Editors Letter Hello Everyone, Firstly, we’d like to wish you all a very positive 2016. We hope that it is a good year for you, and that it brings you health and happiness. We’d also like to thank you for your ongoing support for the handbooks. We were chatting in the handbook office this week about the great feedback we’ve received over the years from both our advertisers and the organisers of local events who often tell us about the great response they’ve had from being in the handbook - we’re really looking forward to continuing this during the coming year and beyond. During 2016, we’d love to hear from any of you taking part in community events, whether it be a sponsored sky-dive (or even something not quite so scary!) or an event you are
organizing, so that we can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible. If you run a local business, and don’t currently have an advert included in the handbooks, we’d love to hear from you during the year; we have some great packages available and will get your phone ringing. As ever, as our local community magazine, we’re always delighted to hear of local positive news and events that we can help to spread the word about. Just email or call and let us know the details. With kindest regards, and very best wishes for the coming year,
Tuija

Eventful Year at Battle of Britain Memorial 2015 was a momentous year for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, Capel le Ferne, which celebrated the opening of the new Wing Building by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in March. The visitor and education centre, designed in the shape of a Spitfire wing by Folkestone architectural practice Godden Allen Lawn, was Highly Commended in the Small Commercial Building category of the 2015 LABC Building Excellence Awards. The building was also named Best Small Commercial Building at the Southern Region awards, and picked up two awards at the 2015 Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South East Awards for Planning Excellence. As well as being judged the overall winner, the building won the Excellence in Planning and Design for the Public Realm category. Trustee Andy Simpson commented: “Apart from winning a hat trick of awards for the quality and design of the building, we have been delighted by the numbers
of people who have visited The Wing, which is a fitting addition to the Memorial and tells the story of the Battle in a new and unique way.” The capital cost of the Wing project was met by donations from private foundations and individuals, including the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust. The trust is now welcoming school parties to the Wing and can provide dedicated educational resources to help them study the Battle of Britain. The Wing is also available for hire for corporate and social events. The Memorial is open all year round for those on foot, with a clifftop footpath running right through the site and the pedestrian gate always left unlocked. Pedestrian access is free. Opening times for The Wing and the car park (both of which have modest charges to help cover running costs) can be seen at Battle of Britain Memorial which also has details of how to join the “Friends of the Few”. Early in the new year, TV broadcaster Jan Leeming, a long-time supporter of the Memorial, will present the first in an exciting new series of talks to be held in the new Wing building. On Saturday 20 February the former TV newsreader will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Searching

Seasonal Recipe by Hythe Brasserie
Louisiana Salmon fillet with Mango and Chilli salsa 6-8 servings This is a light dish, low in fat and easy to prepare with the added bonus of being gluten free. The salsa is made in advance and will keep for 2 days in the fridge.
For the Salmon:
For the Salsa:
• 1 x 6 oz (150g) salmon fillet per person
• I mango skinned and diced (about 1cm dice) • I Red Pepper roasted with balsamic vinegar until soft, cooled, skinned and chopped • 2 Red Chillis de-seeded and finely chopped • Teaspoon of chopped coriander (optional) • Salt and Pepper to taste Method:
Method: 3. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees C. 4. Oil or butter a baking tray and place the salmon pieces on it 5. Sprinkle the salmon with salt, lemon juice and Cajun spices (as much as you like, depending how spicy you prefer it).
1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl with 1 teaspoon of sugar and a splash of balsamic vinegar.
6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until flesh feels firm to the touch.
2. Refrigerate for 1 hour to allow flavours to infuse.
7. Place the salmon in the centre of each place and spread the salsa around the outside, serve with some roasted sweet potatoes and fresh green salad.
Tip: We use fresh peppers and roast them but for ease at home you can use ready roasted red peppers from a jar, available in any supermarket.
To serve:
Tip: Salsa works very well with spiced chicken and if you’re vegetarian it’s great with grilled Haloumi cheese.

Hooray for our Handymen!
Have you ever noticed that winter brings lots of jobs to do outside the house?
electric machine to resolve. And having the patio door open for the cable to be plugged in with all your warm and cosy heating disappearing outside, suddenly reminds us of the need for those outdoor plug sockets.
As soon as we go from the season of mellow fruitfulness in autumn into the depths of winter, all the little problems start to appear outside your property: The lovely russet coloured leaves of autumn turn into leathery clumps that stick together in the rain and decide to form an impervious barrier in your gutters to any rain being able to access the down pipes, and you get annoying waterfalls from the gutters, usually right where you stand to open the front door. Or one pesky roof tile decides to slide sideways in the wind, letting rain into your loft. I don’t know about you, but hiring a ladder and clambering up to roof level is not an appealing way to spend anyone’s Saturday morning. Thank goodness for our local Handymen, who can spring to our rescue and seem quite happy to wobble around on ladders in the wind and the rain, retrieving clumps of soggy leaves for us. Remember in summer when you planned to get an electrician to install a couple of useful outside sockets in the garden? Well now is the time that you wish you had got around to it, as all the garden jobs seem to require an P12
The heating system usually lets you down on the coldest days, and with such dark evenings, it reminds us that we also didn’t get around to fitting a burglar alarm in summer either. So HOORAY for our local Handymen, they are our true superheroes and often go un-thanked for their dangerous and vital work for us. Here are some of our local supermen that you can call on this winter, and all of them are featured in the new edition of the East Kent Handbook: Gutter Clearing: 01303 230913 or 07788 124660 General Handyman: 01303 230913 or 07788 124660 Emerald Electric: 01303 248163 Wilco Plumbing and Heating: 01303 826173 Or 07860 452640 Metroline for alarms: 01303 220330

Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: My cat weighs 5.5kg and
my vet has advised me my pet should lose half a kg for the sake of his health. I am feeding him the prescribed amount of royal canin light however he is driving me mad, following me around until he gets fed. He also doesn’t want to go out much in the cold weather! Any advice, Clive?
It sounds like you are doing a good job following your vet’s advice and the food you using is good. However, it can be very difficult to get cats to lose weight, especially if they are not very active. If your cat is not satisfied and is following you around maybe try feeding several smaller meals per day (keeping the total daily intake the same of course). It is also a good idea to get a feeder ball or a puzzle feeder so he has to work for his food. This will keep him occupied for a while, we use a feeder ball for our cats. If he is still not satisfied talk to your vet about using an actual prescription weight loss food- these
have ‘satiety support’ to help your cat feel more full and more satisfied. Good Luck and hope your cat meets his weight target soon!
Q: Is it true dogs can get depressed? If so what can be done to help them? Yes, dogs can get depressed for many reasons. Common reasons include change in family structure such as a new pet, a family member leaving home or a new baby arriving. If you think your dog is depressed the first thing to do is try and think if anything has changed that may have caused the depression and then to try to rectify it. If this does not work you should ask your vet for help and he or she may then recommend contacting a dog psychologist. You should always bear in mind that the changes in your dog’s behaviour may be due to an illness rather than depression and it is important to rule this out. Auto-Biographies All-New Mazda MX-5
The all-new Mazda MX-5 rocks. It really does. And it’s not just me that thinks it - the awesome sports car has already been named Roadster of the Year in Britain. But why does the MX-5 rock? And why is it awesome? Well, quite simply, the car is a brand icon. It is brilliant fun to drive – and that has been the case in all of its incarnations over the last 25 years. Having made its British debut at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the all-new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 has an excellent power to weight ratio, rear-wheel drive, perfect 50:50 weight distribution and more comfort and tech than ever before. The MX-5 is offered with a choice of two petrol engines, and with nine models across five trim levels, the mighty yet minute Mazda looks already set to repeat the Japanese motor manufacturer’s influence within the reasonably priced sports car sector. Maintaining the driver-focused nature that has made the MX-5 the best-selling two-seater sports car of all time, it is obvious the engineering philosophy behind the up-to-the-minute model has allowed Mazda to retain the dexterity, enjoyment and engagement that has always characterised it. The lightest MX-5 since the celebrated original, the fresh car is shorter, lower and wider than the outgoing one, with the smallest overhangs and lowest centre of gravity yet. These dynamic proportions combined with Mazda’s KODO: Soul of Motion design values ensure that the model’s styling reflects its emphasis on driving pleasure in an unmistakably contemporary and energetic way. Featuring Mazda’s award-winning SKYACTIV technology, the MX-5’s ultra-efficient lightweight petrol powered engines deliver new heights of performance and economy. Across the line-up the MX-5 features alloy wheels, LED headlights, a leather steering wheel, as well as a light and sleek fabric hood. SE-L models add LED daytime running lights, climate control air-conditioning, DAB radio, Bluetooth and cruise control, plus Mazda’s connectivity and infotainment system with seven-inch colour touch-screen display and Multimedia Commander. SE-L models with the 2.0-litre 160ps engine are P16
distinguished by 17-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels and piano black door mirrors, and benefit from a strut tower bar and limited slip differential. Step up to Sport trim and both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre cars feature rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, smart keyless entry, Premium Bose Surround-Sound and heated leather seats. With the 1.5-litre engine, Sport trim MX-5’s come with 16-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels and piano black door mirrors. Sport models with the 2.0-litre 160ps engine benefit from a dynamic set-up that includes Sports suspension featuring Bilstein dampers, a limited slip differential and strut tower bar, while visually, they are marked out by their 17-inch Bright alloy wheels and body coloured mirrors. But perhaps the most amazing aspect of the MX-5 is that when the original model was launched in 1990, it cost £14,249 (equal to £31,687 in today’s money), yet quarter of a century later with far more standard equipment, the all-new Mazda MX-5 costs from £18,495. This means, more than ever, the car sets the benchmark as the one of the world’s best and most affordable sports cars. Indeed, it seems with its lightweight design, cool cabin, exquisitely engineered mechanicals and balanced handling the all-new Mazda MX-5 is ready to further boost its place in the hearts of automotive aficionados. What’s On THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS BY HOWARD ASHMAN AT THE TOWER THEATRE Wednesday 27 January – Saturday 30 January 2016 Folkestone and Hythe Operatic and Dramatic Society presents Little Shop of Horrors, a comedy horror rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.
AT FOLKESTONE QUARTERHOUSE Saturday 30 January 2016 By the makers of Shoe Baby, Penguin and Arthur’s Dream Boat, Long Nose Puppets new Flyaway Katie! Flyaway Katie is an inspiring flight of fancy about the power of imagination based on the popular children’s book by Polly Dunbar with music by Tom Gray of Gomez.
The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 black com1431102105368edy film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”.
Katie is all alone and feeling grey. The birds in the picture on her wall look so colourful - if only Katie could be as bright as them, who knows what might happen? The show is bursting with colour, movement and surprises, with puppets of varying scales acting the story. The show is aimed at 2-7 year olds and will be 40mins plus 15 mins ‘meet the puppets’.

The ships were of all shapes and sizes and carrying out a myriad of different tasks and activities when they were lost. Plant of the month Primrose
The first sight of a primrose can never fail to warm the cockles of one’s heart, especially if the winter months have been somewhat dreary. Growing these pretty plants is relatively easy and can be grown from seed, sown outdoors in a cold frame during winter. Once they’ve got their second or third leaves they can be put out into the garden, either at the front of a bed or in a container. They don’t grow overly tall and need planting in lightly shaded areas about 6-12 inches apart. Keep an eye on slugs and snails as these can often affect the plants otherwise enjoy the white, yellow, red and pink colours that will bloom.

Aunty Polly
Dear Aunty Polly “I have a neighbour who I am convinced is trying to lure my husband away from me. She split up from her husband last year, he had a fling with another neighbour across the road. She keeps asking my husband to fix things for her, change light bulbs and more recently wants him to tighten a bolt on her bed! Despite my protests my hapless husband is happy to help her.” Dear TM We can look at this two ways, your husband is just a really nice guy and having started to help this woman feels he has to continue to do so, because let’s face it, how do you tell someone “I can’t come around and help you, because my wife feels threatened by you”. Or, and this is what you fear, that secretly your husband fancies her and is happy to tighten her nuts and bolts. If you don’t feel you can trust your husband then that is something that you must address, because it does take two to tango! Meanwhile, I would give him a list of jobs that need doing around the family home… that help might curb his appetite for DIY. Dear Aunty Polly “My husband for the last 7 years has been doing up an old MG, there are permanently car parts all over our small house and this Christmas we are having to forgo a Christmas tree because the engine is in our sitting
room and there is no more room. The front garden is covered with wheels, tyres and other car parts that he has bought in case he needs them. It’s driving me crazy. I have tried to talk about it with him but he ignores me and tells me to stop my nagging.“ Dear SP Is there perhaps a reason beyond doing up an MG, which requires all this clutter? Ask him why it is so important to him to be surrounded by car parts, did something happen in his childhood, was he deprived or insecure? You are going to have to ask him to compromise, and sort through which parts he is actually going to use. Perhaps a shed in the garden would be an answer? Dear Aunty Polly “My husband and I have a very good life because we have both worked hard and saved our money. My mother and siblings are nice to our faces, but, I have discovered that they text each other about what we have and do. The texts were very hurtful, they even call me Madam Bucket. We have always tried to help them and love them very dearly. I feel so hurt and betrayed, it’s like finding out that they never cared for me at all.” Dear FM What a pity you found out, they say “ignorance is bliss” and how true this is. It is probably jealousy which is virtually impossible to combat. I don’t know how you found out about this, but, having done so, I think you should have a family pow wow and explain how you feel and ask them to stop. Don’t let this knowledge change you, carry on being kind to them and try and rise above their pettiness.

What is CBT? from The Resolve Clinic • anxiety disorders (including panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder) • depression • obsessive compulsive disorder • schizophrenia and psychosis • bipolar disorder • There is also good evidence that CBT is helpful in treating many other conditions, including: • chronic fatigue • behavioural difficulties in children • anxiety disorders in children • chronic pain • physical symptoms without a medical diagnosis • sleep difficulties • anger management CBT, or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, is a talking therapy. It has been proved to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in adults, young people and children. CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this affects the way we act. In turn our actions can affect how we think and feel. The therapist and client work together in changing the client’s behaviours, or their thinking patterns, or both of these.
CBT works There is a great deal of research evidence to show that CBT works effectively in treating depression. This research has been carefully reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE provides independent, evidencebased guidance for the NHS on the most effective ways to treat disease and ill health. CBT is recommended by NICE for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
What can CBT help with? NICE recommends CBT in the treatment of the following conditions:
• Stress • Depression • Smoking • Losing Weight • Have you reached Crisis point? helping people to become as happy and fulfilled as they can" - Steve Bennett

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy CBT can be offered in individual sessions with a therapist or as part of a group. The number of CBT sessions you need depends on the difficulty you need help with. Often this will be between five and 20 weekly sessions lasting between 30 and 60 minutes each. CBT is mainly concerned with how you think and act now, instead of looking at and getting help with difficulties in your past. You and your therapist will discuss your specific difficulties and set goals for you to achieve. CBT is not a quick fix. It involves hard work during and between sessions. Your therapist will not tell you what to do. Instead they will help you decide what difficulties you want to work on in order to help you improve your situation. Your therapist will be able to advise you on how to continue using CBT techniques in your daily life after your treatment ends. Steve, The Resolve Clinic

CBT can be used if you are on medication which has been prescribed by your GP. You can also use CBT on its own. This will depend on the difficulty you want help with
