A Message From Our Senior Pastor

December 2017 Thank you, church family for attending the Fall Connections Church Meeting in November. As a church, we reviewed and celebrated our successes over this past year; the following includes a few highlights. We have welcomed more than 645 prospective and new members, assisted 61 baptism candidates, and reached more than 7,000 people weekly. Additionally, more than 850 people completed the adult and teen Financial Freedom Institute classes. The Children’s and Teen Ministry provided 38 high school seniors with $76,000 in scholarships and quarterly college care packages.

ESC Care has served more than 3,000 people, totaling $145,000 for the food pantry, housing, and utility assistance, and provided $20,000 to support hurricane relief in Houston, Texas. ESC Care also partnered with and provided support for local organizations such as the Center for Leadership Development, United Negro College Fund, Edna Martin Christian Center, and the Indianapolis Urban League. Not only are we helping people in our church, but we are also assisting people in the surrounding communities, nationally, and globally. The ROCK Initiative has successfully built three homes, established the Arlington Woods Neighborhood Association, dedicated two Habitat for Humanity homes, and started construction on the mixed-use facility, Sunstone at Arlington Woods. Lastly, members of our congregation alongside Heartland Church painted a latrine, laid the foundation for the orphan children’s home, and built a kitchen at the school in Turpin Village during the 2017 Haiti mission trips. We thank God for all the blessings and continuing to take this ministry from faith to faith and glory to glory! As we close out 2017, I encourage you to reflect on this year’s theme, God’s Majesty, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens,” Psalm 8:1 (NIV). How did you grow closer to God? How did God show up in your choices, attitudes, and behaviors in the workplace, in conversations, and relationships? How did He show favor in your situations, console you during your time of need, and carry you through? I encourage you to continue to put God first and strengthen your relationship with Him through prayer, meditation, and daily reading of God’s Word.

Blessings,

Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Senior Pastor 1

RECREATION MINISTRY: It’s More Than Physical W RI T T EN BY BEN T O LER

Eastern Star Church’s Recreation Ministry, led by Cecil Sinkfield, Director of Activities, is an invaluable resource that provides a variety of opportunities to help members and the community meet physical needs while learning about God. This year has been a busy and fulfilling year for the Recreation Ministry. Activities included: boot camp classes, youth basketball and cheerleading, softball, summer camp, line dancing, and the Senior Saints bodybuilding classes. When asked how participants’ spiritual needs are met through the ministry, Bro. Sinkfield stated that building scripture knowledge is vital. He noted that during the youth basketball season, the kids are given scriptures from various books in the Bible every week to remember. The basketball coaches ensure the kids memorize the scriptures and help them understand the context of the scripture and how it could apply to their daily lives. During workouts, scriptures are posted on walls, tables, mirrors, basketball goals, benches, bulletin boards, and the floor to help participants to learn scriptures and encourage one another. The youth participants are regularly asked by coaches and players, ‘What’s the scripture for this week?’ and ‘What was last week’s scripture?’ Bro. Sinkfield explained,

“Being involved in activities like this, contributes greatly to the ministry’s goal and allows people to be with like-minded Christians in a positive environment.”

For 2018, the ministry is excited to add new activities for members and the community. Stay tuned for more information concerning upcoming activities and registration details. Due to the anticipated increase in activities in 2018, you are invited to become a volunteer. If you are a people person, quick to listen, slow to speak, and enjoy volunteering with kids, then the Recreation Ministry is for you! If you are interested in participating in this dynamic ministry, contact Cecil Sinkfield at (317) 591-5050 ext. 159 or email csinkfield@easternstarchurch.org.

THE ROCK INITIATIVE UPDATES! • The two Habitat for Humanity homes have completed construction! The families moved into their new homes on December 2. • Construction on Sunstone at Arlington Woods, The ROCK Initiative’s first mixed-used facility, has now begun! The project will be completed by April/May of 2018. • Sunstone at Arlington Woods has secured its first commercial tenant, Financial Health Credit Union (FHCU). FHCU’s mission is to enable their members to achieve financial health through the services they offer, the information and advice they give; and the convenience and value they provide. FHCU will become the second financial institution within the 46218 community!

THE PRAYER MINISTRY: Praying For You W R I T TEN BY PH YLLIS KE ND ALL

Prayer doesn’t change God… it changes us. We change our prayers from complaints to praise, which enable a closer fellowship and deeper relationship with God. The Prayer Ministry provides prayer support for the congregation of Eastern Star Church and the community. One of the many Bible verses used by the Prayer Ministry is Philippians 4:6-7 that ask believers not to worry about anything but instead pray about everything. When you cast your cares upon the Lord while thanking him for all he has done, you can begin to understand and experience God’s peace. The Prayer Ministry was first started to support the televised broadcasts of the church. At that time, a phone bank was used to allow viewers to call in for prayer. Once the church moved from television and embraced live streaming and electronic prayer requests, the Prayer Ministry had to reshape and refocus its efforts to continue to meet the needs of the church. Chris Mabrey, ESC Care Exhortation Manager, explained that the purpose of the Prayer Ministry is to, “Pray for those who are seeking someone else to touch and agree with their prayer request, teach members how to pray for others, assist the church with prayer events, and to support the Barnabas Ministry on Sundays at each campus.” Bro. Mabrey states that you don’t have to be a prayer warrior to pray for others. He explained, “The term prayer warrior can be intimidating to many people because some people think that only certain people can pray and that only their prayers can be heard by God. The Prayer Ministry works hard to dispel this myth. The Bible states that we should all pray; therefore, anyone can be a prayer warrior.” If you are in need of prayer, members and non-members of Eastern Star Church can submit a prayer request by visiting our website, easternstarchurch.org and clicking on the PRAYER AND PRAISE WALL tab or via the Eastern Star Church App. Prayer requests can also be submitted by calling the Care Center at (317) 547-5483. To get involved in the Prayer Ministry, you must be a member of the church, have the heart for helping others, committed to attending Prayer Ministry meetings every third Saturday of the month, and actively participate in supporting the Prayer Ministry at the campus you attend. We all can pray, so if you can provide comfort, encourage words, or be able to help those in need of prayer, contact Chris Mabrey at (317) 547-5483 ext. 144 or email cmabrey@easternstarchurch.org to get involved in the Prayer Ministry.

ESC CARE CENTER: Serving Those in Need W RI T T EN BY STAC E Y MO O R E

With this myriad of vital programs, ministries, and partnerships the Care Center always has an opening for volunteers. Volunteers are invited to assist in the food and clothing pantry, front desk, mobile pantry, and mentors for students at School 99. There will be additional volunteer opportunities in 2018 so stay tuned! The Care Center welcomes donations. The most significant needs are toiletries, specifically: bar soap, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products. New winter hats and gloves are needed as well for children and adults. Deuteronomy 15:7-8 (ESV) best captures the ESC Care’s mission,

The Eastern Star Church (ESC) Care Center is the outreach arm of the church. ESC Care helps to meet the needs of the less fortunate and individuals in need of emergency assistance which includes church members as well as individuals and families in the greater Indianapolis community. “Glory to God that we have a senior pastor who has a heart and vision to serve the least, the lonely, and the left out,” said ESC Care Director Darnae’ Scales. “We are also very blessed to have members who generously support this mission,” he continued. According to Bro. Scales, “ESC Care serves more than 3,600 people annually through the food and clothing pantry. We’ve also helped more than 250 individuals and families with utility assistance.” Besides the pantry and utility assistance, there are several other components that comprise Care. Counseling services are available for members. Adults, couples, or youth can receive free counseling conducted by a licensed counselor. “We try to remove the stigma about counseling, and everything is kept confidential,” Bro. Scales shared. Additional programs that the Care Center provides include Freedom Connections, Foreign Missions (Care Global), Care Response (emergency and disaster relief), and The ROCK Initiative. ESC Care has had a partnership with Arlington Woods Elementary School (School 99) for more than 15 years. Bro. Scales said that the goal is to help School 99 become a five-star school through the technology initiative as well as a mentorship program. ESC Care also partners with the Center for Leadership Development to provide sponsorship for their annual college readiness programs, workshops, and conferences. ESC Care has partnerships with other local organizations such as the Indianapolis Urban League and Edna Martin Christian Center.

“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.” If you would like to volunteer, donate, or in need of assistance, call the Eastern Star Church Care Center at (317) 547-LIVE (5483) or email outreach@easternstarchurch.org.

EXPERIENCING GOD W R I T TEN BY BAR B AR A A. WALKER

Many people who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord spend their entire lives trying to “experience” God. So the question becomes, how can someone experience God? That was the focus of our most-recent Bible study series, Experiencing God. Our understanding of our experiences with God is dependent upon having a personal relationship with Him. We can only do that when we get to know Him by reading His Word and spending time in fellowship with Him through prayer. When asked what specific scriptures will help someone experience God, Sandra Keith’s, Director of Christian Education at Eastern Star Church, response was Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” She stressed, “That many times we don’t realize we are experiencing God. Even though He is always speaking, we don’t always hear Him because we are so busy with life.” People limit their hearing God because they expect God to always speak to them in an audible voice. But the series taught us that God speaks in many ways. We need to develop an attitude of expectancy so that we are always listening to Him because He is always speaking. Sis. Keith recently spoke with a visitor who attended (she came because she led by the Holy Spirit). The guest explained that she was not where she needed to be, but she was in the right place at the right time because she felt the presence of God. Another attendee said that she immediately went home following a Bible Study session and removed the television from her bedroom so that she could have a quiet place to spend time with God. Interestingly, both Sis. Keith and Minister Cameron Taylor, Bible Study Facilitator, said that the lesson “God’s Will and Your Life” was the most impactful. Besides introducing the series, that esson laid out the seven realities of experiencing God. The lesson also unapologetically stated that we could only experience God by allowing Jesus to be our model. An essential lesson in the series was realizing that God’s invitation for you to work with Him always leads you to a crisis of belief that requires faith and action. Believers spend too much of their time trying to bend God to their will. He doesn’t adjust Himself to our lives; we need to adjust our lives to align with His will. Sis. Keith explained how a new Christian could experience God, “They should find an accountability/prayer partner. They should also join a small group, Bible Study, and/or ministry. They need to limit their time on social media and work on relationships with other people, and with God. They also need quiet time alone with God.” Minister Taylor further explained, “The new Christian must realize that this is all about a relationship and not religion. The

way to experience God is through constant contact and communication with Him through His Word and prayer, and learning to serve as God molds and shapes them for His purpose.” Conversely, if someone is a mature Christian, Sis. Keith said,

“They can experience God by making adjustments in their lives. We all need to do an honest assessment of ourselves, and then make an effort to stop the behaviors that are outside of God’s will. You have to be deliberate in your attempt to change by setting aside time to study the Word. You may have to give up partying, hanging out, or even spending time with certain people. We need to do a better job of mentoring those who are younger in Christ. We have to learn to love the things that God loves and hate the things that God hates.” Minister Cameron added, “They can also experience God by realizing that developing their relationship with God is a constant growth process.” As the mature Christian seeks to lead a God-centered life, He will constantly reveal His purposes for their life. Most importantly, we must continually grow in our love relationship with God and to experience Him at the highest level. Minister Paul Lamberg, Bible Study Facilitator, said we need to stretch ourselves. “A mature Christian should always continue to learn and pray that God stretches them beyond where they are right now. They must be willing to step outside their comfort zone. Learn and then do, all for the glory of God.” Experiencing God is not hard because God is always speaking and He is everywhere all the time. The problem is with our receivers. We must be willing to attune our hearts and minds to Him to hear when He speaks. We must be willing to change and be unafraid to do the things He asks us to do. If we want to experience God, then we have to prioritize Him in our lives by intentionally setting aside time to develop our relationship with Him. KNOWING YOUR CREDIT SCORE W RI T T EN BY ALISA ALLE N

Credit scores are based on credit report information typically gathered from Equifax, Transunion, or Experian, the three major credit bureaus. Credit scores range from 300-850 with the average credit score of about 675.

Your credit score is a small number with big impact. It is a numerical expression based on an analysis of a person’s credit files. A high credit score can save you money by allowing you to qualify for the best terms and interest rates when applying for a home loan, small business loan, car loan, home improvement loan, or whatever your need may be. On the other hand, bad credit scores or no credit history has many downsides such as:

The following chart gives a glimpse of the economic impact of various credit scores. The lower the credit score, the higher the interest rate and the more interest will be paid over the life of the loan.

• Rejection for apartments, cellphone services, credit cards, and loans.

Below are a few ways to help improve your credit score:

• Higher insurance payments for cars and other property coverage. • Higher interest rates for any money you borrow which equates to thousands of extra dollars over a few years. Having a bad credit score makes many aspects of your life more difficult and expensive; rebuilding your credit can take years. Many lenders choose to use credit scoring as a tool to help them predict if a borrower will repay what is owed and repay it on time. The score gives the lender an indication of a borrower’s creditworthiness based on credit history data.

• Check your credit report. Request a free copy of your credit report annually and check it for any errors. • Reduce the amount of debt you owe. • Pay your bills on time. Delinquent payments can have a negative impact on your credit score. • Keep balances low on credit cards and other revolving credit accounts. TEEN FINANCIAL FREEDOM INSTITUTE: 10-10-80 Rule W RI T T EN BY ELLIS A O Y E WO

Creating a spiritual foundation is key to unlocking a life where your dreams can flourish plus it allows you to step into your purpose boldly. Teen Financial Freedom Institute (FFI) at Eastern Star Church not only gives youth the tools that God gives them when it comes to handling money, but it also shows them how to apply those tools in their everyday life. With a bubbly spirit and an energetic tone, 17-year old Mischaela Rapier shared the knowledge she gained from attending Teen FFI classes. Currently a senior at North Central High school, she shared the 10-10-80 rule and explained that everything belongs to God, and it’s our responsibility to give 10 percent of our first fruits for tithe, 10 percent for savings, and 80 percent to spend wisely but don’t spend it all! Sis. Rapier said that she is glad to have learned these spiritual principles about money before starting her collegiate journey at Florida A&M University next year. “If you apply what you learn, you can’t fail,” she stated. When asked what she enjoyed most about the class she responded, “I love the fact I was able to connect with other students.” Sis. Rapier also stated that after attending Teen FFI the knowledge she gained is now at the forefront of her mind

when it comes to making daily decisions. She now thinks twice when it comes to something as simple as consistently going to the vending machine to purchase snacks.

“How I look at money has shifted, and it’s important for me to stay in God’s purpose. When it comes to finances, I aim not to be rich but to be wealthy. Wealth is passed down from generation to generation. It’s not only about being blessed but continuously being a blessing to others.” The power of instilling these spiritual principles early in life transforms our youth’s thoughts, habits, and character, and gives them confidence in Christ to step into their full potential, not only in understanding their worth but being able to sow seeds for their blossoming futures as well.
