THE FLYING GAP
5m/s Last afternoon, in front of a modest crowd of spectators, the labours of the 5m/s workshop finally took flight. The nervous team members arrived at the scene, not sure if their weird object would actually take off, but once it did, they attracted the full attention of the slowly emptying beach. An amazed EASian spectator likened the scene to a flock of birds taking off the sea.

In the next few days the team plans to make a structure twice the size and attempt to fly it. They should have at least 4 of the pyramids to work with by the end of the week. We’re really looking forward to more aeronautical acrobatics from the 5m/s team.

EASA TALKS Many EASians preparing for the raunchy Nocturne/beach party seemed to have forgotten that you can have time for everything - as long as you never wash or sleep - and have therefore missed yesterday lecture and movie screenings by Arata Mori. Mori, a film maker/video artist showed three extracts of films listed below if anyone would like to catch up. EASA LEGACY Yesterday Scotland cooked at Tapaland, showing two contrasting snacks from their country. At first it looked as though Scotland would never finish their dishes. The kitchen had to be evacuated due to smoke levels from frying mars bars. Followed by an impromptu ceilidh dance with Scots abandoning the task in hand. as they smoked out the whole kitchen and started a ceilidh dance in the courtyard. But finally they got there - see the recipes below: Deep Fried Mars Bar Ingredients for 100 fried Mars Bars First step the Batter mix: 800g Flour 200g Cornflour 20 Eggs 1.5L Sparkling water 1.5L Milk Salt Preparation: Add all flour and eggs into a bowl and mix well. Gradually add water and milk until smooth and runny. Season with salt. Dip mars bar into the batter until completely covered. Place in a deep fat fryer and cook until golden. Tattie Scones with smoked fish Ingredients: 3kg Potatoes 740g Self-raising Flour 370g Butter Salt Topping: Smoked local salmon with Crème fraiche and dill Scrambled eggs and tomatoes Lemon to Garnish
UP NEXT - UKRAINE
Easa was founded in 1981 in Liverpool, with a newspaper to keep the students updated. This later turned into Umbrella. We have decided to include some snipets of the 1981 publication below to see how times have, or maybe have not changed. The event was much smaller back then, with close to 300 students attending and for less time. Somehow the network remained strong and has lasted for 35 years!

Several nights ago an anonymous artist left a marvellously subtle installation in one of the toilets; their fish placed in a condom was a unique assemblage-meditation exploring the topics of unceirtanty and mortality. We were unable to photograph this temporary installation but one of the few lucky spectators recreated it for us in detail.
Gossip cat was on the prowl amongst you again last night boys and girls, and I really have been well fed. The Horoscope party presented an opportunity for many to seek out their true astrological matches. Did you find yourselves stargazing in each other’s eyes? Nah, you were snogging as many Capricorns as you could get your hands on.
Today we were told the fantastic story of how Sofia and Carlos from Costa Rica made their way to EASA... a journey that took over a week! They made their way through San Jose, Panama and then on to Amsterdam and Berlin by plane.From Berlin, they took a train to Bologna. This was where things got a little disrupted. After boarding a train that would supposedly take them to Lithuania, and having payed out a great deal of money for the tickets, they found themselves being told “Nie nie nie!” by the train conductors, who would not let them continue until a visa had been shown. This was confusing for our travellers, as they had believed there to be no need for a Visa for Lithuania. It was, in the end, a ten year old translator who informed them that they were on a train headed for Moscow, via Belarus. Stranded in Bologna (not altogether an unhappy situation), the pair found that there were no reasonably priced tickets for the remaining distance to Lithuania and all busses were fully booked. After a night spent sleeping in the airport, They managed to find a flight to palanga (Initially they booked a flight that was in fact not due til December), and they were once more on their way. Another night spent in an airport and stranded once again with no busses, and so close to the finish line, our brave heroes made an failed attempt at hitch hiking, and eventually resolved to take a cab to Klaipėda. Their delightful driver fed them cookies en route. In Klaipėda, they were lucky enough to run into our own Robert Manion [IRL], who joined them for the ferry crossing, and finally on to Nida!
A sleeping Norwegian awoke to the shameless vocalizations of a Malteser and an Northern Irish participant in the throes of passion on one of the balconies. The latter awoke the following morning with a very wet sleeping bag. Filthy.

Careful, guys! Our EASA bar should apparently have more than enough booze for you, but if you ever have a thirst for something different, brought from the store or your personal stash, steer clear off the bar! If the security guys don’t steal your heart, they will definitely steal you liquor, and you’ll never see it again. Try avoiding this grave injustice by using plastic bottles or merely token yourself away at the bar; the glass bottles seem to be some sort of a security hazard, although so far our EASians have been using them in the most civilised manner, so we’re kind of confused with this suddenly strict security measure. *** PLEASE WASH YOUR HANDS*** With 500 people living together and sharing all kinds of things, please look after yourself and prevent spreading of illness.

While walking back from the bar at night one EASian spotted proof that sex in a hammock is not only possible, it is something of a gymnastic art form. It can take a while to get into the swing of things though. Be careful, EASians! One of our participants managed to accidentally slip and fall in the toilet while mildly drunk, landing on a steaming pile of the fresh and organic EASA compost. HUMANS OF NIDA
Nindaugas , 36 , Lithuanian Nindaugas is owner of the restaurant and bar Zuiko Darzas, on Nida beach near EASA bar. The bar is open in May, until the end of September. Generally, in the winter season he goes back to Vilnius. Zuiko Darzas has a relaxing atmosphere. It serves great pizzas and plays a film every night at 10pm. According to Nindaugas, the pizza oven has made a big difference to the success of the bar. They offer more than just pizzas, in the day you can rent skateboards that hang from the tree outside and at night they also have a room for rent upstairs. Over the weekend there will be a DJ for a party. You should definitely visit Zuiko Darzas and taste the delicious pizzas, especially, if you are not full up with EASA lunch or dinner!
