Opened in the late 1960's, Pedras d'el Rei, along with the sister resort Pedras da Rainha in Cabanas were the first resorts of their kind. Since opening they have had three different family owners, the current being from Lisbon who spend most of the year here and are very present at the resort, taking daily walks around the grounds. Set in 35 hectares (that's 35 rugby pitches, or larger than the average golf course), Pedras d'el Rei has over 900 accommodation units, two-thirds of which are privately owned. The company also owns the train that shuttles beach goers back and forth to Barril beach and also the restaurants on the beach, which are currently rented out. Barril beach was once the location of a small tuna fishing community, and the remnants of this bygone industry have been transformed into the beach's tourist facilities. The most notable feature of the Praia do Barril is the Cemitério das Âncoras (Anchor Cemetery), a rusting memorial to the abandoned fishing community. It has always had a blue flag status and also has the 'Gold quality' award from the environmental association Quercus. At Pedras d'el Rei you'll also find the Restaurant Vale d'el Rei, a Piano bar, Pool bar, Bar Nora, supermarket and news kiosk, which are all open to the public. The stylish Restaurant Vale d'el Rei has a small but beautiful terrace set amid old characterful trees, and a large interior space. The friendly atmosphere is paired with excellent service and international gastronomy, focusing on Portuguese cuisine by chef Armando from Tavira. Pedras d'el Rei is a beautiful place to visit, the restaurant if not already, will undoubtedly become one of your favourites.
