INDIAN FARMER

Welcome...

VERONA

... to your March issue. Now that Spring is upon us, we thought we'd inform you about the native wildflowers popping up all over the countryside. I'm always astounded at the amount of Rock Roses that appear seemingly overnight at this time of the year. Also in this issue we visit the stunning Rural Hotel Conversas de Alpendre, a truly unique place located in Santa Rita, perfect for visiting friends or family to stay. We also meet Hugo, the jewellery designer from Monte Gordo who has launched his own brand and hoping to make it known internationally. While in Monte Gordo, we enjoyed watching the sun set from one of our favourite places; Bar Chiringuito do Rui. This plus much more, including news, finance and health news. As ever, we welcome your comments, please email us on info@eastalgarvemag.com

First Iberian lynxes released into wild in Algarve

C

the wild, spread out across the Vale do Guadiana, Alentejo and Algarve regions. Nine Iberian lynxes were born in the Algarve in 2021, and the ICNF hopes numbers will increase. The institute attributes this success to several factors, namely the “collaboration of landowners and managers of estates and hunting areas, the sustainable management of territory, the abundance of wild rabbits, the favourable attitude from locals regarding the presence of the animal and the connectivity of the lynx population in Vale do Guadiana with other populations in Spain,” which ICNF describes as “fundamental to increasing genetic variability.”

Castro Marim unveils strategy for water conservation

astro Marim Council has announced a series of investments to reduce water waste in the borough. The local authority is installing telemetry equipment to control how much water is used at municipal green areas, it announced in a statement to the press. In other words, a total of 125 irrigation controllers and five antennas/outdoor stations for communication are being installed at approximately 70 green spaces in Altura and Castro Marim. The council says around €250,000 is being spent in hopes that water resources are managed much more efficiently and effectively, identifying real water losses and even cases

6

Lynxes started being released into the wild in Portugal in 2014. The Vale do Guadiana region – which encompasses the boroughs of Mértola, Serpa and other areas – was selected as part of the LIFE Iberlince project and has seen the lynx population expand naturally to other boroughs such as Alcoutim, Castro Verde and Beja. ICNF adds that the reintroduction of the species is a “medium to long term programme, which aims to establish a viable population and maintain genetic flux with other lynx populations,” providing the species with “favourable” conditions to reproduce.

of water meter tampering. The council is also creating ‘Zonas de Medição e Controlo’ (Measurement and Control Areas) in the municipal water supply systems for human consumption to “protect and improve the management of water resources in the borough”. “We are working to make the borough more sustainable, resilient and able to adapt to the consequences of climate change which we have been witnessing, especially in the Algarve, with the increase of average annual temperatures, longer periods of drought and rising sea level,” said deputy mayor Filomena Sintra.

wo Iberian lynxes were released into the wild in the Algarve for the first time on Thursday afternoon, 24th February. ‘Sismo’ and ‘Senegal’ (male and female) were born at the El Acebuche reproduction centre in Andalusia, Spain, and were set free in the eastern Algarve municipality of Alcoutim, the Portuguese Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF) announced. This brings the Iberian lynx number living in the wild in the Algarve to 22, the institute added. The reintroduction of this endangered species into the wild started seven years ago. Around 200 are now living in

f you flick back to our October 2021 edition, you will see we had the great pleasure to cover the newly opened and family owned Charm Hotel Colégio located in Tavira. At the time we met with and interviewed José Carlos, husband to Cristina, the father of Marta and grandfather of Francisco. It was mentioned that the Colégio Charm Hotel was the second hotel the family had opened, their first hotel, run by Marta, is located in the little town of Santa Rita and we were invited to have a look. This month we decided to make good on the invitation extended then and visit Conversas de Alpendre. Conversas de Alpendre, once a farmhouse, sits on an acre of land that has now been converted into a small boutique hotel surrounded by orchards. As the name suggests, many conversations have been held on the various cosy porches created and dotted all over the premises. 5 years ago Marta, with the help of her siblings, managed to convince their father and mother to leave Lisbon, move to the Algarve and go into semi-retirement. José Carlos and his wife never wanted to compromise on family, family is the most important element in their lives. It was soon agreed that a small hotel which could become a big house when the family gathered was the way forward. When the farm was bought, extensive renovations and expansion were needed. Marta, was highly pregnant, working as a pharmacist and was based in Lisbon with her husband Tiago, an IT specialist. Not wanting for their child to grow up living in a big city, the two handed their notice in, moved to the Algarve and continued the project Marta convinced her parents to start. Time would reveal the winning combination of two generations coming together, with creativity, dedication and family being at the heart of this collaboration.

The hotel with 10 rooms adjoined to the main house and 3 special spaces in the garden, has been open and running for 5 years. Francisco, now 5 and a half, has been dubbed the Little Boss as he was the catalyst and inspiration for many of the outside spaces. A smile spreads across the faces of the family as they begin to tell us the story of the last space they built in the garden, a treehouse. Cristina is a doting grandmother and thought it would be wonderful to have a treehouse for her grandson to play in, the rest of the family found the idea so intriguing they decided to build a treehouse for their guests. The treehouse is located in the back of the garden, in an old Alfarroba tree, a more accurate way to describe it is, it is a house lifted off the ground and built around an ancient Alfarroba tree. The tree continues to grow, unharmed and not bothered by the house that happens to share the space. The other 2 spaces in the garden are equally impressive, a log cabin, so inconspicuous it could be mistaken for a pile of decorative logs. The giveaway is the private pool in the back, same for the area the family has called the warehouse. This space was once indeed a warehouse, now it is the most beautiful cabin also with its own plunge pool. If you are looking to stay somewhere unlike anywhere else, where you are welcomed and greeted as family, where hospitality comes first and where style does not comprise comfort, then we highly recommend this amazing place. Tucked away in the countryside, with views of the Ria Formosa, is a special space containing many special spaces. Ps. The Little Boss did get his very own treehouse, modelled on the one for grownups. TRENDS Meet Hugo Alexandre de Oliveira Da Silva, contemporary jewellery designer and an Alfa at heart

A

round this time last year we visited and wrote about the family owned and run Gemas do Mundo in Monte Gordo. We had the great pleasure of meeting Hugo, who told us all about the family business and he revealed that he had his own jewellery line. A year later we went back to catch up with him and find out all about what he is doing and where he wants to go. Hugo has been working with jewellery since he was very young. My parents have been in the business for many years and have always had a precious and semi-precious stone store. I started making my own jewellery because I had a portfolio of customers that needed repairs and then they wanted some changes to the pieces and that's when I thought "why not make my own brand?", joining their needs and their desires. With the repairs and changing and replacement of parts I saw a lot of different styles and brands. I saw where and what needed improvement, building and learning from their mistakes and making sure customers receive quality for the right price. My first original piece was a bracelet with a high clasp. This was the start of

14

many more to follow, in 2018 SocialAlfa was born. The name SocialAlfa and the logo of the wolf fit the brand well, we wanted a strong symbol for the brand's identity. Together with a friend of mine we started to imagine what characterised us. We saw that we were sociable people and with a certain leadership character, we thought of various animals, hence the wolf. And in the pack there is an Alpha wolf who is characterised as a genuine leader, empathetic and respectful, who leads the family and the rest of the wolves with kindness, generosity and love, many men identify with this. There are many designers creating and brands emerging in the jewellery section. However, competition has not been an issue because I already had my portfolio of customers who were looking for other products and quality that they could not find in other brands. The fact that they liked my product line encouraged me to continue. The brand's objective is to create lines for any style, from the simplest to the most daring and, in this way, reach every man. SocialAlfa imprints contemporaneity on its jewellery through the freedom of forms, while remaining timeless and sophisticated in its character.

Currently the line consists of bracelets, watches, necklaces and chains, using semiprecious stones, leather, steel, wood and nylon. In the future, I will launch a line of rings and also start working with a silver line. There are times when I receive special requests for bespoke pieces of jewellery, we try our best to please and satisfy our customers and we always meet what they are looking for. My biggest motivation is knowing that I have the potential to make my brand become famous, in addition to nationally, also recognised internationally and reach the level of the most well-known brands. Another motivation is also the people who have followed me and believed in this project, my great friend and brand photographer Lúcio Rodrigues, my best friend and my girlfriend. V VIRGILIO

ARTIST OF THE MONTH:

RAPOSO 20

irgilio Raposo was born in Lagos, Algarve in 1955. An inward looking artist, Virgilio expresses in his work not only the beauty of the world we live in, but also a serenity and infinity in the better purpose of man. Basically self-taught, his work shows a surprising quality and understanding of colour. This is even more surprising when one considers that his subject matter is usually the natural coast line of the Algarve, which, because of the strength in the actual light, is extremely hard to recapture on canvas. s with most investment decisions there is no straightforward answer. Both rental strategies have their own pros and cons. Short Term Rentals (STR) are those available to tenants for an overnight stay, a week, or another limited period of time, but not exceeding 28 days. These properties are completely furnished and ready to use. Popular platforms for short term rentals these days are Booking, HomeAway and Airbnb. The idea behind Long-Term Rentals (LTR) is to buy a property purely as an investment in order to rent to a permanent tenant for a much longer period of time, e.g. 1 year or longer. With the rise in tourism in Portugal, making income from Short Term Rental has become extremely popular from a financial point of view. Over the past few years investors and homeowners alike preferred the STR market as the weekly rate in summer often is equal or higher than the monthly rent while at the same time benefiting from a more favourable tax rate. The State’s regulated regime for STR called Alojamento Local (AL) started originally with a very low tax regime. A large number of buyers who made their property available for the STR market were initially taxed at 3.75 % of gross revenues. In the meantime the STR market has lost some of its advantages. Recent legislation has forced a couple of bureaucratic changes and effective tax on gross income increased to 8.75%. In addition - and not many people are aware of it - owners who have an AL licence and who later remove their property from the rental AL scheme are liable to pay capital gains tax, whether they are selling their property or not. Long-term rentals are taxed at a flat rate of 28%. A recent tax law foresees a reduction in the current IRS income tax rate for longer dated rental contracts, e.g. 14% for contracts between 10 and 20 years and 10% for contracts of 20 years and longer. To help owners make a decision which rental scheme works better for them, we have put together a list of pros and cons which can be helpful to make an informed decision as to what will meet their needs. We suppose that the tax burden of both regimes will almost equalise in the future, but there are other arguments that are decisive for one or the other regime. Long Term Rental - The pros One of the main advantages of Long-Term Rentals is to have a stable cash flow, since renters pay the same amount of money every month over an agreed period of time. Even if the income is less than you can achieve with STR for some homeowners this gives peace of mind. LTR involves less paperwork and less hassle and is less time consuming and the owner can focus on other activities. Depending on how much you charge as your security deposit at the start of the contract, most long-term tenants will take more care of your property in comparison to short term tenants. Security deposits will be returned at the end of the contract unless there is damage to the property. Management is less frequently needed (but more urgent, and often outside of office hours when needed) and the operational costs are relatively low. Utilities are not

www.eastalgarvemag.com

included in the rent. The property can be rented fully furnished or empty in which case you have less wear and tear as tenants bring their own belongings. Long Term Rental – the cons Renting to a long-term tenant can be risky. You can get great tenants but sometimes you will be counting the days until they leave. If you rent your property long term, you have the risk of delayed payment. Some tenants can be demanding while others may refuse to pay the rent due to financial problems. In addition, if a tenant does not want to vacate the property you must go through an often painful legal procedure of eviction. If you decide during a LTR to sell the property it can become a long process for the owner in case the tenant does not want to move out before the contract expires. Short term Rentals: Pros Short-term rentals offer you loads of flexibility as a landlord. You can use the property for your own holidays while renting it out for the remainder of the year. Property management gives you the option of a hands-off experience as a landlord. You can leave all aspects of managing your rentals to the professionals while enjoying your rental income. Short-term rentals tend to produce in general a higher income especially in combination with long stays during the winter period. Long stays can be billed at the lower STR tax rate and most of the time the guest will pay the utilities during their stay. Depending on the location you can rent out your property on weekly or nightly rates. The average

annual income can be much higher compared to long-term rentals, especially when your property is located in a prime location. Holiday rental portals make it easy for the owner to find renters and potential damage is usually covered by the insurance and/or security deposit of the portal. If you create your own website for your property you could market it yourself. Short Term Rental – cons The more clients you have at your rental property, the more potential there will be for wear and tear. If you do not want to appoint a property management company to look after the property, it can end up being a full-time job. Demand for short term rental is seasonal; there will be times that your property is vacant and no income is generated. Operational costs are higher than with a long let, since you are responsible for all the utility bills, the cleaning and laundry services. With STR owners have to provide a lot more in the way of amenities than with LTR. Wireless internet is in the meantime standard if you want to stay competitive and the property must be fully equipped and furnished. Under current legislation the bureaucracy for AL vacation rentals has increased and owners need to register with the local authorities and report to SEF (immigration and border control) as well as making rental receipts with AT (tax department) approved billing software and the reporting of the monthly SAFT file (digital file with consolidated rental income), quarterly VAT reporting if income is above Euro 12.500 in the preceding year and in some areas of the country

the collection and payment of tourist tax. It is evident that both options offer different pros and cons. If you prefer stable income then the best is to go for long-term rental. If you want to maximise your return on investment and/or make use of the property yourself, then shortterm rental is the better option. In particular for vacation rentals we strongly recommend hiring a property management company, a real estate lawyer and an accountant to help you do your taxes properly. In order to achieve your goals you need to make sure to choose the right location for your investment property. appiness, we are taught that it comes from within. While this is so very true, I cannot imagine or envision a better place to feel happiness than in Monte Gordo at a little beach cafe, Chiringuito do Rui. This is the place encapsulating Portugal effortlessly, a gentle breeze, sun in your face, sand between your toes, an ice cold beverage in your hand, brilliant music in the background and with a view of an endless beach and sunshine dancing on the surface of the sea. If this isn’t enough, the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the cafe owners is unrivalled. Rui, his wife Manuela, daughter Claudia

and son Rui-Pedro will truly make you feel as though you are among friends and have found a place where you can be yourself, relax and allow yourself to feel at ease and be reminded of how fortunate you are to be in such a wonderful part of the world. Having been in the cafe business for 35 years Rui knows what customers want, a glass of wine that is full and food that tastes good without costing a fortune. 650 YEARS OF UNBROKEN FRIENDSHIP

(by Chris Wright)

T

his month, six-hundred-andfifty years ago, Portugal and Britain commenced talks that resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Tagilde on the 10th July 1372. The friendship between England and Portugal goes back even further to 1147 when English crusaders helped King Alfonso capture Lisbon from the Muslims. The oldest ongoing alliance in the world has stood the test of time despite coming close to breaking point on various occasions. The two competed fiercely for land and influence in India and south-east Asia and for forty years in the mid 19th century the Royal Navy had Portuguese slave ships in its sights when attempting to stop the slave trade to Brazil. The alliance endured and was essential to Wellington’s peninsula campaign. In the 1890s trouble erupted in Africa and the British Ultimatum forced the retreat of Portuguese military forces from areas which had been claimed by Portugal on the basis of historical discovery and recent exploration, but which the Britain claimed on the basis of effective occupation. Portugal had attempted to claim a large area of land between its colonies of Mozambique and Angola including most of present day Zimbabwe. It soured

36

Anglo-Portuguese relations for some time, although when in the late 1890s Portugal underwent a severe economic crisis, its government sought a British loan. However, with the outbreak of the Boer war, Britain sought support from Portugal and signed an Anglo-Portuguese Declaration in 1899. So the alliance endures and was never more valuable during WW2 when Britain was accorded air and naval facilities in the Azores to help in the desperate battle of the Atlantic against German submarines. The treaty was last invoked in 1982 during the Falklands war. The treaty was signed at Tagilde, in the municipality of Vizela in the Braga district, by King Ferdinand of Portugal and representatives of John of Gaunt, son of English king Edward III. The following year Edward III and King Ferdinand and Queen Eleanor

of Portugal solemnly pledged “perpetual friendships, unions and alliances” between the two seafaring nations. “It is cordially agreed that if, in time to come, one of the kings or his heir shall need the support of the other, or his help, and in order to get such assistance applies to his ally in lawful manner, the ally shall be bound to give aid and succour to the other, so far as he is able (without any deceit, fraud, or pretence) to the extent required by the danger to his ally’s realms, lands, domains, and subjects; and he shall be firmly bound by these present alliances to do this.” Friendship and peace made for booming trade and British pioneers set up in the sundrenched Douro valley to produce a drink that has delighted the English palate and been passed from right-to-left at almost every grand dinner for centuries. English names still dominate the port trade and boast a veritable heritage in the historic port houses, though now only the Symingtons can trace their origins back to those early days of glory. Now with the end of the pandemic in sight, Portugal will be hoping that millions of British tourists will once again descend on the Algarve to further cement the bond of friendship between these two great nations.

THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US...

W

... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to live in and love Olhão

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month I will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! Explore the Olhão Ria Formosa Natural Park Salt Pans! Last year, on a January afternoon, we plunked down our deposit to begin the home purchase process. As we stood on the roof of our apartment building taking in this view,

38

I knew we were captured. This beautiful spot, just steps out our front door, is in fact the original inspiration for beginning our monthly column! The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches along the eastern Algarve coast for 179 kilometres, from the Spanish border to Faro. The quiet waters and easily accessible barrier islands (and ocean beaches), connecting to the open sea are just a short ferry ride away. Here in Olhão, you can easily explore a part of this wonderful land/ waterscape that always delivers peaceful and inspirational walkability! From the Olhão Mercado, head west along the esplanade towards the “Vista Ilhas Center“ (Island View Center). This new commercial and gastronomic collection of 26 separate businesses is just now being completed and is just past the boat loading ramp. Continue along the sidewalk skirting the parking area and then dip down to the “flats” where, during low tide twice each day, you’ll witness clam diggers hard at work as the waters drain

to provide muddy access to their daily catch. At high tide, and especially during early morning sunrise and evening sunsets, the feeling of peace and relaxation while hiking these paths is just wonderful. Most mornings, pink flamingos gather in one pond area, foraging for the protein under water which brings about their pink colour. (worth a google…) This sublime series of walking paths is never crowded and the serenity it delivers has even inspired some to anonymously police the paths ensuring there is a minimum of litter. You can walk along a series of well tread paths circling the ponds that

Delicia de Olhão Delicia de Olhão is located on what we call “restaurant row” just east of the twin Olhão Mercado buildings. Since 2010, they have been serving both locals and tourists. We have never seen this establishment without plenty of customers inside and on the terrace, weather permitting. This place is dangerous! I mean that in a good way. Please understand, we walk to follow the example of Mediterranean goat herders tending their flocks who seem to live forever. One thing those goat herders surely lack is the abundance of tasty food choices here in Olhão that we just cannot get enough of! Looking into the glass cases filled with an incredible selection of made from scratch treats, the level of temptation threatens to dismantle even the most dedicated diets. You might be best to indulge your dessert desires after enjoying a long salt pans walk offered above! Pictured here with a few of their creations are Manuel Rumor, owner, together with co-workers Iris Silva and Andreia Ferreira.

lead around to meet the stockpile the salt pans deliver. From there either aim right to the small road leading back to Olhão, or if you are in a shopping mood, left through the railroad crossing to either Continente or Lidl just steps away. A third alternative if you turn west is the “EcoRide'' biking and walking path that continues for a few kilometres to the western border of Olhão. That path will connect with the soon, we hope, to be completed bike path all the way to Faro.

Questions or Comments? Write us at hankryan2003@yahoo.com We choose to focus on businesses here in Olhão where we have actually been customers first. Any future advertising from these businesses that supports Eastern Algarve Magazine is purely coincidental :-) Note: No goats were harmed during the production of this column :-)

Health

IF ONLY I HAD… My deepest and most painful regret is not spending more time with my dear brother before a tragic accident killed him. By Farah Naz

I

regret, too, not telling my dear father that he was the bravest of men, shamefully not giving more to homeless people I walked past on my daily commutes when living in London, not speaking up more against loud mouthed bigots, trying too hard to fit in, not allowing myself to dare to be brilliant, not travelling more before the pandemic and much more. Some of my regrets bundle up under the category of allowing my fears to stop me from living life – from doing more, saying more, acting more, thinking more, loving more, laughing more, dreaming more, risking more. And some regrets bundle up under the category of all the wrong and hurtful things I have done to others. “Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.” Les Brown So, you see, I have my share of regrets, but perhaps the most damaging regret still to this day, is burying some of those regrets so deep that I have spans of time where I have convinced myself that I regret nothing! ´Non je ne regrette rien´ (translates to ´I have no regrets´). Charles Dumont But wait a minute isn’t it good not to have regrets? Not to live in the past? Aren’t we supposed to live in the moment? Actually, regret can give us a lesson in life, it can feed the present, it reminds us that life is short and that opportunities may be once in a lifetime. So, in this way, regret can be utilised to propel us into living a life well lived. Indeed, a life without regret would most likely be a life where we will continue to repeat self-destructive and harmful behaviours. ´Life, if well lived, is long enough´. Lucius Annaeus Seneca I don’t mean to suggest that we should ruminate or live inside our regrets, especially as we all know that going down the rabbit hole of ruminations can lead to depressive and anxious thinking. Instead of ruminating, we can practice the first lesson in psychological intervention which is acceptance. Because the more we accept our feelings the more in control of them we become. Taking these thoughts forward, here are some tips that can free us from the rigid thinking that leads us to getting stuck in a joyless,

40

regretful life: Acceptance that we are not our ideal selves Starting with acceptance is key to all selfgrowth, if we don’t accept truthfully where we are, who we are, who we are not, what we did, what we didn’t do – we find ourselves in a battle with ourselves which only results in NO action, NO change, only internal pain. Once we accept that perhaps we are not where we want to be, only then we can move forwards. Accurately labelling what you're feeling allows the appropriate response and learning When you allow yourself to be overwhelmed by feelings of regret because you did not do this and did not do that, we might over dramatise. Like - ´I feel bad because I never told dad what he most needed to hear, I am a lousy daughter. ´ (This generalising of the emotions can lead to self-loathing, self-attack and a feeling of helplessness.) Accepting the feelings of regret instead of denying them, acknowledging and accurately labelling what you are actually feeling allows you to specifically pinpoint the regret and identify the learning for the future. And so, we might say instead: “Í am feeling remorse and sadness because I didn’t tell Dad what a brave man he was.“ This leaves space for the thought that you are still a good enough daughter, and an acknowledgment that there are other things you may have said. There may be an appropriate sense of sadness and loss but this feels manageable with time. And then the learning that can take place: Perhaps now you could take the time to reflect upon things that you would like to say, and what you think your loved ones may need to hear from you? Perhaps this year you might send birthday cards to them and use the opportunity to say these things. And maybe then, you can feel grateful for the learning from the past regret. Don’t avoid and Don’t self-attack - Face your regrets with understanding and a kind heart Too often, we kick ourselves hard for our perceived mistakes, forgetting that mistakes are an inevitability of life. We can trap

1

2

3

ourselves in the cycle of regret, by repeating self-attack - “I'm a bad person because I haven’t cared enough for people worse off than me.” We could seek to understand and ask ourselves instead: Why did I walk past all those homeless people? Was it because there was too much pain to tolerate every day? Was it because I had read a derogatory and bigoted article about the vast amounts of money homeless people were earning a day, at that time? Remind yourself to be kindhearted to you and not a tyrant that demands perfection! Bounce back from your mistakes. Give yourself understanding. Find new possibilities and dare to repair Instead of punishing yourself, look for the learning. We can live in yesterday or we can accept the regret and plan for new possibilities, new ways, and move through the regret and look forward. “Stay away from what might have been and look at what can be.” ~Marsha Petrie Sue It's such a futile task to punish yourself when you could repair the damage instead. If you have done wrong by someone, or hurt someone inadvertently, then accept and dare to repair the damage caused by your mistake. Make a plan and take the steps to make amends. Give yourself time Emotions stick around if we avoid, selfattack, ruminate, repress, allow yourself to be upset appropriately, and give yourself time to allow the emotion to fade away. Some regrets will take more time to accept and to work themselves out of our system before we can feel energised to move forward. And a final reminder: a life well lived is actually a life full of mistakes.

BREATHWORK

P

eter Winch practices and teaches breathwork, much like meditation it helps people to really connect to themselves on an even deeper level. He said: “It can greatly reduce the stress, worries and anxiety that we suffer from in our lives as well as giving us a heightened sense of clarity and focus therefore helping our mind to think more clearly and make better decisions. “It takes you on a beautiful path, aligning the body, mind and soul and creating more balance, calmness and peace.” Peter, who comes from Birdham, originally discovered breathwork two years ago when he first travelled to Bali and became fascinated by ‘the power of this healing tool’ and its many benefits. He decided to base himself in Bali to further his knowledge. The first session he did was a style known as ‘rebirthing breathwork’. He said: “After about 20 minutes of breathing with this form I noticed my breath pattern changing on its own and slowly becoming deeper and faster without my intention. “This was followed by an intense and almost overwhelming feeling of emotion and what was intriguing to me was that I wasn’t aware of where it came from as my head was very clear of any thoughts.” Peter explains how he carried on with the breath under the careful guidance of the facilitator despite being a little fearful. “Suddenly I had what is known in the breathwork world as a ‘release’ which is when you breathe through any resistance you are feeling until the emotion rises and then allow that feeling to come out, which for me was tears, however, in some cases yelling or screaming can also greatly help the individual” he said. “After the session, I felt a huge wave of positive emotion, I guess like a big weight had been lifted and this in turn made everything seem so much clearer. I decided then that I needed to train in this and help others.” The sessions are currently being held online and are donation based, these can be small groups or private one to one sessions. Each session lasts between an hour to an hour 15 depending on how many people are attending. It starts with a ten minute introduction followed by a short grounding meditation and then 40 minutes of breathing practice. At the end is a further five to ten minutes of discussion giving those involved the opportunity to share any thoughts or feelings that came up during or at the end of the process. Peter explained: “The sessions are held in a loving and supportive environment allowing for whatever trapped emotions or blockages the body needs to release or let go of to come freely. “This will all in turn help us to form an even stronger connection to ourselves, the earth, the universe and the beautiful people that surround us in our everyday lives! “During these present times where stress and anxiety levels sometimes run high, breathwork can have a huge amount of benefits.” For more information, you can email Peter on winchpeter82@gmail.com

DATSUN 240Z H

TopGear.com reviews this 1970's classic

ow very dare you. This is one of the most important sports cars of all time: the Nissan 240Z. Or the Datsun Fairlady Z(ee), if you’re of an American persuasion. Nissan’s first Z-car didn’t just propel it from its status as an also-ran maker of worthy whitegoods to a renowned big player. It also gave the pompous Brits and lackadaisical Italians a bloody good kick up the arse in the school of ‘building everyday sports cars that don’t break down every time there’s a cloud in the sky’. Since the OG-Zed is now celebrating its 50th birthday, Top Gear’s given it the full review treatment, because this is one of those modern-feeling yet classic cars that really does live up to the billing. So, the basics. The 240Z is a front-engined, rear-wheel drive two-seater coupe. The 240 badging is derived from the engine's displacement: it's a 2.4-litre straightsix, basically a humdrum Nissan four-cylinder of the period with another pair of

cylinders lobbed on the end to make it into something a bit more special. Outputs are modest – obviously, this arrived the same year as mankind landed on the Moon. But - and you know what’s coming here - 150-odd horsepower is plenty when you’ve got around 1,050kg to shove along – about the same as an Up GTI, which musters just 113bhp. The 240Z is not a big car – certainly not the size of the E-Type it’s pretending to be – and it’s a light one. Power goes through a five-speed manual, if your car is a non-US spec one – though plenty of American cars have made their way over to Europe, due to them being plentiful and, if from Arizona or Texas originally, less likely to have been exposed to rust-nurturing conditions. Nowadays, you can spend between £15k and £35k+ on a 240Z, depending

on how much of a project you’d like. Ironically then, it’s priced to compete with its ‘modern’ ancestor, the gregarious but painfully ancient Nissan 370Z. But if you want a sports car for a Sunday blast, our money would be heading for the old-timer, and here’s why. WHAT'S THE VERDICT? “A compelling modern classic. Useable and huge fun, but doesn’t feel fragile” The Nissan – okay, Datsun 240Z – probably isn’t the first car that springs to mind when lusting after a 50-year old sporting GT. But its time is ripe now, because it’s a reliable, plentiful, and easy-to-drive classic. And all of the above means you’re more likely to use it than leave it

BUYING

As the 240Z’s popularity grows, you’ll find a vibrant owner’s scene brimmed with knowledge to help you find a good’un. Rust has killed off plenty by now, but the survivors – often imported from the US, where the car won so many friends and fans – will often have lived in drier states where the dreaded rot is less of a common issue. The base of windscreen, inner wheelarches and bonnet edges are particularly vulnerable, so keep a sharp eye. If you can, get your potential 240Z on a lift before purchase to check the floor is dry and there’s no sign of cheap and not-very-cheerful filler hiding dark, corroded secrets.

cowering in a garage in case you have to spend a week polishing a slatted fly out of its precious paintwork. And every time you use it, you’ll get the full satisfaction out of it, because this sweetly balanced little coupe loves to be opened up. It’s just as appealing now as when it conquered the world 50 years ago. Happy birthday, Zed. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE? This is a very unintimidating classic car. Drive a Sixties Jaguar or Maserati or Alfa and there’s a sense that you’re using the best family China. That slight guilt of causing wear and tear to a beautiful and delicate object, that may crumble in your hands at any moment.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

It’s what’s usually known as ‘character’. What the 240Z does is give the sounds and smells and sensations of late Sixties motoring, but with a sense of inherent toughness. The engine makes up for in response what it lacks in torque, building from a stuttery idle to a barrel-chested mid-range that’s BMWish in its warble and perky enough to still feel quick. I’ll be totally honest and say that, out of mechanical sympathy I didn’t bounce this Nissan Heritage car off its rev limiter, but the mid-range is joyously characterful. Likewise, the gearbox is the same story. Instead of fingertip-toeing it around like the whole mechanism is made of glass, you can grab it by the scruff and manhandle it about, enjoying the long throw and pleasing heft of the whole action. It feels built to last, and built

to be enjoyed. The steering’s less impressive – it’s feelsome of course, but rather heavy and rubbery feeling, but hey, it’s an elderly thing and we’ve had enough of twoturns-between-lock instafast, hyperlight steering. You listening, Ferrari? Oh. Titchy wheels and tyres give the car ride comfort that’s alien to all modern sports cars apart from an Alpine, but the body control is haphazard and you can feel the chassis flexing if you’re really leaning on it. Being a Japanese performance car with a big following in America, there are myriad tuning parts available, so you can easily stiffen the body up if you’re willing to get handy with the spanners – and compromise the originality.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX: WHAT NEED TO KNOW BEFORE SELLING YOUR PROPERTY

A

capital gain occurs when you sell something for more than you spent to acquire it. This happens a lot with investments, but it applies to personal property too. Are you planning to sell your home? Find out what tax you will have to pay and how to reduce this liability. You can’t hide from the tax department Any property transaction performed in Portugal must be reported to the Tax Authorities by the notary that executes the deed. This means that when you declare the sale on your tax return, the tax authorities already know of it, so if you fail to include this on your declaration, the taxman will be after you. It’s mandatory to file a tax return every time you sell a Portuguese property Irrespective of your tax domicile, if you sold a property located in Portugal, this means that you need to declare it in your tax return in Portugal. Regardless if there was a gain or not, it’s mandatory to make this declaration, which happens normally in May of the year following the sale, in the case of individual ownership, or within 30 days after the sale, in the case of corporate ownership (companies without activity). Declaring the sale doesn’t mean you need to pay tax You only pay tax, if you had a gain on the transaction. So if you sell something for more than the purchase price, then the difference is a capital gain and that is reported on your taxes. Please note that the value you paid for the property needs to be adjusted, according to the inflation coefficient, applicable to the year of purchase. This means that the purchase value will increase for the capital gains calculation. Also, some expenses will be included in the tax return and deducted from any gain obtained. In which cases your sale is tax exempt It is possible to be exempt from tax in certain situations. For example if the property was acquired prior to 1989, it’s not liable to any CGT. Nevertheless, taxpayers will still have to declare these operations. But this is not the only tax exemption on capital gains from

48

the sale of a property. The law provides, for example, that if you use the full amount of the sale of a property to buy another home (only applicable to tax residents and only in the sale of their primary residence), to build a home or purchase of land intended for the construction, you don’t pay tax on capital gains. Please note that this reinvestment of the gains, needs to happen within 36 months and can be done in any EU country. Expenses allowed to deduct your capital gains From the sale of your property you can deduct the costs incurred with the purchase operation and sale of the property (eg IMT and registers on the purchase, real estate commission on the sale, etc). Taxpayers can also deduct costs incurred in property over the past twelve years, such as property refurbishments, or other money spent to increase the value of the asset, including the cost of the energy certification. Residents vs Non-residents individual ownership If you are non-resident for tax purposes, the tax applicable to your capital gain will be 28%. If however, you are resident, the tax will be levied only on 50% of the gain and you will be taxed according to the tax bracket applicable to your overall income. However, please note that it is possible to contest the tax bill and challenge the tax authorities, so that a non-resident can also be taxed only on 50% of the gain. This would mean paying 14%, but it requires some time and additional work to challenge the tax bill, which initially will be on the full gain. This is due to the fact that many taxpayers have taken the tax authorities to court and won their cases. Please note even when a non-resident is taxed under the same rules as a resident, as this is not his primary residence, the gains cannot be rolled over if he buys another property, that will only be available for those residents that sell their main residence and buy another property which will be their main residency. How does this reinvestment work? If you are resident and this is your primary residence, you can reinvest the proceeds of the sale on another purchase within the EU.

This needs to be done on a purchase made between 24 months prior and 36 months after the sale. If the reinvestment in the new property is lower than the total sale, then the tax will be calculated pro-rata. If you do not wish to reinvest into another property, please note that you can make the reinvestment in a financial product. Provided that the taxpayer is demonstrably in retirement, or has, 65 years of age, he can choose to purchase an insurance contract or an individual membership of an open pension fund or contribution to the public funded scheme. To make this possible the purchase of this product must be made within six months from the date of sale of the property. There is no benefit for the exclusion of capital gains tax if the reinvestment is not made within the referred six-month period, or if, in any year, the value of the benefits received exceeds the limit of 7.5% of the invested amount. In our opinion it is possible for both reinvestment options to be done together, partially in a new property, part in an insurance contract. Please note that if you fail to meet the reinvestment declared on your tax return or reinvest a lower amount, the tax will be reassessed, and you will pay interest. Even if you do not plan to sell your home for now, it is important that you keep all supporting charges and make sure the invoices include your name and fiscal number and very important: the correct address of the property. The repayment of mortgage loans, incurred to purchase the property, will also be taken into consideration, when calculating the tax return. It is important that you plan ahead, as you can’t afford any tax surprises. Please feel free to ask us for a capital gains tax simulation on your property. If you fear that you may be liable for a big capital gains tax bill, then let’s study your case. We may encounter a way to substantially reduce this tax burden.

Understanding the UK State Pension

t recently came to light that there have been 134,000 cases of underpaid state pensions. A public spending watchdog released a report that showed the cases were mostly women, many of whom were widows. The underpayments reached a cumulative total of £1 billion, some of which date all the way back to the mid ‘80s. These underpayments occurred because of a number of factors. First, entitlement rules are complicated, and not everyone understands what they are owed. Second, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) uses outdated IT systems, so incorrect information was likely input by computer automations. Additionally, DWP employees did not manually check the calculations on a regular basis. This monumental oversight has the potential to impact pensioners’ housing benefits, pension credit, and social care. For many, it already has. 15,000 pensioners have died without ever having been given what they were entitled to. To make matters worse, their next of kin will not receive payments. Former pensions minister, Steve Webb, first raised the issue in 2020. This

ll children have a special gift and special power. Each one has a unique way of interpreting life and appreciating their daily routine. Each child has a specific way of engaging in playfulness. All children have a superpower! It doesn't matter if she comes across a high stone wall or a pond so big that it invades everything. Or if she gets tired after having travelled many kilometres. Petra never gives up - she follows her path against winds and seas until she reaches the goal. Petra’s superpower is PERSEVERANCE. João is afraid of a lot of things, which sometimes is good, because it can protect him. But there are certain occasions when fear prevents him from doing what he needs and wants. So João takes a deep breath, fills up with strength and decides, with courage, to face his difficulties. João’s superpower is BRAVERY. Carlos is able to see a red ant, the kind that stings, among a million black ants. He is able to hear the rattle of a cat that got lost in the hustle and bustle of the biggest party. When he touches something, his skin acts as a powerful detector of shapes, textures and temperatures. Carlos’ superpower is ATTENTION. Constança does not mind moving by land, sea or air. She can do everything that is physically proposed. There was one time that she climbed hundreds of steps of a very high tower, without getting tired, to contemplate the most beautiful shooting stars. Constança´s superpower is AGILITY. Tomé is like a photography machine, and it is why he is able to remember even the smallest detail: the colour of a schoolboy’s socks, the number of freckles on a blonde girl, and the name of all the sheep in a large flock. Tomé’s superpower is MEMORY. These five children have superpowers like their peers. And while you are reading the article you are thinking about how great these superpowers are and possibly you are finding similarities with a child you know. But Petra, João, Carlos, Constança and Tomé in addition to their superpowers, they are also superheroes. Petra suffered a traumatic brain injury and uses a wheelchair to move.

WOMEN’S LIBERATION MOVEMENT – GOOD NEWS OR TAX MULE?

T

With International Women's day approaching, Elaine Godley gives us a brief history about the organisation

he feminist movement has undergone many transitions in both Eastern and Western society dating as far back as 615bc when the ancient Greek female poet Soppho wrote about sexuality. Rumour has it that women were encouraged to go to work because only half the population were taxed. Significant tax revenue was generated not just from the working women, but also from a necessary new industry – childcare which generated jobs and even more tax revenue. Gloria Steinem a leading US journalist, feminist and activist, co-founded Ms magazine in 1972, specifically to encourage young women to follow the trend to become independent. In April 1993, the first “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” was celebrated. Launched by

54

Steinem and other feminine activists, ten years later, the organisation extended the idea to include all genders. The original concept was created to support young women to raise self-esteem in the workplace and life generally. This year, young people will invade the workplace on April 28th 2022. The pressure on women to work in the modern world is phenomenal. Society puts great demands on women to be superhuman hot-deskers with multiple roles as a mother; career woman; wife; homemaker; housekeeper and all-round good egg. No wonder so many women suffer with mental health issues. The next International Women’s Day is March 8th 2022. I wonder what Soppho would make of this celebration and whether she would agree or disagree on the equality/glass ceiling debate?

Vitamin C not only helps to keep your skin healthy, but also works against premature skin ageing. Collagen Glowing skin? Consider adding vitamin C to your diet and include it as a face serum. It stimulates the cell renewal of your skin. If you have slow cell turnover, your skin may look duller. In addition, collagen helps to keep the skin taut and prevents wrinkles. If you combine the intake of collagen, for example in eggs, meat and fish, with vitamin C, your body can absorb the collagen better. In addition, vitamin C also helps to stimulate the body's production of collagen. Iron absorption Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron. And that also has benefits for your skin. If you don't get enough iron, you can get anaemia. This often results in pale skin, but you can also get a dull complexion and both your skin and hair can become drier and more damaged. About

Blooming time

Spring has arrived, adding sweetness to the air and transforming the landscape with intense colours. Here is a little guide to some of the more commonly seen wildflowers growing in the East of the Algarve and that are currently in full bloom!

ALMOND TREE - PRUNUS DULCIS The end of winter and arrival of spring is proclaimed when a delicate blanket of pink and white covers the Algarve. In the months of February and March, the soft white colour of the almond-trees in blossom mixes with the greens and browns of the surrounding landscape. The fragrant sweet smelling almond blossoms drench the Algarve air and provide an unforgettable and magical period of time.

ONE LEAVED SQUILL SCILLA MONOPHYLLOS As the name monophyllos suggests, this flower appears to grow only one leaf. It is a fairly common find in lightly wooded areas of Portugal, southern Spain and Morocco. In Portugal it can be found in almond orchards. This wildflower can be seen in bloom from March through to around May; it is a member of the Lily family (Liliaceae).

GUM ROCK ROSE CISTUS LADANIFER The flowers of the Rock Rose are rather crumpled-looking, with translucent petals, some pure white and others white with dark maroon spots. The sticky fragrant substance which comes from the tough, dark green leaves of the plant is used in the perfume industry. Gum Rock Rose is native to Portugal, its flowers releasing the smell typical to the Algarve and the one we all know and love can be seen from March to June.

BERMUDA BUTTERCUP - OXALIS PES-CAPRAE Fields covered with a sea of endless yellow flowers. While beautiful and adding a pop of colour during winter, this plant is listed as an invasive plant. Indigenous to South Africa, the plant has become a pest plant in different parts of the world and difficult to eradicate because of how it propagates through underground bulbs. If it should arrive unwanted in your garden, the best way to get rid of it is by pulling it out manually.

PEONY - PAEONIA BROTEROI The Peony is a perennial, herbaceous species of peony. It is an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula. The pink rose is a highly fragrant flower. The plant reaches up to 40 centimetres (16 in) in height. The common name in Portugal is Rosa-Albardeira. It grows in rocky places and humid spots, flowering from March to May

STRAWBERRY TREE - ARBUTUS UNEDO A charming broadleaf evergreen shrub, with its remarkable bell-shaped flowers hanging from the tip of the branches. The Strawberry Tree blooms between October and April and typically yields its fruits in winter. The fruits gradually ripen to yellow and then red over a twelve month period. The berries are harvested and used to make the popular drink Medronho.

YELLOW BROOMRAPE CISTANCHE PHELYPAEA Without question, the salt-marsh ‘star attraction’ is Cistanche Phelypaea. A member of the Orobanchaceae (Broomrape) family. These fascinating, bright yellow flowers are found only in southern Portugal and southern Spain, on Crete, and in a few parts of the extreme eastern Mediterranean and are particularly well represented at Ria Formosa.

SOUTHERN GRAPE HYACINTH - MUSCARI NEGLECTUM The Grape Hyacinth is a perennial wildflower growing from a bulb. Typically, plants reach a height of about 12 cm, but in sheltered locations specimens up to 20cm tall can be found. Growing wild throughout the Mediterranean, it is a common sight in grassy coastal dune slacks. Muscari neglectum can be found in fields, scrub and in exposed rocky places from February onwards.

FRENCH LAVENDER LAVANDULA STOECHAS French lavender has its name from the country where it was developed and grown intensively for perfume. In France, a common name for it is “butterfly lavender” because the tips of the flowers look like butterflies. French lavender thrives in the Algarve. We have spotted many lavender in bloom even though the typical flowering season is June to August.

And last but not least, this one we could not leave off the list even though it will not start to flower until May. SEA LAVENDER - LIMONIUM ALGARVENSE The Sea Lavender is endemic to this region. It is a perennial plant, limited to the Algarve and, in Spain, to the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz. It is found in coastal rocks, marshes and coastal sand, owing its name to its location in the Algarve. Flowering: from May to August.
