FIVE DAYS IN AND CRUISING
We are nearly a week into this years EASA, and still no sight of firemen, corruptable police or angry neighbours. Apart from the incessant heat turning half the day into siesta-time there have been no problems to write about in EL PARASOL. This editor caught up with a few organisers in a shady corner of the bar, in an effort to prise out any crisis that they are not telling us about. "There is never a problem," Javi D told me. "As long as Blanca [Domingues] is about we will be OK." Blanca has been on the phone for the last two months, so was unavailable for an interview, but she is still smiling and looking as good as ever, which I took as a promising sign.

Every organising team has one or two members who unfortunately don't get the exposure they deserve, so make sure you keep the organisers happy. I went looking for Fran's views, but was told he was off in a dark room nursing a hangover - at least the Spanish organisers know how to relax!

We asked one of the participants to tell us something about the workshop: What is the main concept of your work? Sanja: “To make short videos about all the workshops and people… Something between documenting and music videos.” Have you made any films yet? Sanja: ”Everybody made something… We have many themes and stories to work on. We already made the first episode about EASA. There will be 3-4 episodes in total.” Where will you project your work? Sanja: “Probably on the fake TV screen next to the huge crocodile on the tent…” At the moment they are located at the bar, editing their videos in a tense atmosphere. All of them are so devoted to their work.
We asked the Marko to tell us something about his workshop:
Avanzada Tutors: Kieran Donnellan (IE) Garragh Brathnach(IE) This process-driven workshop seems to have had a really good start. Upstairs Garragh says “it’s great that everyone is so involved with the process” and in this tense room creativity is sparkling! Jenny (UK) is among the team of four participants in a group examining the spaces in between the different units of the pavilion in the third for of the East wing of the School.
What is the main concept of your work? Marko: “Well, we’ll be making short animations in artificial environment. Every group of participants will have their own short animation.” And what will you use those animations for? Marko: “For VJ-ing of course! It´s the easiest way to make an exciting atmosphere. All you need is good screen…” Where will you project your work? Marko: “The location is a secret, but I can assure you our performance will make you wet your pants!” In general, the animations are going to last for 15 seconds on average. The themes are based on simple movement and basic objects with light rendering. Participants are happy and quite good looking.
Out in the courtyard Johannes’ and Nico’s (Finland) experience from the navy come in handy when trying out different techniques with the ropes. Michael (IE) is eager to get started with hammer and nails “hopefully the design will be finished enough tomorrow for the real construction to start” His only worry is how his Irish skin handle the Spanish sun. EASA FM Tutors: Clemens Conditt (AT) Jakob Braun (DE) Thomas Klien (AT) Verena Theil All enthusiastic in a small room on the first floor, participants were busy taping radio, getting them ready to pass one to each workshop later on today. EASA FM is planning to start broadcasting today as well, having an abundant timetable for all. Verana explained how a WISH BOX will be placed in the bar area, so anyone who would like to listen to a particular song, should put their requests in it, otherwise participants can give their playlists directly to EASA FM. Taking on a further professional approach, UMBRELLA news will be cast everyday at 7pm and 8pm. Just tune in tonight to listen to all that Cecily has to say about what´s going on and what`s bound to happen at EASA in the next few days. Verana insisted “I need to make a list of all the things that I just said to you!!” We are promised a surprise tomorrow, well, everyone loves surprises....
Bidding [ˈbʌɪdɪŋ] verb – The main event of the INCM. The countries who want to host EASA and INCM present their proposals. And the NC’s spend a ridiculous long time discussing which proposal to decide upon. Consensus [kənˈsɛnsəs] noun The reason the bidding takes such long time. Consensus is our decision
It´s not only EASA that planning to deconstruct Cadiz! Next door at CASA DE IBEROAMERICA (that we wrote about in last issue) there is a competition exhibition of the monument of the 200 years anniversary of the constitution. As the Orgadiz workshop D. Antonio Angel Garcia Moreno, the architect of the winning proposal, has worked a lot with folding paper. The site of the new monument is at Paseo de Canalejas, which means the same as the Orgadiz pavilion (!?) Will they be neighbors or will only one stand in the end?
Quota [ˈkwəʊtə] noun The reason every second person you meet is either Spanish, Finnish or English. Previous, future and present organizers have a larger quota. Working your ass off pays. A final comment, in order to talk with everyone in EASA you have 17 minutes for each person. Presuming you work, that is talk, 8 hours a day (but you do not have weekends off). This means you have just a bit more than a minute if you want to talk to the same person everyday. So do not take it personally if someone sneaks away when you are having a conversation. /KB

TOILETS – SHOWING SOME REOkay so we have all noticed the recent closing of the out side showers, inside showers, tutor toilets and even some other toilets. Now while this might seem like another ploy to have people meet each other while waiting in the queue, there is actually method behind the madness. Apparently the neighbour (a gay policeman) who lives on the top floor of the school has been without water since the start of EASA, this is due to the poor water pressure on the top floor, resulting from having 450 people suddenly living full time in a building designed for a couple of hundered small children during regular school hours. The plumber is arriving today to see if they can pump the water up to the policemans apartment. So in the mean time what are the solutions to put less stress onto the plumbing system at the EASA camp??

Just to be clear TOILET PAPER goes into the PLASTIC BAGS not the toilet. I know it sounds discusting but the alternatives are even worse!

SHOWERS • Well for a naked shower we have access to proper hot showering facilities from 68.30pm. • Instead of a shower you can always go for a swim. • Or just simply not shower- you will be smelling like sweat in 10minutes anyway
The following people have until 12 midnight tonight to pay for the excursion to the winery and beach. If you don't settle up with the info point, then the waiting list will be offered a space.
TOILETS • Otherwise we here at umbrella reccommend drinking hard liquor. Striaght up rum vodka, whisky and even rakia if you can. This means you will be drinking less liquids and have to pee less. • Getting hot and sweaty with a member of the opposite sex is also a good idea, any liquids you sweat out mean that you dont have to pee them out. • Only flushing if ita a number 2 • Puking in your mouth and swallowing it again, so that the toilets dont stink of vomite. • Dont wash your hands – there is no soap anyway • Go for a coffee or icecream in the town and do your business there

DE COUCH STRUCTION Can we continue experience the Coast of Spain or the narrow streets of Delhi in a sustainable way? YES WE CAN! Couchsurfing is getting bigger and bigger, presenting new couches (beds) all over the world every day. Has Couchsurfing started the solution of mass-tourism? Will the possibility to stay at people´s homes (for free) slow down the exploitation of the coast? For younger people this new way of travelling gets more popular, it´s an opportunity to see each town from the inhabitants perspective. But what about the older generations? The risk of losing Swedish coffee at the charter hotels will probably never get our own old ones (in Swedish: gubbar och gummor) to choose Couchsurfing. But if this community continue in this pace the creating of leisure cities will be history in a couple of years! So if you will continue traveling after EASA you should check it out! Maybe you then will find the Ingmar Bergman loving Italian, the surfing film director, the kayaking Canadian or Willy Smith. All of them offering a couch here in Cadiz! /GW

THE NETHERLANDS WIN EASA TALL COMPITITION! After laying down the challenge to have a Tall compitition on Tuesday the two groups of the serbians and the Dutch met after dinner yesterday. After a lot of smack talk from both parties, the groups started to debate about who and how they are measureing. Thankfully however El Presiedenté Thomas Cattrysse was on duty to run the whole proceedings. After settling all the arguments both teams agreed that they would select their 5 tallest people and lay them out hand to toe on the ground. Taking over the area beside the tent there was alot of pointing and giving out about gaps in the line before the photo finish where Thomas declaired The Netherlands the winner by a margin of a mear 5cm. A very dissappointed Serbian team vowed to have their victory in a basketball tournament but unfortunatly the Dutch declined. Congratdulations The Netherlands, officially EASAs tallest country!

LAST NIGHT: 2 PARTYS AND 3 REVIEWS
Last night was awesome. The easa army descended on the city of Cadiz like a pack of wolves hungry for beer and dancing. The first port of call was Nahu Bar. As the Umbrella team entered the party was well under way. it was packed! Sweat was dripping from the ceiling and that mixed with classic tunes such as ‘what is love’ brought back boozey memories of a stairwell party in easa Italia009. The music was vibrating from the speakers through the crowd lapping it up, but the temperatures soon reached unbearable levels and soon after participants could be seen escaping the venue, gasping for fresh air and cigarettes. Whispers of a visit from Joe Frame were rife and glimpses of the founding member of the high rise club could be seen in the gathering crowd outside Nahu. With the crowd itching for more craic, and Nahu well and truly torn to pieces – we migrated to Spam. On route the easa troops kept the energy flowing with sing song and a little bit of international flirting. Soon we arrived at Spam.It should be noted at this point that
Spam in the English language is a type of Canned meat, unfortunately the translation must have altered some what, as in Spanish it seemed to mean “shit club”. The crowd begged and pleaded with the bouncer, but we were by and large turned away leaving the troops some what irked. As in all wars, there are victims, and this night was no exception, the crowd spit in the chaos, some retreating back to the school, some finding solace in a quiet pint, but Umbrella fought on, eventually ending up at a club called Supersonic. The mood at Supersonic took a mellow turn, with a fresh and welcome breeze and lovely outdoor couches to lounge on. The remaining troops told tall tales of the night just gone and dare to dream of whats in store for the next few weeks. Even the organisers seemed to be taking a well deserved break. Rum and beer flowed, dances were dances and songs were sung. Umbrella says; the nights like GB

After a reckless walk through the old city of Cadiz we finally came to our destination. Everybody was armed with their favorite drinks and cigars. Some people even ate ice-creams to prepare for long exciting night. Once I entered the tight Nahu club, the African masks started screaming from the walls. The air was cool, and the room was just starting to fill up. Slowly people came through the double glass door. The Spanish youngsters watched us enviously from the street, while we were enjoying our fancy private party. The bold DJ was playing some
sexy mixes while people moved their sweaty bodies in ecstasy. There was no escape from the heat. Even if you left the building, you could hardly feel the change in the temperature. The only comfort has been brought by some cool drinks. It feels really good to be on EASA. It’s like the best assembly of wild teenagers in Europe! Join our parties, they are probably the best ones on the west coast of the old continent. Join us, because we are your friends and you’ll never be alone again. /AP

My head is spun round right round, echoes of Ke$ha and GaGa, a vague memory of Big Joe Frame's brother being overwhelmed and a pierced nipple. What happened last night? I've asked around the bar, and managed to put together a vague sequence of events. It all started when 300 people packed the tiny Nahu bar's moroccan themed walls. It wasn't long before the rear was taken over as an impromptu dancefloor with just enough room to wiggle hips with the nearest senorita. A nice mix of new and EASA classics were being spun by the DJ, inspiring memories from the veterans of the last night at Budapest: "They were hanging from the scaffolding!" one dino told me. This reviewer left during Haddaways /easa009's What is love?, because he wouldn't be able to top the ecstasy in the room. Round the corner at Cadiz's trendiest nightclub, hits by Beyonce, Kelis and Katy Perry soundtracked some sexy Dutch dancing, beautifully attired en masse in breton. We are now 5 nights in to easa011 and a number of hookups were spotted last night both in the club and after in our bar. My prediction is that there will be a few more at tonights party in the basement. My night started slipping away from me once the tequilla lemons had been replaced by lime flavoured alcohol, and disappered after 5 rounds of shots with Andraz, (AT/SI) Marko and Dejan (BiH). Lesson learnt. Thanks to anyone who helped me get home, and sincere apologies to anyone I offended. An afternoon nursing an Alker Seltzer and coffee should see me right for tonight. /AM

REVIEW
Yesterday MGM architects treated us to a marathon of projects. What stuck was the image of an office that successfully applies a minimal Spanish style to resolve complex issues of building in historical urban contexts. In lesser complex situations, the unifying strength of overly sculptural spaces run the risk of becoming an unquestioned celebration of a strong spatial polemic. None the less the lecture provided a candid view inside the local dynamic of building. Especially the project for the rehabilitation of 7 subsidized houses in Cadiz provided a disarming look behind the curtains of a decade long design process. Unexpected influences on the design provided challenges and opportunities for the project. The preserved ancient wall infuses the sculptural white space with a depth of materiality and wooden shutters mediate the abstract space. The final project shows a sincere concern for quality of public space and constitutes a beautiful example what a deep understanding of site and local culture can result in.
