FEED US NOW EASA people are hungry people. At the first breakfast, we already ate all the cereal for two days. At the pig roast we ate all of the potatoes that were supposed to be for vegetarians. On the second day we finished all the NINJA food before everybody had eaten. So some people had to find the local pizza place to feed themselves. WASTELANDS organisers have offered an explanation ‘They were supposed to make enough food for 500 people’. Clearly perplexed, Ville took it upon himself to bring everybody out for a candlelit dinner in a local eatery. Although there was room for 40 people and it was announced in a lecture, only a lucky 20 people got to eat the tasty finnish pasta dish and have nice civilised conversation while people called ‘waiters’ took our plates away to be cleaned. So let’s hope that the portions will be increased for tonight’s dinner and we can be full of energy for the busy days ahead BUT don’t be greedy. This is not a FAT camp but we might just lose some weight..
WORKSHOP FAIR CULTURE TRAM Everybody crammed into the bar yesterday morning looking for their ideal workshop. Motivated by a desire to develop some new skills, explore a personal interest or just experiment with something really crazy to open the mind. It was a tough decision for all with so many exciting new ideas among over 40 workshops (an unprecedented number for any easa). True to the Wastelands theme there was a lot of demolition, destruction and re-use but also some workshops who wanted to explore the more theoretical and ideological concept of a wasteland, others choosing to explore bodily movements and visual perception. As usual, the selection process was fraught with hard decisions about how to select participants and while the organisers tried to implement a new system of ‘2nd choices’, there were a lot of people who were not assigned a workshop. In ROUND TWO participants should check to see if they were selected for a workshop and if NOT they should sign have signed up for one of the workshops still looking to fill places. SO if you are not in a workshop, you can join EASA.FM/UMBRELLA/EASA.TV we are upstairs in the IT lab and we are looking for some people to help us document #EASA012 #WASTELANDS
At 1pm tomorrow and Friday you can take the no.5 tram from the opera to experience live music and a cool exhibition of wastelands. It will circle the line until 4pm so you can jump on at any time. VIP guest from Ireland Blathmhac will be entertaining us with his traditional elbow pipes - he’s been practising around EASA SITE. Its a good chance to try out that expensive travel card you have all been given…

We embark on our first search t enquire what the workshops have been up to in the first 2 days
W O R K S H O P. R E V I E W S All workshops seem to have started working in some way or another – Some are still in design stages while other participants can be seen around carrying material and preparing for the construction process. Umbrella will be going around workshops, covering all the stuff that is going on, questioning what participants are doing, what they’re planning to create and keeping you all updated on the progress of the workshops here in Helsinki.

Participants were seen this morning carrying long sticks across the site. No, they’re not planning to set a massive bonfire (we’ll leave that for BURN). Inipi is planning to build this traditional Native American sauna by tonight which all of us can use! The “hardest working group”, as Connor (Ireland) referred to his team mates, will then be designing and eventually building a contemporary sauna by the end of the 2 weeks, and again, all of us would be able to make use of their creation. Apart from construction, this workshop also aims to embark on a spiritual journey which will involve intense meditation. You will hopefully be able to identify the participants from the feathers they are planning to wear around their heads!
“Yesterday we sent a Nokia to heaven”. Those were the first words that came out of the tutors’ mouths as I asked them about their workshop so far. This was actually a failed experiment, even though the team is looking forward to succeed in future experiments. Their works will be installed all around Helsinki, as they will be producing small projects every day, with their final product to be a floating structure on site (which we hope won’t fly away this time!) KUKI WONDERLAND I’m sure every one of us has at least stopped once to stare at the people in the middle of the playground moving in all sorts of funny ways. There is however a lot of thought involved behind those funny movements. As Judit Keri, a contemporary dancer from Hungary herself explained, the participants are encouraged to move and work their bodies with a various number of elements – ground, space, force and an image. With these exercises, the participants are discovering themselves while at the same time “creating body images in space”. The main aim of this workshop is to play with these elements around us and experimenting with the freedom and infinite number of possibilities we can create.

DEMOLITION Well as the name of this workshop clearly implies, the aim is to eventually demolish and destruct their creations. The participants have split up in small groups and they were sent around to explore and come up with a small scale destruction project as a preparation for the main one. They have to think about the materials they will be using, the ways in which they will be destructing their construction and the best way to document it. The SUGAR CUBE KILLERS, Roland (Estonia) and Marton (Hungary) found a simple way of destroying sugar cubes by throwing them in puddles – well, at least, the rain did serve for something.

BURN
The first step of this workshop was some serious brainstorming sessions about what might be the eventual brick-reading room. Yesterday participants walked around Helsinki and visited a various number of buildings by Aalto as an inspiration tour. This workshop will be experimenting with bricks, both new and recycled ones, and the various patterns that can be created. The participants will be working in small groups to produce various brick structures which will then be joined in one large reading space for everyone to enjoy.
EASAIANS were asked yesterday to identify some rituals using FIRE in their own cultures. In most places bonfires are used to mark the longest and shortest days of the year and witches are traditionally burned on a pyre but in some cases puppets or flags are burnt in protest or voodoo ceremonies. In a weird cult-like moment, a large group of white-sheet dressed mad scientists came together at the EASA bar and set an effigy on fire at midnight. Tutor Luis Hilti from Lichtenstein was bemused by some of the traditions but thought it was a bit early to determine if his participants should get married by making them jump over the fire holding hands. Nevertheless a few people leaped through the flames as the organisers watched with anxiousness. We look forward to seeing some bigger fires and burning structures by the end of the week.

STRANGE NATURE
When you ask a bunch of questions and mash all the answers together, you get a body of text that is quite surreal and impossible to reproduce in a linear process: - The unexpected makes me feel good, I have no idea of everything and nothing. - When im sleeping good I can fly with my head and have fun. - Inside myself in the nowhere with a lot of people, blue like a russian cake, there are more important things to love in a person than the smell but after you love someone the smell is important too I need everything in my body all have the purpose, talent sport music, art, fly, anything but I would like to understand better my body in space. - I cannot imagine myself living without any part of my body, my hips here in easa give me transcendental teletransportation and it feels curiously good. - While I sleep I can do everything, im superplastic and its very nice like icecream with a good smell. - In order to expand my perception, I want to know what other people think, i need with all my love and the rest of my body, then it tastes spicy, when its not happy its grey, all i want to do is run. - No experimentation is like non salty food.

At the end of the workshop all EASAians will be provided by these “explorer of the nature” with inhabitant structure, which will take place within the campus outside the buildings. I don’t know about you, guys, but I’m excited and looking forward to see the result!
WASTEBIKES Just when I appeared at their workshop area I immediately felt an atmosphere at the workshop full of energy and infectious enthusiasm. Crazy, funny and energetic guys David, Ali and Christian from Austria have 30 bikes, which are in a far from perfect condition, raw materials for the imagination! Participants are free to design and then construct any kind of weird and at the same time fantastic monocycle , bicycle, tricycle or any other vehicle which hasn’t been up to now. It’s only the first day of the work and they have already started working at 3 models of bikes, some of them are almost ready! Isn’t that astonishing? Some of the half ready models looked tricky and I even started worrying for those who would try them first. But the confidence of the tutors as well as their skills assured me that everything was under control. I’m almost positive that in the end of the workshops those NUMBER guys will blow our minds with these mechanical «creatures»!

ZEN AND THE ART OF BLANKET FORTS This daily semi-theoretical workshop is about embracing imperfection and evolution, letting go of the illusion of control and making space for spontaneity. To be a part of some experimental space making, find them at ten o’clock in the lounge each morning, or stop by the fort in the afternoon to join in on the discussion of issues relating to architecture, shelter and permanence.

Visioning Helsinki are looking to source a small crowd for their VIP guest tomorrow, David Lawlor Head of Urbanism Architecture and Design Scotland is holding a workshop on how to design for the civic economy so crowdsourcing can find a role in government decisions. This will help us to solve the ‘Wicked problems’ of the world such as housing for the elderly, obesity and sustainability. He will be presenting some projects and having a discussion about the role of the architect in strategic design. Venue: Above the computer room / Time: 11am

Party Review Weather
PARTY GIRL SUN DANCE AWESOME as usual! I did like the fact that workshops continued even after the official time and they involved other easa members besides from their own participants. That’s a good sign, let the trend continue! Thanks to BURN workshop now we have a marked spot for non-official events! In general there were no easa participants who had any doubt about the workshops they picked. Everyone I talked to in the evening (and believe me I’m such a chatterbox so I talked to MANY people) were pleased with the things that they were doing at the workshops and they looked forward to the next day. The atmosphere of enthusiasm rules! As for the music, JESSE were in the house banging electro drums and the crowd were really lost in a trance. Some people tried to create strobe lights with their Smartphones. Afterwards, the moustachioed DJ impressed me a lot. Classic hits created the atmosphere of joy and happiness in easa. ( EASAians started making themselves at home by creating different spots of getting together) This night a lot of people climbed up the mini bus and have a creative party there! Nice choice! I hope to join you next time which is going to be….TODAY! looking forward to have a good time in your car nest))))
The rain decided to stop today so that everybody could get on with their workshops in peace. Maybe the sun-dance performed by the BURN workshop last night has worked its magic. It has been very changeable weather but overall not too bad. EASA008 in Ireland still holds the record for most rain. But watch out for National Evening Lightning - the Gods want to crash the party!

WASTED VALLETTA A talk by Maltese architect Chris Briffa about his current on Valletta (Malta)
Lecture tonight Survival skills
Architect and EASA ex-organiser Chris Briffa (Malta) will be lecturing tonight at 8:00 PM in the bar. In Malta, his work is focused on architectural and interior design projects, but his office has often also worked on product design, urban planning, conceptual work and exhibitions. One particular exhibition involved rebuilding his entire office as a see-through structure within a local museum and spending the month working under the public eye. His presentation will focus on two past EASAs; namely EASA ’97, and EASA ’98 (Malta) and he will conclude with a number of his own projects in Malta that fit within the Wastelands theme.

TALLINN TRIP 100 EASAIANS have booked a trip to Tallinn on Sunday! It is going to be a CRAZY morning of terrible hangovers after national evening but it’s too late to back out now if you have already paid. The tickets have been bought already. So you better get prepared now! Besides, its going to be a wonderful trip to a beautiful mediaeval Hanseatic city - and its much cheaper than Helsinki! First thing and the most important thing: PASSPORT - don’t forget it! You need it to enter the boat. Next most important thing is SET YOU ALARM because if you don’t make it to the Länsisatama terminal by 10am you will miss the ferry. It’s quite a long walk from the end of the tram line so leave plenty of time to get there. Everybody is meeting outside INFOPOINT at 9AM on Sunday to go together. So if you are worried that your brain will be too fuzzy to find your way, you should make sure to be there at 9AM showered, breakfasted and with a packed lunch.

When you arrive, there will be some walking tours and bus tours so stick together. If you get lost you should make sure to find the place for eating called F-HOONE which is near the railway station on Telliskivi 60a. (Write it down somewhere) After dinner at 10.30pm you will meet there again to take the ferry back to Helsinki. Don’t miss the ferry home, deadline to be on the ferry is 12 midnight. I’m sure most people will just want to sleep at that stage so there are 50 rooms with REAL BEDS! You can sleep until the ferry arrives at around 7am. Safe journey!
