“I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.” Psalm 145:1 NLT
A Message From Our Senior Pastor
Fall 2018
This summer, I felt led by the God to preach a series of messages on mental and emotional distress. Regardless of the difficult situation you may be going through, don’t quit or give up on God during these times; lean into Him by reading your Bible daily, meditating, praying, listening to past sermons on Eastern Star Church’s (ESC) website and app, and seeking professional help. In addition, the ESC Care Center is here and available to assist and provide you with resources such as counseling services. Remember, there is power in prayer and Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” For the past two years, God has taken The ROCK Initiative from level to level and glory-to-glory. In such a short amount of time, we have built homes, established a neighborhood association, completed construction on Sunstone at Arlington Woods, and equipped Arlington Woods School with much needed technology for students and teachers. Praise God! These are just a few accomplishments and none of this would be possible without Him! Turn to page two to read more about The ROCK Initiative goals and milestones. Thank you for your endless support, faithfulness, time, talent, and resources for this on-going initiative. It’s due to your abundant generosity that we are able to help the least, lonely, and left out in the 46218 community. As we continue with this year’s theme Born Identity (Mark 10:13-16 MSG), let’s come alongside our youth to help shape their identity as a child of God by connecting them to programs and events that are happening at the church this fall including Fall Revival, Hallelujah Celebration and Teen Mixer, Bible Study, Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Teen Church. 1 Timothy 4:12 states, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” Blessings,
Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Senior Pastor

THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE B Y PASTO R JAY
In Luke 4, Jesus made his purpose clear; He said,
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free." Jesus not only came preaching the kingdom of God, but he came to make sure that people were able to experience a piece of the kingdom on earth.
Jesus is not just concerned about our spiritual needs but also our mental, physical, social, and even political needs. The Bible speaks of the importance of God's people being involved in the social and political process. All throughout the Bible, we see people like Moses, Elijah, Esther, John the Baptist, and Jesus had opportunities to not only speak truth to power but they put in the effort to ensure that policies were in place to meet the needs of those who were forgotten and overlooked. One of the ways we can follow the steps of Christ to ensure that people’s physical and social needs are met through the political system is voting! I genuinely believe that Jesus would be a registered and active voter. Voting is one of the effective and essential ways for your voice to be heard. Let us all strive to be like Jesus, step out to vote, make our voices heard, hold our politicians accountable, and be engaged in our communities to ensure that people's needs are met. Let His will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10). 5
EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE b y As hley Gur vi tz
The late State Representative Bill Crawford would always say,
“If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” With the local elections swiftly approaching, it is critical to ensure you and those who want to make change for the greater good get registered to vote and get out and vote. Even on an off-presidential year, all constituencies (community stakeholders) must show up to the polls and express what changes and empowerment you want to see. The rights of people of color, women, immigrants, and other disenfranchised communities are more vulnerable than ever. Why is this important? The 2018 local and mid-term elections will decide who will be your voice at the decision tables for the following:

Want a more effective voting process that doesn’t further disenfranchise voters? Who you vote for as your County Clerk and Secretary of State plays a significant role on voting and other county licensing/permit matters. Want to see a better criminal justice, community policing, and legal proceedings? Who you vote for as your County Prosecutor, Constable, and Sheriff (to name a few) directly impact the criminal justice matters of your neighborhood. Tired of seeing businesses close and abandoned houses in your communities? Who you vote for as your County Treasurer, Assessor, Surveyor and State Representative (to name a few) directly impact local government property values, tax increment financing (TIF), and other taxation matters for your community.
It is essential to note that the elected positions above have a more direct impact on your life due to what's called home rule.
Home rule means the government within specific administrative areas (districts) have the power to govern themselves as they see fit. This provides more choice, options, flexibility, and freedom to local leaders.
While these are just a few examples, they are important examples as to why we have to get out and vote. We cannot say, “I don’t want to vote because they don’t look after my interests.” Change can be done incrementally by making sure you have your key players (elected officials) in the game (at the decision tables), so you and your community win. Being mad, frustrated, and sitting out won't make change happen. Being mad, frustrated, and sitting at the decision tables (or having elected officials that represent your interest) will make change happen. Prepare now to be seated at the table. Make sure you’re registered to vote, voting status is active, and your change of address is complete by October 9, 2018. These steps, along with a valid government issued ID, will ensure that you're able to vote on Election Day, November 6, 2018. Those who are at least 18 years of age on Election Day and also those who were formerly incarcerated can vote. If you have any questions, problems, or need to find out more about who is on your November 6 ballot, visit www.indianavoters.com.

SUNDAY IS MY BETTER DAY B Y I N DALAY
If I can tell you how I feel of a mother being real I don’t want to be alone I am an adult yet a child and when I’m alone my feelings run wild. Sometimes I feel childless and all alone I don’t know when they all left home I use to feed them one by one but now they say my work is done I don’t want to feel this way I fight this feeling every day But, Arising to a quiet house not a child’s voice or a spouse to say good morning or what’s your plan sometimes it seems all I can stand They say that lonely and being alone don’t really mean the same but no matter how I separate them this feeling still remains. Now Sunday is my better day the church bus comes so I can pray I shed the lonely of the week and on that day i never speak of what it’s like to be alone but praise my God for all he’s done.

FINANCIAL FREEDOM INSTITUTE - TEEN INVESTMENT SERIES B Y T R A C I B O WMA N
The Teen Investment Series is a 12-week program that teaches teens about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, credit and how it works, and the importance of protecting their identity. They also learn about college options and the costs associated with college along with entrepreneurship. The initial spring session was very successful and impactful for the teens who participated. The teens were divided into teams and were given the opportunity to develop portfolios based on companies they chose. They decided as a team on how much to invest in each company. The teams then competed to see which portfolio gained the highest percentage over the duration of the program.
Since the stock market is unpredictable, it was exciting to see the anticipation on their faces each week as the stats were posted. The class never knew who was going to be the winner. The teens not only gained the knowledge of investing but also received an "investment" for participating. Eastern Star Church is committed to helping our teens understand how to handle finances the right way – God’s way through Financial Freedom Institute (FFI). FFI teaches participants how to be PRODUCERS not just consumers! To get your teen involved in Teen FFI classes, visit our website and click on the FINANCIAL FREEDOM INSTITUTE tab.

GOD IS UP TO SOMETHING – A MEMBER’S SALVATION STORY BY R O B B IE FLIPPIN, ESQ .
Gary Turnipseed, like so many of us, grew up in the church. Bro. Turnipseed was even more intimately connected with the church from birth, as he is the son of the late Reverend Lizzie Turnipseed, former Bishop of St. Paul Spiritual Church of Griffin, Georgia. Rev. Turnipseed raised his children in the admonition of Christ. It was at the age of two, when his father passed, that Bro. Turnipseed came to know and rely on the Holy Spirit as a father figure. Time progressed and Bro. Turnipseed enlisted in the military in his 20s, eventually landing in Indianapolis as a result of his then fiancé’s newfound job prospect. As life changed, he found himself distanced from the body of Christ. As God often does, He brings about strife and uneasy circumstances in our lives to draw us back to Him. This is exactly what happened to Bro. Turnipseed: career uncertainty, in addition to the subsequent dissolution of his marriage, drew him even closer to God, and into a deeper connection with the body of Christ. In this murky period in his life, God showed Bro. Turnipseed his career purpose and his calling in ministry.
10
Today, Bro. Turnipseed is in the Ministers in Training program and in his fifth year in the Evangelical Committee. He is satisfied and complete in his single-ness, understanding that he can better fine-tune and foster his gifts, to ensure he is the best kingdom husband if it is in God's plan when the time presents itself. Reflecting on the tumultuous period in his life, Bro. Turnipseed says that developing as a Christian in the body of Christ is about growing as one in the spirit. “The break-up shattered me, but I discovered God is up to something. There is a daily struggle overcoming the emotion of that day.” He, as we all do, often asks God, why? Bro. Turnipseed takes comfort in knowing that God is up to something. “Rely on the Holy Spirit, day by day and doors will be open; keep moving.”
THANK GOD FOR JAMS B Y I N DALAY
My life was stuck like a traffic jam The lights were all red I don’t know who I am I looked in the mirror to see if I could exit But all it reflected was my life.
There were no exit ramps, detours, or bends And in the mirror it revealed my sins The earthly things I choose to believe Like the word forgiveness was all about me.
I went to church and I paid my tithes So who was in the mirror I didn’t recognize Then it dawned on me what the pastor said You can sit in a pew and not get fed.
I smiled so bright… I looked so fresh No one saw my pain from my outside dress… But now I’m stuck and thank God for jams A moment of reflection revealed who I am. 11
WHY AFRICAN AMERICANS AVOID MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING B Y CHR IS MAB R E Y As a mental health therapist and Exhortation Manager at Eastern Star Church (ESC) Care, I find it troubling that so many African Americans are reluctant to make use of the therapeutic solutions to the emotional hurdles we face every day. In suburban neighborhoods, many people and pets have a therapist. For many, counseling appointments with a therapist are as common as pedicures and massages. I recall a client who came to see me and was dealing with the loss of a loved one. She was ashamed to talk about it for fear of being seen as weak. “Just pray, have faith, and the pain and sadness will all go away is what one family member told her. I believe in the power of prayer but also believe that faith without works is dead. James 2:14-26 reminds us that if you are not given the tools to survive then what good does it do? With so many suicides and high rates of stress-related illnesses the question needs to be asked, why do so many African Americans choose to suffer in silence rather than seek treatment?
STATS The American Psychological Association states that African Americans are less likely to seek mental health services than their white counterparts.Twenty percent of African Americans report having some severe psychological distress compared with non-Hispanic Whites.
REASONS FOR NOT SEEKING TREATMENT There are many reasons for not seeking help when it comes to dealing with the problems of life. The stigma associated with counseling has been the most prominent reason why African Americans do not seek therapy. Mistrust of the medical profession is also one of the reasons many cite for not seeking help. Historically, healthcare providers have provided horrific and catastrophic care to African Americans like in the case of the Tuskegee Airmen, or Henrietta Lacks - a poor African-American woman who doctors, without permission removed her cancerous cells to use for medical research. The advances in cancer treatment due to her contributions are still being used today. Medical neglect makes many African-Americans weary of utilizing the services provided by the healthcare profession. The cost can be another reason some do not seek treatment. Many believe counseling is only for the wealthy or the elite. For others, seeking therapy may be seen as a sign of weakness. There is also a fear of being labeled "crazy." 12
SOLUTIONS Educating the African-American community about the importance of understanding mental health disorders and treatment are critical to reducing the barriers associated with counseling. Fortunately, Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. understands the importance of spiritual and mental health and has made counseling available to the members of ESC. The Bible instructs us to seek wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14 suggests that where there is no counsel, the people will fail, and in counsel there is safety. It is imperative that the mental health profession work hard to demystify therapy and make it more accessible to a community plagued by violence and despair. It is the therapist/ counselor job to foster a safe place to seek counsel and remove the discomfort of asking others for help. Counseling is for everyone, and the ESC Care Center is here to help provide you with the support and tools you can use to live a healthier and happier life.
Finally, many believe that problems in the family should only be discussed with the family. All of these reasons may hinder your breakthrough for mental and physical well-being.
