News he Algarve will have the first Genetics Laboratory in the south of the country, where anyone can go directly and have genetic tests for more than 1,000 rare diseases. Genelab by ABC is the first laboratory in the Algarve providing genetic tests for the detection of rare diseases, which contributes to the improvement of medical science and at the same time meets the patients’ needs in the region. This project by the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) is taking shape and will be available to the public in January 2022. Until now, without this service, the Algarve and Alentejo were dependent on other laboratory centres in the country, ending up increasing the pressure on them. This new service will provide more comfort to patients and will ease the pressure of services from other centres across the country. In fact, this laboratory will be prepared to find out more than a thousand genetic and rare diseases in medical specialties, such as cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, neuromuscular diseases, among many others that may be associated with a genetic mutation that can only be discovered through this

high-level technology. Technology to change cancer treatments In addition, this is a great advance in oncology. These tests will ensure a better quality of life for patients, as physicians will be able to decide which sort of treatment is best suited to the pace of disease progression. “In terms of oncology, we can find out if the patient is high risk and then decide whether we should have more aggressive therapy, or if the patient is low risk and we should just wait and see. With this approach, the results for the patient are completely different, not only in terms of survival rate but also in terms of quality of life, as we are not exposing the person to aggressive treatments in cases where we can have better options”, said Dr. Nuno Marques, cardiologist and president of ABC. Open to the public One of the most interesting points of this new laboratory is that they are not only at the service of hospitals but also open to the general population, which means that to carry out these tests you can go directly to the lab and schedule your screening.

“Normally it would not be possible to do this because no one, who is not an expert, can interpret this type of test. However, we will have a team of specialists in the area available to monitor the patients, assess the person and indicate whether or not it is worth requesting the exam”. Otherwise, whoever wants to take these tests would have to first go through an appointment with a hospital specialist. Dr. Nuno Marques highlighted the importance of having a team of specialists, noting that this team will also be available to assist the hospital's doctors who request their help in order to discuss each case in a multidisciplinary way. This new laboratory has the collaboration of the Spanish Group Health in Code, which has "the largest database in the world that makes the relationship between a specific mutation and what can happen to the patient due to it", according to Dr. Nuno Marques. From January 2022, this laboratory will start working at the University of Algarve (Gambelas) “because it is urgently needed to meet the population’s needs”, but in the future, it will move to a new building in Loulé that is currently under construction.

he village Pedras D'el Rei, in Tavira, was presented with the candidacy for its Royal Olive Tree, over 2200 years old, for the European Tree of the Year 2022. The Oliveira Real, planted in Roman times, is part of the gardens of the village Pedras D'el Rei and is one of the main attractions for national and international tourists who choose to stay here for their holidays. The tree, together with the beaches located in the area, witnessed the invasion of the Moors and their expulsion, and also witnessed the foundation of Portugal. "Many centuries have passed, and the Oliveira Real present at the Pedras D’el Rei village has withstood all and continues to enchant those who visit the development", says a

6

village representative in a statement, adding that "with a height of 10.3m and a perimeter of 11m from the trunk, the tree was classified in 1984 as a tree of public interest, and is now nominated to be elected the European Tree of the Year 2022. The vote of all Portuguese being very important to promote one of the

oldest living beings in Portugal". The tree with the most votes will represent Portugal in the Tree of the Year 2022 European competition. Voting is open until January 5th, 2022, with the winning tree being announced on January 6th. The village of Pedras D'el Rei reinforces that respect for nature, and coexistence in harmony with the local environment, is a priority, the preservation of Oliveira Real is a mission." The village is located in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, between Santa Luzia and Tavira. The apartments and houses are set in large green spaces, with the aim of providing a pleasant and safe stay, in a relaxing and familiar environment.

his month we introduce Barry Overn, originally from Calgary in Canada and now a resident of Tavira. A self taught artist, he bought his first air brush at the age of 16 to paint a motorcycle helmet. From there he started producing unique T-shirts which led to a variety of commisions, including murals for a night club and also a restaurant and eventually started painting professionally in 1986. In 2000 Barry worked with F&D Scene Changes Ltd. in Calgary painting scenery, backdrops & props for Disney, Broadway, Universal Studios and Cirque du Solei, amongst others. Along with his partner, Nicola, Barry moved to Tavira in 2019, which they actually found by chance. Nicola's parents were here for a two month period, and during a visit the couple took a drive around the East Algarve. Within the hour they decided that Tavira was to be their new home. Today Barry now paints a different type of scenery; the beauty, heart and soul of where he lives. Acrylics are his chosen medium for his work on canvas and an air brush for his murals. In the near future he hopes to have an exhibition and is currently looking for a gallery. All his work is available printed on canvas and he

also acccepts commissions by request for all his work, which includes portraits. One of our favourite of his series is the 'Tavira Bikes'. We love how the characters shine through, and the everyday scenes are illustrated; riders with ill-fitting helmets (if any), slippery cobbled roads and over-filled, under-powered bikes... we love them all. For those interested in learning how to paint, Barry holds 'Art in the Afternoon', a weekly painting event. He offers professional instruction in the art of acrylic painting. All materials and equipment are supplied and all ages and skill levels are very welcome. See Facebook 'Art in the afternoon' All of Barry's work can be seen on his website www.barryomurals.com and on Istagram at Barryomurals.

welve months ago, Andy Mahoney was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours for his tireless work in establishing Centre Algarve, Moncarapacho, mainland Europe’s first dedicated special needs holiday centre. Last month Andy, accompanied by his partner Melanie, received the award from Prince Charles at an investiture in Windsor Castle. “For many children with special needs, they find it impossible to take a holiday abroad,” said Mahoney, explaining the reasoning behind the creation of Centre Algarve. The centre has created an environment where everybody feels comfortable, safe and secure within the wonderful grounds that are fully enclosed and gated. Animals and birds bring a sense of tranquility whilst every care has been taken to provide a magical and unique holiday centre where fun and memories are created. Website: www.centrealgarve.org

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR FUTURE HERE IN THE ALGARVE?

P

Is it time we addressed the ageing elephant in the room? Consider your options for the future, in time you may not be as independant as you are now

erhaps we try not to think about it too much, or maybe you have a home somewhere you plan to return to, should the time come when you or your partner need a little extra care or a helping hand. But let's face it, the time will come, and we will all have to deal with it eventually. So what are your options? Of course going 'home' is one of them, but where do you consider home now? How would you feel returning to a place you haven't lived for years, leaving your friends, lifestyle and the wonderful climate you probably moved here for in the first place. What would the place you left years ago be like for you now, at this age and stage in your life? After all, the world and you have seen drastic changes over the last few years alone. Of course many of us have family who would love to take care of us, but is that really an option today? Do we want to become a burden to our children? They have their busy lives to get on with and do they really have time or space to take care of granny and grandad? An alternative is homecare. Perfect if you know when you'll need assistance and are able to plan ahead for help. This, however, can become expensive, should you need care more often. The other concern is, would the limited number of companies offering this type of service have enough staff to look after you when that time comes? Maybe this is a risk people are willing to take, however, now is the time to ask ourselves, is it a viable, safe, reliable option?

14

The most drastic option would be a care home facility. Currently in the Algarve we only have one international (English speaking) care home, which is fully occupied at the moment, and with a waiting list. Apart from buying a property on the complex (also very limited availability), full care would be the only option, but again, there are no current places available, and if there was, it comes at a hefty price, especially if you don't require the full speciality care on offer. A much cheaper option would be a Portuguese facility. Although ideal for native speakers, many of us struggle with the language. How would we feel surrounded by people speaking Portuguese 24/7? I'm not so sure that would work for me. So what are we left with? A care home back home? Well, if you're from the UK, I can assure you (from experience) this is a very expensive option, and with laws changing on a regular basis, what will our rights be in the future? Is selling our homes and assets to pay for care a sensible option? I'm not so sure. Up to now, it appears our options are limited. Here's where we think we have a solution. Our idea is to offer a place that has care facilities available should you need it... whatever level of care, whenever you require it. The idea is to rent a suite on a monthly basis. This suite will be yours and yours only, and available for you to use, as and when you wish, even as full time accommodation. Facilities available include an outdoor pool, indoor pool, gym, sauna and turkish bath. Residents will have a private restaurant and

BBQ area, only available to them and their guests. On the premises would also be a Restaurant, Croquet lawn and Padel tennis courts, which would all be open to the general public. Most importantly we will have medical facilities available. This will include a doctor's surgery and nurses at hand 24 hours a day. So how would you benefit by renting one of our suites? Well, all of the concerns mentioned before are taken care of. Should you or your partner require help, even for a short period of time, you simply stay at your suite for as long as you need to. Help will be there should you need it, at the press of a button. If you decided one of you needed care on a more permanent basis, you have the option to move into your suite. This would even allow you to release equity on any property you may have, should you wish to. Where's the catch? Honestly, there isn't one. You will have no long term contract, you may vacate your suite after giving a short notice period. There will be a nominal fee for upkeep of the property and of course utility bills. The monthly cost for a suite is the same as you can currently rent an apartment for in a typical town in the East Algarve. Where's the location? We are located only 15km from Tavira, Fuzeta and Olhão. If you would like further information, or would like to visit the complex please email us on info@eastalgarvemag.com

ocated in Faro, we explore the church of the Venerável Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, or the Venerable Third Order of Our Lady of Carmo. The facade dates back to 1747 and is the work of master stonemason, Diogo Tavares e Ataíde. The inside of the church

is adorned with exceptional wood carvings and sculptures. The eight handcrafted figures depicting the Passion of Christ are perfect. The panelled wooden ceilings are also a unique feature. While all of this is certainly impressive, the real curiosity, what drew us here and why thousands of people from around the world come to this particular church, can be found

as you enter the courtyard… the Bone Chapel. The Chapel is the final resting place of over 1250 skeletons. Skulls and bones fill and line the entire inside of the Chapel. Chestnut and maple wood from Monchique were used to define and highlight the geometry. The bodies belonged to Carmelite monks and were taken from overfilled cemeteries in Faro. The bodies were exhumed in 1816

after a lifelong service to the Carmo Church. They form an integral and oddly decorative part of the Capela dos Ossos (The Chapel of Bones). The purpose of such Chapels of Bones is said to 'emphasise the brevity of human existence and the need to live a good life to avoid the eternity of hell'. A more practical purpose may have been to free up space in the cemeteries! The sounds of children in a nearby elementary school reiterates the cycle of the human condition. An inscription over the entrance reads: "Stop here and consider the fate that will befall you." The entrance to the chapel is to the right of the main altar and a small admission charge of 2 Euro is levied. The Capela dos Ossos in Faro is open on weekdays from 10 am-12.30 pm and 2-5 pm.

Portuguese

Learning Portuguese 2022 1.THE (WOW,OW) ÃO FACTOR --The Augmentatives 2. THE SOFT - FOFO FACTOR zinhos and inhos -- The Diminutives

T

owards the back end of the year learning new words and grammar can become wearisome. Better to change tack and adapt words already known. This is one way to progress your Portuguese. ÃO! is a starting point. It is pronounced like the English expletive ‘OW,’ but with the characteristic Portuguese nasal sound, as at the end of Olhão. ÃO, together with its fellow nasal diphthongs, ÃE and ÕES, feature regularly in the Portuguese language. Portuguese words may be enhanced by the addition of ÃO to indicate an increase in size or affection. O meu AMIGÃO is my great/bosom buddy, not merely my friend, o meu amigo. Some more illustrations of the ‘ÃO’ effect; ‘we once had a car, um carro, and a house, uma casa. Now, not only do we have a luxury/ limousine car, um CARRÃO, but we own a mansion, um CASARÃO!’ The door, a porta, but um PORTÃO a gate. Uma sala, a room, may be upgraded to um SALÃO, a lounge, saloon or salon. A large jug, um GARRAFÃO, of wine may be preferred to its smaller version, uma garrafa, a bottle. A borra, wine-dregs, result in wine stains BORRÕES (BORRÃO) de vinho. O SEU BRASÃO, your coat-of-arms, may have derived likewise from o seu braço, your arm. Other examples include um barraco, a garden

20

By David Holland shed, but um BARRACÃO is a large building or shed. When ‘augmented,’ o choro, the crying, becomes um CHORÃO, a cry-baby, and doubles up neatly as a Weeping Willow. Uma mulher is a woman, but um MULHERÃO describes a very big woman. To catch a fish, um peixo, is fine, but better to hook a big fish, um PEIXÃO. Likewise a sausage, uma salsicha, has a larger version as um SALSICHÃO. Birds are no exception, the larger swift being um ANDARINHÃO and its smaller cousin, the swallow, um andarinho. In contrast the Portuguese language is blessed with attractive diminutive forms. These qualify size and on occasion, like their augmentative counterparts, depths of feeling. Common forms include inho/a and zinho/a. They can be attached to numerous words to vary shades of meaning. Far more so than in the English language, whose diminutives such as ‘ette,’ ‘let,’ and ‘ling’ attach in relatively few cases. In Portuguese, whether in respect of animals, food, drink or people, the diminutive may be confidently added eg. – um animalzinho, a cute little animal and um gatinho for a beloved cat. Um beijo, a kiss, may be refined to um beijinho (interestingly the augmentative form BEIJÃO is not used in practice, but UMA BEIJOCA is readily understood and has, perhaps, a fruitier flavour than a simple ‘beijo’). Um pãozinho denotes a small bit of bread, ie.

a roll, and um cafezinho, a small (black) coffee. Presumably only needed on rare occasions, but you may request a small beer, uma cervejinha. Examples relating to people include-paizinho (from pai, father) meaning daddy, amiguinho from amigo (friend), and anjinha from anjo (angel). Warmth is conveyed to names in like fashion. Carlinhos from Carlos, Pedrinho from Pedro, Mariazinha from Maria, naturally Ronaldinho from Ronaldo and Ruizinho from Rui. The nuance of a number of adjectives may also be subtly varied. For example fofo, cute, may be softened to fofinha (my cutie). ‘Bonitinha’ from bonita, pretty, implies ‘oh so cute,’ but in context may well express sarcastic undertones! There are other ways of varying Portuguese words from your existing word-bank. By way of example the Portuguese superlatives impact powerfully. Here are a few to savour; Barato, cheap, becomes BARATÍSSIMO-very or extremely cheap. Likewise, FACÍLIMO from fácil, easy; FELICÍSSIMO from feliz, happy; LINDÍSSIMA from linda, beautiful; RIQUÍSSIMO from rico, rich, and finally, SENSUALÍSSIMA from sensual. In other words extremely EASY, extremely HAPPY, extremely BEAUTIFUL extremely RICH and extremely SENSUAL! So here’s to 2022. Feliz Ano Novo David Holland

avigating a real estate transaction can be stressful during 'normal' times, but COVID-19 has added an extra layer of complexity to the process. During these uncertain times with ever-changing rules and restrictions regarding travel and quarantine measures, a lot of people who were thinking of selling a home have wondered whether they should move forward, or sit tight until things return to normality. However, the number of people visiting the Algarve increased in 2021 versus the previous year and most of the prospects were serious property hunters. Many of these clients are still more driven than ever because of historically low mortgage rates. Others are cash buyers, which are faced with negative interest rates on their savings accounts in their home countries. Owning land and property has always been seen as a good way of preserving wealth and protecting capital against inflation. Portugal is and will stay in the focus of the world. It is considered to be a safe, expat friendly country with a pleasant climate and relatively low cost of living. Some homeowners have chosen to postpone putting their property for sale and some have taken their property off the market resulting in fewer homes available for purchase. That low inventory coupled with good buyer demand means that sellers have less competition and more leverage. Tight supply has kept pressure on home prices. You can still get a great price for your home, and because of increased buyer competition, we are still seeing multiple offer situations and some homes going for over list price. Also the increase in people working from home has made some homeowners wonder if they need a larger place or a more functional layout, so they are also looking for a new home. If you want to sell your property in a reasonable time frame and with confidence, you'll need to know all of your options so you can make an informed decision that best aligns with your current circumstances and goals. What can you do to attract buyers to sell your home in a timely manner? Land & Houses Algarve – Yellow Homes compiled a list of useful tips. From developing a strong online presence to

www.eastalgarvemag.com

making your home move-in ready, these tips can help shorten the time between listing and selling your home. List your house with a real estate agent who has a proven track record Finding the right real estate agent is the first step and one that should not be taken lightly. To navigate a process involving property documentation and back-and-forth communications between agent, homeowner and prospective buyer, it is advisable to have a professional assisting you. A licensed and reputable real estate agent has the resources to properly list your house. They will understand your needs and then tailor the services to your end goal in any market. Beyond that, their experience can potentially save you thousands of euros and time. Engage a law firm Selling or buying a home will probably be one of the largest and most significant events you will make in your life. It involves property laws which can be unique to the area which can raise special issues/problems not present in other transactions. Without an expert to keep track of all the intricacies of the transaction, you cannot necessarily count on the sale to go quickly or smoothly. Be realistic with your listing price Nothing kills a real estate deal faster than an overpriced property. An experienced agent will have good knowledge of the local market and will research the prices of listed and recently sold homes in and around your neighbourhood before putting your house on the market.

Having a realistic asking price is critical to sell a home quickly and doesn’t necessarily mean the lowest price. Homebuyers are smart and better informed than ever. They know when a property is overpriced and simply ignore it. Don't let your listing go stale! Prepare the house for viewings Good preparation is everything! You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression. Preparing your home for viewers, or "staging" as it's called, is important and it is the key to creating a pleasant environment. It will not only ensure your property is sold faster but can potentially add thousands of euros to its value. Keep the pets away Pets are family. But they're your family. You may be accustomed to or not be aware of the scent which can put buyers off. Let the Light in and light the fire Most buyers want to see that a home has plenty of natural light. Remove heavy draperies and open up the shutters or blinds. If it's a cold evening or a chilly day, light your fire. Urgent sale: Sell for less than market value Making a steep price reduction can be a solution when nothing else seems to be working. Your property instantaneously becomes the best buy in the area. If this doesn't work, consider selling for less than replacement value. It's an option that should only be used under extreme circumstances if you need to reliquify quickly. Speak with your agent and/or change your real estate agent in case they have lost interest. Final Thoughts Buying and selling a home in today's

environment definitely looks different than it did this time last year. Land & Houses Algarve – Yellow Homes is taking the proper precautions to keep everyone as safe as possible, and keep transactions moving forward. Our company has been successful at selling properties in the Algarve for more than 20 years. It's still a good time to sell, but you need someone on your side who is up-to-date on the current market and is looking out for your best interests. With more property sales than property listings we are more eager than ever to list quality properties or plots, particularly around the areas of Tavira, Praia Verde, Manta Rota, Moncarapacho, Santa Catarina, Almancil and Vilamoura. If you are considering selling your property and would like to speak with a member of our team then please call us now on 281 320 281 to make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon. e often hear that change starts with yourself. We all know we should question what goes into our food, we all know we should eat healthy, we all know we should make more of an effort to go back to a more basic and sustainable way of living. This philosophy was the driving force for Lino Nunes to invest in himself and take a beekeeping course in Salir. Eight years ago Lino was a newbie to the world of bees, now with knowledge, experience and a wealth of passion, he shares his experiences and lifts a little of the veil of the hidden lives of bees. Lino explains that he has some 70 hives, with each hive containing over a thousand bees, he manages them closely with his father. Before the beekeeping adventure started, the two would see each other once a month, now they see each other several times a week. It has become an activity that has brought father, son, brothers, aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews closer in a fun, healthy and productive way. The family has 4 locations in Santa Catarina where the bees are kept. Being so close to the Ocean, the Ria Formosa and the mild climates the East Algarve offers, make the honey from this area unique to the world. What else sets the Nunes honey apart from the honey you buy in the supermarket? Most honey you find will be a mixed blend, the origin and

that sugar has been added to it, it means the opposite. You have honey in its purest form, the most beneficial for your body. Lino shares that while his own bees are doing well and growing in strength and numbers each year, other bees are struggling and their numbers are declining worldwide. He explains that we can help them by adding high pollen producing plants, such as Lavender and Rosemary to our gardens and balconies. Allowing weeds to go into flower also helps, some golf courses and municipalities are taking this into account and only cutting weeds as they go to seed. A concern of keeping flowers for bees to feed on is getting stung. Lino assures us that bees are harmless, let them do their thing and they will not sting you. Bees are not aggressive like wasps are, they are only concerned about getting food and working hard to please their Queen. Enthusiastically he tells us that he himself is allergic to bees and is not afraid of them on a day to day basis. He also shares that he is receiving treatment from the hospital to free him of his allergy and encourages others to do the same and not live with an unnecessary allergy. We also learnt Lino holds a degree in economics and perhaps his biggest message of the day is to start small and make a difference, buy locally produced goods, support local initiatives, businesses and restaurants, in this way, your money enters a circular economy. Nunes honey is sold in Faro, however, Lino can be reached through FB and their website and can arrange to meet you for a sweet deal at your local cafe or coffee shop. the source of where honey is coming from is not known. Nunes on the other hand knows exactly where their bees feed. They produce two single types of honey, Orange Blossom and Rosemary honey. Honey from Rosemary flowers yields a darker richer colour and the flavour is much more intense, the Orange Blossom is a lighter golden colour and the subtle fragrance of flowers can be tasted. The biggest difference, however, is that supermarket honey is heated, boiled and often sugar is added to the mix. Heating prevents honey from crystallising, sadly while it may make for a prettier and more pourable honey, in so doing, it also kills the natural benefits and enzymes honey has. The honey produced by Nunes is untreated, raw and untampered with, the proof of this is that their honey will crystallise after 3 or 4 months. Crystallisation is normal and natural, it does not mean the honey has gone off or

THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US...

W

... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to live in and love Olhão

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”.

Olhão was not on our radar at first. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight. Each month we will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! Olhão’s Esplanade and CarFree Weekends To “Stroll” means to walk in a leisurely way. Celebrating Olhão’s new esplanade, that is exactly what people are doing. This relaxing path now stretches from the ferry landing all the way west to the Marina boat ramp. Both locals and tourists enjoy the new wide walkway. Safe open spaces attract families and couples and old guys like me! People enjoy staging photos against the backdrop of the Ria Formosa waters and bobbing boats in the Marina. I will go out on a limb here to say people are loving this new Olhão open air experience. Parks on each end offer sites for both relaxing on a bench, or for the ambitious, to enjoy some outdoor exercise equipment. While I’m out here on my limb, a suggestion. I’m just a newbie here with no influence, but what the hell, here goes... The last few years have been a huge challenge for Olhão residents. Sure, those of us arriving here from

www.eastalgarvemag.com

outside Portugal are lucky to discover this quiet town fronting the beautiful Ria Formosa, but local folks need to work and when we are all hiding from covid, paychecks become scarce. Stay with me... We discovered the “restaurant row” car free weekends last August. Carina and I experienced the magical calming effect it had. Restaurants placed seating right out to the road’s edge and the feel of turning that busy street into a soundless, safe walking space, seemed to automatically attract couples, casually surveying the ample offerings for dinner or drinks. Speaking from my limb, I believe Olhão should extend this practice to include “CarFree Weekends” during evenings from May through October. People would come in droves to enjoy the Olhão “destination” experience. I’ll suggest this would likely double many annual business revenues (and taxes). Most importantly, expanding “CarFree Weekends” would help stabilise incomes for the local people who staff these businesses. There, I’ve said it! Esquina da Baixa Right across from where the twin Olhão Mercado markets meet, sits this local favourite restaurant offering a prime sunkissed people watching venue. They serve light meals which we’ve enjoyed and tempting desserts for people that walk more than we manage to, but my mention here is about the coffee. Everywhere in Portugal I see local folks enjoying coffee in tiny cups. Me doing the same thing would make me think, “I’m a Giant!” **

So, Carina and I usually ask for cappuccino which arrives in a bigger cup and thus, contains more coffee! During our first visit to Esquina da Baixa, we joined the people watching squad and ordered our bigger cups of coffee. What arrived was a very affordable large cup which did double duty as a piece of art! At first, we thought there must be some machine that decorated each cup based on a formula. Instead, I got to see barista Luis Patricio embroidering each creation in freehand with a different design for each cup. Together with his manager, Claudio Filipio, their delivery of these tasty arty drinks matches so much of what we have seen here in Olhão. As with my column from last month where we mentioned the Mexican restaurant, "Torito", we keep seeing that “made from scratch” originality in so many local eateries. Maybe it’s the tough competition here. Perhaps it is simply the Portuguese doing what they do. Either way, please stay tuned to watch us eat our way down the street in future columns! Footnote: “I’m a Giant”, apologies to comedian Jim Jeffries for heisting his original joke. Interested in the CarFree Weekends idea? Write me at hankryan2003@yahoo.com

For our full introduction, see our first article online in the December 2021 issue. We choose to focus on businesses here in Olhão where we have actually been customers first. Any future advertising from these businesses that supports Eastern Algarve Magazine is purely coincidental :-)

hen owner Milene finished her studies in Lisbon and returned to her home town of Olhão, she found herself in the middle of an economic crisis. Having graduated in Nutritional studies, dreams were put on hold and to make ends meet she started working in real estate with her mother. A few years later Milene saw that the government was offering grants for innovative projects. Using the knowledge learned in her studies, Milene put together a plan for a restaurant offering healthy local products, with workshops on how to cook vegetarian food, and also yoga, both body friendly. The project was a winner and her dream began to unfold. The building of choice was originally a rather run down cafe. Along with her boyfriend who is an architect, they renovated the premises into the simple yet elegant restaurant it is today. A good friend Pedro Caboz was working as a pharmacist, however, Milene knew that his real passion was cooking. It didn't take much effort to persuade him to join the team and he is now the head chef. The name 'Figo de Pito' translates to Prickly Pear, chosen as it is a typical, regional fruit of the cactus, but not often used in restaurants. The fruit is in season in July and September which is when you'll find

BAD ADVICE...

Ask the

Expat

Not all advice is good and not all people are as genuine as you may think. Enjoy our 'bad advice' column from the expert we have all met, know and love... the Expat.

T

his month, we sought East Algarve's premier astrologer (we found her printed details under our windscreen wiper). Ida Dannae promises insights into the planetary movements of 2022. What is pulling your signs chain, will it be a floater or a flush for you? Ida brings her best Cockney wisdom to how "shit *might* go!" From Clapham, to Catford UK, to Monte Gordo, she is going to let you have it, warts and all! Aries - March 21 to April 20 Though you can be fun, what a moody Barney Rubble! With Mars making you extra scrappy in 2022, you better calm down and jump in the

ocean! For good luck this year, consider the colour cream, and pour it on everything, don't mind the waistline just treat yourself and make it thick. Your lucky symbol this year is a key. If you find one, you never know what it might open, so refuse to leave. Lucky drink - Vodka Red Bull and it will get you noticed, but don't overdo it or you'll be ramming unbearable! Taurus - 21 April to 20 May Pig-headed as you are, you might have cause to shut your trap to gobble love. Venus is warning you of a spanking if you close up and dig your heels in. Learn your lesson! Dream hard this year and never let your purse touch the floor or it will fall empty. Your lucky colour is peach, so imagine getting that slapped. Be elegant and drink Red Wine. Not the cheap box rubbish as that makes you a smart-ass, but sparingly, fine wine, over €2 a glass

44

Gemini - 21 May to 21 June You say you are straightforward! Well that's you falling into your own pony and trap! Mercury is having an off-year, so you better check both ways before crossing the road! If you were a superstition, it would be crossing your fingers, to remind you of your right hand. This year orange is your lucky colour, so squirt it all over yourself, and make your tan extra glowing. Your lucky drink is an Amber Beer. Soft and steady, reflect slowly on your glass. You have the time of two for you. Cancer - 22 June to 22 July The moon is playing tricks on you this year, so don't lose your shell at night as tides of emotions roll high. You are defensive, but sweet on the inside. I recommend staying out of hot water and avoiding overcooking your salty side. Avoid cracks in the sidewalk as it might shatter your shell. This year your lucky colour is wearing white, so get out your sailing apparel! Your lucky drink is a Margarita but don't overshoot the tequila, or you'll be a crabby wet squealer. Leo - 23 July to 22 August Bloody hell! It is not always about you! You might think you are the bees knees, but sometimes take your hands off of the honey! Ruled by the sun, watch your flares and no, not jeans, but the snarling fanged one! For a talisman, wear an evil eye as you definitely have some haters! Wearing yellow will brighten that disposition and tame your mane. Your lucky drink is Champagne, but don't

lose your crown by being too showy, if you can help yourself! Virgo - 23 August to 22 September Oh, you can be so damned critical, so calm that down or you'll be known as that dental flosser! Your superstition for 2022 is trying to "hold your breath in a tunnel!" It might quiet your talented, but demanding mind. Remember to eventually open your gob, hopefully with something nice to say! Your lucky colour this year is mint green. It is a calming colour they often use in institutions. Think about that and wear it! Your lucky drink is Creme De Menthe, drop some ice, freshen that breath and chill out! Libra - September 22 to October 23 You can be a showboater, but try to be a little less Sexton Blake. You've lots of energy, but your personality is often seen far too rarely and some might forget you have one at all. When Venus plays with romance, you can be far too horny and needy. Sometimes, put it away and take a cold shower. Knock on wood for good luck this year, but don't release the worms. Support yourself in the colour of green, calm green, not your green-eyed monster. This year your lucky drink is Vinho Verde, with a little bubble, but not for show. Scorpio - 23 October to 21 November Some say you've got a little butter on your nutter and that you'll fling your sting like a wing. Pluto and Mars make you, well a little Jekyll and Hyde, but the nicest part is loving and very deep! For good luck, always make eye contact

when you make a toast! You can see if they can cope with your passion and intensity. Wear midnight blue, for your mysterious allure and capture. Your lucky drink is Bourbon, but like the street Mardi Gras, it is over when you've destroyed the bottle! Sagittarius - 22 November to 21 December There's another word that rhymes with blunt, so don't be one! You may often be right, but you can be abrasive so press your own mute button! You're adventurous as 2022 rules you by Jupiter, however, ensure you don't fly on Friday the 13th, as it may be your last! Good luck is found in the colour aquamarine. Shoot Rum for reckless fun, but avoid running around smashing everything in your wake. Capricorn - 22 November to 19 January There's a fine line between leading and neurosis! There's a fine line between Serious Sue and a Bubble Bath! Let loose and have a laugh? Good luck is a penny, heads up! You aren't a spendthrift, but it might put some head in your purse. Saturn is your ruler, so accessorise in black to bring the winter charm back. You can be dry so why not sip on a Dry

Martini and enjoy observing like a spy? Aquarius - 20 January to 18 February We get you are "different", but there comes a point you can seem a little Tom Thumb! Remember you are ruled by Uranus so don't be one! Be intuitive, be true and yes you are creative, yet lazy too. Keep your umbrella outside as you don't want to bring in the rain! Wear indigo like a magi and play your music high! Your lucky drink is Absinthe, but steady when you get heady now, don't throw up the green fairy. Pisces - 19 February to 20 March Oh you're a dreamer, but you can't just be a custard creamer! Neptune can pull you under into fantasies, however, remember this is planet earth! Don't swim too deep, little fishy! Find real friends to swim with. Remember you have a secret temper so show your sweet face. For good luck, use salt for psychic protection! But remember to touch the shaker and remember where you are. Yes, the Tapas bar. You are drawn to a range of blues. Dare to double denim. This year drink Vodka for some clarity and don't hit the ground too hard!

TAX CALENDAR: DIARY DATES FOR 2022

W

e wish all readers a healthy year of 2022, and it is our desire that the new year is much easier to everyone than the year we just said goodbye to. Below you can find some of the dates that you need to put in your diary, concerning taxes in Portugal. Please remember that before you submit your IRS you need to perform some tasks as per the new habits acquired in the previous years: tasks like validating or registering invoices at the tax portal, are now procedures that became part of the routine of any taxpayer. Your role is important in determining your IRS deductions, therefore check the tax calendar, to make sure you don’t lose any deduction or pay any fines. JANUARY If you have a business activity which was VAT exempt under article 53, but in 2021 you exceeded the VAT threshold, then you need to change your VAT status until the 31st of January. Likewise, if you were paying VAT but did not exceed the threshold in 2021 and wish to become exempt, the same deadline applies. If you have a rental contract and are not obliged to issue monthly rental receipts, you have until the 31st of January to declare the yearly rental income for 2021. FEBRUARY Each taxpayer has until the 25th of February to query, report and verify invoices. To do this you should access the e-Factura portal and access to your personal page, where you should verify if all your invoices have been properly communicated. If you find any unpaid invoices, or any invoices not recorded, you can add these to your file. It is also important to check in which category your invoices are recorded and move them into the appropriate section (ie health, education, etc) otherwise the deduction will not be accepted. These procedures need to be performed for each household expenditure holder, including dependants. It is also important to update or register your household for tax purposes, before 15/02. Please note that this can be very important, not only for tax purposes, but for other related matters, such as inscription at schools, kindergarten, crèches, etc and or other tax benefits you may be entitled to. MARCH If you became a resident in Portugal in 2021

48

and want to apply for the Non-Habitual Residency scheme, you have until the end of March to submit your application at the tax portal. During March, you also need to check your e-Factura page at the tax portal and if you feel the information is not correct, you can challenge the calculations made by the Tax Authorities. In other words, your tax deductions will be summarised here, under family general expenses, healthcare expenses, training and education expenses, charges with property for permanent residence, invoices VAT and costs with foster homes; if the total of your invoices is not consistent with the one totals shown in the portal, you have this two week window to contest it. Please note that it's necessary to check this for each taxpayer. APRIL You can submit your IRS (Personal Income Tax) declaration for 2021, from the 1st of April, until the end of June. This means that all declarations can be submitted during these three months, irrespective of your income category (employment income, pension income, self-employment income, rentals, etc.) Please note that all residents, include NonHabitual Residents, need to submit a tax declaration, even if their income is only pensions, and tax exempt, they still must fulfil this obligation. All non-residents that have income from Portuguese sources (i.e. property rentals, sale of a property, etc) also need to submit a yearly declaration. MAY Payment of the first instalment of the IMI council tax. If in your case, the council tax is lower than 100€, this will be the only payment date you need to remember. If it is higher, please look for further instalment dates in August and November. JUNE Do not forget to submit the IRS (Personal Income Tax) for 2021 by the end of June. Please remember that if you do not deliver your IRS on time, or if you fail to meet some of the deadlines above, you may lose some or all your tax deductions. Late delivery of your IRS may also cancel your IMI (Council Tax) exemption. JULY If you have IRS tax to receive, the settlement must be made by 31st of July. This is the deadline for the Tax Authorities to refund you.

AUGUST If you have IRS tax to pay, you should make the payment no later than the last day of August, provided you have delivered the tax return within the time limits. If the tax return was submitted after the deadline, payment may be made until 31st of December (fines and interest will apply). The second instalment of the IMI council tax is due this month. This is applicable for all those where the yearly IMI payment is higher than 500€ per taxpayer. SEPTEMBER If you have AIMI (additional council tax) to pay, this needs to be paid by the end of September. Remember that you are liable for AIMI payment on all properties owned by companies. Individual owners are only exempt from AIMI, in the first 600 thousand Euros worth of property (based on the tax value and not on the commercial value). NOVEMBER Payment of the third and last instalment of the IMI council tax. This is applicable for all those where the yearly IMI payment is higher than 100€ per taxpayer. RECURRING DATES Please remember that if you have a business activity, you need to report your sales file by the 12th of each month. This also includes business income from AL (rental) license holders. Each month you also need to issue your monthly rental receipts in case you have a rental contract registered. The car tax needs to be paid by the last day of the month when the car was registered. Please do not forget this as the fines are high in this case. If you have a business activity, please remember that each quarter you need to submit a social security declaration, to ascertain how much social security you will pay each month in the following quarter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us; tax planning is critical and you and your company cannot afford surprises. Contact our office to discuss your personal situation and avoid any unnecessary fines.

Socialising can be physically draining and cause a 'social hangover' to this little Elf. Little Elf wishes people saw his great communication even when he can't speak correctly, but can read perfectly or create dialogues between his toys. Not everyone likes people looking at them, and so little Elf avoids looking at people and looks to the floor. Christmas jumpers are not for everyone and for our little Elf he really struggles wearing different textures. Little Elf thinks that if he likes something everyone else will like it too. Little Elf knows when he needs personal space at a party, so if you see him going to a corner you know what he is going through. Loud music, lights, crowds and decorations cause overload to this Elf. It is hard for him to manage what others give to him when he is unable to control it – little Elf likes to control everything in his life so he can predict what is going to happen and to avoid a sensory overload. Elf finds change hard and he needs to bring order in whatever way he can! Little Elf just eats specific food, because the sensory issue affects the way he sees and feels food. Social skills require practice for this Elf, and sleep can be difficult sometimes. Sometimes Little Elf seems to ignore others. But it's not true… he is just 100% engaged in one thing at a time. Too many little Elfs are still excluded from their peers at school, parties or even in their friend's family, because they are not understood. If you have a little Elf at home or you know a family with a child like this little Elf, please share this article and introduce them to Associação SER Igual in Tavira. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU PERHAPS?! How many times do we hear of people joining the gym in January to visit only once? How many people decide to detox after their Christmas blow out and never actually do it properly?

I

f you start the year full of ambition, then hats off to you. However, will you last the course?! My personal view is why wait for a special day to begin looking after your health and wellbeing? Every day is a school day. Every day you have the opportunity to select healthy options or make poor choices that will reflect within our body. Your body can only take so much abuse. Typically, in your 40s you will start to experience a push back when your body begins complaining. The odd twinge, out of breath, fatigue perhaps? It’s rare to find anyone over 50 with no health challenges. Why wait until you are in crisis before taking action? Here are my top health tips to achieve and maintain a healthy immune system:• Detox daily – or at the very least, monthly • Check you are consuming quality

54

nutrition – 80% of my clients are not – they have been duped by advertising spin • Take appropriate exercise – throwing yourself around a gym may not be the best course of action for you • Check your saliva and urine pH levels regularly to ensure you are not over or under acidic or alkaline. • Enjoy ‘me’ time every day to keep in balance and that your emotions are appropriately channelled • Whatever lights up your passion – do it daily • If you don’t like what you are doing – make a plan to change it Balance is the key to living a long, healthy, and happy life. Laugh lots, love, forgive – not because the other person deserves it, but because you are worth it! Live every day in gratitude. Pay it forward. Every kind gesture you make to another individual is a gift to you too. Your body will

Gardens

NEW YEAR NEW GARDEN

It’s that time of year again… we’re not referring to Christmas, but to indoor damp and humidity. A dehumidifier will help to solve indoor damp, but it will mean using more electricity. However, we can also get plants in our house to lower humidity.

“Great landscaping lies in the eyes of its creator”

W

hether you plan on "borrowing ideas" or plan on creating your own landscaping design, you should have at the very least a basic understanding of the principles of landscape design. This doesn't mean that you have to apply every principle to every part of your plan. But just having an understanding of these principles will help you generate ideas and increase your creativity. Great landscaping lies in the eyes of its creator. So, while the principles of landscape design are great guidelines to follow, don't feel like they're the "have to rules" of landscaping. Abstract and creativity are allowed. The Principles of Landscape Design Unity should be one of your main goals in your design. It may be better understood and applied as consistency and repetition. Repetition creates unity by repeating alike elements like plants, plant groups, or decor throughout the landscape. Consistency creates unity in the sense that some or all of the different elements of the landscape fit together to create a whole. Unity can be achieved by the consistency of character of elements in the design. By character, I mean the height, size, texture, color schemes, etc. of different elements. A good example would be in the use of landscaping rocks and accent boulders. If you've ever seen a landscape design that had one large white round boulder here and another large red square granite boulder there and so on, then you've seen that unity wasn't created by this particular element. This is just one example, but the principle applies to all other elements such as groups of plants and materials. A simple way to create unity in your landscape is by creating themes. And one of the simplest ways to create themes is by using a little garden decor. Creating a theme garden is easier when it's related to something you're interested in or have a passion for. If you're into butterflies for instance, you could create a theme using plants that attract butterflies as

56

well as using statues, ornaments, and other decor that are related to butterflies. Unity should be expressed through at least one element in your landscape and preferably more. Using elements to express a main idea through consistent style and a specific theme is what creates harmony. Simplicity is actually one of the principles in design and art. It's one of the best guidelines you can follow as a beginner or do it yourselfer. Just keep things simple to begin with. You can do more later. Simplicity in planting, for instance, would be to pick two or three colours and repeat them throughout the garden or landscape. Keeping decor to a minimum and within a specific theme as well as keeping hard landscapes, such as boulders, consistent is also practicing simplicity. Balance in design is just as the word implies. A sense of equality. There are basically two types of balance in landscape design. Symmetrical and Asymmetrical. Symmetrical balance is where there are more or less equally spaced matching elements of the garden design. With a garden equally divided, both sides could share all or part of the same shape, form, plant height, plant groupings, colours, bed shapes, theme, etc. You may remember creating something like this when you were a kid in art class at school. Where you take a piece of paper, splash paint on it, fold it in half, unfold it, and then it magically creates an interesting symmetrical design. So symmetrical balance or design is somewhat of, a mirror image or reflection. Asymmetrical balance on the other hand is one of the principles of landscape design that's a little more complex. While textures, forms, colours, etc. may remain constant to create some unity, shapes and hard landscapes may be more random. This form of balance often has separate or different themes with each having an equal but different type of attraction. Asymmetrical may be better understood as actually being unbalanced, abstract, or free

form while still creating unity and balance through the repetition of some elements. A good example of this would be where bed shapes or paths differ on both sides of the landscape dividing line while still sharing some of the same elements and plants. One side could be curved with a sense of flow while the other side is straight, direct, hard, and completely opposite. Again, unity and balance will be created through other elements. Contrast can be very interesting and this type of form can create a neat contrast. Flowing lines are pleasing to the eye but the bold contrast of a curve combined with a straight line can be very interesting. Asymmetrical balance isn't dependant on the shape of your garden. It can be but generally it's not. An example might be where one side of the garden is mostly large shade trees while the other side is predominately a lower growing flower garden or even a mix of both examples. Like I stated earlier, the landscaping can be abstract while still maintaining unity through other elements such as rocks, plants, and decor. Contrast and harmony can also be achieved using plants. Fine foliage versus coarser foliage, round leaves versus spiked leaves as well as colour compliments and contrasts. Plant height, colour, and texture may be varied from one area to the next but each area should stay consistent within its own theme. You'll hear me talk about "themes" a lot. Many successful do-it-yourself designs follow a basic theme to achieve most of the principles of landscape design described on this page. The proper use of plants or garden decor or a mix of both is a simple way to achieve themes. Colour adds the dimension of real life and interest to the landscape. Bright colours like reds, yellows and oranges seem to advance toward you and can actually make an object seem closer to you. Cool colours like greens, blues, and pastels seem to move away from you and can make an object seem farther from you.

Grays, blacks, and whites are considered neutral colours and are best used in the background with bright colours in the foreground. However, to increase depth in a landscape, you can use dark and coarse textured plants in the foreground and use fine textured and light coloured plants in the background. Colours can also be used to direct your attention to a specific area of the garden. A bright display among cooler colours would naturally catch the eye. Natural transition can be applied to avoid radical or abrupt changes in your landscape design. Transition is basically gradual change. It can best be illustrated in terms of plant height or colour but can also be applied to all elements in the landscape including but not limited to textures, foliage shape or size, and the size and shape of different elements. In other words, transition can be achieved by the gradual, ascending or descending, arrangement of different elements with varying textures, forms, colours, or sizes. An example of a good transition would be a stair step effect from large trees to medium trees to shrubs to bedding plants. This example is where a little knowledge of proper plant selection would come in handy.

Transition is one of the principles of landscape design that can be used to "create illusions" in the landscape. For example a transition from taller to shorter plants can give a sense of depth and distance (like in a painting), making the garden seem larger than it really is. A transition from shorter to taller plants could be used to frame a focal point to make it stand out and seem closer than it really is. Line is of the more structural principles of landscape design. It can mostly be related to the way beds, walkways, and entryways move and flow. Straight lines are forceful and direct, while curvy lines have a more natural, gentle, flowing effect. Proportion simply refers to the size of elements in relation to each other. Of all the principles

To Tavira Look out for the flags

of landscape design, this one is quite obvious but still requires a little thought and planning. Most of the elements in landscape design can be intentionally planned to meet the proper proportions. For instance if you are creating a small courtyard garden, an enormous seven foot garden statue placed in the center would be way out of proportion and a little tacky to say the least. Or a small four foot waterfall and pond placed in the center of a large open yard would get lost in the expanse. Don't misunderstand this to mean that if you have a large yard you can't have smaller features or garden decor. Proportion is relative and elements can be scaled to fit by creating different rooms in the garden. The goal is to create a pleasing relationship among the three dimensions of length, breadth, and depth or height. Also, special consideration and study should be given to proper plant selection to avoid using plants that are out of proportion. Just remember it is your garden and your inspiration should come through in the design, but remember the basics and everything should work out fine.
