WELCOME TO THE 2016/17 SEASON at Pennsylvania Ballet! I am thrilled to unveil the amazing lineup of performances that we have planned for the year ahead. Some are quite traditional. Some are truly innovative. All of them redefine, in some way, what the ballet experience can be. For 53 years and counting, Pennsylvania Ballet has built a wonderful reputation for
WELCOME
reinterpreting and performing some of the greatest dance works ever created. I am so honored to help carry on that tradition, adding new energy and some pleasing surprises along the way.
In addition to several beloved standard-setting works, we are beyond excited to present some of the most cutting-edge new ballets in existence today — including world premieres from Brian Sanders, Nicolo Fonte, and our Choreographer in Residence, Matthew Neenan.
From our thrilling mixed-bill programs to Cinderella, Le Corsaire, and George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,® we hope you’ll enjoy every moment and take away some wonderful new memories. Join us to experience this incredible season.

A lavish combination of music and dance — highlighted by a fanciful carriage, pumpkins, plumes of smoke, and elaborate costume changes — enchants dance and theater lovers of all ages.

REVOLUTION A BRI A N SA ND E RS WORLD P RE MIE RE An all-new work created by Brian Sanders, founder of JUNK, the Philadelphia-based troupe acclaimed for avant-garde displays of fluidity and athleticism. While Sanders has worked with Pennsylvania Ballet dancers for Shut Up & Dance benefit performances in the past, this is his much anticipated first Pennsylvania Ballet commission.
T H E T H I RD LI G HT By David Dawson Music by Gavin Bryars Inspired by the fascinating behavior of light, this captivating performance is set to a specially commissioned score from Britain’s renowned post-minimalist composer Gavin Bryars. Thrill to amazing feats of physical elasticity and unexpected musical arrangements as the light plays off both the dancers’ bodies and the innovative modern set designs.
SQ UA RE DA N CE By George Balanchine Music by Antonio Vivaldi/Arcangelo Corelli The worlds of traditional American folk dance and classical ballet blend beautifully in this spirited production. See for yourself how Balanchine masterfully marries these very different dance styles with intricate formations.

le corsaire By Angel Corella (after Petipa) Music by Adolphe Adam This rollicking, lighthearted production is a feast for the eyes — with exuberant choreography, elaborate costumes, and impeccable set design — but at its heart is a touching story about finding true love. Learn what happens when a swashbuckling pirate in search of treasure becomes enamored with a slave girl, sets her free, and seeks their happily ever after.

ROMANCE REMA NSOS By Nacho Duato Music by Enrique Granados Praised for its powerful expressivity, fluid forms, and dynamic utilization of space, Remansos is a playful modern ballet featuring three men and three women. Lovely Spanish influences are evident in both Duato’s mesmerizing choreography and Granados’ whimsical score, 8 Poetic Waltzes. The simplicity of the costumes, lighting, and sets — and the occasional appearance of a single red rose — places the focus squarely on the beauty and dynamism of the dancers’ forms.
A NI CO LO FO NTE WORLD P RE MIE RE Brooklyn-born choreographer Nicolo Fonte has forged a reputation for a daring and original approach to the language of movement. Following the wildly popular premiere of Fonte’s Grace Action at Pennsylvania Ballet in June 2015, this all new work will showcase his highly developed fusion of ideas, dance, and design.
W EST ERN SY MP HONY By George Balanchine Music by Hershy Kay Travel back to the wild, wild West with this high-spirited and playful ballet featuring a grand cast of rugged cowboys and their beloved feather-festooned saloon girls. A captivating collection of stories links the steps, formations, and gestures with Kay’s lively and familiar mix of classic orchestrations. Packed with fast-paced action accentuated by bold costume and lighting selections, the centerpiece of this performance is a darkly elegant pas de deux.
G EO RG E BA LA N CHINE ’S DUE TS Sylvia Pas de Deux Music by Léo Delibes This beautiful grand pas de deux features a pizzicato solo that is designed to show off the farthest reaches of a ballerina’s technical achievements. Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux Music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Balanchine's virtuosic masterpiece of amazing agility and technique, this performance challenges the range of the dancers’ ability to perform intricate moves in tandem.
