LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends, Each first concert series of a new season is thrilling, a time of new beginnings, but this 2015/2016 Season kickoff with Sinatra Weekend is even more amazing than usual! Philadelphia has always had a special relationship with Frank Sinatra, so it’s only natural that we would celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birthday with three days of activities devoted to his magical music, to his Rat Pack friends, and to their playground of times gone by, Atlantic City’s famous 500 Club. The POPS loves Frank and Philly loves Frank so much that we had to add a show for this first series of the new season! We had an incredible summer, bringing music to an expanded number of regional events, most notably through our new Salute Series concerts. The Salute Series celebrates American traditions, particularly the tradition of service, on American holidays of note. POPS at Longwood for Memorial Day Weekend, POPS on Independence on July 3, and POPS at Wildwood on July 4 all were memorable outdoor events, bringing the POPS to new and larger audiences. On July 21, we held our Second Annual Christmas in July event, giving away 100 bicycles and helmets to deserving children of active military, Police, and Fire Department families. There, we announced The Second Annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas Spectacular — A Salute to the Military and First Responders on December 4, at which we will again provide 2,000 free tickets to service families in the spirit of the holidays. We hope we’ll see all of you at the nine other Christmas Spectacular concerts so that we can celebrate the season together. This fall, we began POPS in Schools, an 11-school program with the School District of Philadelphia, designed to bring our POPS musicians into neighborhood schools with an innovative program built on shared experience and performance. The program kicked off with POPS Presents the All City Jazz Festival in June and will continue through the school year, culminating in a second festival in late spring. There is so much to tell you; I’m especially excited about our first Wells Fargo concert, POPS Presents Andrea Bocelli, on December 12, which happens to be Sinatra's actual birthday. Your support has allowed us to expand into our community with innovative programs, accessible free concerts, and a sheer enthusiasm to create memories with the amazing music of The Philly POPS! Don’t miss any of it! Now, enjoy our special guest artist for today’s concert, Michael Andrew, and revel in the mastery of our Music Director Michael Krajewski and the amazing musicians of The Philly POPS!

MY SINATRA MEMORIES: The Rat Pack, Atlantic City Summers & More WITH JOE DEL RASO Philly POPS Board Director Joe Del Raso grew up next door to Paul “Skinny” D’Amato, owner of Atlantic City’s 500 Club — the 1940s-60s era hot spot where stars, athletes, and politicians dined, danced, and mingled. Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack friends were regulars — both on and off the stage. Here, Del Raso shares memories of that time

Club. Later in life, Sinatra would appear there and never charge for it. Sinatra was always one of Skinny’s best friends. Skinny was a great storyteller. He had this charisma and style that made quite an impression on me. He always pushed me to go to school and be a lawyer. I have a great photo of when I showed him my law degree on the steps of Villanova. And his 500 Club? In the summer, Atlantic City was the place to be. The 500 Club was the spot for many famous acts. In 1946, Skinny put Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis together as a comedy duo. Sammy Davis, Jr., started there as part of the Will Mastin Trio. It wasn’t only the people on stage, though. Grace Kelly would come into the club with Oleg Cassini. Joe DiMaggio, Eddie Fisher, Louis Prima were regulars.

MY SINATRA MEMORIES continued
Do you have some favorite memories? Skinny’s daughter Paulajane and I used to go to the shows with her father and then the afterparties. One night, when Sammy Davis, Jr., played Caesar’s, we went up to his suite and didn’t leave until 6 in the morning!
Once, when Paulajane and I were teenagers, she called me and said, “Come on, I’m hungry. You want to go to the club?” We were in trouble when the manager caught us. He said, “It’s bad enough you came into the club. Now you have to order shrimp cocktail and steak?” How did you get involved with The Philly POPS? How else? Frank Giordano (POPS CEO). He knows how to get everybody involved in good things. My first concert was The Magic of John Williams. What’s been your favorite POPS concert? I loved Bond and Beyond, but my favorite so far was Sixties Hits With The Midtown Men.

Aetna aims to spend about $35 billion to buy rival Humana and become the latest health insurer bulking up on government business as the industry adjusts to the federal health-care overhaul. The combination also would bolster Aetna’s presence in the state- and federally funded Medicaid program and Tricare coverage for military

Health insurers are eager to do more business with government payers due in part to a Medicaid expansion fostered by the health-care overhaul and Medicare Advantage’s surging enrollment. The overhaul is expanding Medicaid coverage in several states as it seeks to provide health coverage for millions of uninsured people. Meanwhile, total enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans has tripled over the last decade to about 16.8 million people and is expected to keep growing as more baby boomers become eligible for the plans. Aetna’s acquisition of Humana would make it the largest provider of Medicare Advantage coverage, with 4.4 million members, a figure that could change depending on regulatory review. “Government markets are the most rapidly growing aspect of the system,” said Dan MendelSee AETNA on A2

“Thanks in large part to our inaugural partners at Philadelphia Energy Solutions, our new POPS in Schools program brings our musicians out of the concert hall and into the classroom,” said POPS President and CEO Frank Giordano. “Music students and educators at 11 Philadelphia public schools this year will enjoy Master Classes with POPS artists and be given the opportunity to see the POPS perform in the Kimmel Center,” Giordano said. “These efforts will enhance and supplement the current music education programs in the School District of Philadelphia. Philadelphia Energy Solutions makes this meaningful work possible — we are incredibly grateful for their support.”
