A Message From Our Senior Pastor

Over the past few months there have been significant changes that have happened here at Eastern Star Church. We’ve upgraded our technology, implemented e-Giving and made several internal adjustments. And, as you can see, the Chronicles has now evolved into EXALT. In Psalm 34:3 it states, “Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.” (NLT) Eastern Star Church will forever be the place where “Jesus is Exalted and the Word is Explained.” However, we must update our methods. In the 21st Century, we have to be open to doing things a bit differently. And, to support those changes we have had to make a few staffing modifications. You’ll see a lot of the same faces, people who are still very vital to this ministry, just in different positions. You’ll also see several new faces, people who are bringing their expertise, energy and a different point of view. As our church continues to become more intergenerational, so will our staff. We are in a new season. In the next several weeks we will share the new organizational structure of Eastern Star Church. Throughout this year, we will continue to provide you updates on the growth and development of this ministry. While a lot of things have changed or will change, there are a few things that definitely won’t: l We

will not change our message. We will continue to be biblically-based and

centered on Jesus Christ. l We

will not change our mission. We will continue to save and nurture souls.

We are excited about where God is taking this ministry as we continue to be a blessing to our members, the community and the world. God bless you,

Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. 4

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28: 16-20 NIV

This year Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr., Eastern Star Church (ESC) senior pastor, shared with the congregation that God has given him a new vision for ESC. How will this new vision impact you? One way is through our weekly bible study classes. Recently, we enjoyed a new way of doing bible study. For six weeks we had traditional study at each campus led by Pastor Jeffrey (Jay) Allen Johnson II, Associate Pastor of Preaching and Instruction. He did an awesome study in the book of Revelation, titled “Sincerely Jesus.” To keep the momentum going, we are going to rotate

upcoming bible studies and classes. Every six weeks, you will have the opportunity to choose from two dynamic classes at your local campus. Each class will rotate to all three ESC campuses. Engaging topics will be presented to help you in your Christian walk, giving you the opportunity to share with others. There will also be stimulating class discussions on issues that are plaguing us today as Christians. Below is the schedule of classes and campuses offered for this year. Be sure and mark your calendar to attend. Can’t wait to see you there!

by Kourtney Sterling It’s no secret that millions of churches across the country are struggling with millennial participation including Eastern Star Church (ESC). From the biggest mega church to the smallest store front church, most millennial members are not engaged in ministry or the activities of the church. The 18-35 year old millennial generation also known as the “selfie” generation are known for their technology, progressive thinking and narcissistic attitude. The young adult population is a great part of ESC. Every week millennials flock to service and every week millennials join ESC, however participation past Sunday service is lacking.

What’s the problem?

Millennial member Lukau Matuka believes, “We as millennials need that extra push or accountability; if it doesn’t necessarily come directly to us we are not going to go out and pursue something such as ministry.” When asked about the activities of the church Lukau stated, “I think a lot of millennials at Eastern Star are not aware of all the ministries and serving options the church has to offer, however I do see a lot of that changing this year as the church places heavy emphasis on technology and engaging millennials.” Pastor Jay Allen Johnson believes, “Millennials don’t participate in ministry because somewhere along the way we have picked up the belief that just ‘coming to church’ on Sunday is sufficient for our spiritual journey. We believe that an hour on Sunday and a 8

posted Sunday selfie qualifies us for right standing with God. God requires us to move beyond our ‘just coming to church’ mentality and work together in an attempt to advance God’s kingdom. The Civil Rights movement was a success in the 60’s because the body of Christ understood the importance of not ‘just coming to church’ but participating in something bigger than themselves as they did their part in advancing the Kingdom of God.”

Part of the solution

The Millennial Focus Group (MFG) was formed by staff members of the church in August 2014. The MFG consists of twenty millennials who are all involved in different areas of the church and attend different church campuses. The main objective of the focus group is to find ways to increase millennial involvement in the church service, leadership and ministry. Last year, the MFG created and distributed a survey that was targeted towards millennials to get a better idea of why millennials are coming to church but not participating past Sunday morning. The survey results concluded that millennials have a knowledge deficit in church activities, events and ministries. The survey also concluded that some activities, events and ministries don’t fit with the days and times that they are available to participate. With these survey results in mind, ESC is hosting a conference for young adults. The Beyond This Moment conference will take place in an effort to increase participation and fellowship among the 18-35 year old group. The main objective for the Beyond This Moment conference is to challenge

EXALT Eastern Star Church Spring 2015

millennials to participate in ministry and to create a positive impact in their community. Through workshops, a new member’s class and other ministry opportunities, the church believes that this conference will encourage inactive millennials to step up and get involved! Our Beyond This Moment conference will take place May 29-31, 2015 and will kick-off with a night of comedy from Marcus D. Wiley of The Yolanda Adams Morning Show with great performances by various local artists! Saturday will consist of a powerful worship service, workshops, lunch, fellowship, and an event to remember called The Real Preachers of Indy!

Beyond Ourselves

God has placed his precious gifts in us and to see them lay dormant is an injustice to the God we serve. Millennials cannot let the characteristics of the generation influence our interactions with God. We are the next generation of leaders for this church and we cannot let our faith and community suffer from our lack of commitment. We must use our gifts to serve, teach, empower, encourage and ultimately lead others to Christ. We as millennials must reach beyond ourselves, our circumstances, and our lack of knowledge and understand that ministry, and most importantly God requires more of our time, gifts and treasures than a Sunday service. We all have a gift and purpose that God has placed within us to help glorify the body of Christ and community. Reach beyond yourself and be part of the solution, join other young adults at the Beyond This Moment conference May 29-31, 2015!

It’s time to start thinking of warm weather, sunny days, fun and summertime, but most of all Vacation Bible School (VBS). This year’s focus is on the family. VBS will have something for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. We will have fun filled activities, crafts and classes for the children. This year the children will have lessons focused on Jesus the True Superhero!!! Savior + Protector + Provider - Ephesians 6:1. Each day the children will learn about a superhero in the bible. The teens will have special activities, new lessons filled with lots energy and excitement. The Young Adults and T he Crew will have engaging conversations about the gray areas in life, when things are not always black and white. This year, we are adding something new: three days of classes targeted for families. Topics will cover balancing act, finding time for God, family, work and activities; blended family, conflict resolution; Christian principles, taught by blogger Dr. D, the parent trainer; and, communication just to name a few. There will be two days of classes just for ladies only and classes for men only. And back by popular demand, traditional adult VBS, taught by Pastor Michael Bryant from Westside Baptist Church. Vendors will be on hand sharing their products and

services. Friday evening will finish with dramatic class presentations and the big “End of VBS Celebration!” Please mark your calendar for Monday, June 15 to Friday, June 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Cooper Rd. Campus. Stay tuned to www.easterstarchurch.org for monthly updates. Bring the entire family out for a week of good Christian fun—the Jesus way.

illennials acknowledge the importance of eating healthy, but admit that we don’t always eat as healthy as we would like. It’s not because we don’t want to; but “life” can get in the way. Like lack of time and we eat things “on the go” or we get short on cash and eat junk food that’s cheaper than healthier choices (at least in the short run). So what are some ways we can begin taking charge of

our health? Just tiny tweaks in our health can make big changes. For example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work, parking farther from the office or store and walking, and simply adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets. Since I’m not a health professional here are some ideas and resources that can help you work out your own plan and take charge of your own health: l Social Media—Build a network of Facebook friends that support each other in eating, exercising and staying healthy l Mobile Apps—Download free mobile apps that track calories, exercise, heart rate, etc.: S health, Fooducate, Fitocracy, etc. l Websites— www.choosemyplate.gov, www.myfitnesspal.com, www.visitindy. com/indianapolis-farmer-markets l Eastern Star Church Resources—Garden on the Go (affordable and high quality fruit and vegetables—cash, credit, debit and SNAP EBT cards accepted) at Eastern Star Church, Tuesdays, 11:00–11:45 a.m. l ESC Recreation Activities—Cecil Sinkfield at csinkfield@easternstarchurch.org. Blessings! “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

By Pastor Terrance Bridges While the school year is creeping closer and closer to its end with summer, the work of Eastern Star Church Salt Youth Ministry is continuing to move forward. The spring term will be filled with opportunities to participate in worship, bible study, and community service. FAITH and FUTURE BUILDING The Eastern Star Salt Youth Ministry will continue to join together from all three campuses each Wednesday night for the SALT Youth Fellowship held at the main campus in the banquet room and gymnasium from 6:30–8:00 p.m. Pastor T and student worship leaders will lead the youth through a series of messages about embracing the Christian life in its fullness through identifying, understanding, and living in biblical holiness. Here are some of the exciting upcoming events: l Youth fellowship fun days which are incorporated as the last Wednesday of each month and themed with activities such as the game truck, board games, monthly birthday celebrations, and teen crowd mixers. This will allow the youth from the various campuses to form friendships and peer support groups as they live out their faith. l April 18, 2015 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the Cooper Road Campus will be the College Readiness Seminar for juniors and seniors in high school. We will discuss issues regarding college life, study skills, financial management, and scholarship resources. With the start of each new-year, it is common that individuals take a look back at the previous year to reflect on the challenges they faced as well as the successes and accomplishments they experienced. This is true not only on a personal level but it is also true in our marriages as well. By evaluating our personal lives and relationships, we can seek ways to reenergize, grow our faith and move forward into the future with greater unity. So, as each of us look to establish goals for 2015, the Eastern Star Church Marriage Ministry wants to encourage all of the married couples to consider ways to recharge your marriage. Come together, closer as a couple and make a pledge to get involved in the Marriage Ministry activities in 2015. We want to hear from you, so please share your suggestions, comments and ideas with us. We want to encourage you and your spouse to make an even stronger effort to come out and participate in the couple’s events, hosted throughout the year. You will have a great time in fellowship with other married, Christian couples; as you receive encouragement, support and learn how to strengthen and recharge your marriage. We are looking forward to what God is going to do this year and want you and your spouse to be a part of the movement. So, whether 2014 was a complete success for you or even if it was filled with challenges and struggles, please be encouraged by the words found in 1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Let’s continue to work together to make 2015 a great time of celebrating God’s love in our marriages.

By Pastor Terrance Bridges The time has come once again to prepare for graduations and the transition for our high school seniors to the college life experience. Eastern Star Church has always placed a high value on education and this year will be no exception to the church’s financial support of qualifying high school graduates. Beginning on the 3rd Sunday, April 19, 2015 scholarship applications will be made available at all campuses for students who wish to be considered for an Eastern Star Scholarship. This year will include a college readiness seminar as one of the requirements for the scholarship. The dates and times for those seminars are: Saturday, April 18, 2015 or Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the Cooper Road Campus. The details for this seminar will also be listed in the scholarship application. If you are a high school senior or a parent or caregiver with a student that will be graduating from high school in 2015 and want to improve their chances of meeting the guidelines, here are a few quick tips: 1) Check your student’s membership status. You can do this by simply calling the church office and asking for their member ID number and/or envelope number. You can also email the church office at reception@easternstarchurch. org. Be sure to include the full name of your son or daughter. Sometimes parents and students assume they are members of the church because they have attended for so long or been baptized in a joint communion

16

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

College Rediness Seminar: Saturday, April 18, 2015 or Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the Cooper Road Campus Applications Accepted: Sunday, April 19, 2015— June 27, 2015 Eligibility: High School Graduates with at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) who will attend school in the fall service. Unfortunately, they find out too late that we have no record of their decision to join the Eastern Star Church family. 2) Encourage your student to keep his or her GPA up. Students must have an overall GPA of a 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. 3) Meet the deadlines. The sooner you can collect the necessary documents and send them in the better. Missing the deadline is one of the top reasons many applicants have failed to receive the award over the years. This can be avoided by collecting all the necessary documents as soon as you can and sending them as one completed package before the application period expires. 4) Attend the college readiness seminar. Students must attend one of the two college readiness seminars in its entirety and obtain a certificate of completion to be considered for an ESC scholarship. Those students who do not attend the readiness seminar will be ineligible for an Eastern Star

EXALT Eastern Star Church Spring 2015

Church scholarship. The dates for the seminars are Saturday, April 18, 2015 or Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the Cooper Road Campus 5) Check each document carefully before mailing. Be sure to cross check all the items in your application packet with the required documents listed in the guidelines before sending. An incomplete packet is another unfortunate mistake that causes students to miss out on the scholarship award. The application process begins on Sunday, April 19, 2015 and ends Saturday, June 27. All materials must be postmarked by Saturday, June 27. Again, this scholarship is only open to recent high school graduates heading off to college in the fall of 2015. For more information feel free to call the scholarship hotline at 591-5390. Press 4, then 2, then 7 or email scholarship@easternstarchurch.org.

In fact, from the first song Hammond invites us to become active participants in what he calls a “Festival of Praise.” From his days with the legendary group Commissioned to his chart-topping solo career, Hammond has always delivered music with power. His twelfth solo project, I Will Trust is a timely collection of songs that speak to the uncertainties many people have in an era where crime, terrorism and temptation are constantly on the airwaves. Selections such as the up-tempo, Latin-flavored “I Believe,” the gorgeous title track and the majestic “It’s Only the Conqueror” remind us that we can receive peace and victory in Christ when we trust the Lord. Hammond’s shimmery tenor is as pristine as ever. He can also still produce

Lecrae Anamoly HH 1/2 If you like hip-hop then you will love Lecrae’s seventh studio project, Anamoly. Musically, Anamoly has the hard beats, clever rhymes and other ingredients needed for a strong hip hop disc that could be played at a hyped party or on the radio. Lecrae can engage listeners with his fast, rhythmic and smooth flow. “Say I Wont” and “Nuthin’” swing out hard against the worldly vices that can distract young people from their purpose. On the scathing America and the illuminating “Dirty Water,” Lecrae addresses the roots of today’s challenges in the African American community and America in general. From a lyrical and spiritual perspective, however, the only drawback with

Anamoly is that on some songs, the power of Christ seems to be more in the background than at the forefront. It does a great job of raising important issues but doesn’t consistently showcase the solution: an individual and collective lifestyle change through Christ. Still, Anamoly’s social and spiritual message is exponentially better than non-Christian selections in the secular world. Lecrae proves that in today’s hip hop community a successful album can be real without being profane. Anamoly is recommended for devoted hip-hop listeners.

The Walls Group Fast Forward HHH Gospel music star Kirk Franklin has often said that when he first saw The Walls Group they were too good for him to pass up. Fast Forward, their debut project from his Fo Yo Soul record company, shows us what makes them stand out. The Walls Group includes siblings Darrel, Rhea, Paco and Ajah Walls, who range in age from 17

to 24 years. They have become the latest family singing sensation thanks to their energetic style, impressive harmonies, and songs that are fun to sing along with. Unlike most family groups that usually center on one or two star vocalists, each of the Walls singers can carry a lead verse with skill and unique flavor. Their enthusiasm for Christ is contagious on songs like “Love On the Radio” and the catchy “Big Brother,” which showcases the choir-based vocal interplay Franklin used on his best classics. The Walls Groups clearly invites listeners to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. However, they don’t do it in a serious “fire and brimstone” way. Nor do they promise that everything will always be easy once you become a Christian. Instead, are invited to go on the greatest adventure you will ever experience with the one who has the world in His hands, but also cares to know you personally. In other words, as “Satisfied” explains, no matter what happens there will always be hope. The Walls Group’s musical style is obviously tailored for people in their own age group, however, listeners of all ages can benefit from hearing Fast Forward.

By Patricia Jones, MHA, RDN, LD Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is important for good health. You are probably thinking, why is she talking about fruits and vegetables, after fasting for 40 days with mainly fruits and vegetables? I know, I know. But let me ask you. Do you feel better? Doesn’t your skin look better? Aren’t you moving better? If the answers to the questions are yes and even if some of you say no. I am going to tell you why. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) new guidelines states that we should be eating 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables, depending on the number of calories you need. Very few Americans consume the amount of vegetables recommended as part of healthy eating patterns. Based on many national studies the average American eats about three servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Wow, that’s a big difference. 22

Three reasons support the recommendation for Americans to eat more vegetables and fruits. First, most vegetables and fruits are major contributors of a number of nutrients that are under consumed in the United States. Nutrients in fresh fruits and vegetables work together. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are reviewed every five years, say that foods are the best sources of nutrients because they contain naturally occurring ingredients, like carotenoids and flavonoids. Research studies in the past five to 10 years, have found that vitamin supplements don’t provide the benefits that foods do. Second, fruits and vegetables may prevent many illnesses. Studies show that consumption of vegetables and fruits is associated with reduced risk of many chronic diseases. Specifically, cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack and stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even some forms of cancer. Third, most vegetables and fruits,

EXALT Eastern Star Church Spring 2015

when prepared without added fats or sugars, are relatively low in calories and loaded with fiber and water, which create a feeling of fullness. This is particularly helpful for dieters who want more filling calories. Plus, that fiber helps keep you “regular.” Eating them instead of higher calorie foods can help adults and children achieve and maintain a healthy weight. When adding fruits and vegetables to your diet, remember that variety is the spice of life. It’s important to eat produce of various colors because each fruit or vegetable offers a different nutrient, think of it as nutritional cross-training. Trying new foods can be exciting, and be sure to sample every color in the produce rainbow. The right number of servings of fruits and vegetables for you all depends on your daily caloric intake needs. A good way to find out how many servings you should be eating is by using an online serving calculator. Or, better yet, eat a fruit or vegetable at every meal and snack. Don’t let cost, season, or accessibility, affect your fruit- and vegetable-friendly diet. All varieties of produce, like frozen, canned (low-sodium), or dried is at your finger tip, if you find that fresh is difficult to obtain. Someone once said, “The power of prevention may lie in a salad bowl or a plate of fruit. When we take advantage of produce, our bodies return the favor by reducing our risk of developing various illnesses.” Remember that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Take care of it and God will take care of you.

GOD IS DOING A NEW THING! EASTERN STAR CHURCH, OVERSEAS COUNCIL & STEP SEMINARY (HAITI) A new chapter was opened in our 18-year partnership with Overseas Council, during the summer of 2014. The Director of JEWEL Human Services, Darnae’ Scales, Pastor Terrance Bridges, Eastern Star Church, Associate Pastor of Youth and two Overseas Council representatives traveled to Haiti to meet with the President of the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Port-AuPrince (“STEP”), Dr. Wadestrant JeanBaptiste, and his key staff. During their visit to the STEP campus and the capital city surrounding it, they strengthened their friendship and investigated participation in a program created by Overseas Council that is called the Church and Seminary Partnership, or “CaSP”. The CaSP is intended to bring the hearts, resources, and vision of a strong, passionate Christian seminary overseas into creative and impactful partnership with the heart, resources, and vision of a similarly strong, passionate church located within the United States. By combining the abundant spiritual gifts and other resources within Eastern Star Church and the STEP seminary, with the Latin American and Caribbean regional resources

of Overseas Council, these leaders agreed to work together with the expectation of moving to new levels of excellence in evangelism, outreach and discipleship. By doing so, Eastern Star Church, JEWEL Human Services, STEP and Overseas Council will endeavor to glorify God, build His church, and enable Christians to grow and flourish in both Haiti and the United States as conversations and visits take place between Indianapolis and Port-Au-Prince. For example, in March of 2015, Pastor Johnson was the keynote speaker at a conference at the seminary hosted by the President of STEP, Dr. Wadestrant Jean-Baptiste. The conference topic was “The Role of Spiritual Gifts To Your Ministry and the Church.” It was attended by graduates of STEP and hundreds of Christian pastors from various cities throughout Haiti. Pastor Johnson and President Jean-Baptiste asked the saints of Eastern Star Church and STEP to keep this new CaSP relationship in fervent prayer. And we look forward to the great things God will do through this partnership in 2015 and beyond.

Two parents share their story of raising children with Autism Spectrum Disorder 26

Kristian Little, Eastern Star Church Director of Communications, tells her story of how her son Jacob was diagnosed with autism and the affects it has had on their lives. Seven years ago my life changed forever. My only child, a beautiful baby boy, entered my life 2 1/2 months ahead of schedule. I named him Jacob, because in the Bible, Jacob was chosen by God for greatness. I knew my Jacob was destined for greatness as well. Initially, Jacob had no major problems. He was developing at an age appropriate rate and in some areas ahead of schedule. But just after his first birthday, things began to change. I noticed that when he wasn’t looking directly at me, and when I would call his name, he wouldn’t respond. He wasn’t babbling anymore and didn’t even attempt to say words. Not even mama. He didn’t really play with his toys in an appropriate manner. He seemed

EXALT Eastern Star Church Spring 2015

more interested in investigating how a toy worked than actually enjoying it. He also had no interest in anything that didn’t have music. Some friends and family members said, “He’ll be fine. He just likes music.” Or, “every child is different. Don’t worry about it.” But I knew better. My greatest fears became reality when Jacob went for his 18-month appointment. All of the questions were about development and I answered the questions the best I could. His doctor reviewed my answers, and said, “We think Jacob may have autism. I need you to set up an appointment with an audiologist, call the First Steps program to set up an evaluation, and you need to set up an appointment with a pediatric psychologist.” I just froze. I had so many questions going through my mind and could not say a word. I gathered my things and my son and got out of that office as fast as I could. Once I got to my car I began to cry. I thought, “This couldn’t be happening.” Jacob had been fighting since he’d been in this world and prevailed. And now, we have to deal with this? It just wasn’t fair. Though I was angry, I kept moving forward. Jacob is now seven years-old and has received speech,

occupational and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, for the past 5 1/2 years. He is now attending kindergarten full-time in a mainstream classroom. I’ve continued to do research, am very involved with his school and therapists, and I continue to look for extracurricular activities to help him with his social skills.

Pastor Terrance Bridges, Eastern Star Church’s Associate Pastor of Youth, shares his journey with his son, Terrance II.

Autism affects 1 in every 68 children nationwide. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Until Terrance was 2 years old, he seemed fine. He was hitting all of his milestones, but then he began to really seclude himself. He wouldn’t respond when we would call his name so at first we thought it was his hearing. The preschool he attended did an assessment on him and suggested that Terrance was mentally retarded and that we seek out a specialist. However, we initially sought counsel from his pediatrician who said he’d be fine and that we had nothing to worry about. My gut told me differently, so we got a second opinion. The doctor didn’t get halfway through his assessment before he diagnosed Terrance with autism. His mother, and grandmother, who had experience working with children with special needs, immediately began researching autism but it was a little harder for me to accept. I kept thinking, “Will he be able to live a normal life?” “Will he ever experience the highlights of life, like love and marriage? “What about the continuation of our family line? Will he ever have children?” “Will I ever have an empty nest?” “Who will care for him after I’m gone?” As time has gone on, I’ve grown to accept that he will have the best life that he possibly can. But what that looks like is still unknown. Terrance has made major improvements and has received speech, occupational and ABA therapy along the way. Seeing other high functioning children and adults has also been encouraging. It made me realize that he’s not damaged, he’s different. His ability to think quicker and sense things in people at a higher level than a typical child/adult is amazing. His musical ability is wonderful and his memory is impeccable. Terrance’s disability has also made me more sensitive to those with special needs within the ministry. I’ve

come in contact with several children at Eastern Star who have special needs since I’m over Children’s Church. And, unfortunately all of the parents haven’t been forthright with that information. I would just like to encourage all parents to share if their child has a disability and not to be ashamed. I want them to understand that your child is not oridinary…they are EXTRAordinary, and we want to come alongside and support you. Today Terrance is nine years-old and attends public school. He’s in the third grade and does have to attend special intervention classes. He’s reading above level and he’s at level in math. His comprehension level isn’t where it needs to be…yet. But, we’ll continue to move forward and know that he’s doing his very best. Autism affects 1 in every 68 children nationwide. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. While research is being done constantly, they have no idea what causes it. What is known is that early intervention is key. There is no time to wait and hope things will turn out OK. Your child’s life, his future, is at stake. There are resources out there and most will work with you regardless of your financial situation.
