“I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.” Psalm 145:1 NLT
A Message From Our Senior Pastor
October 2017
Your commitment to this ministry continues to show God’s unwavering love. I cannot express how thankful I am for the outpouring of support for our ongoing community development with The ROCK Initiative. Not only are you impacting lives right here in our city, but also the lives in Haiti; as noted before, for each house we build in 46218, we will build a house in Port-au-Prince. To all of you who have registered to volunteer with the build of two Habitat for Humanity homes, praise God! Even though we just recently started construction of these homes within the past few weeks, we’ve made much progress. For 23 days, more than 500 volunteers will donate 3,000 work hours for the build. Thank you to all volunteers and community partners for your hard work and dedication. Much like the building of homes, Eastern Star Church offers plenty of opportunities to build your relationship with Christ and your ESC family. I invite you and your family to grow in and with our Fall Revival featuring Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, the Hallelujah Celebration and Hallelujah Teen Mixer, Noon Day and Evening Bible Study, Sunday School classes, and much more. As we welcome in the holiday season, let’s not forget to assist those who are the least, lonely, and left out. Show “love lived out” this season by donating your time, talent, and treasure to our Care Center or a local shelter, a neighbor, family, or friend. 2 Corinthians 9:12 states, “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” Last but not least, continue to keep those who were affected by natural disasters in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico, in your thoughts and prayers as they restore, repair, and rebuild their lives, cities, and countries. Blessings,
Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Senior Pastor 1
Greeter Ministry: More Than a Simple Hello Written by Phyllis Kendall
The Greeter Ministry is more than, “a simple hello.” When asked the minimum requirements for being a greeter, Elihue Ackerson from the Fishers Campus responded,
“Bring a big smile and let God’s light shine through you while welcoming people into the church.” We all know how receiving a warm and friendly smile can help salvage a bad day and make a good day even better. The Greeter Ministry, established in August 2003, is responsible for ensuring every member and visitor feels the love of Christ as they enter the church for Sunday service, Bible Study, or a special church event. The Bible verse for the ministry is Joshua 24:15, “…but as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” When asked why they joined the ministry, both Bonnie Robinson and Kevin Givens from the Main Campus stated they had a gift for hospitality. Felecia Collins from the Cooper Road Campus said it was Pastor Johnson’s message that, “coming to church alone is not all God wants his children to do and that serving in His kingdom is part of building the kingdom up.” Whatever your reason for joining, being warm and friendly is an essential characteristic of a great greeter.
The Greeter Ministry recently began serving as guest ambassadors for the new Guest Connections center, an initiative that developed from the desire to make our guests feel welcome. First-time visitors complete the guest connection form and are given a gift from the church. More importantly, visitors are given the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Barnabas Ministry and Worship Team if they are ready to join the church or just need prayer. Ray Lynch, President of the Greeter Ministry, said that in the future, the ministry would add junior greeters. The Greeter Ministry does not have a regular meeting time, but you can always ask one of the more than 200 greeters for more information about the ministry. If you are an active member of Eastern Star Church who loves the Lord and people and are interested in joining a ministry, visit our website and click on the MINISTRIES tab then SERVICE or call (317) 591-5050 ext. 232 for more information.

Men of Purpose: The Man God Uses Written by Barbara A. Walker
Men of Purpose – M.O.P.
– is a ministry established to promote discipleship, fellowship, and service of men. This year, the M.O.P is using a book by Henry Blackaby’s, “The Man God Uses” as a study guide. To date, the ministry covered seven lessons from the book which highlight looking at your character to gain a better understanding of how God shapes the man He chooses. As so often is true, the one who is charged to teach God’s Word finds the spotlight shining on them. Jeffrey Bellamy certainly found this to be true! He said, “As the facilitator and student of the lessons I taught, I gained better insight into the characters in the Bible that God used, like David, the anointed shepherd boy, and his transition into his God-ordained destiny of becoming King David.” Based on that, it seems obvious that these lessons have helped Bro. Bellamy see himself more clearly. As they reflected upon the study materials, the men began developing more insightful ways to honestly look at their character. When asked which topics impacted the men the most and created real dialogue, Bro. Bellamy said, “I think it was around looking at a man’s character like an open floor plan, with rooms that we expose to certain people depending on our relationship. It was also about realizing that even when we aren’t aware of it, we are treating God the same way, only letting Him into certain parts of our lives. But God sees all and knows all that we have in our hearts.” Men would benefit from attending M.O.P. meetings! In this environment, men begin to understand that they are not on an island, no matter where they are in life. Satan wants to keep us isolated and away from other spiritual brothers who can share the grace and mercy of God. As men of God who have the authority and responsibility to be leaders on the earth, this ministry offers a great opportunity to learn and grow.
Remember,“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Men of Purpose meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Main Campus. For more information about Men of Purpose, visit our website by clicking on the MINISTRIES tab then ADULTS or call the (317) 591-5050 ext. 115.

Hallelujah Celebration and Teen Mixer Costume Ideas Written by Robbie Flippin, Esq.
It’s that time of year again! The leaves are beginning to change colors, we’re exchanging sandals for boots, and one of the most fun-filled celebrations, for children, is upon us is the Hallelujah Celebration! Eastern Star Church will continue its tradition of holding the annual Christian- styled take on a Halloween party- the Hallelujah Celebration for children three – eleven years old. And, this year they will host a Hallelujah Teen Mixer for ages 12 – 18 years old. Naturally, the first thought that comes to mind is, “What is my child going to be this year?” Pinterest and Facebook contain a wealth of costume ideas – monsters, goons, and goblins modeled after today’s popular horror movies. Christians, knowing we are set apart from the secular world, should frame our behavior and costumes, accordingly. Pinterest and Facebook contain many positive costumes ideas that you can create at home, no need to break the bank. Dressing your child as a notable Bible character is very inexpensive and easy. Keyword: flat sheets! Flat sheets will help jazz up most costumes. After this, modify according to notable physical attributes. For a Moses costume, use a cane as a staff, flat sheets, and belts. For a Samson costume, simply add a wig for long hair. Creativity is key! Styling your little one as an animal is always cute and harmless! The key is emphasizing positive traits we associate with each.
4
Lions and Tigers- their strength! Baby deer- their gracefulness. These are only a few ideas. Check out Pinterest and scour the “Do It Yourself” section of Costumes for Children and Teenagers. Let’s continue to steer our youth toward positive figures throughout the year, not just during Halloween: this can undoubtedly foster positive self-image down the road. Don’t forget to bring your children and teens to the Hallelujah Celebration and Teen Mixer on October 27 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Main Campus! There will be food, fun, music, and fellowship! It will be fun for all! If you’d like to donate candy for the celebration, you can do so after services through October 22. Additionally, donations can be dropped off at the Main Campus church office during regular business hours. We will also provide candy bins under the canopies at each campus for easy, drive-thru access for an hour after each service on October 15 and 22. Please remember no cookies, popcorn, or nuts of any kind. There are opportunities for volunteers to assist with bagging candy before the event, greeting, facilitating games, preparing and serving food, and assisting with decorations. Make this celebration a success by volunteering! Email youthmin@easternstarchurch.org or call (317) 591-5050 ext. 154.
Why is Compounding Interest Important? Written by Valerie Vaughn
Financial Freedom Institute (FFI) resumed classes this fall at all Eastern Star Church campuses. One of FFI’s favorite topics is Compound Interest. According to Eastern Star Church Stewardship Manager, Keith Wilson, compound interest can be defined as interest calculated on the initial principal and also on the accumulated interest of previous periods. Think of it as earning “interest on interest” which can cause wealth to snowball rapidly. “The more often your money earns interest, the faster and bigger your saving/investment account grows,” says Bro. Wilson. The Compound Interest chart below shows how much you can save over time if you start saving/investing early. A person, who started saving/investing in their early 20s and stopped contributing at the age of 36, had more money at the age of 65 than a person who started investing in their late 30s. To get a better understanding of the importance of savings, Bro. Wilson suggests reading Proverbs 6:6-11 (GNT) and Matthew 25:14-30.
Saving money is a principle ESC wants all members to learn. The concept itself is easy to understand. Most people are not aware of the benefits of saving for their future. When it comes to saving for the future, Bro. Wilson refers to Albert Einstein, who stated: “Compound Interest is considered the Eighth Wonder of the World.” If you start saving early and watch your savings grow to enormous amounts over time, you will not have to worry about saving more when you are in your 60s. The more interest your money earns, the faster and bigger your saving/investment account will grow, explains Bro. Wilson.
“It’s never too late to save. Start now and don’t procrastinate. Spend less than what you earn,” Wilson warns. To get more information about Financial Freedom Institute visit our website and click on the FINANCIAL FREEDOM INSTITUTE tab.

Breast Cancer Awareness Testimony Written by Nicole Ashburn
of the additional cancerous lymph nodes, Sis. Byrd had to have chemotherapy and radiation. She was scheduled for four sessions of chemo and 33 sessions of radiation (five days a week for approximately two months). Sis. Byrd struggled with her treatment plan. After her first chemo treatment, she was tired but ok and did not have any hair loss. After that, each treatment left her with new challenges: headaches, feeling cloudy mentally, swollen tongue, bleeding, a burning sensation, brittle hair, and then finally hair loss. The treatments resulted in a loss of white blood cells that help to protect the immune system. To feel better, Sis. Byrd would soak in a whirlpool tub with the air jets. Her lungs had been infected, and her body could not handle the last chemo treatment. Two months were spent trying to heal her lungs. Her thought was this is God’s will. “I’m not carrying this breast cancer bag with the big pink ribbon on it,” Denise Byrd said to her husband after being told she has Breast Cancer. She thought the doctor had diagnosed the wrong person. Sis. Byrd, a member of Eastern Star Church since 1991 and serves on the Usher Board Ministry, explained how breast cancer affects everything in your life. Breast cancer affects the patient, family, and friends in a variety of ways. The demands placed on the mind, body, and spirit is overwhelming. During this critical time, most people want to help but do not know how. Sis. Byrd’s journey will inspire each of us to understand what “But God” really means. Below she shares her darkest hours, her inspiration, her motivation, her courage, and her faith - her story. On Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at the age of 57 years old, Sis. Byrd received the news that she had what was thought to be Stage II breast cancer. The initial concern presented itself near the end of November 2016 right before her vacation. She had her annual mammogram scheduled for December; however, in November as she was preparing for her trip she felt something abnormal. Upon her return, she went to the doctor and followed their instruction to have a biopsy of the area. When she and her husband returned to the doctor for the results, the doctor told them that the cancer was malignant. When those words were spoken, Sis. Byrd said she no longer heard anything else; however, with her husband by her side, he continued to listen. At the end of the office visit, the doctor gave her the pink bag that she handed to her husband. During the five and a half hour surgery, the physician removed 15 lymph nodes and a two-centimeter tumor from her breast. There were five cancerous lymph nodes instead of the original four that moved her from Stage II to Stage III cancer. Because
6
Finally, her lungs healed, and radiation treatments began. The prep itself was about five and a half hours, but the sessions were approximately ten minutes. How could it get any worse? At the end of radiation, all her skin was burnt and peeling under her arm, her breast was burnt and dark, she was swollen (and still today), she has to use a prosthetic to help with the release of fluids, and she exercises daily to move the fluids throughout her body. Though the treatments were given to aid in her recovery, it confused her body at the same time. Sis. Byrd did not have a history of breast cancer in her family. Her support system was and still is her husband, family, and friends. Her husband stood by her side in all ways possible. Her family and friends are always right there for her. Sis. Byrd had faith in God’s will for her, and this is why she shared her story. Throughout the interview, Sis. Byrd became emotional as she recalled various aspects of her journey. She smiled, teared-up, and was joyful. She spoke of God from beginning to end. Today, Sis. Byrd continues to pray and praise God for her healing. It is God’s will why she is here today; she held onto Him and her faith. Sis. Byrd also read and listened to the Bible during her treatment and has continued that practice. Her hair has grown back and is more beautiful than ever! She is on the committee of the Pink Ribbon Connection and will be a model in their event in October. She has a team named “Here We Go” (God spoke to her here – because when something new or different would come along, she would say “Here I go”) in the Susan G. Komen walk/run. Sis. Byrd said all cancers are different and she wants to encourage all to do a monthly breast self-exam and get a mammogram every year.
Volunteer Spotlight: Nurses Aid Ministry Written by Ellen Powell
Are you new to Eastern Star Church and ready to get involved in ministry but not sure where you fit? If so, ESC has more than 40 ministries in which you can connect. In this issue, the spotlight shines on some exceptional ladies who serve on the Nurses Aid Ministry. You may not know they exist until they show up when you need them most! Everyone has gifts from God, and we are to use those gifts in service to others, but it takes a special person to step in when one is in distress due to a medical reason or illness. To serve in this ministry, one needs to be certified to administer First Aid and CPR. The members are compassionate, dependable and caring individuals, who think and communicate clearly under stress. Knowing what they do may spark an interest, but knowing why others chose this ministry could sway you to serve too!
SISTER JOYCE NICHOLS (MEMBER FOR 25 YEARS): 1) Why did you join the Nurses Aid Ministry? I wanted to participate in a ministry to serve God in an organized setting to help other believers that would make me part of a team. The nurses fit that need for me. 2) What impact has serving in this Ministry had on your spiritual walk? It helped my walk with God by making sacrifices, giving of my time, getting to know other believers, and being passionate for the sake of other people. SISTER CONSTANCE JONES (MEMBER FOR OVER 30 YEARS):
SISTER BERNETTE SMITH (member since 1980’s):
1) Why did you join the Nurses Aid Ministry? My mother was in the Nurses Ministry, and she talked me into joining. I enjoy serving our congregation and our District Nurses Association. 2) What impact has serving in this Ministry had on your spiritual walk? It has impacted my spiritual walk by helping me to learn to love others even though they may be different from me.
God loved us first so we must love one another. Our task is to help those who are overcome with the Holy Spirit; not to quench the spirit but to make sure they are safe. We are also responsible for ensuring Pastor Johnson has water and whatever he needs on the pulpit.
1) Why did you join the Nurses Aid Ministry? I used to watch the nurses and noted how kind and caring they were towards the congregation and the pastor. The pastor at the time was Rev. Robinson, and he said, “God gave everyone a calling,” I started thinking what is my calling? I said to myself I can’t sing, I can’t stand for a long time to be an usher, and didn’t have enough time to work in church every day because of my job. I knew then that nursing was what God called me to do. 2) What impact has serving in this ministry had on your spiritual walk? It has made me a better woman and a child of God. It has helped me to help others in ways I never could have imagined. It has changed me spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Even though our group is small, I think this is what God wanted for me and the other nurses to do. We show others love and demonstrate how we’re supposed to care for one another. If you are still contemplating what ministry to join, visit our website and click on the MINISTRIES tab and take the Spiritual Gifts Assessment. Start there, and choose a ministry that coincides with your gifts. No matter what you choose, do so TODAY! Eastern Star Church needs you!
