Folkestone has the F-Factor... do you? Grab your songbook and guitar - the F-Factor is coming to town! Budding musicians no longer need to travel far and wide to showcase their talents as Googies Art Cafe will be hosting a singer-songwriter competition starting this April. Despite the name, the competition is more Fame Academy than X-Factor, and will feature many of the region’s most promising original artists over the course of six bi-monthly heats. The final of the competition will take place at Googies on June 28th with the winners not only having the opportunity to record their own 7” vinyl single but also to go on tour as the very special guests of the Preservation Society record label! The competition is open to all ages and aims to showcase music across the entire spectrum. Performances at Googies will be “unplugged” with no drums although bands may put forward their existing material for entry provided it is original.

The winning artist/band may record their single and do the tour performances with full instrumentation. The six performers at each of the six heats will face a judging panel made up of industry professionals. They will perform three songs each - of which at least one must be their original work - with the panel deciding which three artists face the public vote. The winners will then be chosen by the audience and will go into the grand final. The competition is being organised by new local music promoters Hanging Man Promotions, whose mission is to bring the best in new alternative music to Folkestone, in conjunction with Googies Arts Café and the Preservation Society. Nick Clout from Hanging Man told us: “The inspiration to put on F-Factor came from an intense passion and belief in local music which we know that Googies shares in abundance. With the backing of the Preservation Society we now have an amazing prize worthy of the local talent”.

To enter, email Hanging Man at nick@hangingman.co.uk / mark@hangingman.co.uk or get in touch via their Facebook page www.facebook.com/hangingmanpromotions. For more information or an informal chat, speak to Keith at Googies Art Cafe or visit www.hangingman.co.uk

It’s also important for us that we promote local business and artists in Kent and we have already found a few very talented designers, so watch this space.”

One of Natures Little Helpers

Many people know Chamomile aids relaxation. Chamomile tea is commonplace now on supermarket shelves. Whilst chamomile does indeed have calming, relaxing and gentle sedative properties it is so much more. Chamomile has immune stimulating properties, is anti-inflammatory and anti allergic useful in combination with other herbs for both strengthening the immune system against hayfever. Being a slightly bitter herb it helps calm and regulate digestion. Herbalists may use chamomile in combination with other herbs in eczema. Its often associated with the body getting too hot and chamomile helps cool and calm addressing the cause. Chamomile can also be applied topically to hot, itchy skin conditions.

Because chamomile also helps reduce feelings of nausea it can be useful for pregnant women suffering from morning sickness. As a Medical Herbalist I often get asked about ideas to help young babies sleep – we have to be so careful what we give our young ones! Chamomile is a lovely gentle herb for children. Try making a strong infusion of organic chamomile then adding to the baby’s bath to relax them before bedtime. If breastfeeding then drinking plenty of chamomile tea will ensure it comes through the breast milk and help relax baby too. The added

carminative properties may also help with any digestive upsets in baby too. Once children are old enough to drink things other than milk try introducing weak chamomile tea. If started early then most babies will take to the taste of herbs – a bit different to trying to get a fussy five year old to suddenly try! Speaking of digestive upsets in babies, and fussy five year olds do please consult a qualified Medical Herbalist if you need help, its always worth speaking to an expert if you’re not sure. Spring: The Time Of New Growth And A Seasonal Acupuncture Tune Up Feeling tired and run down physically or emotionally after the winter cold and snow? Still recovering from those niggling ailments such as colds and flu? Acupuncture helps a wide range of physical and emotional conditions from muscle/ back pain to stress and anxiety. But you don’t need to be ill to have acupuncture. A quarterly seasonal tune up using acupuncture can help reduce sickness, boost energy levels and improve overall wellbeing. Why do I need a seasonal tune up now? When seasons change extra demands are placed on the energy of our bodies and we are more prone to illness or feeling down. The ancient system of acupuncture works in tune with nature and eases this time of transition. Spring is a time of new growth and rejuvenation but the change from cold, short days to lighter evenings and more warmth can leave people being vulnerable to illness or lacking emotional strength. Prevention is better than waiting until we become ill or emotionally run down and yet many people take more care of their car than their mind and body! The car may have regular servicing and care, so what about our physical and emotional needs? Having a seasonal acupuncture tune up makes sense in helping to ward off potential illness, or making us stronger to fight any existing conditions. Acupuncture works not only by addressing the symptoms, but

also by improving the energy imbalances that are regarded as the underlying causes. Acupuncturists look at the whole person and may give dietary and lifestyle advice, as well as teaching how to relax and boost health and energy using the ancient art of qi gong. Learn about some of these and other intriguing techniques such as cupping and moxibustion, in my next article. The national Acupuncture Awareness Week (27th February - 4th March) highlighted the growing interest in acupuncture. So find out more and benefit from this safe and natural treatment. Spring into 2012 Let Foreman & Jones help you feel better in yourself. We are now entering our fourth year here on the Hythe High St and we’d like to say a big thank you to all our patients for their ongoing support. We recently asked our patients why they use our services; here are some of the lovely responses we received which may give you some insight into what you could expect when visiting us… “I’m lucky enough to have them in Hythe! Their approach is refreshing and professional. I feel I’m taking positive action in a more holistic way which is a relief from conventional medicine.” P.W, Kent. “I feel I must write and thank you for your wonderful treatment. As an ex-nurse I must admit I was a little sceptical regarding herbal treatments. Your initial consultation with me puts most GP’s to shame! I was suffering from the worst case of bronchitis I have ever experienced. Despite antibiotics prescribed by my GP, after 7 days I was getting worse. After only two days of your treatment

the results were miraculous. I can breathe again! In future my health matters are in your hands and I shall not hesitate to recommend you to all and everyone.” J.Dover, Kent

“Jodie is extremely caring and knowledgeable. When you have a consultation with her you feel that you are the only client she has, and she has all the time for you. Never is your appointment rushed. Always happy to see you. When you come away you feel a lot lighter in body and spirit. Just brilliant!” K.S, Kent.

Poetry Corner by Joe Thomas

(Sandgate Writers)

The Perfect Man Sue says to her ninety-year old Gran. ‘What’s your definition of the perfect man?’ ‘That’s hard to say.’ Gran sighs. ‘Men are so difficult to analyse;

and it’s important to have one as well, who is hygienic and doesn’t smell, and hopefully a man well endowed someone who stands out in a crowd.

but it’s important to have a man who is faithful and will always love you.

But what’s most important of all my sweet, is that these four men must never meet.’

And you want one, who’s well read, who’s thoughtful and good in bed,

Recipe Easter Chocolate Mousse Cake

Serves 8

Ready in 1¼ hours plus 3 - 4 hours chilling Perfect for a special Easter Sunday meal this indulgent dessert has a chocolate sponge base, creamy white chocolate mousse filling and a rich and dark chocolate glaze. It can be prepared the day before or made a couple of weeks in advance and frozen.

Ingredients BASE 3 eggs 70g caster sugar 50g plain flour 2 tbsp cocoa powder MOUSSE 2 x 150g bars good quality white chocolate, broken into pieces 3 tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml double cream 3 large egg whites 2 tsp powdered gelatine GLAZE 85g plain chocolate 20g unsalted butter 4 tbsp double cream Melted white chocolate and small candy coated chocolate eggs, to decorate

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 20 cm round spring-form tin. To make the base, whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water until very thick and pale – the whisk should leave a trail in the mixture when lifted. 2. Sift over the flour and cocoa and fold in gently. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 12-15 minutes until just springy to the touch. Turn out and leave to cool completely. Clean the tin and lightly grease and re-line the base. Place the cold sponge in the base of the tin. 3. To make the mousse, place the white chocolate, milk and vanilla extract in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth then stir in 4 tbsp of the cream. 4. Dissolve the gelatine in 2 tbsp hot water. Cool for a few minutes then stir into the chocolate mixture. Softly whip the rest of the cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold in. Spoon the mousse over the sponge base and chill for 3-4 hours until set. 5. For the chocolate glaze, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, stir until smooth then stir in the cream. Leave until cool and thick enough to spread, stirring occasionally. 6. Remove the mousse cake from the tin and gently spread the chocolate glaze over the top. Drizzle with melted white chocolate and decorate with the chocolate eggs.

27th May 2012

1st Folkestone Coastal 10K Race Director Ray Johnson is delighted to announce a new 10 kilometre running event taking place on Sunday 27th May 2012. This year, 2012, is set to be a great one, not only with the Olympics coming to London, but with our first ever Folkestone Coastal 10k running race! The race will be held on the last Sunday of May each year and will set off at 10am from the former Rotunda Site on the Folkestone seafront (CT20 1PX). The 10 kilometre run will head towards Hythe and then return, all whilst taking in the beautiful coastal scenery that the area has to offer. This is a flat promenade route, traffic free and a great race for those who are relatively new to running, but also for those more experienced looking for a good personal best. The event will be supporting local and international charitable causes, and participants are encouraged to run for their chosen charity.

The entry fee is £12.00 affiliated and £14.00 unaffiliated or after the 22nd May and on the day, will be £16.00. It would be appreciated if the event is promoted via friends, enthusiasts and clubs via the local communities. Ray Johnson, Race Director comments: “This is an exciting new project for Folkestone that will encourage people to come to Shepway, enjoy the facilities with a mainly Seafront run and further assist charitable concerns. The event already has over 30 runners registered and will be limited to 1,000. We are hoping for tremendous support from the crowds, and have already received positive feedback from experienced runners who cannot wait to participate, particularly due to the distance that is within many runners’ reach. The event is already being supportedby various sponsors, including Independent Insurance Services / Insure Green, Metroline Security and Fullicks Electrical in Cheriton. We are also looking for further sponsorship and prizes, so please get in touch.

This is a new community charity event and so all proceeds will go to charitable causes, including Folkestone Ghurkha Community www.gurkhamemorialfund.org.uk and local Rotary Clubs www.rotary.org. Runners are encouraged to raise money for their chosen charity. More details are available on our website www.folkestonecoastal10k.co.uk where application forms may be downloaded.

Already assistance and cooperation has been gratefully received from Folkestone Running Club, Shepway District Council, the local police and other voluntary organisations.

Alternatively, if preferred, it is possible to register and pay online at www.runnersworld.co.uk/events

Email: ray@independentinsuranceservices.co.uk, Telephone: 01303 22 11 88, Mobile: 07968 290 352

I would encourage everyone to pass information on, as this is an excellent opportunity to raise monies for a chosen registered charity and keep fit at the same time”.

Answer: In a ROCK-et!

Kids Party Protocol! What am I doing for my birthday party this year? These are the dreaded words that can send even the most organised of mums into a downward spiral of stress. Parties may have changed over the years but one thing remains the same – your child’s expectation that his or her birthday party is THE most important and fun day of the year and should be celebrated accordingly. Add to that the constant reminders of the amazing parties of his / her friends and the accompanying ‘playground peer pressure’ and it is no wonder that many mums feel strained as the impending birthday looms nearer.

Parties of yesteryear The traditional party of years ago for a child that has just started school, would generally comprise a simple trip to the local play centre, with a birthday cake thrown in for good measure. But as kids have been seduced by the lavish parties featured on popular children’s TV and influenced by the myriad of themed characters that infiltrate their daily lives, so expectations of what is acknowledged as a ‘good’ party have also shifted up a few gears.

• Always seek out an entertainer that has been recommended to you – and ensure they are CRB checked and have the necessary public liability insurance. Don’t be afraid to ask for references either! • A reputable children’s entertainment company will operate with teams of entertainers – so in the event of sickness or an accident, there is always a back up resource to cover all the party bookings • Don’t get sucked into the ‘battle of the party bags’. Parents invest too much time and £££s putting together party bags only for children to forget about them the minute they leave the event. Far better to buy one gift (from the Pound Shop) which matches the theme of the party eg a fairy wand for fairy parties or a princess book for a princess party. If you have a children’s party dilemma and need to talk to an expert, contact Emporium Parties on 01303 647007 or email info@emporium-parties. co.uk. Emporium Parties operates children’s parties in Kent, Sussex, Essex and Surrey.

What’s hot, what’s not? As we all know, children can be quite specific about their likes and dislikes and will generally voice their preferred choice of party theme in no uncertain terms! Just as children’s toys can drift in and out of favour, the theming for birthday parties is equally transient. For the last 2-3 years, younger girls have gravitated towards fairy and princess parties whilst boys regularly requested pirate and super hero based parties - but now Mama Mia and disco based parties dominate for the girls whilst boys regularly request a Ben 10 or Toy Story type celebration. The advent of dance based computer games like the Wii, reality TV shows profiling emerging dance talent and the growing sophistication of ‘wake up and shake up’ exercise routines that mark the start of the school day, has created a generation of dance crazed youngsters, keen to strut their stuff and learn new moves!

Top tips for success If you’ve got a child’s birthday looming, here are some top tips to ensure the party is a runaway success: • Take the stress out of hosting a party by hiring in the services of an experienced children’s party entertainment company – that way both the children and you get to have fun! Keep It In The Family So you have worked hard all your life; paid off your mortgage with taxed income, paid your stamp and any necessary taxes. Retirement is enjoyable, however, maybe there are certain things you have not thought about. Do you have a Will? If you do, will it achieve what you want it to? Does it ring fence your assets from the various problems that life throws at us and remember a Will can only distribute what you have on the day of your death. Is there a chance of sideways disinheritance, should your son/daughter in law survive your child and remarry? Their new spouse or their beneficiaries can claim the assets. Are the marriages of your children solid, or will an inheritance form part of a marital settlement?

of loss of mental capacity through an illness or an accident. If there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place then the courts and social services will take control. It will take a family member months and anything up and over £3000 to become the courts ‘deputy’ to make decisions on your behalf and then only within very strict parameters set by the court. Do you want to leave the financial security of you and your family to a roll of the dice? There are legal ways of protecting your assets, however, you have to be proactive. Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills, Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney. She is also the advisor in the South East for Universal Asset Protection Ltd. Tel: 01303 773178. Are any of your beneficiaries in receipt of State or Local Authority benefits? An inheritance will mean the end of those benefits. Are you or any of your beneficiaries involved in a business, is your house and other assets protected against creditors? Will Inheritance Tax become a problem for your children should they inherit? Probate fees can be expensive and delay monies getting to beneficiaries for months or even years. It is possible to avoid probate. Are you willing to lose everything to pay for care fees? Do you have a Lasting Power of Attorney? Probably the most important document you can have while you are alive. It allows you to appoint people you trust to be an ‘attorney’ to make decisions on your behalf should you not be able to make decisions yourself because P28

Create the Perfect Home Office by Katherine Sorrell Whether you have a dedicated room, a corner of the kitchen, a converted outbuilding or are simply looking to squeeze an office in under the stairs, our expert Katherine Sorrell’s guide will help you create a work space that’s not just efficient and functional, but also inviting and comfortable. plug sockets in the right places (about three inches above the work surface is good, plus some hidden lower down, too) to accommodate them all. Place electrical items together so you don’t end up with long stretches of cable between them, and clip trailing wires to backs of table legs where possible. Alternatively, going wireless eliminates some cables entirely, and gives you greater flexibility about where to site your equipment.

Light fantastic

In this pretty home office, a wall shelf and natural, neutral storage boxes, baskets, bags and trays from The Holding Company (020 8445 2888; theholdingcompany.co.uk) provide a variety of storage for papers and other work essentials.

Size matters Start by considering the size of desk you require. The bigger the better – you will never regret having plenty of space on which to spread out. Do you also need a table and chairs for meetings, or perhaps a sofa or chaise longue on which to recline and read or think? And storage is vital, whether it’s a shelf above the desk, plan chests, filing cabinets, drawers or stacking boxes. Bear in mind that some things will P30

need to be within arm’s reach, while less-used items can be stored on high shelves or deep cupboards, not necessarily in the same room. In awkward rooms, such as lofts, understairs or other small areas, builtin storage will make the most of the space; otherwise you may consider cheaper, free-standing options.

Get technical A good start is to count up your electrical appliances and ensure that you install enough

Good task and general lighting is vital to avoid eye strain when working at home. The more natural light the better – though beware glare from direct sun, and position your desk at right angles to a window if possible. For working on dim days and in the evenings, fit overhead lighting that doesn’t cast any shadows over your working area – track lighting, spots inset into the ceiling and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should ideally be adjustable. Alternatively, consider wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk.

Fabulous furniture Conventional office furnishings are great for efficiency, but tend to look out of place in a home. While ensuring that your desk and chair are comfortable, seek out furnishings that suit your home and your personality. Plenty of chain stores and independent shops sell home office furniture at a range of prices, but you could also consider hunting around junk shops, second-hand office furniture stores and

salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, a trestle resting on a pair of metal filing cabinets, a distressed kitchen unit or a desktop made from blackboard. Add functional accessories that will brighten up your day, such as colourful waste bins or funky pen holders, and some finishing touches, such as plants, pictures and scented candles that will make this a space where you really want to spend time.

Shared spaces If your office space is shared with your dining room, kitchen, bedroom or living room, you will probably want to conceal it as much as possible when it’s not in use. Build a large cupboard in a recess next to a chimneybreast, for example, and behind the doors you

should be able to squeeze in a desk with some shelving above. In a kitchen you might consider removing a unit. That said, think carefully about whether the room’s two purposes will conflict – if you need to work with the children running around, or when a partner wants to sleep, it’s going to be a problem. You might be better off converting the loft, or fitting an office under the stairs, on a large landing or even in the garden shed. Folkestone Rotary Club’s Junior Chef Competition

Eighteen youngsters were kicking up a storm in the kitchens of the Catering Department at K College; they were all taking part in the Folkestone Rotary Junior Chef competition co-sponsored with the local Hotel and Catering Association. This is the 15th year of the competition and the number of competitors, from 6 local schools, was the highest ever.

The contest was in two parts with the senior (16 – 18 year old) group competing, during the afternoon, in a “Ready, Steady Cook” style contest in which they had a surprise package of ingredients and had to use their creative and culinary skills to come up with an individual dish. There was no lack of flair and the eminent judges, Paul Hagger of Paul’s Restaurant, Ben Walton of The Marquis and Ian Piper of K College, had a tricky task to select the winner.

with their ideas in so very little time.”

The eventual Champion Chef was Stephanie Hill of Folkestone Academy who cooked a very tempting garlic-infused roast potatoes, roast pork and crackling in a white wine sauce.

Years 10 – 11 Alfie Curtis, Brockhill School, with BBQ Pan Asian salmon rolled in heather honey and sesame seeds with jasmine rice.

Daniel Sangiuseppe of the Catering Association commented “The creativity was amazing given the youngsters had to come up

In the early evening it was the turn of the juniors, all 11 of whom had to keep their cool in the heat of the busy kitchen, a very testing environment. There were two age groups split along school year group lines. The winner of each age group as: Years 7 – 9 Laura Fairfax, Folkestone Academy, with grilled cutlets of lamb with a minted pea puree and vegetable medley.

David Roseveare of the Folkestone Rotary Club was delighted with the event; “It was the biggest yet and the standard these local youngsters set was very impressive.”

Slugs and Snails by Pippa Greenwood

This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box… indeed just about everywhere. There are many different species; the most common in gardens are probably species of Milax (the keeled slugs) and Arion (e.g. the garden slug and the large black slug), plus the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatus). The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea. It never ceases to amaze me how much damage something as small as a slug can do and in such a short space of time. But then the truth of it is, there is never just one slug or one snail, you can always be sure that there will be hoards of them. I garden on clay and our soil is alkaline and so we have a plentiful supply of snails; if you garden on an acidic soil you will generally find that snails are not a problem as they need the calcium to make their shells. To say that they infuriate me would be an understatement, but the type I hate most are those small grey-black keeled slugs that do such a lot of damage to

crops such as potatoes. I garden without chemicals so there is no question of using pellets, but I have tried pretty well every other trick in the book. When it comes to potatoes I grow largely earlies and early mains and these crops are less susceptible because they are lifted relatively promptly. It also pays dividends if you grow varieties such as Pentland Dell, Wilja, Charlotte, Estima and Pentland Ivory all of which show a good degree of resistance to these slugs. I also use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. True this may prove quite expensive but it works brilliantly against slugs, poses no environmental problems (it is a naturally occurring parasite of British slugs) and is perfect for controlling any slug that spends time underground. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay. Slug and snail traps also work well, whether you buy your own ‘Slug Pubs’ or make them by plunging plastic beakers into the soil close to susceptible plants and then part filling them with beer. I once did a mini trial on Gardeners’ Question Time to see which beers slugs and snails liked best, and Guinness came out tops… with alcohol-free lager proving least popular! I also find that milk (stale works well) is good, and if you add a small quantity of grain or porridge oats to the liquid, the pests come in at an amazing rate. Do make sure that you leave a centimetre or so of the rim of the beaker protruding above the soil level as this will greatly reduce the number of beneficial creatures such as ground beetles

that inadvertently fall in to the traps. Upturned half grapefruit skins or even large cabbage leaves can also be used as traps, but remember to empty or replace these daily or else the slugs and snails will re-enter the garden. If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are coco-shell (the mulching material), pine needles and crushed shells (e.g. oyster shell sold by poultry feed suppliers). But whatever you use do remember to put it in a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary. So before they start to really get a hold, show them who is boss, and take action straight away: • Encourage wildlife such as ground beetles, birds and hedgehogs as these may help to keep numbers down. • Create barriers around particularly susceptible plants. • Buy or make slug traps. • If growing potatoes concentrate on earlies and lift these as soon as possible. • Grow varieties of potato that show some resistance to attack. • Use the biological control as a soil drench to control slugs (not snails) • Attach copper strip around the circumference of pots containing slug susceptible plants. • Go on night-time slug and snail hunts. • In late autumn collect up snails from their hibernating places.

Shrinking Your Household Bills

“Shrinking your bills, and getting a package to suit you” Mr J got himself tied into an 18 month contract with his phone and broadband supplier. He wasn’t happy with the service, but had no way of escape. Until he switched to Utility Warehouse Discount Club. They paid his early termination fee. There was no interruption to his service. He was delighted to be able to talk to a UK based Customer Care Centre, and is not tied into any minimum term contract. Mrs P was “sold to” in the shopping centre, and wasn’t told her phone and broadband package, only provided FREE CALLS evenings and weekends. Most of her calls were made in the daytime, so her bills

were frightening her. Her neighbour recommended Utility Warehouse Discount Club. She now gets “Free phone calls” 24/7, and she has her Gas and Electricity all on the same bill. And her neighbour gets a further discount on her own bill for recommending her. Miss J had her gas, electricity, phone, broadband, and mobile. All with different providers, she was struggling with keeping track of five direct debits each month, and they were all on

different contract terms. She was introduced by her work colleague to a Utility Warehouse Discount Club Distributor. One phone number. One point of contact. One single monthly bill. No minimum term contract. Her early termination fees paid for her. Guaranteed to be the CHEAPEST in the UK, or double the difference back, and a full 10% of her total energy spend refunded to her at the end of the year. And she didn’t have to do a thing, it was all done for her.
