EASA TATTOO

Last year’s CRAZE was to have your head shaved asymmetrically but things have stepped up a gear this time with PERMANENT tattoos! There were a lot of people crowding around tattoo artist ‘The Horse’ to see a live tattoo in progress but it seems the people who signed up had pre-meditated their tattoo designs so there were no wastelands logos or spontaneous sketches marked out. One girl overstepped her participant printing privileges to produce a revolver from the photocopier and proceeded to the bar for permanization. Others got small phrases or dots tattooed on their arms. For anyone who is thinking about getting some permanent ink, I would recommend sketching something out with a black marker first to get used to the idea. Maybe this national evening will have a temporary tattoo fashion and whoever falls in love with the design can keep it forever.

PARTY GIRL

Oh these parties make me go crazy about easa spirit. The beginning of the evening started a bit slowly and sluggishly but then when everyone warmed themselves with a few sips of alcohol and when the music turned to be more clubbish everyone got infected by the spirit of the unique community of EASA! People chatting and sharing their thoughts ideas their pieces of souls.. Isn’t that MARVELLOUS)))) And at one moment this warm atmosphere started turning to the HOT one)) Girls and boys who had been experiencing the lack of sun and warmth for the last several days finally got the warmth.. the warmth of the bodies of each other! I noticed that the number of couples who were in agony of dirty dances was increasing from day to day) People had been starving for the summer (real summer not finnish one) for too long so they actually found some ways to warm each other) if you know what I mean) Unfortunately the bar party stops at 2 a.m but we wouldn’t be EASAians if we just agreed with that so at the moment bar was closed we immediately found a solution – AFTERPARTY! Which were held in front of the entrance to ITlab. DJ Andraž Lečnik made that “ dancefloor” vibrate and all the people who were there lose their voice) Fortunately we still have voice – voice of Umbrella) So feel free to share your stories) you know where to find me)

SWINGLAND

On Monday our bar lectures started.

And the 1st speaker was young and perspective Finnish architect – Janne Saario. He specializes in design of skateboard parks and this specialization comes from his former career of professional skateboarder. Janne used to take part in different championships, make skateboard videos and led a life of an extreme sportsman so he knows exactly what kind of skatepark is wanted)

Have you noticed that that there is very little grass at the area? And while searching for upper garden I found Swinglanders! They were trying their new swings which were suspended to the stairs leading to the upper garden. Guys have been to recycling site in order to find new material for new kinds of swings.

They have already improved our campus. Because you know it was THEM who provide us with these things for hanging out in the dormitory and bar areas) Thanks guys! But that’s not the end of their contribution to the atmosphere in campus. They are planning to use trees in the upper garden for the swings and make this area an alternative place for communication. But communication can be different, you know, so they also decided to revive an old and a good idea – LOVE BOX is coming back guys! The place is not confirmed yet but the middle of the dormitory seems empty right now) I guess you got the hint ;) And also Swinglanders are preparing some kind of surprise for us) I tried to get any kind of info for you. But surprise should stay as a surprise!

The best variant according to Janne is when the commission comes from the skateboard communities and state supports this initiative with money.

He has already designed 3 skateparks and 5 commissions are coming.

During the final party of EASA the skateboard event is going to be held at the skatepark which is being built by the Easa participants at Concrete workshop which is under the leadership of Janne.

On the very first day guys draw the sketch! And now they are in a process of realization it) They are adding a ramp and an obstacle made by their own hands to the existing skatepark but as the designers were hungry easians they stipulated the barbeque area from the back side of the ramp) I do hope the weather will not become the obstacle for them!

EASA KITCHEN If you get a little peckish before dinner you can use your tokens to buy some tasty treats from these guys beside the steps. Everyday they take the money from their previous day’s sales and go to local markets to find typical Finnish foods and create recipes infused with a little bit of flair from each of the participants own cuisine. Sometimes they even go foraging for nuts and berries in the forest - they also have the intention of recycling food waste from supermarkets. It is their holistic approach to the culture of food and it’s origins that sets them apart from the new york ninja chefs. Also the face that they are making dessert too! If you need any advice about how to prepare your national evening dishes tomorrow, you can approach them today.

BRANDING INK

Led by EASA.TV veteran Alex Maxwell, this workshop is aiming to produce a feature film capturing the story of EASA. They are using NOKIA phones to capture events from every angle as well as digital SLRs for interviews and lectures. They will spend the first week finding their feet and getting experimental footage. They have started to learn how to use the video editing software in the last couple of days and will be filming heavily from monday to produce a completed feature by the end of next week. If you come across Alex and his prosthetic stabilising equipment, try to act natural and put on a good show, you might make it onto the TV someday.

If you are a tutor and you want some of your video footage to appear in the final product, Alex and his team will be in the IT lab editing towards the end of next week.

It is clear that these guys are not happy with the art-in-architecture situation that is present around us today.

Their aim is to try and make us think more about what to produce for the environment around us – they want us to THINK ART. This workshop arose from the fact that whenever we decide on something, it seems like we ignore the unique characteristics of the space and hence there is no connection to place. So when it comes to art works in public spaces, these become anonymous to the people and to the place they are found in.

Michal (tutor) explained how a lot of the sculptures found in public spaces are weak, creating and enhancing no emotion in the user. The participants were pushed to adopt a holistic approach and include all the factors present – art, the wasteland theme and the fact that we are in Helsinki.

The workshop has undergone a series of observations, from which ideas, which could eventually become tangible designs, were developed. The emphasis here is on SPACE and FORM, and applying this around Helsinki.

The participants are working in 3 groups so as eventually to produce 3 installations to be displayed in the city.

When buying some stuff, what goes through your mind? Why does your hand go toward one product but not the other one. Atmosphere is the answer, said Javier Guerra Gomez one of the tutors of Branding ink workshop. That’s what participants try to feel in some wasteland object. For example, inspired by crooked nails, one of the participants David tried to reproduce the emotion, mood and the atmosphere that this object possesses in an image. Then its going to be printed on different stuff like T-shirt, paper, bags e t c. The technique that guys use in their workshop is complicated to explain but I’ll try to make it simple. They put different prints on the surface with the help of stencils and this is how they create multiple layer images which become unique at the moment the ink is washed off from the screen. I don’t know about you guys but I really want to get one for myself. So when I ask Javier of their plans for the stuff to be ready at the end of easa, he couldn’t say for sure, probably they won’t sell them but I saw! the doubt in his eyes ;)

NIGHT SHIFT BLATHMHAC There is a pink rubber glove, bended over an edge. The glove is clean; there is no dust on it. The edge is grey and hard. It is an edge of a radiator – not hot enough to melt the glove. There are two pipes leaving the radiator. Between the pipes and the radiator there is a connector piece, unpainted metal. The pipes are painted white. One starts from the top and the other from the bottom of the radiator.

“Hey.” The pipe connected to the connector piece connected to the radiator on top of which lays the glove connected at the bottom of the radiator is horizontal before turning vertical. The other pipe turns vertical almost immediately.

“You wanna see my wristband?”

The bottom pipe takes six turns and the pipe on top takes five turns before ending in to the wall, white.

“What time does your duty end?”

Seven doors lead out of the room.

Three of them are closed. The open doors are all the same: grey, medium width, brass handles. The closed doors are all different from each other and from the three open doors.

“Do you think it’s okay if we have the sauna now?”

The door leading outside is slightly ajar. Air inside is replaced with colder air from outside. The radiator on top of which there is the pink rubber glove is not on.

Explosions rumble in the background, chimneys belching grey pumes into the heavens as I wander, shielding myself against the rain. Wastelands crumbling edifices, the faded memories of a glorious industrial past, stand idle. Hallowed shells, former temples of power, now bleached concrete hulks and decaying, speckled brick.

This is it, five hundred souls, huddled on a sea of tar, wind howling across this man-made moonscape. There is life here yet though - lift a piece of driftwood as you ramble on the beach and what will you find. Go in search of solitude here in this expanse and your search will be in vain. Every inch of land - behind the shed, within the shed, above the shed, around the shed - everywhere on the staircases, in the halls, in the kitchens, hovering above the thresholds - this land of waste has been renewed. A pile of leaves, fallen from the tree, abondoned, unwanted, returns to soil. From the waste the flowers grow, as we from EASA shuffle to and fro.

KONE PARTY

As part of the ‘Uplifting Landings’ workshop sponsored by KONE, There will be an opening party in the old NOKIA factory this evening at 6pm.

Dinner will be served a little earlier than usual at 4pm so we can all go down there together. Get your party clothes on because we will continue the party downtown tonight. To get there you need to bring your travelcard and take the number 8 tram to Kaapeli

If you find graffiti intriguing, you could be one of the lucky few to have a go at it this year. Andrej (RS) who goes under the name of ARTEZ will be holding a one-day workshop where those applying will get the chance to experiment with spray paint and colour and have their work permanently exhibited in Helsinki.

When: Monday 23 rd July Time: Morning meeting at 10:00 to discuss designs then work starts at 20:00 How: Apply at INFO POINT till Monday Fee: 10 euro (for spray paint)
