INDIAN FARMER

Welcome... ... to your July issue. This month we visit a brand new Thai Massage Parlour in Vila Real de Santo António owned by the wonderful Pornnapat Kawin. We also enjoyed a `Taste of Porto´ at the recently opened Offline Restaurant in Tavira where we met Nuno and Chef Fernando to hear about the concept of their restaurant. Our artist of the month this month, happens to also be a great friend. Manoel Cavalar (A.K.A. Manny) has a truly unique and beautiful style, we love it! We float along the Ria Formosa with Altura Adventures on a paddle board excursion and also meet the multi-talented dental technician and artist Wolfgang Spengler. This plus much more, including news, finance and health news. As ever, we welcome your comments, please email us on info@eastalgarvemag.com

Portuguese

Learning Portuguese 2022(2) Back to Basics- Quirks and Usage of the Portuguese Definite Articles A,AS,O,OS (AASOOS)

A

s we enter the second half of the year, this article focuses on another article, the ‘Definite’ one; ‘o Artigo Definido.’ The Portuguese definite articles (‘a’ and ‘as’, and ‘o’ and ‘os’) indicate respectively the feminine and masculine genders and their singular or plural. Its English relative, the infamous ‘The,’ is non-commital in this context. The Romans were a knowing race and prospered without articles. Instead they relied on a variety of endings to indicate what they really meant. Estonian, Finnish and Russian are examples of other tongues that do without. On the other hand, the German language retains three definite articles, ‘Der’ and ‘Die’ for masculine and feminine and its old-fashioned neuter ‘Das.’ In contrast to English, the Portuguese definite article generally precedes names. Thus, reference to Maria will be to ‘a Maria.’ The definite article is also placed before some forms of address. This may indicate in typical Portuguese style a sign of respect. ‘O Senhor’ and ‘a Senhora’ as polite forms of ‘you’

illustrate the point. No precise equivalent in English, other than, perhaps, ‘Sir ‘or ‘Madam’ which are a little dated. An alternative translation is ‘Mister’ or ‘Miss.’ However, the use of these stand-alone forms of address in English should be avoided, as they display a certain coarseness on the part of the speaker, and a hint of disdain towards the recipient; vis. ‘hey Mister!’ or ‘watcha Miss!’ The definite article in the Portuguese language is also generally used before the names of countries. Thus ‘a Inglaterra’ rather than simply England. An important exception is ‘Portugal’ itself when the definite article is not required. This privilege/quirk is extended to its former colonies and protectorates. These include the Portuguese speaking lands of Angola, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Macau, Moçambique (Mozambique) and Timor Leste (East Timor). But, interestingly, Brazil is not included in this category. The definite article is applied. Thus Brazil is ‘o Brasil;’ maybe a sign of its independence, following decolonisation way back in the 19th century, (precisely 200 years ago in 1822). Similarly the definite article is used before rivers, as is the case in English,

A FUN PLACE TO MEET LIKE MINDED PEOPLE

AND BY THE WAY,

so the Thames in Portuguese is ‘o Tãmisa’, and ‘o Sena’, the Seine. Again as in English, the article is not required before cities and towns, although in Portuguese exceptions are made. Where the name itself has a physical meaning then the article is used, as in ‘O Porto,’ the city of Porto, meaning ‘harbour or port.’ Another feature of the Portuguese definite article is its ability to combine with prepositions.’ This eases the flow of language and applies to both singular and plural. The following contractions illustrate its operation; da, do, das and dos (meaning ‘from’ or ‘of’ the). In conclusion, mention should be made of the definite article’s alter ego the ‘indefinite.’ In Portuguese the indefinite article again has both feminine and masculine forms, uma and um. It also boasts plural forms, umas and uns, which can be translated as ‘some’ or not at all-thus umas mulheres may mean ‘women’ or ‘some women.’ Até a próxima vez – ‘til next time. David Holland

Meet Pornnapat Kawin who has recently opened Magic Thai Massage after a long road to finding herself and her destiny here in the East Algarve

MAGIC THAI MASSAGE

A

month ago, Pornnapat Kawin opened her own and very first Thai Massage Parlour in the harbour city of Vila Real de Santo António. Located just outside the heart of the centre, Pornnapat welcomes us, with a beautiful smile, into the tranquillity of her parlour. The parlour is adorned with luxurious materials, it is the nicest massage parlour we have visited so far. The use of high quality fabrics and materials is both unique and versatile, allowing different areas and sections to be created when needed. This flexibility makes it possible for a couple to be together in the same area for a massage, or complete privacy can be created if desired. It might sound simplistic, however, this is quite special as it is something we have not yet found here in the east of the Algarve. As a couple, we have either had to take turns to have a massage, which means a lot of waiting around, or we have been in different rooms from each other, which has always felt like a little bit of a shame. Noticing the fabrics, Pornnapat tells us they are indeed special as they come from Thailand. She brought them with her last December after visiting family in Thailand, it

8

was during this visit when everything fell into place and the decision was made to open her own massage parlour when she returned to Portugal. Pornnapat was born and raised in Chiang Mai which is world famous as the place and educational centre for Thai Massage. Like many, this is where she also learned and received her various diplomas in Thai Massage, she did this alongside her academic studies in Sociology and Linguistics. At the time Pornnapat did not know that Thai massage would be her future and would allow her to travel all throughout Europe. Twelve years ago, after obtaining her degree in Sociology and Linguistics, Pornnapat initially moved abroad to further her studies and gain her PhD. However, while she was in Russia studying and working as a massage therapist, she found her own truth - the only real way to learn is by going, experiencing, doing and living life - her knowledge and ability in Thai Massage would grant her the opportunity to move to different countries and work in different parlours. There was no stopping Pornnapat, within 10 months she travelled to 9 different countries. All these travels and working in different places showed Pornnapat all the little details that were important to customers, this is why

for her parlour she has had custom massage tables made, which are wider and more comfortable for her clients. She has chosen soft fabric table coverings, which are washed after each use, instead of crinkly paper that is often used. The facehole is super comfortable as it is padded with memory foam providing a very neck friendly position. Pornnapat has employed Professional Thai therapists Ms. Nichapha Pokhapitiphat and Mr. Narongrit Homduang to work with her. Together, the three of them offer an array of different massages and therapies. A few of the benefits of Thai massage are listed below, many more can be offered and tailored to specific needs and requirements. Everyone has their own unique makeup, golfers are known to have stiffness in the hips, working on this area allows for better rotation and benefits their swing, whereas if you play padel or tennis the movement of the upper body is more important. PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS Helps boost inner energy levels, Develops discipline and self-control, Achieves better health and increases stamina, Reduces and relieves stress and anxiety PHYSICAL Relaxes and increases flexibility of the muscles, Improves breathing, Helps posture

THE SOFT POWER OF THAI MASSAGE Thai Massage is an effective healing massage with a combination of acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. It believes that our body remains healthy if we maintain the energy balance in relation to the energy of the universe. If there is an energy imbalance, the body will get sick.

All massages at Magic Thai Massage & wellness are the same price and start from only 25 Euros for 30 minutes. We hope you get a chance to visit Pornnapat and her team. Food

A taste of Porto

at Restaurant Offline From the famous Restaurant Capa Negra II in Porto, Nuno and Fernando invite you to visit their brand new Restaurant `Offline´ in Tavira

M

eet Nuno and Fernando, owners of the recently opened Restaurant ´Offline´ in Tavira. Both from the city of Porto, the friends met 20 years ago. Fernando was then a chef and Nuno a waiter at Restaurant Capa Negra II, the biggest restaurant in Porto which is over 50 years old and famous for serving traditional dishes, in particular Francesinhas. They have been known to serve over 800 Francesinhas in a day. This dish consists of two slices of bread filled with steak, sausage and ham, topped with and egg and cheese, then covered with a special sauce. At Restaurant Offline, Fernando´s Francesinhas can be served in different ways; with or without meat or eggs etc. There´s even vegetarian option. Nuno and Fernando´s goal with their restaurant is to bring a flavour of Porto to Tavira. Of course, they serve Francesinhas, but also Codfish with Cornbread, Codfish Zé

12

Do Pipo style and Bifanas Porto style. If you’ve been to Porto then you are sure to have experienced this type of food. We asked Nuno why they called the restaurant Offline. He says "Because spending time with friends and family should be appreciated… along with good food. Phones should be left offline!" We can only agree with that. Nuno first came to Tavira in 2015, looking for a new beginning. He worked consecutive seasons in various restaurants up until 2018. It was then that he decided to open his own restaurant with his long time friend Fernando. Nuno says that there are many restaurants like Offline in Porto, being here in Tavira makes it unique. The restaurant is located a few minutes walk from the train station in Tavira on Avenida Doutor Mateus Teixeira de Azevedo. Nuno chose his location because it’s in an area that’s populated all year round by residents and not totally reliant on tourists. They have a good selection of wines and a full

international bar, all at good prices. Chef Fernando is also happy to make his version of your favourite dish if it is not on their menu. Just give them a few days notice. This is a very unique offering and I´ll be trying a dish I haven´t had for years... `Prawns Pil Pil´. We hope you get a chance to visit Nuno and Fernando at Restaurant Offline. Nuno will greet you in his own very special way, with the biggest of smiles. He sees new customers as new friends. So far, his customers love the food and the service they offer. They currently have a 5 star rating on Google.

f you own a property it is good to know your rights, especially if your property is located in the countryside where boundaries of land are not always well documented. The same is true for right of way. Today we discuss ‘adverse possession’, a way to acquire property by using/occupying it for a period of time, by which the title of ownership changes without compensation to the actual owner. Not only individuals can be an adverse possessor, but also companies and the government. In order to acquire legal title of property owned by someone else, certain law requirements have to be met and the adverse possessor must have been using the property (or part thereof) exclusively as if he were the owner, out in the open for everyone to see and on a continuous basis, without permission of the actual owner for a period of 15 to 20 years with the intention to keep the property solely for oneself. This is not only the case for abandoned properties, but also applies to properties that are occupied by the actual owner or the owner’s tenant. Think of a neighbour who has begun using part of the land of the adjoining property. He may have built or extended a terrace, garage of other outbuilding on your land or has begun using it for farming. What can you do to prevent the unlawful use of your property? You can put up a fence or a gate. But if you are not going to be there for another 10 – 20 years, the fence may have been broken or worse, removed. You will need to visit your property from time to time to check if all is in order. If you find someone is making use of your property, you need to immediately dispute your neighbour’s use of your property. But if your have a good relation with the neighbour who has started using part of your land for farming, you can consider giving them permission to use the land. This has to be in writing and acknowledged by the trespasser. By claiming you are the rightful owner and acknowledgment from the trespasser, you can avoid that this person can make a successful claim to your property in the future. What may be legally permissible is not necessarily ethically right. In any case, it is better to be safe than sorry. Once adverse possession is completed, the claimant has full legal title to the property. If you have doubts about your own property rights, contact your estate agent or your lawyer in case you feel you must take legal action to protect your interests. Float your way down the Ria Formosa, Paddle out to Sea or take them on your own adventure, Altura Adventures has your SUP needs covered.

T

he East Algarve has absolutely perfect conditions for Stand Up Paddling or SUP as it is best known, with the Ria Formosa, Gilão, Guadiana and countless calm beaches, you are really spoilt for choice on where to go, all you need is the equipment, but not to worry, Willem and Fallyn Marais have everything you need. Willem and Fallyn moved to the Algarve with their two young boys from South Africa in August last year, after deciding they needed a safer place to raise the kids. Both have been active in sports since young ages with Willem having a background in Professional Martial Arts and Personal Training and Fallyn a former Pro Equestrian. Having lived by the Ocean in Cape Town they found

living by the Ocean in the Algarve a natural step and having a business linked to their active past and love for the water was an easy choice. SUP has taken the Algarve by storm over the last few years, with more boards being thrown in the water each year, it is practised by standing on a board (duh!) with the aid of a paddle (duh!) in closed or open waters, with more experienced people even doing stand up surfing! It is the perfect activity for all ages, whether you are solo or in a group. It is easy to learn, has great progression so it can always be a challenge and in the Algarve you can do it year round. It´s surprising how much of a workout it is - even a relaxed outing just exploring along the coast can burn between 305 to 430 calories per hour! Altura Adventures offers SUP and Kayak Rentals, lessons and Group tours. Mention the East Algarve magazine and get a 15% discount or if you rent 3 boards you get a fourth free! THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US...

W

... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to love and live in Olhão

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month I will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! Can We Save Olhão’s Art Walls? An open letter to João Evaristo, Veneador da Cultura, Olhão Camera Dear João, We are writing to you as a couple who appreciate and who have been deeply affected by your work. Carina and I first arrived here in Olhão in January of 2021. On our walking journeys through the back streets

40

those first days, we discovered something special, the ArtWalls of Olhão! Support from the local Camera through your offices helped to create these giant works of art to be enjoyed by everyone. Here is the article that appeared in the March 2019 issue of this magazine: “A team of Algarve graffiti artists have brought new life into an old area of Olhão by turning the dilapidated walls of a former factory into works of art. Olhão council hired Loulé-based art association Satori to turn the rundown walls on Largo da Fábrica Velha into murals depicting the history and traditions of Olhão. The artists, who worked hard for several weeks, were Pedro ‘Mistik’, ‘Gnose’ and ‘Kaset’ from Quarteira, as well as a special guest from Albufeira, ‘Dgiphi’. The town’s old canning and fishing industry and markets are all represented with an accuracy that has left citizens feeling proud. Inspiration came mostly from old photos, and the artists even say some locals have either identified themselves or other family members in the paintings. Over 500 spray cans were used to bring the project to life on Rua da Fábrica Velha.” These fabulous murals haven’t just brought

Olhão’s past to life, they have also turned what were once dilapidated buildings into a fabulous street gallery. João, we are writing you to ask for your help. I appreciated your recent email providing your phone number although we have yet to connect. Here is what I would say if we could speak to each other. I don’t know if these beautiful creations are slated for destruction, but there seems to be that possibility given the rumors suggesting a new hotel will replace the buildings hosting a good portion of the ArtWalls. Since the city has invested already to deliver these huge works of historical art, we are hoping your office will want to encourage the developers to preserve or perhaps re-create the ArtWalls that might be under threat. Carina and I are newcomers to Olhão, but the local people we’ve talked to seem to strongly believe that preserving these investments in public art is very important. We hope your municipal offices working with the investors might help to make them fully aware of just how much these art installations matter to people here. That might help create the context for creative solutions that could help protect this heritage.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Your office has already demonstrated creativity with the beautiful planters placed throughout the center. Perhaps “re-locating” some of the ArtWall depictions to local utility boxes can both preserve the public art, while improving what is now just random graffiti that too many utility boxes often display. Thank you for your past efforts. We hope this letter is received in the spirit we are hoping to deliver, that being to say thank you and to ask for your help and creativity if, indeed, the ArtWalls are threatened by the loss of the buildings that were the basis of their creation. Warm regards, Hank & Carina Ryan LUNA The streets of Olhão behind the waterfront often offer hidden gems that deliver great value. Nestled in a quiet courtyard next to the Olhão Municipal Museum and the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, there is Luna, a new cafe offering snacks and drinks delivered by local residents Sandra Cale and Lisa Watson. I am more than pleased to know this month’s column could share the happy news about Luna. Just opened April 8th, this small cafe is truly a

labour of love for these two ladies. They enjoy serving their guests and making them feel comfortable and relaxed. New offerings from their compact kitchen like English Breakfast Wraps will likely be well received. I had the tasty Bruschetta which offered great value. We’ll be back there soon for other offerings. The owners hope to create some “event evenings” going forward. Closed Sunday and Monday. Cash only please!

For our full introduction, see our first column online in the December 2021 issue. ( https://www.eastalgarvemag. com/ ) Fine Print – Questions or Comments? BAD ADVICE...

Not all advice is good and not all people are as genuine as you may think. Enjoy our 'bad advice' column from the expert we have all met, know and love... the Expat.

his month we introduce Mona de la Faye, of the East Algarve Expressive Poetry Circle. Mona, believes that poetry and story giving are not only therapeutic but expressions of a greater consciousness, which surely releases opportunity and traumatic karma? She advises that we should write one poem every day, even if it is 'challenging' and whatever its result. Mona describes herself as a 'contadora', a spiritual keeper of the old tales and a Jungian analyst with a very limited education apart from what she boasts on Facebook. She has expressed a willingness to share some of the notable pieces of her workshop activity when exploring the issue as old as time. That of love in the ExPat community. She says we will be awed and surprised by the results of her participants and she challenges you to write your own love poem. Give it a try, won't you? Yes right now! This minute! In the great words of the iconic songstress Jackie DeShannon who harmonically garbled, "What the world needs now is love, sweet love, It's the only thing that there's just too little of". Isn't it just so? How poignant! Now to proceed with the emotional content generated in her creative workshop on the universal messages of love and open heart, open wallets and even the deepest root chakras. Do you accept beauty and pathos deeper into your life? So pull up by the fire, as it crackles and burns under a sea of stars and listen to these wondrous voices of someone you might know? A poem by Kinga 'Bear'. "Is there such a sweet thing as the smell of a fragrant rose? Why, do I impose the smell of this rose, or shall I break your nose? Yes, it has been two weeks since we met. I have sight of the microwave and your pet. How lucky it is me you have met, like spring flowers, sprinkled with dew so wet. And yet, your eyes still glance at the manure in

42

which the garden hoes are set! Oh, I will make you sweat! Oh, I will make you sweat! Betray me and I will bury you in the garden wearing my sun bonnet as I dance and pirouette! Oh, aren't you glad we met? Oh, aren't you glad we met!? A brief analysis by Mona. This is a beautiful cry for the desperate need for love. I hope someone will hear her cries and change the passwords on their bank account and the keys to their home. A poem by Garry the "Mallet" "Why does my love always go wrong, Is it the sight of me on the beach in my thong? Free and easy, My essence sweats cheesy, When I walk on the beach, my sinuses are wheezy. I wish someone would hug me, Because however old my bones, At least in some quarters, some girls are easy? And though I limp with sunstroke, quite meek, The sands of time, on my calloused feet, I heard some supplements can work a real treat"? A brief analysis by Mona This is a beautiful depiction of love when you are ageing. And doesn't Garry do a fine job of painting a charming picture of the masculine libido? A poem by Juno, "Mother Gaia" "If I had a time machine of love, I would sail through time and the heavens above! The Angels would drum my coming. There'd be no wars on earth or slumdog slumming! I would smother Putin and Napoleon at my breast, And they'd be mesmerised with love and tell me I am the best! Little Adolf would dance with a spring! Donald Trump would let the light of love in! And though it's true my boundless heart is

misunderstood, And I left my children abandoned in the hood, I can only unquestioningly do a certain good! So Mother Gaia, don't you dare question me or call me a liar! So take my story ever higher! I'm awakening to a conscious fire"! A brief analysis by Mona. Isn't that such a glorious thought?! Imagine healing the world in a time machine and making everything okay through love, and yes even the evil ones who didn't receive enough! I hope everyone is as aware as Juno of their true abilities in their real life. That insight is indeed boundless. A poem by Bridgette "Totem Pole" "They say of much passing love, It is like finding a hole in a second-hand glove. Or a butterfly left flapping, sunk in a wine jug. Or bathing in a bathtub without a plug… And there have been so many, Where I have spent a pretty penny! Oh, how my heart is heavy! And still, I'd take a ride in that beat-up, Chevy"! A brief analysis by Mona. Bridgette expresses love is like a vehicle. Even if you have ridden far too many, you could find the right one, so don't give up angel, until you reach the modern stairwell to the architecture of brutalist heaven! Mona writes "I hope you have enjoyed our sharing circle offerings and that these poems have hit you straight in your beating heart. Our next sharing circle takes place on the full moon in Forte De Rato, where a drumming circle and creative writing will be pursued with a fire, marshmallows and slugging moonshine! It can become quite emotional especially if the GNR discover us"! She charges 50 Euros for the life-changing experience, per person and without exception. "See you there and with love, sweet love as always, love Mona de la Faye, do it your way, hey girl, hey"!

Moncarapachense players celebrate promotion to Liga 3

MONCARAPACHENSE WIN PROMOTION!

I

Brought to you by Chris Wright

n their final game of the season Moncarapachense travelled to Lisbon and stunned Os Belenenses, when twenty minutes after the break, a wellexecuted free kick involving Evanilson and Pedro Caeiro resulted in Nuno Silva netting, what proved to be the only goal of the game. The minnows from Moncarapacho who will now play in Liga 3, a level above their more illustrious neighbours SC Olhanense. The league requires teams to play on grass and Moncarapachense vice-President

João André, has reached an agreement with SC Olhanense for the club to play their home games at the José Arcanjo Stadium. After a brilliant campaign, coach Ivo Soares informed Moncarapachense that he would be stepping down. 60 yearold Luís Manuel, who takes over, was previously in charge at Oriental Dragon (Moita, Setúbal) and has also had experience of coaching in Sweden. Moncarapachense are now the third highest ranked team in the Algarve behind SC Portimonense (Primeira Liga) and SC Farense (Segunda Liga).

high quality England FA Over 50s national side, preparing for the upcoming home internationals, were given a stern test by EAFC at the Estádio Ferreiras, Albufeira. The visitors took the lead through Barry Hayles, former Jamaican international and Fulham FC striker, and two further goals shortly before the break sealed the issue. The final score was 5-0 to the visitors, but despite being underdogs the East Algarve players gave their all and acquitted themselves well against strong opposition. East Algarve FC also entertained Sheffield West End, on tour from South Yorkshire. In a lively first-half, the home-side took the lead at the immaculate Tavira’s Eduardo Mansinho Astroturf pitch, before Sheffield West End replied with two quick fire strikes. The visitors dominated the second period against a young but enthusiastic EAFC side with game ending in a comprehensive 8-1 victory for the Yorkshiremen.

BENFICA AND FULHAM AT ALGARVE STADIUM

Meet the multi-talented Wolfgang, dental technician and sculpture based here in the East Algarve

D

ental technician and Sculpture Wolfgang Spengler was born near Stuttgart in 1956 and finished high school. He trained as a dental technician and after completing the master-class, he decided at the age of 29 to work on his own as a freelancer. Eventually he would own his own laboratory with 10 people working for him. Although very stressful Wolfgang enjoyed the challenge. Nearly 20 years later at the age of 49, he decided to move to the Algarve where he would continue his work on his own. He bought a piece of land in Santa Catarina, Tavira and built a house with his own dental laboratory. He learned the Portuguese language through his work communicating with the local dentists. Today Wofgang continues to make dental implants, dentures, crowns and plates. He continues to work for local dentists and is registered to do so. With 50 years in the profession, Wolfgang is happy to give advice about all dental work. For a hobby, Wolfgang has always been designing, carving and sanding sculptures using different materials. Through his profession he has always had to perfect details. This shines through in his sculptures. Wolfgang´s artwork uses various stones from all over the world including Brasil, Namíbia, Turkey, Pakistan, Italy and Mexico. He also uses wood

(Orange, Carob, Olive, Cork, Eucalyptus, Almond… you name it), metal and Portuguese marble, Lime stone, Alabaster, Granite and Soapstone. Inspired by nature, Wolgang´s house is full of amazing sculptures, all made in his workshop in the sun with a sea view, much nicer than any laboratory in Stuttgart. You will find everything from Flamingos to Frogs and Camels to Chameleons. Oddly, you´ll even find the odd tooth carved out of something obscure. The place is a wonderland of colour, textures, and creativity. I received a tax bill for my IRS 2022, is this normal? I never received such a bill and this one seems too low for the income I declared in my IRS 2021, that was just submitted. The tax bill you received is not the tax bill for your tax return that was recently submitted. That tax bill is normally issued in July and the payment will be due by the end of August. The bill you just received is the payment in advance for your 2022 taxes. As you have a registered business activity, they issue a tax bill based on your previous income. PANDEMIC-FUELLED EARLY RETIREMENT

F

or many, early retirement may seem ideal. Who wouldn’t want to spend less time working and more time with their friends and family? However, if the person retiring early has not been given the choice and was instead forced into retirement, how ideal really is it? The problems with forced early retirement Since the pandemic, at least 500,000 people from ages 50 to 70 have left the British workforce. In many cases, they were forced into retiring earlier than they had wanted. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to rear its head, many of these people may experience severe problems when it comes to having enough income to fund their retirement. While not ideal, being forced into an early retirement by pandemic-related causes may not be as much of an issue for those who can afford it. However, data is indicating that this surge in early retirement is due in part to ill health. This is a cause for concern because it will greatly impact the living standards of those retiring. In addition to this, it will consequently create a significantly reduced economy for society at large. Of course, it does not help that the world has gone straight from a pandemic and into a

SER VERÃO 2022

he SER Verão 2022 – summer activities, starts this month. And we are absolutely amazed with all the activities that will occur! Once more, the summer camp accepts children between 6 and 12 years with different conditions. We will have kids with motor delays, autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, speech delays, and without disabilities, all playing together and doing the same activities. We will be doing activities all over Tavira, and we receive kids from Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim. Once more and as in the previous edition, we will practice the same prices as other typical holiday camps. And we are very proud of that, for sure! A summer camp including kids with and without disabilities, doing the same activities, and practicing different types of sports, make it very expensive. Equipment needs to be adapted, special transport for kids in wheelchairs need to be provided, therapists like speech therapist and occupational therapist need to be hired and all members of the team need to be prepared and trained to welcome all children and adapt activities

56

to their needs. We will have children who are tube fed, children that speak with gestures, children that have difficulties communicating and others that are very sensitive to sounds and textures, and we will have children that can understand everything and tolerate a lot of experiences who will develop their empathy and solidarity by playing together. The team of therapists and activity monitors have already had the basic training in life support and emergencies and a training in sexual abuse of children with disabilities and abuse prevention, as well as a course in hygiene for children with disabilities. So, we are ready! Kids be prepared… this summer will rock and you will love all the activities! We have to thank all of you who consigned your IRS last year. The monetary value that was donated served to make this holiday camp even more accessible and adapted to all children who want to get together and have fun, with structured activities, sports, in contact with nature, adventure activities, among many others. As you can see, your help makes sense, and helps us to continue with these social projects.

Be with us and together we will transform the paradigm of inclusion in the Algarve. How can you help Associação SER Igual? Associação SER Igual is a non-profit association for handicap people and with Public Utility that is helping children, teenagers and their caregivers to get better life quality and helping change the paradigm of inclusion in the east Algarve. By sharing this article, you help spread the name of SER Igual, so more people can contact us. You can sponsor one of our social projects or sponsor a child from our Association and help him/her to carry out their therapies. We will be glad to talk about our ideas and projects. WALKING INTO THE LION’S MOUTH Farah Naz

T

he bravery and resilience of the Ukrainian people, going to unimaginable lengths to protect themselves and their country, is inimitable. We see selfless people, who have joined the war as soldiers, Ukrainian mothers taking their children over the borders and returning to help in the fight. We see Russians, too taking the risk of imprisonment and speaking out against their regime. How do some people find the strength to be this brave, to pursue what they see as morally right, and to even risk their lives? It is plain from the Ukrainian plight that courage is not a scarcity as we see people clearly valuing their freedom above their lives. We admire this as we watch on and wonder if we would act in this courageous way? Do we in the West value courage, and its components - facing fear, taking risk, making decisions that we think to be morally right, persistently - as virtues? Have we let our values slip as we have become more afraid? Or is it because our values have changed that we have become more afraid? ´The most courageous act is still to think for yourself.´ Coco Chanel We have resisted little. Whilst giving into the fruits of capitalism, the alluring soporific stupor of instant gratification of - online everything - we have inadvertently given away or sacrificed our freedoms. We are less in control than we think but not just of our freedom to choose - we are less in control of our brain state and as a result, less resilient. Increasingly, our micro-fears including not feeling beautiful or smart enough, not being wealthy enough, not being loved enough are a parasitical presence in our brains creating the new pandemic of the West – Anxiety. Anxiety is a sign of the times. Trauma, too. In the world of psychology, we are increasingly working with people with traumatic responses, many of which are occurring partly

www.eastalgarvemag.com

´´I will not leave my country and my people´, is the powerful voice of many Ukrainians today as they triumph over their fear. because of our crumbling resilience. How we navigate a crisis or traumatic event depends, in part, on how resilient we are. Resilience is the ability to recover from difficult experiences and setbacks, to adapt, move forward and sometimes even experience growth. Courage builds resilience and, in turn, resilience builds courage. The Ukrainians can be a brilliant inspiration, like others, who have courageously spoken up against oppression like William Wilberforce, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Malala Yousafzai. All have acted with courage, that indubitable ´grace under pressure´. Courage seems to be an elusive quality, but it is something we can cultivate, and the more we do, the more we will become masters of our minds and be better equipped to face societal issues. Courage comes from facing challenging situations, from metaphorically walking into the lion´s mouth. And, so, instead of avoiding stressful situations we need to face them more, and even allow ourselves to feel some stress. Too often, we are afraid of feeling bad, but if we endure this bad feeling, we become more able to deal with more challenges. ´Do one thing every day that scares you´. Eleanor Roosevelt We know from neuroplasticity that we can change our brain through learning new ways and practicing them. Here are some

scientifically proven ways we can become more courageous and, in turn, develop our resilience to the challenging world we live in: Review your values and actively practice them. The more you consider your values the more you will courageously act and speak out for what you see as important. Consider doing something that scares you to strengthen the courageous pathway in your brain. Walk into the lion´s mouth. But consider doing something that fits with your values. Being courageous is about not seeing the blocks but about seeing the options. We can become more divergent in our thinking by listening to podcasts rather than watching Netflix, by spending time alone reflecting rather than connecting on social media, by listening to philosophers rather than politicians. . To consider something old fashioned like our duty to ourselves and each other and others. Reflect upon your role in your family, work, in the community. Consider doing something selfless for your family, your community, somebody you do not know every day. Build self-confidence through mastering a new skill, or identifying what you do well each day and identify how you want to do better. This pushing yourself out of your comfort-zone, is practicing courage. Feel hope and see possibility makes you want to act. If the Ukrainians thought their situation was hopeless, they would not act. How often do you decide not to act because you cannot see a way forward? We can increase hope by increasing positive emotion. Courage is contagious, the Ukrainians are encouraged by one another. To increase courage, spend time with courageous people. With courage we learn `to accept the things we (sic) cannot change; change the things we can; And wisdom to know the difference´. When we have courage - when we walk into the lion´s mouth - we can look at the uncertain future not as a source of threats, but as a land of hope and opportunity.

Health

HOW FIT IS YOUR HEART? Expert advice from Elaine Godley founder of the Perfect health HUB a self-help repository with hundreds of health resources, videos, podcasts and weekly group support

L

ast month I wrote about how to lose weight, improve energy, and reduce joint pain. These are all areas of health which are easily measured by visible signs. The lay person can see and experience benefits over time if they choose to focus on working towards improvements within their diet and lifestyle. How then can you measure and manage aspects of your health that can’t be seen or experienced on the surface? Cardiovascular health is a major problem world-wide and the leading cause of death. The chart below is provided by https:// ourworldindata.org/

The incidents of iatrogenic deaths are considered by some sources as the third leading cause of death in the United States. You will find some interesting data and evidence at http://www.ourcivilisation.com/ medicine/usamed/deaths.htm Iatrogenesis is death from the side effect of medicines and was the underlying cause of my own Mother’s death. For years, Mum had low blood pressure, which is not good, but doctors don’t fuss over it because they currently have no medication to resolve it. Low blood pressure can be as dangerous to some as high blood pressure – it's like running around on flat tyres – you get by but are not firing on all cylinders. Four top tips for good health In a recent interview between Dr Rangan Chatterjee and Cardiologist Dr Pradip

For some years, I ran cardiovascular health clinics in the UK. Clients who were on statins and medication for high blood pressure wanted me to suggest natural alternatives to their medication. The majority of my clients reduced or eliminated their medication, under guidance. The side effects of long-term medication and especially from the inter-action between drugs, most of which have never been trialled with each other, is something rarely spoken about (and definitely not by medics).

Jamnadas, the following four suggestions were put forward to lead a happy, healthy life:● Eat only whole foods in their natural state ● Reduce your food intake – eat only when hungry ● Enjoy good quality sleep for 7 hours each night ● Find pleasure in everything you do I concur with these points and add more suggestions when guiding my menteess. Whilst I no longer run clinics and see clients in person, I have developed an unusual method

of health mentoring which involves simple lab testing undertaken by the lay person at home. Dry blood analysis and hair tissue mineral analysis form part of my mentoring programme and reveal cardiovascular challenges plus many other underlying health challenges. We get to the root cause of what’s wrong with your body so that a recovery plan can be put in place. Some clients experience instant results where others may take longer. Either way, clients gain peace of mind and take control of your own health with no guesswork and experimentation. Do you take supplements? Did you know that the average monthly cost of supplements taken by people who think they are helping themselves is between 30 and over 100 Euros? By guessing and taking inappropriate supplements which don’t suit your body, you can be doing more harm than good as well as wasting money. Take calcium for example. Too much can cause your bones to snap because they become thin and brittle. Calcium has a huge impact on cardiovascular health. Calcium in the arteries is referred to as plaque. Plaque build-up causes blood clots and heart attacks. In 2015, when I had stage IV cancer, I was also given a diagnosis of osteoporosis and osteopenia. Medics wanted to inject me with regular infusions of bisphosphonates. You guessed, I refused. Instead, I take a mineral supplement that we might all consider for optimising bone strength. Conclusion In short, I highly commend taking control of your own health and wellbeing. Start by checking what’s truly going on within your body rather than concentrating on symptoms and guessing. Getting to the root cause makes sense, saves, time, money, provides peace of mind, and will increase your chances of living a longer, happier, healthier life. What’s not to like?! ne of the simplest ways to change your look is with a lash lift and tint. After the quick, painless, and affordable treatment, your eyes will look instantly brighter and more open, making you seem more youthful and awake. Plus, your lashes will get that sexy curl and flutter you’ve always wanted! Think of it like permanently curling your lashes and applying mascara that never wears off. What is a Lash Lift and Tint? A lash lift-and-tint treatment involves two separate processes, both designed to give you beautiful, fluttery eyelashes for weeks. The lash lift mimics the effect of an eyelash curler. It makes your lashes bend upwards, leaving them looking longer, and your eyes more open and bright. Meanwhile, a lash tint is similar to a brow tint – or applying several coats of mascara. It makes your eyelashes look darker, thicker, and fuller. It’s particularly striking on those with naturally blonde or red lashes. Lash Lift Before and After The natural shape, direction, and thickness of your eyelashes will determine how dramatic your results are. If your lashes lie almost flat – or even point downwards – you’ll see a big difference after having a lifting treatment. Most women notice their eyes look more open, brighter, younger, and more ‘awake’ following their lash lift. Additionally, the eyelashes themselves will appear far longer, fuller, and more defined. How Does Lash Lift Work and How Long Does it Last? I will discuss the final result you want – for example, extra curved lashes, a cat’s eye effect, or a defined, fanned-out look. Next, I will cleanse and separate your top and bottom lashes. The top lashes will be attached to a silicone patch on your eyelid and combed into place. Then, an eye-safe perming solution is applied. The process works similarly to a hair perm – the solution breaks down the bonds in the eyelash, allowing it to change shape. After a few minutes, a setting solution will be applied to seal in the curl. The results last around six to eight weeks, depending on your lash growth cycle. Lash Lift Aftercare Avoid water, steam, eye make-up, and make-up remover for the first 24 hours after your lift. As with any perming treatment, exposure to moisture and humidity straight afterward can ruin the result. After 24 hours have elapsed, you can treat your lashes as usual – there’s no need to change your make-up routine or stop cleansing your face. Some professionals advise using a conditioning treatment like coconut oil to keep your lashes healthy and nourished post-lift. For more info contact Alegria Beauty Salon

Gardens

7thatPlants Love the Sun

Even in the peak of summer, there’s no reason your garden can’t be as colorful, vibrant, and lush as your springtime landscape. In fact, you can keep your garden blooming all season long by adding these stunning, heat-loving plants to your beds, borders, and containers as soon as the mercury starts rising. While most are perennials in mild climates, they can be planted as annuals to replace springtime varieties that struggle in the heat.

Lantana

As a native to the tropics, lantana likes it hot and humid, and grows best in moist, well-draining soil (but can withstand drought conditions). It thrives in the sun, especially afternoon sun, and blooms year-round in tight clusters of red, orange, yellow, pink, or white. The flowers are ideal for planting along the perimeters of vegetable gardens, as they’re irresistible to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Place them near crops that need to be pollinated, such as squash and melons.

Cosmos

These tall, showy annuals with silky, daisy-like flowers are native to Mexico, able to take the heat and the drought— thus making them ideal for desert gardens or areas with poor soil. In fact, soil that is too rich will make them weak-stemmed and floppy, so plant them in beds you’ve long neglected if you want to inject a lot of color in your space with little to no maintenance.

Lemon Verbena This hardy, sun-loving herb hails from South America but is now grown around the world. It’s said that in summer, Victorian women used to find relief from the sweltering heat by packing lemon verbena leaves in their handkerchiefs and inhaling the sweet, citrusy aroma. Nowadays, you can simply plant lemon verbena near your doors and windows for a whiff of the pleasing scent. It needs only weekly watering with the Gilmour Flexogen Super Duty Hose and a watering nozzle once established, and puts out pretty white flowers in late summer to early fall.

Marigold

Marigolds appear on almost every list of ideal warm-weather flowers, and for good reason: they’re classic (especially as container plants and bedding plants), easy to grow, come in cheerful tones of orange and yellow, and bloom in summer and fall when many other plants are griping about the heat. Plant them in well-draining soil in full sun, and water well at the root zone, allowing the soil to dry a bit between watering.

Salvia

Salvias (also known as sages) are long-blooming, deerresistant, easy to grow, and easy to care for. Being native to the Mediterranean, salvias are heat-tolerant, prefer full sun, and thrive with minimal summer watering, making them ideal for dry gardens and drought-friendly landscapes. The most striking salvias have masses of showy blue or purple flowers that bloom all summer long and attract a variety of pollinators.

Sedum

Geranium

Geraniums have always been known to tolerate heat better than most plant species, but the recent development of hybrid geraniums has meant varieties that can take on tough climates like Texas and Arizona, where 100-plus-degree summers are the norm. To keep them healthy, however, they need consistent moisture and should be watered with a Thumb Control Watering Nozzle when the first 2 inches of soil are dry. They’re also happier in the long run if given dappled afternoon shade in the height of summer.

Sedums (stonecrops) are a group of succulents that are as lowmaintenance as they come. Resistant to drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil, sedums survive in less-thanideal conditions by storing moisture in their thick, succulent leaves. These qualities make them excellent choices for arid climates and rock gardens that still want a bright infusion of color when the dense clusters of flowers appear in summer. Sedums don’t like having wet feet, so make sure to put them in well-draining soil in full sun.

Bringing Pickleball to VRSA

W

If you build it they will come... By Nancy Whiteman

hile Denise and I are both avid golfers we used to play pickleball more frequently than we played golf. We would often say, “We play golf 3 or 4 times a week. We play pickleball only on the days that end in ‘y’.” My competitive pickleball days ended a few years ago following complications of knee surgery. Denise’s pickleball days seemed to end when we moved to Portugal. But she persisted… Last week we introduced 3 new players to the game. What is pickleball? As we started playing the sport in 2007, were active members of the USAPA (USA Pickleball Association), played in dozens of tournaments in the States, and played in Thailand, Scotland, and the Netherlands…we assume everyone knows about the game. But for those that don’t, here is your primer: Pickleball is a court sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a court the size of a badminton court, over a net that is just a little lower than a tennis net. The sport was invented by a Washington state legislator on Bainbridge Island, 57 years ago. He wanted an easy to learn, fun sport that all generations could enjoy together. Pickleball went crazy in the States as baby boomers flocked to retirement communities. As the court took up less space than a tennis court, many developers included courts in their communities. The sport was easy to learn and gentler on seniors’ joints. Over 4 million Americans play pickleball today and it is also played in 46 other countries. In roughly 2015, we saw more and more younger people participating in the sport. Many were former NCAA Div I tennis players. The sport was transformed and now has two new “professional tours”. to Portugal. Denise tried to find a tennis/ padel club that would consider introducing the sport…but no luck. She even took a padel lesson! Perhaps she would enjoy this sport as much as she liked pickleball. But nope.. she found the additional weight of the paddle unwieldy and hitting off the walls was not her thing. She tried to convince her padel instructor to try pickleball… but then lockdown hit (in earnest) and the instructor’s interest fizzled with time. Twice Denise drove 90-minutes to Vau to play pickleball indoors. The group was primarily French-speaking immigrants and while welcoming, the drive was just too long. Hello VRSA We thought there might be a possibility of introducing pickleball in VRSA for three reasons: (1) there is a large tennis/padel club that is lightly used, (2) on the roof of our new home we could squeeze in a full-size pickleball court, and (3) VRSA is the home of a huge, well-equipped sports complex that is a training facility for European Olympic athletes. Within days of settling in VRSA Denise took a trip to the tennis club. It didn’t take long for her to get the message. She was told clearly and directly, “This is not possible. This is a tennis and padel club!” Strike one. But each night before retiring we chanted our mantra: “if you build it …. they will come.” Then the city’s Pombaline architectural standards required us to add a fake tile roof to the front of our building which takes up about 7’ of our rooftop deck space. There went the full-size pickleball court on the roof. Strike two. We had to find a way to utilize the sports complex facilities. But how? As it turns out, I was hanging out in the Continente bom dia parking lot with Onix, while Denise shopped inside. Behind the store, I discovered a huge covered court. It had 4 basketball hoops and what appeared to be soccer nets. I anxiously awaited Denise’s return. When she exited the store I dragged her breathlessly to the rear of the store. There it was…pickleball nirvana. We stopped at the reception desk of the Sports Complex the next day. We learned the area was called “semi coberto” (partially

covered) and was available to rent. We sent an email with a YouTube video, to the facility director. Within days we had permission to rent the facility on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 13:00. We paid 240€ to rent the facility for the month of March. “If you build it…they will come.” Our first week we had two people that had played a few times before. We had brought a pickleball net with us when we moved to Portugal. Denise also had packed a large box that contained balls and paddles. I sent a WhatsApp message to the Americans that participated in the language group. We also placed a few events on Facebook groups. The first week we had the people shown above. Only two, besides Denise, had ever played the sport before. But we offered lessons and encouragement and by the end of the first two-hour session, everyone was able to play on the court. We continue to post on Facebook groups and encourage those that have participated to bring a friend. In the last two weeks, we have added 5 people to the group. We can easily fit 3 courts in the area we have rented. We own a second net and are working to have it brought to us from the States. If we can get 10 people that participate regularly we can charge a modest fee (no more than 5€ a session) to cover the court costs and create a kitty for paddles, balls, and another net. Only time will tell. This past week a physical education teacher from the local school stopped by. He watched for a bit and then asked if we would be willing to introduce the sport to his students. After the Easter break, Denise and I will be taking our equipment and limited Portuguese language skills to the local school. Personally, I love teaching kids! Se o construir … eles virão (If you build it… they will come). Update: We recently moved play to the Tennis/Padel Club in VRSA. Yes, the very same club that originally told us no. During our very first session, several padel players decided to give it a try and LOVED it. For more information please email ncwhiteman@gmail.com
