NAFPLION

Excursion time on Monday! We hope all of you have handed the 5 euro fee to your NCs or right at the INFO POINT. Right after the National evening, 8.30 AM Monday, we are gonna be put into buses that will take us to Nafplion. The town was the capital of Greece from 1829 to 1834 and is the place where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of the modern Greek state, was assassinated. Nafplion, with a population of 13,822, is the capital of the prefecture of Argolis and the province of Nafplion, wikipedia tells us. Tourism popped up slowly in the 1960s, but not as much as other parts of Greece. Still, Nafplion tends to attact many tourists from Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. Nafplion enjoys a very sunny and mild climate, even by Greek standards. Consequently it has become a popular day- or weekend road trip destination for Athenians in wintertime. Nafplion is a port, with fishing and transport ongoing, although the primary source of local employment currently is

tourism, with two beaches on the other side of the peninsula..

EASA was too drunk for anything possible not happening yesterday, so we hope you have used our language lessons already... Lots of dirty dancing and naked flesh. Girls carried home on guy’s shoulders (like in the stone age). In the morning, people managed to wake and find themselves 10 meters from their places! But on their own mattresses! Weird.. By the way, don’t you miss Dr. Love? WE DO! One more! It’s not a gossip, it’s a fact! The local police paid a visit to the party yesterday, actually, early morning today (4-5 AM). It was second time for the hand of the law, as a workshop was interrupted by the officers (read on the 3rd page). This meant that we have to finish dancing :-((

Participants! A lot of people seem to just skip their workshops (even Umbrella feels the syndrom). Also, one poor Dutch tutor complained that he felt a lack of people and was immediately informed that two of his participants were spotted trying to merge into CO:DEC workshop! Guys, let’s make this together, it will be even more fun. It’s not a school, right?

Look, It’s Doso! is one of the most ambitious projects being undertaken at EASA007. Comprising two “advertisements” for Elefsina, the workshop involves an array of different techniques, including 2D stopgap animation and vector visualisation of the city. Some of the initial sketches produced by the Russian members of the workshop can be seen near the entrance to the hall, and they are ridiculously funky: it’s absolutely going to stop people in their tracks. What is perhaps most impressive is the scope of the workshop, in that it seeks to project a dynamic vision of Elefsina through reference to mythology, traffic, industry, architecture - in short, all the elements that make up an urban experience.

Iroon sq is a public space knitted into the urban fabric of Elefsina. Its business is due to the artery of pedestrians flowing between the sea front and the main town st. It is surrounded by an interesting mix of active and inactive buildings, including a Greek basilica, Greek Archaelogical Site, Town Hall, Shops, Cafes & a Bank. An interesting facet of the square is how it has a green belt of mature trees which protects the peace of the square from the activities around it. The theme of City Index is addressed thoroughly in the second advertisement, which projects a fourth layer of experience, a fourth dynamic, on the existing and readily identifiable layers of Elefsina. This production relies on a different series of techniques and a different skill-set than the first, and serves to highlight the adaptable nature both of the workshop and of the involved media themselves. Dijana Omeragic and Gizem Candemir have combined together in a short space of time to produce a dynamic set of advertisements in a variety of media. The scope of the workshop is massive given the short period of time, and the participants should be commended for their dedication and range of expertise. Umbrella really looks forward to seeing the final results at the exhibition.

engage. Thus, we propose to introduce a LANDMARK to reignite its role as an interactive node in the CITY INDEX of Elefsina. The first part of the workshop involved analysis of the site and how people use and interaction with this space, one of the most important public spaces in Elefsina. In a city with little green space, and lots of pollution, the site can be seen as an urban oasis in the surrounding chaos. Working in tandem with the analysis of the site, the participants have also been experimenting with card, designing and testing various prototypes of joints and systems at model scale. The workshop will culminate with the design and construction of an intervention in the square, igniting this urban void with a new function. The workshop will be presented at the square next Saturday and easa participants are encouraged to come out an experience the city.

How are things? Are the tanlines already seen? No injuries or sickness (Boris, get well! We are sending our hugs!)? We spent all day working hard today, preparing both the paper and the TV... Yesterday the EASA TV was really strange even for us, but tonight we are gonna make it up big time! Be sure to stay in the hall after the lecture is over (around 10) and prepare yourself for today's overview (we want to thank Marten, who was an absolute hero of today) and some archive footage.

INTERVIEW

Christoph Kellenberger of OOS Architects in Zurich, Switzerland, delivered a short lecture to the EASA Assembly. For this we have to thank CO:DEC workshop, because it’s a part of their plan on world domination! Mr. Kellenberger shortly presented the concept of OOS Architects and introduced few examples of their work to us. A bar, a recycling thingie with green parking area, a proposal for Swiss pavilion in Shangai 2010 (didn’t win), a massive aquapark (wasn’t built) and a bright and inspiring office... Lovely work and very nice sense of humour, by the way! Christoph was good enough to answer a few questions after the lecture: Umbrella (U): So, we know that you’ve been at EASA before ... what made you come back? Christoph Kellenberger (CK): I was invited back. I was in Bergun before, which is more normal, because it’s in Switzerland and obviously I’m from Switzerland ... and this time, because Goncalo and I know each other well, I was invited back again. U: And what do you think of this sort of less-structured education? How do you think this more holistic teaching compares with traditional lecturing? CK: Well ... I don’t think it’s either-or ... I think you have to have both. You know, I was a bad student! It was my own choice to get excited about architecture, and that’s what you have to do, get excited about it and follow the things that make you excited. U: What do you think of the situation here, the organisation? CK: I think it’s a good job, there’s a lot of potential with this space, you can have a lot of fun.

Devilish cocktail of misbehaviour

Yesterday was perhaps the best combination of intensity, relaxation and romance. The early birds could enjoy strolling down Nicolaudus street, where a lovely local jazz-rock band was having a small concert. There were mostly locals and very few EASAians and the atmosphere was just incredibly relaxing. It felt incredibly good after yesterday’s mayhem. Eventually the Mediterranean coastline promenade feeling lost its appeal and it was time to join the bloodthirsty EASAians, eager for a new party. We were all quite surprised to hear a second edition of meditative tracks, however this time it was with a twist. A 6-member “band”, The Curators, was actually doing a live performance, combining a number of different media; so there was the two DJs as well as a video artist, a VJ, a chello player and so on. The music, or better minimal-ish ambient-ish noisy sounds, they produced was nothing short of hypnotising and it was a thrill to see it produced live.

The music only stopped in the wee hours of the morning when we got kicked out sometime before sunrise. Oh my god, that’s sabotage! Although that didn’t stop some people from returning to their beds only until breakfast. We have heard people talking this morning, that Sangria party was a bit like National evening (that’s tomorrow, by the way), and we think it might be because of the following reason. In EASA, when you make a sangria, it’s a bit like Long island ice tea. Wine, vodka, gin. Yeah, and the fruit as well! It’s a big bonus of the magical Spanish drink - the vitamins that your mum told you not to forget to consume come together with the alcohol! Maybe some tomatoes could be used? The brits were heard talking about cucumbers in gin for tomorrow’s night... Don’t forget some sausages!

Woot woot, that's the sound of the police... Just listen to this. Yesterday late at night (2 am) the Serbian-led Urban Stripes workshop intended to do some, how to say, road art - we definitely miss a nice attitude towards pedestrians in this busy town! Anyway, as soon as they started doing this, the police showed up and said that they can't. Not at all. The organizers tried to help, but oh well, EASA doesn't own the roads here... But does this story end here? We don't think so. Go guerilla art!
