“I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.” Psalm 145:1 NLT
A Message From Our Senior Pastor
Summer 2018
As we are planning barbecues, trips to the parks/pools, and summer evenings with family and friends, take a moment to reflect and share with them how God has shaped your identity. Talk about how God’s been faithful to you; discuss your favorite scripture and witness about the goodness of God and how He has impacted your life. Don’t let the hustle and bustle of summer pursuits keep you from your ability to evangelize to others. Summer is a time for our youth to enjoy a break from school and extracurricular activities. Summer is also a great opportunity for them to learn about and get involved in youth ministries. From our Jr. Barnabas, Jr. Greeters, Jr. Ushers, and Joybelles - it’s a blessing to see youth serving and growing with their peers. Parents, I encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of serving in ministry to help advance the mission of evangelism and discipleship. Everyone has at least one spiritual gift that they could use to assist in this ministry. Another way for our teens to get connected is at the upcoming 2018 Summer Sell-Out Overnight Youth Conference. The conference will provide tools for teens to strengthen their relationship with the Lord; discuss life topics that affect them and fellowship with other teenagers in the Indianapolis community. I’ve noted just a few ways our youth can get involved; but parents, it’s vital you to get involved as well. You are the most significant role model for your children; you are their inspiration as 1 Corinthians 11:1 says, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” Blessings,
Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Senior Pastor 1

FREEDOM CONNECTIONS: A NEW BEGINNING W R I T TEN BY VALE R IE VAUG HN
Eastern Star Church Care Center provides a variety of programs and services for its members and community. Freedom Connections is a ten-week program that offers financial assistance to parents (primarily single mothers) who need rent/mortgage or utility assistance. Participants attend workshops such as confidence building, employment, and money management to empower parents to build a stronger family. The program provides more than financial assistance. The program provides encouragement, support, and hope. “There’s a lot of love and uplifting. There was so much love, I didn’t want the program to end,” said Shawnee Mason, a Freedom Connections graduate.
Sis. Mason recalls her class of ten was a close group. “We found positive things to say in the group, and about each other. Former Freedom Connections graduates returned to share their testimonies. It is not just a program, it’s a service that makes you stronger,” stated Sis. Mason. “My self-esteem has increased, and I’ll graduate from college with an associate degree in December 2018. This was an opportunity to help me find myself, and I did,” says Sis. Mason. If you would like more information on the Freedom Connections program, visit our website or call the Care Center at (317) 547-5483.

MARRIAGE: BOUND IN LOVE B Y S Y LVIA ROBERTSO N-WILCO X, J D , CP HR M
Dr. E. Anthony and Detra Warren have been married for eighteen years, are active members of the Marriage Ministry, and offer tips for a happy marriage from a biblical perspective.
EPHESIANS 5:21:
“Submitting yourselves, one to another in the fear of God.” According to the Warren’s, the scripture means to follow the example of Christ and bring honor to Him. Couples must be very careful not to listen to the world’s definition of submission.
EPHESIANS 5:21-33:
“Wives are to submit yourselves unto your husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; and he is the savior of the body. Husbands are to love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” This scripture provides specific instructions for wives and husbands. Sis. Warren states her submission to Anthony does not make her inferior to him. Nor does it grant him the power to walk over or mistreat her. It means she recognizes that God placed Anthony as the head of their house. She is his helpmate, and he values her input. Bro. Warren expounds on the husband’s role and stresses that he must have a very humbling love for his wife. This love is so strong that one would lay down his life for that love.
4
The Warrens' also provided tips on how to have a successful marriage: • Don’t let the sun go down on your anger. • Forgive completely because your spouse is going to make mistakes. Learn from them, apologize, and move forward. • Stay in the Word. Grow in your walk as a Christian.Read, study, and pray together. A three-strand cord is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12). • Take ownership of your actions. Don’t ignore the elephant in the room. Zoos or African safaris are appropriate for elephants. Not your marriage.
GENESIS 2:24 PROVIDES:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.” The Warrens say that this symbolizes that you are interconnected and woven together. Married couples should constantly work to become one flesh and make your spouse a priority, second only to God. They explained that while you may have parents, grandparents, or even children that offer unsolicited information that may be damaging to your relationship, know when to block it. Build autonomy. Welcome godly advice and input. However, in the end, it should be the two of you that are number one in the relationship.
• When an unresolved matter continues to surface, seek godly counsel immediately. Don’t wait. This is a red flag that might create a wedge or lead to resentment and bitterness. • Become a constant study of your spouse. Find out what replenishes and encourages them and do those things repeatedly. • Stay in community with others. No couple is an island. Early on and throughout your marriage, share with other Christians with the same Christian values. • Focus on keeping your marriage spiced up. Meet for lunch during the week, laugh and create new memories together, study your spouse, and try to enjoy what they enjoy. YOU TAKE THE MORNING SUNSHINE B Y I N DALAY
You take the morning Sunshine And you give it all away You sprinkle a little on everyone To cover them all day At noontime, you may pause To say a little prayer For it is working time And you cannot be there Then work day finally ends And you gather them like moss They put their arms around you As if they have been lost Then Sunshine seems to settle And just like magic dust They fall asleep beside you Because in God you trust To keep them while you’re sleeping To hold you while you rest Such mothers are so special And all deserve the best

MONEY MANAGEMENT ISN’T JUST FOR ADULTS… BY T RACI BOW M AN
Author Sabrina Lamb hosted the Do I Look Like An ATM? Seminar, based on her book by the same name, at Eastern Star Church this past May. As a feature of the Financial Freedom Institute, the seminar’s purpose was to educate parents, grandparents, guardians, and anyone who is directly connected to children and teens about having “the talk” regarding money and finances. Sis. Lamb is also the founder and CEO of Worldofmoney.org, a New York City-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing immersive financial education for youth, ages 7-18. She believes that families need to be on the same page when it comes to running a household. Youth should understand that money does not grow on trees; they should know precisely how much money it takes to run a household, so they are not surprised when it is time for them to be responsible adults.
During the seminar, Sis. Lamb engaged the audience with her knowledge and humor. She reviewed a history of money including the first black millionaire, Jeremiah G. Hamilton, during the mid-1800s. Sis. Lamb then talked about several other wealthy African Americans during the 1900s, giving attendees insight that African Americans were making strides long before Madam C.J. Walker and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Towards the end of the seminar, Sis. Lamb separated the attendees into groups based on the type of parenting style household in which they grew up. The groups discussed how being raised in a certain type of household has influenced their parenting style. Below are the different parenting styles discussed.
PARENT MONEY STYLE
PARENT’S MESSAGE TO CHILD
MESSAGE TO CHILD
DICTATOR
I fear; therefore I rule and control.
Others must think for you. And you will do as I say, not as I do.
MARTYR
My life has no value and does not deserve to be financially protected.
Because I believe you can’t earn money to stand on your own, I sacrifice myself and clean up your financial mess.
AVOIDANT
Facing my financial reality is too painful.
You can’t trust financially responsible people. Money is a distasteful subject.
DISNEYLAND
Lavishing money and material goods to my child fills in the gaps of what I did not experience in childhood.
I use money to retaliate against your other parent.
SABOTEUR
Victimhood is my power.
Financial security is for other people. You lack the power and intelligence to create a secure life.
FREEDOM
Prosperity is for ‘those people.’ Iprefer the comfort of being financially provided for.
Materialism validates me.
SAVVY
I believe that we must leave a morally sound financial education legacy.
I aim to secure your financial education along with a commitment to academic excellence and service.
The seminar concluded with Sis. Lamb encouraging attendees to have a “family business meeting” to get everyone in the household on the same page when it comes to finances. She also noted that saying daily affirmations together positively enforces what the family has learned together. A TEENAGER SALVATION STORY: PSALM 139:14 B Y S TA CEY M OORE
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 Rilynne P. is a typical bubbly teen. She’s elated that school is out for the summer. Rilynne is preparing to embark on a summer abroad trip (what to pack), pondering college choices (Indiana University or Ball State University), and majors (Performing Arts or Chemistry). She has a lot on her plate, but her focus is laser sharp and steady on God. “When I got baptized (at 13 years old at Eastern Star Church), the way I viewed the world versus the church changed. I was forgiven and not the same old Rilynne,” she stated. The rising Lawrence Central junior talked about some of the obstacles she faced, like peer pressure and how to talk about God with her friends. “It kind of puts you in a weird position—they may start talking about you and call you a hypocrite.” These encounters caused Rilynne to wonder about the “set” rules
God has in place. By attending Sunday School, she gained a clearer understanding of God. “I learned to be humble.” "After I got baptized, I realized the friends I was hanging with weren't taking me anywhere. I got into the Word to learn who I am and started living it. Then people came into my life to help me become a better me,” says Rilynne. Rilynne is active in ministry, serves on the Youth Council for Teen Church, attends Sunday School, and participated in the Mime Ministry. At Lawrence Central High School, she is part of the Show Choir and a group called Young Life (a Christian-based student club). Rilynne notes her favorite scripture, Psalm 139:14. “I have it written on my mirror so I can see it every day!” Visit our website to learn more about the Children’s and Teen’s Ministry and how to get your child involved.

T’WAS TOO MY SUFFERING B Y I N DALAY
If they think I suffered not Because you see the things I got And never saw just where I slept Or all the nights my mother wept it was of pain I was enduring With eyes I saw the suffering Our knees like dust Bent In God we trust For all her work for what she bought So I could get the things I got.

Why verify membership? It is essential for everyone to verify their membership so that the Church staff can identify those who have made a commitment to Eastern Star Church and be able to equip the member better for the work of the ministry.
Am I a member of Eastern Star Church? You are a member of Eastern Star Church if you: • Have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and; • Have completed New Member’s Orientation. Even if you attend church regularly, give consistently, and responded to the invitation to discipleship, you are not a member until you complete New Member’s Orientation. The orientation gives information about the Body of Christ and how believers are to operate in the Body of Christ. It also reviews pertinent information about Eastern Star Church, such as history, current operations, and the many ministries a member can join to use their spiritual gifts.
How to verify membership? Visit our website and click on the FOR MEMBERS tab. Under ‘Member Forms,’ click on ‘Member Information Update’ and you’ll be directed to a page to make changes to your address, phone number, email, etc. Membership Verification forms are also available at the Ushers Stations at each campus.
