History of Hythe Cricket Week Stuck for a Christmas present for a sports-mad husband, boyfriend or father? Well, how about a lavishlyillustrated, 260+ page, A4 sized hardback history of Hythe Cricket Week from Folkestone-born cricket historian, researcher and author David Boorman? Between its inception in 1894 through to World War II, Hythe Cricket Club welcomed some of the most famous amateur players in the land to its annual Cricket Week in August. The cast list included four England captains (including Hythe’s own APF Chapman) and around 30 other internationals; one of Queen Victoria’s grandsons; two Attorneys-General, one of whom presided over the Abdication Crisis in 1936; one of Britain’s top wartime spymasters; numerous association and rugby football internationals; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes; and one of the fastest bowlers of all time, the legendary CJ Kortright, known throughout the cricket world as “The Demon.”

For far too long, this rich and fascinating tapestry has lain undiscovered. Using a wide variety of sources – some of them not publicly available – David has chronicled the matches in full and brought back to life many of the colourful characters who gave Hythe Cricket Week its unique flavour. Researching the book was a labour of love for David, who explained “as a local sportsman myself, I felt it was high time the heyday of Hythe Cricket Week should be rescued from almost 80 years of neglect and oblivion; recreated; and made

available to the sporting – and general – public of the town.” Produced to the highest specification as a Limited Edition of just 60 copies, this is a unique opportunity to acquire a privately-produced work – the first ever published about cricket in the town. It has received warm reviews in the specialist cricketing press and is not available in High Street bookshops. The cost is £24.99 plus £3.20 postage & package. Folkestone Triennial 2017: double edge Dates Announced Creative Foundation is pleased to announce the dates of Folkestone Triennial 2017, which will return for its fourth edition and will be held over a nine week period from 2 September – 5 November 2017. Curated for the second time by Lewis Biggs, the Triennial in 2017 will take the title double edge. The concept of double edge will further develop the inquiry into ‘sense of place’ that guided Folkestone Triennial exhibition, Lookout, in 2014. double edge refers to the two main axes around which Folkestone’s development as a town has taken place historically and geographically: the seashore and the Pent Stream, an ancient watercourse flowing from the Northern Downs into the sea, the present edge between East and West Folkestone. The title draws on the extensive academic study of ‘edge’ concepts in recent years: borders; thresholds; margins; the periphery; the liminal. double edge resonates with major contemporary cultural, economic and political realities experienced as part of everyday lives in Folkestone and across the globe: migration; border control; wealth inequality; sustainability; a challenging

urban environment; and climate change, to name a few. Internationally recognised artists will be commissioned to make new contemporary artworks exhibited in public spaces around the town. Artists will be invited to engage with Folkestone’s various narratives and material memories drawn from the town’s social, cultural, political and economic history. Some artworks will become permanent additions expanding the town’s permanent collection, Folkestone Artworks, built up since the first edition of the Triennial in 2008. All artworks that make up Folkestone Triennial are commissioned with the ambition of positively affecting the urban ecology of the town as a place to live, work, visit and study. Lewis Biggs said: “The title double edge has two meanings – the first is one of anxiety: the edge of the world, the edge of

the future and the unknown. The secondary meaning is one of balance, released through the artist’s imagination when one tips over the edge and looks back on the known with a renewed perspective. Great art makes change and the ambition of this exhibition is to give artists the opportunity to make excellent new work that plays with ambiguity and the several meanings of edge, stimulating audiences to consider why the world is the way it is, how it might be, and how it is always possible to change it.” Further details, including information about the artists commissioned for Folkestone Triennial, will be announced in March 2017. Follow Folkestone Triennial on Instagram and Twitter @ FstoneTriennial #doubleedge.

From James Bond and the Queen to the Hythe Community Cinema

Film helicopter pilot Will Samuelson thrilled a packed house at the Hythe Community Cinema’s November film night with his account of how he flew the helicopter that filmed ‘James Bond’ and ‘the Queen’ being delivered to the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. Both helicopters flew under Tower Bridge – one of the very few occasions this has been allowed. Many in the media believed this feat had been faked using CGI, but Will showed evidence from an extra camera that it was all done for real. He later showed an amazing clip of the stunt men, dressed as Bond and the Queen, preparing to parachute from their helicopter hovering over the Olympic Stadium. Will also talked about his work with Tom Cruise on Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation. He had to follow Cruise who was clinging on to the outside of a huge airbus, something potentially lethal for all concerned – not least the pilot of a tiny helicopter. It wasn’t just the potential thrills that captivated the audience on the night, but also the fascinating glimpse behind the scenes. Will donated his fee for the talk to Kent Air Ambulance and the audience added a further £111 in donations. After a short break for recovery and refreshment, Will’s talk was followed by the Iranian P12

film Taxi Tehran. To get round a ban on his making films in Iran, renowned director Jafar Panahi bought a taxi and filmed the comings and goings of his passengers – the film he made was then smuggled out of Iran on a memory stick hidden in a cake. None of the actors were credited after the film because of the danger of retribution from the Iranian government. So two intriguing accounts of filming using very different vehicles and the very different, but nevertheless genuine, dangers involved. Hythe Community Cinema meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Tin Tabernacle, Hythe.

Coming events at the Hythe Community Cinema On Tuesday, 6th December 2016, we are showing Whale Rider, a New Zealand film directed by Niki Caro. It is a magical, contemporary story of love, rejection and triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfil a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognise. This winner of the World Cinema award at the Sundance Film Festival is not to be missed! Rating PG, run time 101 minutes On Tuesday, 3rd January 2017 is French director Claude Berri’s Manon des Sources, the much anticipated sequel to the joint most popular film of our 2015 2016 season, Jean de Florette. The drama continues with the daughter seeking vengeance on those who caused her father’s death. If you missed Jean de Florette, see our website for a synopsis: www. hythecommunitycinema.co.uk Rating PG, run time 113 minutes On Tuesday, 7th February 2017, come and see Pride, the hilariously funny, British comedy drama directed by Matthew Warcus. See what happens when lesbian and gay activists take their donations direct to the striking miners in a small Welsh mining village. An ultimately uplifting clash of cultures inspired by an extraordinary true story. Rating 15, run time 119 minutes. The Hythe Community Cinema is in the Tin Tabernacle, Hythe from October to July on the first Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 7pm. Entrance £5 per film or £3 with a Hythe Community Cinema card (all currently sold out) but check our website: www.hythecommunitycinema. co.uk for the number of available tickets on the door.

Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who seems to have developed very waxy, smelly ears? What should I do? It sounds as if your Cavalier may have an ear infection- these are very common in dogs with long and hairy ears. You will probably need to take your dog to the vet as he ought to have his ears checked with an otoscope. He may need medicated drops. After the infection has cleared it might be a good idea to use special dog ear wash in his ears regularly to prevent further problems. After you put cleaner in your dog’s ears it can get messy so stand back!

Q: We have just bought a pet rabbit for our children. Do we need to vaccinate him? If so why? Vets recommend that rabbits are vaccinated against 2 diseases - myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). These are

available in a combined vaccine. Both these diseases are fatal to rabbits and there is not a good treatment for either disease. Both diseases are in the wild rabbit population so it is easy for your rabbit to pick these diseases up if he or she is outside. We often see these diseases in unvaccinated pet rabbits in the summer months. The vaccines are very effective and are available at your vet. This year a new strain of VHD (VHD-2) has come to the UK and it has been the cause of several deaths here in Kent. There is now a new VHD-2 vaccine that vets can import. We would recommend that you vaccinate your rabbit both with the normal myxomatosis/ VHD combination vaccine and the new VHD-2 vaccine. Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Winter is a time of roaring fires, warming stews and for a lot of us, wet windows and damp walls that tend to start in autumn. Part of the issue is that at this time of year we have to start drying washing inside on a line, or using a tumble dryer. We also tend to turn the shower to the next notch of heat – all these things cause moisture, which can lead to condensation and damp. One thing you can do when drying washing inside is to open a window for ventilation – however no one wants to do that when it is cold outside.

So what can we do? Here at Dry Homes Solutions, we can eradicate the condensation and damp by installing a special ventilation system that CREATES NO DRAUGHT – so you can dry your washing indoors without having the windows P16

open. We will even clean the mould FOR FREE! With mould and condensation causing particular issues for young children and the elderly, keep in mind the points below throughout the autumn and winter: • Know the places where damp and mould can appear – examples are: above skirting boards, inside cupboards and behind beds and wardrobes. • Do regular checks for damp, mould and condensation and contact us if you find any • Damp, condensation and mould are caused by insufficient ventilation – our special ventilation system can help • Instruct us to treat the walls of your property to prevent damp and its associated problems before they arrive. If you have problems with mould and condensation, a solution is to commission Dry

Home Solutions to supply and install a Passyfier Dehumidifier Vent. The vent works by combining a through-the-wall warm telescopic sleeve with a slab of mineral wool inside and louvered vent internally and an appropriate external cover. The mineral wool allows the exit of moisture vapour but prevents cold draughts so householders are not tempted to block them up. The vents can be installed in established homes or new builds. There are many different types of vents to match décor, style and type of property. It’s a very cost effective and simple remedy FOR LIFE with NO RUNNING COSTS - our fitters are well trained and will leave your house spotless. Dry Home Solutions Ltd, improving the environment you live in. To book your free no obligation survey/quotation, please call Dry Home Solutions Ltd today on 01304 205653 or 07769 588418

Local Fishing

My name is Trevor Ellse and I would like to welcome you to a new column in the handbook; local news about our fisheries, including sea updates at our local shore marks. I have fished for most of the species that reside in our local waters. I will bring you all the news you need to help plan your next fishing trip in the area. Let’s start with our local mixed fishery Nickolls Leisure. Although it’s mainly fished for carp, the high pressure and winds blowing in from the north has slowed the venue down of late. The bream is making a comeback with fish weighing up to 8lb being caught by carp anglers on boilie. There are half a dozen carp weighing more than 30lb being caught mainly down the long bay and P26

beyond up to the old carpet swim. The carp feed mainly when the air pressure drops with multiple catches of double figure carp can be found. With Winter temperatures now setting in, the fishing can be good up to December. Other news at Nickolls is that the harbour and carpet swim areas will be backfilled over the Winter period to make way for the new housing estate. It will be interesting to see if the fish move out into the main body of water more often. Day tickets are available for Nickolls, but a membership for a year is good value, call Derek on 07970 704584 for more details. The Hythe Canal has produced some nice carp weighing it at over 20lb. There are some big bream shoals if you can find them and club matches on the Prince of Wales stretch

have only produced small winning bags. For tickets and membership for the Canal and Beachborough lakes, contact Cinque Ports Angling Society on 01303 891450. On the sea fishing front we had a very late run of mackerel in October, The bass followed them in and some nice bass up to 9lb were caught from the area near to Hythe Imperial. Since then it has been mostly Whiting, which is a small member of the cod family and lots of them. The expected arrival of the cod hasn’t quite happened yet this year, we need some westerly winds to churn the water up to get the fish moving inshore. If you make a great catch or have a report from your fisheries that you would like to share with our reader’s please contact us here at East Kent Handbooks.

Joining together to remember loved ones through Trees of Love This festive season, people from across east Kent will join together to illuminate memories of their loved ones on beautiful trees with Pilgrims Hospices Trees of Love.

able to spend time with this Christmas. People can make a dedication on a beautiful dove which will be placed on the Trees of Love and illuminated throughout the festive season.

Pilgrims Hospices touches the lives of thousands of local people every year with care and support. By bringing people together for their annual Trees of Love remembrance events, Pilgrims Hospices offers family and friends the chance to come together to celebrate the lives of those they have loved and lost. This year as well as a remembrance service at each of the three hospice sites in Margate, Canterbury and Ashford, Pilgrims will be introducing two services in new venues, in Dover and Cheriton. Sara Scriven, Individual Giving Manager said: “Pilgrims Hospices is a charity embedded in the community of east Kent. We want to offer local people a special and personal way to remember those they have loved and lost who they aren’t

“The hope is that with two new services in Dover and Cheriton, more people will be able to join us to remember their loved one in a tangible way this Christmas, whilst supporting the next family in need of hospice care. “We’d like to invite everyone who has lost someone dear to join us, to be part of this very special remembrance service with carols when the Trees of Love lights will be switched on. You don’t have to have lost someone at the hospice to take part, Trees of Love is a community event for everyone in east Kent to come together at this special time.” “Every donation however small is an important part of Pilgrims overall fundraising for hospice care. A £30 donation could help Pilgrims Hospices to offer

a specially prepared festive dinner to a patient and their loved one spending Christmas day on our inpatient until. A £120 donation could help a Pilgrims Hospices specialist nurse to continue making home visits over the festive season, making sure patients can spend Christmas at home surrounded by friends and family.”

Visit The Fifth Trust

In this series, we look at the work of The Fifth Trust; a charity based near Canterbury, which supports people with learning difficulties. Formed in 1990, the Fifth Trust has grown steadily. Today, their Centre provides facilities on two sites in the Elham Valley for well over 100 students, half of whom live locally in residential homes associated with the Trust. You are invited to visit the trust set within the grounds of The Elham Valley Vineyard, where they have both a tearoom and garden centre, which they would very much like you to visit. Volunteering This edition, we look at the opportunity to get involved with the work of the Fifth Trust. Perhaps you have a few hours a week to spare to help adults with learning disabilities at our facilities in Elham Valley Vineyard and Greenhills in Barham? In their own words, the trust explain: P34

We welcome people from all walks of life, as we provide work opportunities in Horticulture, Pottery, Art and Craft, Core Skills, Woodwork, Music and Catering. Our students love to interact with new people and are proud of their achievements. Occasionally we go out to places of interest, so volunteers to help supervise these visits are needed too. We appreciate all the voluntary assistance we receive. Those who volunteer make a big difference to the way the Centre operates. It may be helping a student in a one-toone way within the class, or enabling trips or outings, which would not go ahead without your help. Volunteers make a big difference to our students. Volunteers may choose to work in just one of the sessions or they may choose to work in several. Some choose to work in a single area because they can offer experience and special skills to a session. Some volunteers work for half a day whilst others work a full day or more than one day a week. Every bit helps, no matter how big or small, as long as you can commit to a regular time and place.

A number of our volunteers have used the Fifth Trust Centre to gain experience prior to embarking on a career in adult nursing, social work, teaching or care. Nearly all have found working with us rewarding and enjoyable. We are always keen to hear from those who wish to volunteer. We can offer a taster day so you will be sure that you will be happy with us. This work is really worthwhile, you’ll be glad you offered! We organise your Volunteer DBS check which is all you will need to start. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information on volunteering please email or call us. The Fifth Trust Centre To learn more about the Centre’s facilities, student placement vacancies, new courses, to commission work from Create or Baked, and for all staff and volunteer opportunities, please contact our General Manager, Nikki Marley. IT’S ALL CHILDS PLAY Full S.T.E.A.M ahead for STEM If you have children of primary and secondary age, then you’ve probably been hearing a lot about STEM. It’s the latest buzz approach to getting children (and, dare I say it, adults) excited about the world of science. What’s really refreshing is the move away from geeky science silos and integration with other core subjects that transform everyday life in the modern world. Standing for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, STEM recognises that science has, and always will have, a vital role to play in shaping our world. An initiative started to pique interest in the sciences as the number of children selecting science options plummeted in the UK and the dearth of girls in particular, was recognised, STEM has recently undergone its own mutation as Arts has been added. The newly extended STEAM recognises the need to engage and retain children’s interest although arguably, well-chosen facts, projects and experiments (be it the ubiquitous bicarbonate of soda volcano or equally enthralling fizzy paint) should certainly pique interest! At the heart of STEM is the notion that science, engineering, technology and maths are infused in the everyday lives that we enjoy, as well as the not so every day events of space missions. Far from being the preserve of a few, science is for everyone; a message beautifully reinforced by the discovery in 2012 of a new molecule – Tetranitratoxycarbon. In case you’re interested, not created in a lab by a white cloaked scientist, but rather the accidental creation of a tenyear-old! Growing up, as I did, with visits to the Royal London Homeopathic hospital a part of my childhood and potions like arsenic (the seemingly counterintuitive solution to back pain) I’m fascinated that a whole new scientific method called ‘toxineering’ has recently been discovered, which is the art or should I say science of turning venoms into toxins. As a mother of a teenage daughter myself, I was thrilled when she chose to take triple science. Who knows where this might lead her, be it finding a cure for cancer, advancing genetics or criminology, or saving the planet from the effects of our actions, one thing is sure, with a solid foundation in science she can help change the world for the better. A love of science can start from a myriad of tiny seeds of thought planted in the home, like gardening, sprouting seeds or baking, all science-rich activities. Cooking is certainly one area where S.T.E.A.M comes to the fore… Science covers the way the ingredients interact with each other to produce an awesome cake or bread. It’s fascinating to watch the effect baking soda, self-raising flour and vinegar have on a cake or how sifting or whisking add air and change the finished product. Then there are opportunities for exploring solids and liquids and change with cream, chocolate and eggs. Technology has transformed how we cook something and whether to steam, fry, boil or microwave? Take the

P36

humble potato and you can explore what and how all these different methods work to give us the perfect jacket or fry. Technology also helps us find the perfect recipe, with the internet so accessible to budding chefs I wonder if people still buying cook books are a dying breed. Engineering the perfect recipe takes practice and skill, and often a fair amount of muscle power too! Art can take many forms, from Culinary Art* to colour mixing, from using different toppings on a pizza to form a smiley face, to the presentation of a meal Maths is essential to creating the perfect dish or bake. First of all, the ingredients need to be correctly weighed and measured, then the sequence needs to be followed in the right order and the right size tin or size spoonful of mixture need to be used. Recipe for enjoyment There is nothing better on a cold winters evening than enjoying together a comforting meal, cooked en-famille. Cooking helps to develop children’s independence, makes them feel useful and responsible, expands their repertoire of culinary competence and helps them experiment with their taste buds. Try family favourites like toad in the hole, scrambled eggs or scotch pancakes or maybe something a little more adventurous like lasagne. The skills and knowledge gained from following a simple recipe does wonders for a child’s selfconfidence, especially when seeing the family enjoying their food at meal time. And for younger children, getting them to help prepare a yummy pudding, like a crumble, where they have to get their fingers into the mix has the added benefit of providing a wealth of sensory fun.
