Thank you if you responded to our supporter survey last issue. This is a smaller than usual magazine as we look at the results of that survey and plan how best to produce future editions, while still keeping you informed. We’ve sent out our Christmas catalogue with this issue and please do place your order early if you support us in this way, as popular cards sell out quickly. If you’ve received this in the post you’ll also find a competition form on the mailing sheet to win a spa break – our grateful thanks to Ufford Park who have donated this prize. Second prize is a GoPro Hero Session and accessories. Pictured on the front cover is one of the founders of our service, Gerry Hermer, as he joined colleagues to mark his retirement as our aviation consultant. His company Sterling Aviation provided our first East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) helicopters, which initially he and

He was a driving force behind the setting up of the charity and has overseen all of our aviation achievements to date. Finally the wonderful legacy gift, by the late Richard Allen, of a Ferrari Nembo Spyder was sold at auction for more than half a million pounds. This could fund a new hangar at Cambridge meaning we can extend our operating hours and save more lives with the remainder supporting our emergency medical service.

Alex’s airlift after freak fall When Alex Long from Attleborough in Norfolk began restoring an 88 Flak anti-aircraft gun from the Second World War he was only too well aware, as a military history enthusiast, of the damage it had been designed to do. What he wasn’t expecting though was to receive multiple injuries himself in a freak accident. Last summer, Alex, who was then 23, was sitting astride the gun barrel cleaning the mechanism when a ratchet strap, holding the springs in place suddenly broke under the tension, catapulting him high into the air. Alex landed on concrete around 25 feet away from the gun, having hit his head on another vehicle in the fall. He was knocked out and as he came round his first instinct was to try to stand up but his colleagues told him to stay where he was, which proved to be vital to his recovery. A First Responder arrived quickly, soon followed by ambulance service paramedics who started to treat Alex. Realising the possibility of a serious spinal injury, and the difficulties involved with moving him they called for help from EAAA. Anglia One pilots Frank Slatter and Rich Anderson landed on rough land close by. On board were

Dr Zoe Smeed, Dr Jeremy Mauger and critical-care paramedic Rod Wells. The crew completed a full assessment and administered strong pain relief as Alex drifted in and out of consciousness. He was flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for urgent assessment. Alex can’t remember much about the journey, but was aware of being loaded onto the helicopter, and that someone was sitting next to him throughout the flight. The EAAA crew used ultrasound equipment during the transfer to check Alex’s lungs hadn’t collapsed. The flight from East Harling in Norfolk took just 20 minutes. “Without the intervention of EAAA it’s likely that I’d be in a wheelchair now. I’m so grateful for the help they gave me that day.”

PATIENTS RECEIVED OUR HELP

With family members mum Debbie, fiancée Victoria, brother Matt and sister Rebecca at the hospital, Alex underwent spinal surgery to repair damage to his vertebrae, during which rods and screws were inserted into his spinal column to hold the fractured vertebrae in position. Beside the damage to his spine, Alex had suffered a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull, a broken collar bone, a sprained ankle and the loss of one of his front teeth.

He has nothing but praise for those who attended him and said: “Without the intervention of EAAA it’s likely that I’d be in a wheelchair now. I’m so grateful for the help they gave me that day.” He’s now looking forward to getting back to a long term restoration project of his own 1944 Dodge truck.

Alex was in hospital for two weeks then allowed home wearing a neck brace for the next seven to eight weeks. With the support of Victoria and his family, he has made good progress.

Some notable recent events include: King’s Lynn Priory Rotary Club’s EAAAster Egg trail at Sandringham which entertained more than 800 families and raised over £4,500. Rugby Group Benevolent Fund donated £11,000 through their support of charities operating near the cement plants once run by the company, in this case Cemex Barrington in Cambridgeshire. Shaun Whiter and Lee O’Brien raised nearly £4,000 for us and Friends of Ipswich Town FC by cycling 150 miles in the Tour de Suffolk.

Knight’s Hill Hotel, King’s Lynn, hosted our Spring Swing Ball for 140 guests which raised £3,500. Special thanks to sponsors The Big Prawn Co., Greenyard Frozen UK and Jack Richards and Son. The Annual St George’s Day Rally, organised by the North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club raised an incredible £6,600, bringing their total from this yearly event to over £26,600. Kevin Parsons, National Association of Stable Staff, and Gary Humphreys, Godolphin Stables, were both runners up of the Rory MacDonald Community Award at the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards 2017. Both chose EAAA as the charity to receive £2,000 from each of them.

EAAA was privileged to be Musketeer Events’ chosen charity at the Burnham Market and Houghton Hall International Horse Trials. The fundraising highlight saw 18 riders take on the professional horse trials riders in a camel race for a special souvenir trophy. Around £10,000 was raised at the two events.

Lottery Canvassers OUR

Mike Bolton sser EAAA Canva

The lottery is really important to us raising an incredible sum, almost half our income, while offering players the chance to find out more about the work we do and how we spend your donations. And there’s the chance of winning a cash prize as well. The odds in our lottery are 5,111 to one – a bit better than National Lottery which is 54,000,000 to one! Canvasser Mike Bolton explained that it’s not a 9-5 job and the hours can sometimes be long. On a lunch time round in Norwich,

10

Our lottery canvassers are out on the streets of East Anglia nearly every day doing a fantastic job. Many of our wonderful lottery players signed up thanks to one of the team who knocked on the door and asked if you would like to support EAAA. it was easy to see that this job is certainly not for the faint-hearted, the teams are on their feet all day, in all weathers, having sometimes travelled great distances in order to cover all of East Anglia. Sometimes not everybody is happy to speak to them, but Mike said: “You just have to let that go over your head, respect people’s decisions and move onto the next house, and hopefully have a good old chat with someone who does want to speak to you and find out more about the air ambulance.”

ANGLIA TWO’S TEAM HELPED 239 PEOPLE

Mike added: “It’s a nice feeling knowing that the people you have spoken to have ended up raising thousands of pounds a year for a really great charity.” If you see Mike and his colleagues out canvassing in your street or in a local shopping precinct, please give them a friendly wave and say hello. Many charities and businesses use canvassers to help build support or to sell products, and for EAAA this is a really effective way to recruit lottery players.

It’s a nice feeling knowing that the people you have spoken to have ended up raising thousands of pounds a year for a really great charity

Our lottery canvassers are distinctive in their red jackets or shirts and yellow hi-viz jackets displaying our logo, and will ask if you would like to sign up to play our lottery. If you choose to play the lottery and help EAAA they will take a few details from you and ask for your bank details using a secure tablet device. They are not permitted to take cash on the doorstep – if you want to make a donation, please go online or phone us. Our canvassers, who carry an identity badge with their name, photo and our logo, work on behalf of either Tower Lotteries or Burden & Burden, our partner companies. If unsure, please call us (see page 2) to confirm that the canvasser is from EAAA. Outside office hours, you can check our website where we have a regularly updated list of canvassers including their pictures. Tower Lotteries, in partnership with EAAA, are currently looking to recruit self-employed canvassers throughout the region. If you’d like to find out more about supporting your local Air Ambulance in a career helping to recruit lottery players, please contact Cliff Egan at Tower on 07868 564563.

EAAA already adheres to the highest fundraising standards, but as regulations increase, partly in response to unsolicited marketing from unethical companies, we must ensure that we are maintaining these standards and keeping up to date with changes.
