeting attended by BMF, IAM RoadSmart, MAG, TfL, MCIA, NMC. Plus, DfT officials and Mark Winn from DVSA)

3 key items on the agenda

i. Bus Lanes:

The Minister made it clear from the responses so far received to the Bus Lane Consultation (over 11,000) that there was "broad consensus that default access for motorcycles should be allowed but he also made clear that Ministers would need to give due weight to other safety arguments, such as the potential for increased conflict with other road users. BMF will emphasise in our official response to the consultation that in the various trials conducted over recent years that such a conflict was not seen and given the "safety" focus by Ministers and officials that default access for motorcycles offers significantly improved safety outcomes for motorcyclists, removes the current confusion between differing LA policies (a safety issue in itself) as well as delivering reduced congestion and pollution outcomes.

ii. Licensing reform

The Minister agreed that a review was long overdue and he confirmed, subject to the agreement of the Secretary of State, a motorcycle licensing review would be announced in June (any announcement is however now unlikely as we have entered the Purdah period in the run up to the General Election). Any review will be to inform a much wider Government Transport Bill to be delivered post General Election (which may or may not gain traction with an incoming Labour government). It was clear from the Minister's statements that he was currently feeling a "lot of pressure" on the "large cohort of riders who are riding in a dangerous and anti-social way and causing lots of accidents" and that he was concerned that any licensing "simplification" would leak into the "anti-social rider" area, where "simplification was not required" but rather what was required was "stronger enforcement."

ii. CBT Changes

Only a brief discussion. Mainly for stakeholders to emphasise that the changes are already agreed and not part of the review, though some aspects of the individual proposals may need to be revisited.

The meeting closed with an agreement that the Motorcycle Strategic Group should be convened (now cancelled following the announcement of the General Election) to consider the outcome of this meeting and to start considering a few things in advance of the official announcement of the Review (now unlikely)

Any action in these areas will now be subject to post-election consideration by the new government.
