EASA SONG 2012?? What is a EASA song? Well maybe you wil not realise now but as soon as EASA is finished you will realise that there is 1 special song that reminds you of a particular EASA. Not every year has a song, but arguableby some of the best years have had songs.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS EASA?

Looking at a recent history of EASA songs reveals this: - CADIZ: Hello, by Martin Solveig - MANCHESTER: Boom de EASA boom de EASA??? No clear song. - ITALY: What is love, by Haddaway - IRELAND: Kids, by MGMT - GREECE:No clear song. - BUDAPEST: We are your friends, by Justice So seeing as there was no defined song for the last couple of years one would hope that this years EASA radio will take the helm and guide us listeners to make a good choice. Keep in mind the EASA song does not have to be recent, relevent or even “cool”

1. Brian - Ireland Really really great. Really. I mean really great!

2. Andras - Hungary I like it. It’s great and as far as my workshop has been cancelled it’s even better now

3. Matthias - Ausrtia It’s great except these strict Finnish regulations especially at the parties. At least we have really nice after-parties

4. Andraz - Slovenia It’s different. Food is really tasty) BUT we miss organizers at the parties!

5. Franziska - Liechtenstein It sucks as every year

6. Cecily - Ireland Where is the fruit?

7. Christian - Austria I enjoy it. It’s different from the previous one but that’s a good thing. It has to be so

8. Shura- Belarus I got used to the atmosphere really fast cause in my country I live next to industrial district . But it seems to me when I come back I’ll have to sleep on the floor in order to adapt to my old conditions

We need your suggestions to be given to EASA FM, and hopefully they can even put together a short playlist to help everyone decide. Cecily Quetin-Weeks

GOSSIP COLUMN Thanks to National Evenings we have to diseases; FLU and LOVE Borders in EASA don’t exist any more France became close to Ukraine. Ireland now got familiar with Romania and girl with an easy name misses Irish guy in parties.

EASA 2013 -> SLOVENIA

Well as most of you probably do know by now, EASA 2013 will be hosted by Slovenia. Here is a short insight of what to expect next year. FIRST TIME ON HOME SOIL The idea goes back into May 2010 after finishing a very successful Architectual Students Congress – ASK 2010 Ljubljana. The super-motivated team a.k.a. ''ask-ovci'' decided to go for it, organize the biggest architectural studentsrun event in Europe. A seven-member group managed to get the project at the bidding during INCM 2011 in Baku and thus, after several smaller events, finally and officially brought the EASA summer event to Slovenia. Project EASA 2013 Slovenia was an idea brought to life which will be ongoing during the next year with the highlight in August 2013 – the summer assembly. The main event will take place in a small town in Suha krajina (Dry valley) called Žužemberk. It will consist of studying the town's potential and possibilities to unleash it. The reaction has already started with the revitalization of the castle walls and as the dominoes are falling, we can be a big part in the process of directing it the right way. REGIONAL POSSIBILITIES Potential and development – both extremely important for a city or a town, but without a clear vision often a deadly combination that can result in bad realizations. Sadly, we sometimes forget to care enough about the space that is sorrounding us, even though preservation should always be our main priority. Revival of public spaces is a result of thoughtful and clever organization, smart interventions and a clear picture. Our location are specifics of the public space – the square, castle sorroundings, courtyard and the castle itself, which is the center of the town on a cliff facing the Krka river valley. The ordinary placement of a castle on a hill overseeing the town was not possible here because of geography, but is at the same time very thoughtful, as the whole town is sitauted on a hill. The castle is by definition then, a vital part of the town, at first acting as a refuge during the invasions, later as a man-

sion for important families and in the recent years as a monument. The reward for the condition the building is in at the moment goes exclusively to a group of people fighting for its revival in the last 10 years. Their success can be seen in many events the castle itself hosts. Reconstruction of the building and its surroundings is very important not just for the town but the region as well. What kind of program is most suitable for a monument like this? What transformations should and should not be done to the structure? What is the future of Žužemberk? We think that EASA was established to ask these questions and study the answers through workshops, discussions, activities, lectures and most of all creativity brought by 500 most active and daring students of architecture from all over Europe.

FROM THE PEOPLE, TO THE PEOPLE Based on the theme there are three main frames within which the tutors will be able to form their proposals. The frames follow the existing division of the workshops into practical, compound and theoretical. SITE OPPORTUNITIES Part concerning the project planning is reduced to the minimum during the assembly, as this group of workshops deals with structural problems on site during the construction of the installation / pavilion / structure. In case of Žužemberk there are lots of pos-

sibilities of focusing on specific parts of the town, for example the square, river bank or hill slopes under the castle, as well as the castle itself. One of these group workshops will be ´the competition´, which will be basically an international call for proposals concerning an issue where both the organizers and the municipality feel like it is important to solve. There are several ideas being discussed. Exact details will be announced till INCM in Vienna.

for the following 10-50 years. WELCOME! As someone from the organizing team, that thinks he rules the team, told in the interview during the national evening, there will be no limitations. It´ll be HOT, unless the Dry valley tries to ruin its reputation. We´ll be able to cool the atmosphere down in the river under the castle and later warm it up in the secret chambers. Be very welcome! CRAFTSMAN WORK This second group is a fusion of practical and theoretical workshops. In Žužemberk it will mostly be oriented to the local crafts that shaped the region throughout the history and are now mostly forgotten. The main purpose is to involve the community to the summer assembly and learn from the locals. BREAKING POINT There are infinite possibilities of developing a place with as big a potential as our location has. Theoretical workshops are meant to blow your mind on the posibilities the location offers. Students can study it and propose different scenarions

For those of you who might have never heard of an INCM, this gathering is basically a mini EASA, where around 100 NCs from all the different countries meet up to discuss the many issues that concern EASA and most importantly to decide which country will be hosting EASA in 2 years’ time and also the next INCM. This year, INCM will be held in Vienna from the 26/10 till 2/11, with an optional trip to Bratislava till the 4/11. The location chosen for this event is central Vienna, with a lot of different locations around Vienna which will be used for all the different activities, namely discussions, presentations, lectures, bids and the parties. The idea behind this is to showcase the great variety of Viennese spots in particular when it comes to night culture. This is primarily because the theme is NIGHT. At first, it doesn’t sound really related to architecture however it is still somehow relevant. The focus will be on the night and how this time of the day affects the image of the city, how the night changes the behavior and the atmosphere in a city. Connecting this to EASA, the organizers wish to discuss issues about EASA and night time. Their main concern is that it seems that nights at every EASA are treated as leftovers. The day is planned in detail while the night is left unthought-of. A home page should be set up soon which will definitely keep you updated on all that’s happening.

WASTELANDS

[WRITING IS BUILDING]

[MICHAEL HAYES]

Take the number 6 tram. It stops right outside the central train station. Try not to stare at the resident alcoholics. Find a seat, or stand if you prefer. But watch for the corners. It’s not a long ride so keep an eye. The name of the stop is something Finnish. Don’t worry about it, just wait for the Lidl to sail into view. Now head in that direction. If you find yourself at the bridge, you’ve gone the wrong way. Turn around and this time go left down the hill. There’s a pizza place on the way. Take note. Stop at the dangerous road. Wait for the green man. Mind the cyclists here; road works have cordoned their lane and they’re in no mood to share. Have a look up and then across. It’s fairly vast. Start walking. Get used to it. Wander (or should that be wonder?) A city in miniature, it feels a lot bigger than it is. Visit a block. Ignore the function. Make it to the back until you forget about the others. Then leave. Repeat. Swim around a bit. Find the middle. Find the edge and then turn back again. But bring a brolly. Portable shelter is a great comfort. Enjoy. Saunter, but don’t get too cocky. This end of town will look completely different next week. This is only here as long as you are. This is the best place to be right now. This is Wastelands.

DISCUSS! The Three Little Pigs invite you yet again to join them for another discussion at the bar at 5:oopm. Free coffee for all those who attend! Today's discussion -

easa 2014 the 12 steps

EASA 2014 ? BURNT PIZZA I was only eavesdropping at the bar, but sounds like Chris Maloney (uk) wants another stab at achieving the perfect easa. "We were so close, if it wasn't for the fuck!n' p*lice helicopter". Not ready to move on to a 'proper' adult job yet, and with a threat of the Scottish bidding to hold the INCM in a crack den in Glasgow, Chris seemed to have found the solution to the UK's notoriously stringent policing on National Evenings. "There's an island out east that that is only accessible by boat, so if we steal that we'll be fine." The island, Orfordness, was once a secret military bomb test site, and the deep bunkers still remain. These would be perfect for our cultural exchange parties and 400 passed out architecture students. The site also comes with a long range radio beacon, used during the second and cold wars, and later by the BBC. "Easa FM could be broadcast live to all of Continental Europe, for everyone you can't make it to the island" Chris concluded, before downing his third gin and tonic and walking off for a breakfast meeting with his sponsors. Easa kitchen and Burn! workshop combined yesterday to offer free calzones too anyone who made the trek to the sandlot at the end of the harbour. There they had built a masonry pizza oven that looked like a mini-hobbits house and over the course of 3 hours had many visitors who had been whetting their appetite watching the neading of the dough all morning. The result was a large fistful of pizza with a fiery taste. Photos by Baris Enselioglu

ROLLER DERBY Pink Spanker! What a girl! She ran rings around the black team, jabbing and hustling her way through a big pack of blockers with names like TBag and Macho Bitchu. There were about 6 referees for this melee of feminine muscle and the bone-crunching falls didn't disappoint the crowd. The girls came together for an exhibition match at the invitation of Pekka who knows one of them personally 'The deal was they could train here while we're in charge and in exchange we get to watch a match and the winning team will flash their boobs'. There were no boobs at the end but EASAians showed their appreciation by lining the ring during the lap of honour giving high-fives.

THE 12

STEPS

1. Anticipation - I signed up for YAZA! I've heard so much about it - I can't wait 2. Trepidation - What am I getting myself in for? What the hell is national evening? - Why do I need to bring a bowl? Sleeping on the floor for 2 weeks?? 3. Awesomeness - Wow, so many weird people. Everybody is hugging eachother. This is crazy, its like a refugee camp. Those workshops sound amazing. I feel alive! 4. Enthusiasm - Yea! I wanna build a big pavilion, become a famous street artist, invent a sustainable modular system of architecture and use it for my thesis. 5. First Hangover - Ugh, Can I go back to bed? We have 2 weeks to make this happen. 6. Experiment - So cool! I never thought I would be doing something like this 7. Setback - Our materials haven't arrived so I'm just hanging around doing nothing... so bored, it feels like i've been here forever. When will this hangover end! What's the point? 8. Connection - I met so many interesting people! Everybody is so nice, I'm having so much fun. There's lots of cool stuff happening all around me, I feel like I belong here. love! 9. Panic - Shit! It's almost over and we have nothing to show for it. Let's get busy! 10. Production - Concentrating really hard to get stuff done 11. Unity - We are your friends!
