What's on - Autumn 2023

Page 1

Welcome!

Autumn may be the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but at Your Library it is also the time when we swing into action with our exciting program of events.

Familiar favourites are returning in the shape of gardening, craft, games, tech help and book talk. New events include our first ever online book chat, so you can join in from home, an opportunity to enrol in a CAE course without travelling into the city at Boronia library, and the NDIS will be dropping in across the region. You can hear from popular author Fiona Lowe at Croydon, find out about the Cold War Games (also known as the Melbourne Olympics) at Rowville, and find out about Elizabeth Gould, the artist who illustrated John Gould’s bird books, at Yarra Junction and Ferntree Gully, as part of our ‘Women in History’ series.

Whether your inclination is to curl up with a good book, or scrunch through fallen leaves while the end of your nose tingles with cold, we’ve got something to make your Autumn glorious!

Journey of a lost manuscript with Author Lorraine Smith

Thur 30 March, 2pm - 3pm

Mooroolbark Library - 9800 6480 events.yourlibrary.com.au

When an old parchment was found inside a copy of Alice in Wonderland in a secondhand bookshop, everything about it was a mystery. Discovered to be an Elizabethan manuscript on vellum, this is the enthralling story of its travels from a hamlet in Yorkshire in 1583 to Warrnambool in 2013.

It is a journey with so many twists and lucky escapes it should be a novel – but this is a true story. FREE

Meet the Author: Cheryl Adam

Wed 26 April, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

Bayswater Library - 9800 6498 events.yourlibrary.com.au

Cheryl Adam left Australia in the sixties on a one-way ticket and took 17 years to get back. In her luggage was a husband and five children. After her husband’s stroke, she took up study while caring for him, and gained a Master of Fine Art. She wrote poetry and became a performance artist, performing in Australia and overseas. Her poetry extended into novels after taking up a writing course at Holmesglen TAFE.

At the age of 74, her first novel Lillian’s Eden was published by Spinifex Press. Assisted by Covid-19, it became a trilogy that spanned the fifties and sixties and has gained five-star reviews in The Sydney Herald and Goodreads. FREE

Barbara will be speaking about her books and her experience of publishing at a more mature age. She will also introduce her next book in progress about nursing in the 1960s while living in the UK. FREE

Meet local Author: Kathryn Hore

Sat 13 May, 10:30am - 11:30am

Bayswater Library - 9800 6498 events.yourlibrary.com.au

The Stranger is a feminist, dystopian western, in which the ‘man with no name’ turns out to be a woman, and the town with guilty secrets is not quite what it seems. Kathryn Hore grew up watching too many revisionist westerns, falling early for their enigmatic protagonists – that figure of the stranger riding into town, with ambiguous morals and dubious agenda. Yet these were not stories which had much room for women, especially young suburban girls from Melbourne. The Stranger is a novel that challenges and interrogates genre, and Hore considers how we as readers and writers make room for ourselves in otherwise hostile fictional worlds, to claim our own space. FREE

Meet the Author: Fiona Lowe

Fri 19 May, 2pm - 3pm

Croydon Library - 9800 6448 events.yourlibrary.com.au

Join us to hear Fiona talk about her life as a writer, and the upcoming release The Money Club; a gripping exploration of modern greed which unpicks the moral quagmire of those who trade on the bonds of their closest friendships and family for money. FREE
