Editors Letter Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook; we hope you’re enjoying the lovely bright crisp days as much as we are! Our congratulations to the village of Elham on being voted ‘Kent Village of the Year 2011’ wonderful news and well deserved; please see inside the handbook for further details. We’ve some great news to share with you; East Kent Handbooks now incorporates The Hythe Handbook, as well as The Folkestone Handbook and The Hawkinge & Elham Valley Handbook, so we’re printing and delivering 27,000 copies every edition. For our advertisers, this is great news, as those wanting to target the local area don’t need to look anywhere else; we’ve got it covered! And as almost everyone you see featured in the handbook book their advert in continually, it’s
proof enough that if you’ve not advertised with us before, it’s a great idea to give it a try! There’s some great things going on in the local area in the lead up to Christmas, and also some fabulous places to go and eat to celebrate the coming festive season, all included within the handbook. Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to comment on our new look for the last edition; we continue to love it, and as the handbooks go from strength to strength, hope you do to. Wishing everyone a very calm, happy and enjoyable lead up to Christmas.

As Good As It Gets What are the key aspects for you when making a large purchase or selling a valuable asset? Price, quality, reliability and a service you can depend upon are probably the first things that come to mind.
may be persuaded to use an agent who believes in making contributions from their profits to good local causes. The Good Estate Agent for example donates up to 10% to local or national charities of their clients’ choice.
If you are considering selling or purchasing a home then the above will need careful consideration. Comparisons of agents who help you with your transaction will be crucial before making your decision.
There are a lot of negative news stories at the moment, many of them centred upon trust and accountability. When you decide who to give your valuable business to, you will want to ensure that the people who work on your behalf will meet or exceed your expectations.
You will need to make sure that you are getting a fair deal and if you are community spirited you
Make a list of the factors most important to you and be ready to ask questions that will
make a positive difference to the outcome of your sales or purchase experience. Don’t take no for an answer, and don’t be afraid to continue asking until you get an answer you fully understand. Only when you are clear about what you can expect give the go ahead. Make sure you know that you will receive clear and prompt communication and that you will never be left hanging on a line, or passed from pillar to post; and that messages you leave will be answered by a return call. The good estate agent will make sure that the service you receive is as good as it gets.

A Healthy Balance In Life? Having a balanced, stress-free, debt-free life is not easy these days, on average working more hours than anyone else in Europe! So how do we get that balance in life? Times are changing, we are texting blogging, twittering, and that’s for pleasure! Where’s the down-time? It isn’t happening folks! But just maybe… just maybe there could be a glimmer of hope… EXERCISE! I know, I know, but I really believe in “Fitness for every body” it’s my no 1 tag line! Yes I know what you’re thinking, I can’t do that! But you can! Everyone can... It just takes some commitment from you to move forward... Generally most people, who I come across during my work, want to lose fat or build muscle, and that’s good, if that’s your fitness\health goal, but let’s step back a page! If you don’t exercise yet, where do you start? Well you could get a personal fitness trainer to help and support you, or how about looking at your food; most people eat too much and don’t exercise, that is why they are fat. People think they can carry on eating like they did in their twenties – well they can’t… Unless you exercise! One of the first things I do with my clients is get them to start writing a food journal, this can really emphasise where you’re going wrong, most people eat far too many

Herbal Medicine, why consult a professional? made specifically for Medical Herbalists.
Recently there have been changes to the law and the type of herbal preparation available ‘over the counter’ has changed. Anyone can still go into a health shop, chemist or supermarket and buy herbal medicine products but there’s little or no information about medicinal actions or dosage. Sometimes the product is not even a whole plant medicine – its chemically
altered; it may not be the whole plant, instead only certain isolated constituents. These ‘standardised extracts’ do not always behave in the same way as the whole plant, and some (myself included) might consider them to be ‘pharmaceuticalised’ herbs. As a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) I trained for 5 years for my first class honours degree. The herbs I can prescribe remains unchanged. I use whole plant medicines obtained from specialist (mostly organic) producers
An hours consultation takes with my patients to establish which herbs are indicated, and eliminate those which may (in the specific patients case) be contraindicated or interact with their conventional prescription drugs. The end result is a safe preparation, consisting of a number of ingredients tailored to that individual, their symptoms and cause of disease. NIMH research department has the resources, skills and knowledge to interpret the published research and keep members informed. The safety record of qualified Medical Herbalists is exemplary. I see many people in my practices with varying health complaints. If you are unsure whether a herbal medicine consultation might benefit you then call for a no obligation chat! I also run regular workshops and present talks to groups. Contact me for further information. Lynda Jones BSc(Hons) MNIMH Medical Herbalist. 01303 242838 jones.lynda@yahoo.co.uk

Design Tips Home Security Burglars are opportunists who target empty homes when you are out of the way. Prevent the trauma of your home being burgled in the busy run-up to Christmas with these few simple tips. Keep all doors and windows closed and securely locked while you’re out. Most burglars enter out of sight from the street, so make side and back doors as well as windows very secure. Speak to a locksmith about the latest security options. Fences and hedges are your first line of defence and should act as an effective barrier while still allowing your home to be visible from the street. Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, cover pathways with gravel. The sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to prevent thieves from continuing. Motion activated lighting and well lit paths and driveways are a must. Outdoor security lighting is cheap to install and low energy light bulbs keep running costs down. Install a burglar alarm. As well as protecting your property, an alarm usually lowers your insurance premiums. By following these simple steps you can protect your home and belongings. But just in case you’re unlucky, do make sure you’re fully insured.

Warm Up For Winter by Katherine Sorrell When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer… There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter - and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room - despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside P14

wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient. The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-
grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-inthe-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss especially on an outside wall - by fitting tin foil (or special radiator
Please mention “The Handbook” when responding to adverts
reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.
Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness • Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. • Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair.
• On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece. • Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. • Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion - it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it.

Sing Your Heart Out for Charity Heart Research UK is calling singers, of all styles and abilities, to give voice to their favourite songs this Christmas, as part of its annual festive fundraiser, ‘Sing for your Heart,’ between 8 and 15 December. Whether you’re tone deaf or a total diva, a soloist or sing as part of group, the event will get people to give their heart and lungs a good workout, whilst raising money for pioneering research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. Singing is not only a great way to destress and have fun, it can also improve

What’s On (Cont...) your physical health and wellbeing. Singing exercises the heart and lungs, oxygenates the blood, gives the abdominal and intercostal muscles a workout, improves posture, and releases muscle tension. It also improves breath control, which can assist asthma sufferers or people who experience panic attacks. Those who support ‘Sing for your Heart’ can sing with friends, family and colleagues, in railway stations, shopping centres or a local social venue. Anyone - from choirs, bands, schools and colleges, companies and societies of all sorts – can take part. There are no hard and fast rules, except to have fun and raise funds for national charity, Heart Research UK. After carrying out research into the benefits of singing, Professor Graham Welch from the University of London says: “When singing, major muscle groups are exercised in the upper body. It is also aerobic in that it is a form of exercise that improves the efficiency of the body’s cardiovascular system, with related benefits to overall health.” Barbara Harpham, National Director of Heart Research UK, says: “Singing is so much fun, it doesn’t matter where you perform, what size group you are or even what songs you sing, as along as everyone remembers to Sing for their Heart at least once this Christmas and help support Heart Research UK.” To request your free Sing for your Heart fundraising pack call Heart Research UK on 0113 234 7474, email fundraising@heartresearch.org.uk or visit www.heartresearch.org.uk to download a pack. You can also follow Heart Research UK on Twitter: http://twitter.com/ heartresearchuk or become a fan of our Facebook page: http://www. facebook.com/pages/Heart-ResearchUK/10733061906 Heart Research UK Heart Research UK is a visionary charity founded in 1967 by Mr David Watson, a working heart surgeon, who realised that patients were dying unnecessarily because of the lack of research into heart disease, especially surgical techniques. Having funded six of the first eight successful UK heart transplants the charity leads the way funding ground breaking, medical research projects into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. There is a strong emphasis on supporting clinical and surgical projects and young researchers on their first steps into research. The charity currently funds over £4.1m of research projects at 32 hospitals and universities across the UK, funding over £860,000 last year alone. In addition, over £1m has been awarded, over the last 10 years, to community-based lifestyle projects that aim to prevent or reduce the risks of heart disease. Learning The English Language During Chet’s childhood there were no schools in her village or surrounding areas mainly due to lack of road access.
Life for Chet Kumari Phuyal began in a little village called Puranogaun Dapcha, located in Kavrepalanchok central district of Nepal.
In 2009 Chet came to join her husband in the UK, in the beginning UK life was difficult for Chet, she explains “the hindrance of not being able to speak the language was the most difficult part of adjusting to life here in the UK, being unfamiliar with the traffic system and signs made getting around impossible without my husband or a friend to guide me.” Everyday tasks like shopping was out of the question for Chet, her lack of understanding of the English language and lack of confidence to venture
out on her own almost made her a recluse. In June last year, Chet enrolled on the UK integration and skills development course with SES Tutors, co-funded by the European funding and passed her City & Guilds Entry Level 1 certificate, which enabled her to gain British Citizenship. Her confidence has soared and she can now go shopping on her own and live a more independent life. Wendy Godden Project Manager says “Since the project started in 2010 we have helped over 300 Nepalese women integrate into British life.”
Integration and Skills Development Programme for Nepalese women Would you like to learn or improve your English and prepare for British Citizenship?

Then come join one of SES Tutors part-time courses in Folkestone, Ashford, Dover, Canterbury and surrounding areas, if you can spare 4 hours per week this could be the course for you.
For more information or to enroll please contact SES Tutors:

Our story?
Christine Steven and Doris Beesley McCarthy & Stone assisted living apartment owner.
“Mum and I have always been very close now we’re literally on each others doorstep. Mum had lived in the same house for 55 years before she made the move to be near me. It was a massive upheaval for her but she was struggling to cope living on her own. Her main concern was finding somewhere that would mean she would probably never have to move again – even if she became unable to look after herself. It was a local postman that told me about an assisted living retirement development just down the road from where I live. She could keep her independence and ownership of a property, call on extra help as and when she needed it. Life couldn’t get any better for Mum and I right now.”

Hedge Your Boundary
by Pippa Greenwood
leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade.
Beech:
A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries.
Yew: Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging.
Prunus laurocerasus:
If you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with well-established root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge.
Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a largeleafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring.
So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m especially fond:
Berberis including B.darwinii:
Hornbeam:
This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few P38
Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants.
Thuja plicata:
Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and is often used when one would like some aspects of a Leyland hedge but wouldn’t want its potential to get out of hand. The foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed. Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils.

Euonymus japonica:
Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure.
A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer.
Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart.
Photinia x fraseri:
Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.
This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade.
