ELEMENTARY ACTIVITIES & ATHLETICS


Registration Process & Policies – PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY • After-school program will be available online on August 10, 2016. • Online registration for First choice class opens August 15 at 10 a.m. • Online registration for additional classes starts at 12:00 am on August 17 (during the overnight hours from August 16-17), until August 28, provided there are spaces available in the selected classes. • Minimum and maximum student enrollments are listed with each class description. • Grades K-2 may register for up to an additional 3 classes. Grades 3-5 may register for up to an additional 4 classes. • Registrations received on August 24 onwards will be subjected to a $15.00 late fee. • Late registrations will not be accepted after August 28, 2016. • The preferred method of payment is via the EAA’s cashless PayPal on-line registration system. In special circumstances, payment may be made by check at the EAA office, however, cash payment is greatly discouraged. • There will be no refunds after you have paid and registered your child in a class (once you have received the receipt from PayPal). • There will be no switches (transfers to a different after-school class) after your registration is confirmed (once you have received the receipt from PayPal). • After registration is completed, parents can access the “registered activities” link on the after-school registration system to view receipts and registration confirmation.

General Information when After-school classes start: • All children must report to the K-2 or 3-5 cafeteria directly after school at 3 pm. • Cafeteria supervision is provided until 3:15 when the after-school classes begin. • Grades K-2 students must be picked up by an adult at 4:15 pm or ride the 4:25 pm K-2 AfterSchool Bus Service (Registration and payment is made online during the EAA registration process.). By special request, Grades K-2 students who live in the Woodlands area will be permitted to walk home with written parental permission. Parental permission should be submitted via email at eaainfo@sas.edu.sg • On occasions when parents wish to pick-up their children instead of having them ride the 4:25 pm K-2 After-School Bus Service, they must collect their children from the bus line in front of the Kindergarten grouproom. • Grades 3-5 students may walk home, be picked up from the ES foyer by the Nurse’s office, or ride a 4:25 pm Activity Bus (Parents must contact the Bus Office @ 6360-6770 to arrange for the Activity Bus) after confirmed enrollment in an after-school class.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORTS 9U Soccer Representative Team (BOYS) - 3rd/4th grade* This team will represent SAS in the ACSIS league for Season 1 of the 2016-2017 school year. There are no tryouts for this team. Participation will be on a first come, first served basis. Registration for this team will take place at the same time as other EAA activities this year. Recreation Activities Kinder Soccer Skills - KG The Coerver® First Skills soccer training program is for children aged between 4-6. Fun is the cornerstone of the curriculum with an introduction to basic skills and a positive experience in the game featuring individual and team contests and small sided games. The atmosphere is energetic and joyful as we encourage all soccer players to learn to love the game.

Recreation Activities Fun Fundamentals – KG This class will explore a combination of fundamental movement skills perfect to develop young minds and bodies. These include loco-motor, gross-motor, fine-motor skills, upper body strength, hand-eye coordination along with working on both dynamic and static balance. These exercises will be delivered in a fun and engaging way so that students are enjoying themselves while learning to move their growing bodies. Students will skip, crawl, climb their way through our fun filled room and challenge themselves physically to complete many obstacles.

Cartwheels, handstands and rolls of every kind are just a few of the many skills we will teach. This would involve the use of their own body weight and being able to control it. Strength and flexibility training is included as well as eye-hand and eye-foot coordination while having as much fun as possible within the hour session.

Yoga for Children - 1st/2nd grade Yoga for young ones requires a lot of energy and a little bit of imagination. Rather than focusing on precise poses and long sequences, children develop a love of yoga by practicing asana-s in stories, games, and short sequences. In addition to strength, balance, and flexibility, a foundation for mindfulness is created. Relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and visualization will help your young ones develop along the path of yoga. Former SAS teacher Laura Fitzpatrick, now works independently as a registered yoga teacher developing yoga practices for individuals and small groups based on student needs.

Recreation Activities Basketball Skills – 1st/2nd grade Introducing a high energy, continuous movement basketball skills course. Students will be encouraged to have fun with various dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive games. Our challenge and emphasis will be on pushing ourselves towards personal improvement in this popular and exciting team sport.

Game Busters! - 1st/2nd grade In this EAA class we will focus on games and activities that get students moving and actively engaged! We will play cooperative games, tag games, and invasion games while incorporating sportsmanship and teamwork. Students will learn important game strategies that will help them develop fundamental motor skills that they can use to play major sports in the future. The ultimate goal of this class is to build each child’s ‘athletic confidence’. Come join the fun!!”

Recreation Activities Cricket Skills - 3rd/4th/5th grade Cricket Skills gives upper elementary children the opportunity to play cricket. They will learn and work on fundamental cricket skills, and be active in a fun environment. With the emphasis on fun, children will get a safe introduction to cricket, develop lots of basic bowling, batting and fielding skills.

Students will also learn competitive game strategies and team building skills that will help them in most competitive sports in the future. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Badminton - 3rd/4th/5th grade Learn how to play this exciting and challenging Olympic sport. Students will learn badminton skills and drills while playing a variety of games, which includes individual, doubles and team based activities and challenges. Come and join the fun with this popular sport in Singapore and Asia.

Recreation Activities Coerver® Goalkeeping Essentials – 3rd/4th/5th The Coerver® Goalkeeping Essentials program is specifically designed to work with young goalkeepers to improve key elements of good goalkeeping. This program will help keepers read the game better, improve mobility & faster footwork (forward, sideward & backward), show the proper way to receive ground balls & balls above the waist, get safer hands (the proper way to secure the ball), adjusting to shots from different angles as well as providing more confidence when coming off the line. The sessions are not only fun but are designed to give keepers the right technique and a strong foundation for them to succeed as goalkeepers.

Dodgeball - 4th/5th grade Come join us in this fast paced, fun filled, competitive game that is popular with students everywhere! Emphasis will be on developing throwing and catching skills, then using these skills in a number of versions of dodge ball.

Futsal (indoor soccer) - 4th/5th grade Are you ready to play some Futsal? Futsal is widely viewed as the ideal skill-building sport for producing technically exciting soccer players. It is a low contact indoor sport, fast-paced and the kids can play it rain or shine. With particular emphasis on the skills of passing, dribbling, close control & shooting.

Recreation Activities Girls Touch Rugby Skills - 4th/5th grade Touch rugby is a fast moving, minimal contact, evasive game that is played throughout the world by boys and girls. The game is similar to rugby but without tackling, scrumming, mauling, lineouts and kicking. This fast, simple and exciting game promotes the fundamentals skills of running, handling, evasion and support play, whilst developing basic principles of attack and defense. It is a great social game too! SAS offers a Touch (girls) rep Team program for 4th and 5th graders during Season 3. So, get a head start and learn to play now!

Boys Rugby Skills - 4th/5th grade Rugby is a very popular sport worldwide! Our beginner’s rugby program has the goal to develop your child’s physical and social skills, as well as encourage rugby specific skills such as safe and effective tackle techniques, perfect ball presentation, running, safe and effective body position when taking the ball, kicking, catching, scoring a try, and most importantly teamwork. You can be selected to represent SAS during Season 3 in our Under 11 team. So, get a head start and learn to play now!

Yoga - 5th grade Yoga and fifth grade go together perfectly. Growing bodies and expanding minds gain strength and flexibility with a fun weekly yoga practice. Boys and girls alike will love the confidence and tranquility that results from asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing) and meditation. Fifth graders will gain skills to become more in charge of their bodies and minds. These wellness practices will transfer to school, sports, relationships, and in their home life. Former SAS teacher Laura Fitzpatrick, now works independently as a registered yoga teacher developing yoga practices for individuals and small groups based on student needs.

Martial Arts Karate – KG/1st/2nd grade Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art, which teaches students how to use hands, elbows, knees and legs to become weapons. It teaches children good discipline, healthy lifestyle, good morals and also helps them to make new friends. This class aims to build a solid foundation for children to understand and enjoy Karate. For those of you that don’t know, that’s Betty Bruiser and her awful son’s Buster and Blackeye. They’ve never done an honest days work in their lives; the only trade they know is “burglary” and “bullying”, that is until they come up against the ever vigilant Mr. Plod the Policeman. Christmas is just around the corner and Mr. Plod has been out and about warning the local townsfolk to lock up tight as the Bruisers are on the prowl. He’s had a special word with Fran and Fritz, the local Toymakers, as their toys are VERY special and highly sought after. Irish Dance Beginners – KG to 5th grade (Admission to this popular Beginner programme is only in Term 1, not possible to start later in the year*). Come along and have fun learning Irish Dancing! In this beginner class, you will first learn a reel, and progress through to the light jig and hop jig dances. In some classes, we also work on specific skills to sharpen up your steps. Most dancers are able to perform on stage towards the end of the first year. Dancers can progress onto higher levels, which include learning choreographed group dances and hard shoe dancing. As dancers progress, there are many opportunities to perform at both school and public events. The Irish Dancing teacher is Sharon Pawley (Hedigan) who danced competitively in the UK and Ireland for 15 years, and has taught in Singapore since 2005.

Arts & Crafts Great Masters – 1st/2nd grade In this art class we are going to paint, draw, use clay, create collage work, make sculptures and really have fun exploring art! Santa’s Workshop – 1st/2nd grade Students will have a chance to get into the Christmas spirit early as they become Santa’s elves making a variety of festive objects for the holiday season. Fire, Clay and Fun – 3rd/4th/5th grade We will work in the High School Visual Arts Suite with variety of clay to create jewelry, bowls, ornaments and many other items using stoneware, earthenware and porcelain. These spectacular creations will be finished off using paint, glazes and a special firing process called Raku. This process involves firing clay in our cool Raku kiln with fire and smoke and a fabulous finish.

Mind Stretch Fun with Cooking – 4th/5th grade Kids have the chance to cook many different simple, healthy recipes during a season. The class will be totally hands-on, with students doing the preparing, cooking and cleaning up. Parents are welcome to join the class as helpers. Students will go home with a sample of what they made during the class. Students with food allergies are not encouraged to sign up for the class.

Mad Scientists – 4th/5th grade For all science enthusiasts out there! This course is a perfect opportunity for your child to make science come alive with fun experiments and activities. This class is sponsored by SAS’ High School Science National Honor Society students. This course will provide a fun overview study of a variety of scientific subjects (Physics, Biology, Genetics, and Chemistry) with many hands-on scientific experiments supervised by our Middle School Science Teacher, Mr. Chassagne.

Photography – 4th/5th grade Are you interested in learning about photography and what makes a great picture? In this class, we are going to explore elements of photography such as types of photography, how to set up a picture, and learn about some of the features found on a camera. You don’t even need to have your own camera since we learn using school-issued ipads; all you need is a creative mind.

Music Keyboard Lessons – KG Students in this programme will learn to play songs on the keyboard (piano) with both hands through musical games and engaging activities. This specially designed keyboard programme uses the computer to enhance the learning experience for children and motivate them to play more music. It is suitable for beginner students and is a pressure-free keyboard group class. It develops a strong musical foundation through listening, singing, playing, moving, creating, and reading.

Piano for Beginners – 1st/2nd grade Students will learn piano from square one. Each student will have his or her own keyboard with headphones on which to practice. During Piano for Beginners, students will be working on mastering the following skills: playing high and low sounds, using right and left hands separately and together, playing keys with the appropriate finger number, and finding groups of black keys and middle C. Students will also learn basic rhythms and music notation, as well as beginning improvisation. Students who have already had a keyboarding unit in their music class but do not yet take lessons, will also be able to advance the skills they learned in class. Lessons will include group and individual practice.

Music Choir – 3rd/4th/5th grade Come and join the new upper elementary choir! No experience necessary, just a passion and enthusiasm for singing! This choir aims to develop the children’s skills in the following areas: vocal and breathing technique, ensemble work, performance, musical appreciation, artistic expression and style, movement, and stage presence. It further aims to develop responsibility, self-confidence, and a love for singing. On the last session, we will conclude with an informal performance for families.

Guitar for Beginners – 4th/5th grade Students will learn to play guitar from square one. They will learn about posture, handpositioning and get familiar with various parts of the instrument. Using the guitar chords - G major, C major, E minor and D major - students will begin ‘jamming’ as soon as possible. We will work on finger and scale exercises, strumming and other practice techniques and in no time they will start playing simple 3 chord songs. Students will also learn basic guitar tuning and the notes of the musical staff. All students will need to bring a NYLON STRING CLASSICALSTYLE guitar to the class. This guitar can be purchased at many music stores around the city.

Computer and Technology Little Engineers – KG Looking for a creative and fun activity designed for your inquisitive Kindergartener? The Little Engineers does just that! This class introduces children to simple machinery through fun activities. Kids will learn about simple concepts of how machines work through demonstration, stories and simple play experiments. They will be manipulating and constructing with LEGO® and be amazed by the mechanics of how different parts come together to make an awesome machine. This class is an excellent hands-on activity for your child to explore simple machine concepts.

Jr. Engineers – 1st/2nd grade

(Not suitable to returning Jr. Engineers) Join us as a Junior Engineer this term to learn more about what LEGO® has to offer. In this class students will have fun learning science and mechanical concepts through hands on building with LEGO®. Kids will have an understanding of fundamental mechanical concepts and their day to day applications through an enjoyable “learn whilst playing” experience. They will explore and investigate topics such as gear trains and different classes of levers as they construct a variety of complex LEGO® mechanisms. The instructors will then help students translate and apply their learning with real life examples.

Minecraft – 1st/2nd grade Build an ancient civilization structure and defend them from invaders in Minecraft! Learn more about ancient civilizations as you play. Minecraft is more than just a game; it’s a tool that can be used to enrich students’ learning. Minecraft can be used to teach history, physics, engineering, and programming and lots more. It is an interactive game that allows players to use digital blocks to create almost anything they can imagine. We will also be incorporating the use of Lego bricks to build structures. The use of Lego bricks helps to enhance the students’ learning in design, mechanics and engineering.

Scratch® Coders – 3rd/4th grade Learn to code with Scratch® and create your own games and animations easily in a short time. Create shooting games or two player games. Computer and Technology Girls Coding Club – 3rd/4th/5th grade Are you a girl who has wondered about how things work? Maybe you wanted to program a robot or create your very own game or app? If any of these things describe you, then Girls Coding Club is where you want to be! At the start of this class, girls will be exposed to blockly-based programming activities. From there, they will have the opportunity to create anything they can imagine. With women representing only 20 percent of the current computer programmers in the world, it’s important to start “changing the game.”

Girls Robotics Club – 3rd/4th/5th grade It’s a race against time for the different robot teams to return to the future and stop the monster robots from coming into the present time. They have to be the first to get to the time capsule before the evil robots destroy it. Can your team help to build and program the fastest robot and get to the time capsule in time? Students will work together to complete different missions as they learn about teamwork, simple robot programming and understanding the mechanics of the robot. Find out how you can make your robot react to different situations using sensors. EAA season one and two robotics students (4th/5th grade only) will be invited to represent SAS during season three at a robotics competition. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

Ninja Game Coders – 4th/5th grade Learn to code your own arcade style web games fast and easily! Create your own space shooting game or a platform game for yourself and your friends. In this course, students will be taught the basics of game creation, using a simple and intuitive game creation engine. Students will learn basic coding and animation in a colorful and interactive environment and the results of their work will be seen almost immediately. During the coding and creation process, students will apply math and science skills. They will also have a chance to publish their arcade games on the internet!

Computer and Technology Animation – 4th/5th grade Join the ranks of Disney animators to produce the likes of “Shaun the Sheep” or “Wallace and Gromit” type movies. Stop-motion animation has a long history in Hollywood, and this course will help you create your own short stop-motion films and digital story telling. Participants are shown how to plan and shoot sequences with an iPad, then assemble them into a short animated movie using editing softwares and the iStopMotion app. Learn practical techniques from our experienced instructors to create Movie Magic!

Robotics – 4th/5th grade Explore the wonders of science and technology through robotics. Learn to build and program different types of robots that help mankind. Build your dream robot and participate in various challenges. We use Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics sets and each session is engaging and fun while accomplishing its learning objectives. Experienced robotics trainers, who are passionate about robotics and enjoy working with young children, conduct our EAA classes. All EAA season one and two robotics students will be invited to represent SAS at a robotics competition during season three. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity!

Movie Makers – 4th/5th grade Is your child a creative movie maker? In this class, students will be encouraged to let their film making creativity flow! Students will be inspired to shoot their own live action and stop motion films. They will be taught video creation strategies and will be introduced to editing and video creation apps. Students will learn a variety of basic video capturing techniques that will help them develop their own movie ideas.
