Editors Letter Hello Readers, I’m sorry to say that summer has come to an end; but before we cosy up with our blankets and hot beverages, I recommend we take time to enjoy the more colourful season. I once spoke to an artist about painting an autumn evening sky, and he told me that artists don’t use the same colours that they see, because if they did – with all the pinks, purples and oranges – no one would believe it.
However; if you’ve got any pictures of these brilliant autumn colours that you think would make for a vibrant cover, we’d love to see them. We’d love to see them even if you don’t think they’d make good covers! This edition brings you all things arts and crafts. We’ve got societies and clubs for you to join, craft classes for you to attend and local businesses that you can trust to do it for you with great skill and
enthusiasm. You never know, you may discover a skill you never knew you had! If you know of or run a local business, and want to get involved with this community magazine, whether it’s for an advert or editorial then please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re really quite nice people, and the more the merrier! Or even if you know of an event in your town, we’d like to hear about it. We pride ourselves in doing our local businesses proud, and will strive to continue the good work. So until next time! Please do continue to get in touch with any thoughts, comments or ideas for the coming editions. With kindest regards,
Tuija

Folkestone Book Festival - back to inspire once again! Let us excite you with literary gems this autumn!
Lionel Shriver
15 – 24 November 2013 With curator Geraldine D’Amico at the helm once again you are invited to join the Folkestone Book Festival from 15 – 24 November for a journey of discovery. Scale the highest peaks of the world with mountain climber Doug Scott, brave the frontline of the First World War with Kate Adie or sail the seven seas as a Tudor explorer. This year’s festival is packed with adventure, inspiration and new ideas. It is also a festival to make you laugh at middle class foibles and dream of night time adventures with a magical lion. There is something for everyone at this year’s festival regardless of age or taste. Geraldine says, “We hope to throw some light on our history from merchant adventures to suffragettes, castle builders to nuclear physicists, to help understand and offer a forum to discuss the ailing NHs, war on terror and what the future is for today’s young people.” A guaranteed highlight of this year’s calendar is the presentation by Lionel Shriver. A notable author who is known best for her award winning novel We Need to Talk About Kevin, a book that became a silver screen adaptation starring Tilda Swinton. Now she joins the Book Festival to talk about her new book Big Brother, in which the main character is shocked at the dramatic change in her brother’s appearance. Author Lionel Shriver will be discussing and debating a number of the issues and questions that arise in her novel. Why do we overeat? How much sacrifice will we make to P6
save a single member of our family? Is it ever possible to save loved ones from themselves? Essential and unmissable! With so many fabulous offers available there is no excuse not to join in. Early bird tickets, extended concessionary rates and exclusive dining opportunities from Rocksalt, Smokehouse and Blooms make this year’s Book Festival quite possibly the best yet. Whether you are a book worm or not brighten those cold November nights with something new and exciting. Here are 10 reasons why you should come to the Folkestone Book Festival 2013: • All writers are wonderful storytellers and we are bringing you the best from novelists Dorothy Koomson to Lionel Shriver. • Be inspired by mountaineer Doug Scott, artist Cornelia Parker, musician Jim Bob or doctor Kevin Fong. • Have fun at the big book group, laugh at bourgeois peculiarities or spend a great evening at the Friends Quiz.
• Debate burning issues such as religion, war on terror, the future for young people, the NHS and others. • Explore the past with Kate Adie, Antony Beevor and other historians. • Bring the kids, explore different worlds and take part in family workshops. • Learn about local history from the Romans to today. • Shine at our open mic evening! • Take part in the festive Xmas Lights Switch On parade and celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with us. • Do your Christmas shopping and impress your friends with signed copies of great books. Whether you are a reader or not, the festival will entertain, captivate, illuminate and hopefully open new horizons. See you there! www.folkestonebookfest.com

Quite quickly you should produce a moist and very tasty breadcrumb mixture. Press this mixture firmly onto the upper side of the fillets. Roast for approximately 20 minutes, or until the crust is brown. Serve with whatever takes your fancy!

Emily and Me Floristry Workshops started secondary school here and it is to our benefit, and it would be a waste not to take her up on her offer. Based in Lympne, the list of what Samantha can do with flowers is long; from wedding bouquets and buttons holes, to corporate, Christmas, and sympathy arrangements. All of these forms she is willing to share with you at the workshops.
Everyone needs a creative outlet, and for Samantha Reynolds her lifelong passion has been for flowers and floristry; and now she wishes to invite you to join her and experience the craft for yourself.
The next workshop will be on Thursday 3rd October at the Dolls House in Hythe starting at 10:30am to 1:30pm, and will cover things such as hand tied bouquets, table decorations and closer to Christmas door wreaths and many other floral delights. All the tools, flowers, pots etc. will be provided, along with tea, coffee and cake, and all for only £45, although there are discounts available through their Facebook page. Everyone is really friendly and the opportunity so rare, that it could be one of the most interesting ways to pick up a skill you can enjoy for years to come.
Samantha originally trained in Knightsbridge, London, with the celebrity florist and author Judith Blacklock, of which she placed top of her class in their final assignment, and has since worked with Laura Leong, Marco Wamelink (stylist to the V&A, The Dorchester, The Savoy, Claridges and Vanity Fair Magazine), Lynne Dallas (consultant to Purely Roses UK, Australian TV veteran and Chelsea Flower Show exhibitor who has graced many magazines), author Alan Peck and Dawn Jennings (Chelsea Flower Show, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace). Why would you pass up an opportunity to work with someone who has learnt from the best? Now she is returning to Kent after retraining in London, as her daughter has recently P12

The Sewing Space, Hythe I’ve always really wanted to learn how to sew and make my own clothes, something special that no one else can have because I made it for me; and now I can do just that. The Sewing Space, Hythe, offers workshops, lessons and classes in sewing, pattern making, knitting, crochet, felt-making, machine embroidery, quilting, hand embroidery, locker hooking and other crafts. It doesn’t matter at what level you are, everyone is welcome. With a focus on sewing for pleasure, with no pressure or set dates to finish work, there’s just a chance to learn in an encouraging, relaxing environment. The Sewing Space sells beautiful fabrics by Moda, Michael Miller, Free Spirit, Fabric Freedom, Riley Blake, P&B Textiles, Art Gallery, Rowan and more; as well as sewing and quilting notions and equipment, magazines,
books, patterns and handmade items and the full range of Simplicity Patterns. And in October, they are looking to launch a Sewing Circle on Tuesday Mornings from 10 – 1 where people can work on their own projects, just in time for to start on Christmas Crafts and presents. It’s only £5 per week with coffee and tea included. Knitting or Crochet lessons are also available every Thursday morning from 10 – 1, for just £12 for three hours. If you know what you’re doing, but simply don’t have the equipment, you can hire sewing machines by the hour or day. If you don’t have time to make or fix your clothes yourself, they also offer alterations services. You can drop off and collect your items in the shop for meticulous work at very competitive prices. The Sewing Space looks forward to meeting you, and sharing the value of handmade items you can take pride in, and follow their Facebook page and newsletter to keep up to date with their news.

Why Not Fix he will do both home repairs or if people would prefer, anyone can drop things to him from between 7:30am and 9pm so as to work around you, the client. Depending on the product, he promises to repair that day if not within the hour, rather than sending your item off for a couple of weeks to be fixed elsewhere. Besides, these are trusted hands you’re leaving your item with; Andy has studied Electronics and Mechanical engineering and gained experience working for various companies, so you know you’re getting the best service for a lower price. The reason I think he’s worth recommending is his enthusiasm. Whilst speaking to him it wasn’t just that he said he enjoyed what he does, it was clear in his voice. This is a man who won’t stop until your item is fixed because he truly believes there’s life in it yet.
For someone who spends her life on her computer, phone, with hair straighteners close at hand and a million other electrical items in my home, it’s comforting to know there’s a handy man just a phone call away. Andy from Why not fix? had enough of the corporate world and decided to work for himself, something he’s always wanted to do. With his passion for fixing broken things rather than throwing them away, his business has snowballed from hair straighteners to laptops, ipods, ipads and mobiles, domestic appliances and anything else you may have that’s broken. “Things are made to break nowadays, but I begrudge throwing things away. Every appliance is a challenge and I will not be beaten by it”. This fighting talk is just what the doctor ordered in a time when replacing things are not cheap. He’s based in Hawkinge though P22 P22

Big Sleep Out 2013 The Folkestone Churches Winter Shelter is hosted by various local churches with volunteers and staff working together to provide a warm welcome, hot food and comfortable bed for homeless guests in the Shepway area. Behind the scenes, staff provide advocacy for guests and work closely with local agencies to support the individuals short and long term needs of those who access our service.
Would you sleep out for one night this winter so others don’t have to? Folkestone’s first Big Sleep Out in aid of Folkestone Churches Winter Shelter will take place on Saturday 26 October 2013. We are asking local people to ditch the duvet and be sponsored to experience a night sleeping out to raise vital funds to help Folkestone’s vulnerable this winter.
The Big Sleep Out is open to all ages, though those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and is taking place at St Mary’s Church of England Primary Academy, Warren Road, Folkestone CT19 6QH. We hope you decide to join us for a fun night with a serious message.
The target for this event is to raise £4000 to support the Winter Shelter, which will be providing nearly 1100 bed spaces, as well as hot meals, drinks and other much needed assistance from December to February. The work of the Winter Shelter helps some of the most vulnerable people in Folkestone and surrounding areas, giving them a hot meal and a warm bed in addition to support with accessing services that allow them to take some control of their lives.

The Folkestone Winter Shelter is dependendent upon voluntary donations from supporters, and would be very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to donate or get involved in supporting the shelter in another way.

Shoreline Vintage
Is your room missing something? A piece that could tie it all together? Something like a reinvented piece from the 1920’s or maybe a revived French find? This may sound specific, but that’s because Shoreline Vintage specialise in selling refurbished furniture. This relaxed and friendly business blossomed from the interest Lisa had after wanting a change of direction, and snowballing into what it is now. Shoreline Vintage has recently relocated to no. 9 Hythe High Street from a shop in Folkestone, in which they sell refurbished furniture as well as products from a company called Pink Lily who is a textile artist that specialises
in free motion embroidery and has a range of products such as door stops, pictures, soft furnishings and wooden signs. The furniture of Shoreline Vintage is painted with an eco-friendly chalk paint called Autentico which is produced in Kent. It has a high adhesion rate, no chemicals, low VOC which means no plastics in it, sticks to all surfaces from woods to laminates and is just the thing you need to restore some life and love to your furniture. The mother and daughter team also sell the paint in the shop and have a range for outdoors as well; so all of your refurbishment needs can be met. Even if you already own the piece and it just needs a little life put back into it, they can handle that too.

Plant of the Month
Originating in South Africa, these bold and striking plants have become extremely popular in recent years, entering into a modern garden setting with as much ease as they do a traditional mixed border.
AGAPANTHUS
Often known as African Lilies, they are tall and statuesque but despite their high maintenance appearance, actually require little upkeep, and with a little bit of TLC will survive a British Winter outdoors. They are drought tolerant and a good choice for coastal areas, coping well with wind and salty air. Their flowers will peak during July and August and whether or not they are grown in pots or in beds, always make sure they are mulched during winter.
MATTHEWS GARDEN SERVICE Lawn and hedge cutting, turfing, tree felling, fencing, weeding and planting, regular maintenance. Rubbish Clearance. Domestic and Commercial Work Undertaken.

Air Spectacular To Return Next Year
UNDER new management and with considerable financial support already in place, Folkestone Airshow is set to return in 2014. Organised by event management company Open Air Promotions Ltd, the two-day show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8. Flying displays will take place on both days as well as ground events and activities on The Leas and in the harbour area. Military aircraft taking part will be announced next year. Shepway District Council will make The Leas available for the event. This year, Shepway District Council and Folkestone Town Council jointly funded a display by the RAF Red Arrows after the planned Airshow was called off. Open Air Promotions director Yvonne Holder, who was project manager for the cancelled 2013 Airshow and was involved P38
in last year’s successful event, said that preparations were already under way.
Ms Holder said that Fly Folkestone shop and office would open in the Old High Street
“Open Air Promotions directors have wide experience of event management and are grateful that the district council has made The Leas available for the event which will not only attract scores of thousands of visitors and entertain residents but also help hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses traders to boost their income.
later this month and an extensive promotion campaign would start in October.
“Because the show is free - that is, there is no gate money or entrance fee - and the costs of staging it are high it is necessary to raise money from sponsorships, donations and proceeds of pre-event fundraising events and activities. “The more money we can raise the more aircraft we can hire and the longer their displays. Sponsorship opportunities and other revenue-raising schemes will be announced shortly”.
Discover Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh manager Chris Kirkham said that news of the return of the Airshow would be widely welcomed. “It’s an exciting event which has enormous potential to keep Folkestone firmly on the map as a leisure destination. “Alongside the Triennial, War and Peace Revival, many traditional festivals on land and water and with special events to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, the Airshow will make Shepway a mecca for event-watchers in 2014. It will be a great year and the what’s on, where and when calendar is already featuring in our marketing programme”.
