Editors Letter Hello Readers, Welcome to the latest edition of The Hawkinge & Elham Valley Handbook. We’d like to thank local photographer Dan Desborough for the beautiful cover photograph he has provided us with. Dan is a very talented photographer, who undertakes commissions; please do have a look at his work on www. facebook.com/Dan-DesboroughPhotography, or on his website www.dandesborough.co.uk. This edition, we hear about a great range of local festivals and events that are taking place in the local area. From the Mermaid Festival in Folkestone, to the return of the Trawler race, to the raft race on Hythe Canal, and the Airshow, there is so much going on in our local area this summer - we can’t wait!
As you’re out and about (hopefully in the sunshine!) please do take a camera with you and share any local shots you have with us by emailing them to info@eastkenthandbooks.com. We’re always on the lookout for new photographs; not only for the covers of the handbooks, but also to share on our website and social media to remind everyone what an amazing place we live in. We hope you continue to enjoy the handbook. As ever, as our local community magazine, we’re always delighted to hear of local positive news and events that we can help to spread the word about. With kindest regards,
Tuija

News From
Discover Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh ‘Extra special’ festivals season ahead Preperations for the local area’s 2014 festivals, events and entertainment season are well under way - and the forecast is that it will be the best in south east England, attract hundreds of thousands of visitors and contribute millions of pounds to the local economy. Features include topline events as well as traditional carnivals and the return of the acclaimed three-month Triennial exhibition of outdoor art. “No other resort in south east England will be able to match Folkestone for fun, thrills and spectacle this year”, claims Chris Kirkham, manager of the Discover Folkestone, Hythe & Romney Marsh tourism marketing organisation (DFHRM). “From early summer right through to autumn, in the air, on land and by the sea, there’ll be events everyone can enjoy. The calendar is packed with family-fun events and will give a great start to the season. All these plus live shows, concerts, exhibitions, events and activities at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, sporting events and country fairs will make 2014 an extra special year. “There will be solemn occasions, too. Folkestone will host the biggest commemoration of the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War outside London P6
and also events to mark the town’s role in WW2”.
• 19-20, Folkestone Mermaid Festival;
Adds Mr Kirkham: “Events are an important reason why people come to Shepway.
• 20, Hawkinge Summer Spectacular;
What’s more, the spending they generate accounts for a substantial part of the district’s visitor economy, worth more than £200 million a year at the most recent count.”
• 26, New Romney Country Fayre;
Some dates to note: JUNE: • 7, 8 - Folkestone Airshow; • 13-15 - Folkestone MultiCultural Festival; • 21 - Lydd Club Day Carnival; • 21-30 - Hythe Festival.

Seasonal Recipe by Hythe Brasserie
Rhubarb Fumble About 8 servings Fumble is a cross between a fool and a crumble, arranged in layers, making a light summery pudding. For the Fruit layer: 1 lb / 500g rhubarb 1 tablespoon sugar For the Fool layer: ½ pint (250 ml) whipping cream ½ pint (250 ml) cold custard (we make our own but the stuff from cartons is much handier) For the Crumble layer:
of water. Stew gently on a low heat until soft but not to mushy. Allow to cool.
6 oz ( 187 g) plain flour 3 oz (64 g) butter 1 ½ oz (32g) sugar 2 handfuls of pistachio nuts, crushed or blitzed in a food processor
3) Make the fool mix. Whisk together the cream and custard until light and fluffy.
Method:
To assemble:
1) Make the crumble
Using either glass bowls or any other type of glass, spoon in a 2 tablespoons of rhubarb, then either pipe or spoon in the same quantity of fool mix and finally top with a tablespoonful of crumble mix
Pre heat the oven to 200 C. Combine flour and sugar and rub in the butter blended. Spread onto a flat baking tray and bake for 12-14 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Break up the crumble into a bowl and mix in the crushed pistachios. 2) Stew the rhubarb
Tip: Assemble the first 2 stages, keep refrigerated and add the crumble when you’re ready to serve
Chop Rhubarb and place into a heavy bottomed saucepan with the sugar and a tablespoon
Tip: This pud works well with any fruit in season, summer berries or even stewed apple

Pets Corner Bichon Frise If you are looking for a pet dog, which fits in well with family life, then look no further than a bichon frise. A small, sturdy dog with a fluffy coat, these pets love human company and are incredibly affectionate. Given their self-assured, happy temperament they make super family pets particularly as they are easy to train. The American Kennel Club refers to the Bichon Frise as ‘merry’ and ‘cheerful’ and the breed standard calls for a dog that is ‘gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate’. Indeed this breed is considered suitable for most people with allergies since they do not shed hair like other breeds. Saliva or drool isn’t really an issue in this little dog either who interestingly needs only up to 30 minutes of exercise each day. Coupled with their size this makes them ideal companions for those living in both flats, small or large houses. With a lifespan of over 12 years you can be assured of an extroverted companion who will quickly become an integral part of the family.
Tortoises Despite their hardy appearance with their great big shells, a tortoise is actually a delicate little creature, injuring easily without the correct care. That aside, with the correct handling they make an unusual but interesting pet for adults and older children. They’re generally problem-free with the right habitat and diet, with their food being one of the most important factors to keeping them healthy. They have a natural diet of weeds and herbs although there are now some processed foods on the market that would also supplement their diet. They predominantly need high fibre, low protein and low sugar foods. Lettuce, fruit and vegetables are great treats and always lots of water is required as tortoises produce high amounts of urine. Knowing that tortoises can often live to more than 50 years old make sure that you are prepared for such a long-term responsibility. Make sure if you buy a tortoise that it comes with official paperwork as these animals are protected under the Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species.

Spinnaker Tower Abseil Why21st Not Fix June 2014 Portsmouth
Raising money for the children’s charity “CHAMPS”, Centre for Haematology at St Mary’s Paediatric Services in London. Who are we and why are we doing the abseil? My name is Sean Dickenson, father of Jack. Jack, a 15 year old pupil of Pent Valley Technology College in Folkestone was diagnosed with a rare condition called dyskeratosis congenita which has caused his bone marrow not to function properly, making the requirement for him to have a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant.
P24
This transplant took place in November 2013 at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London in the paediatric haematology and bone marrow transplantation unit. Myself and Jack’s stepfather, Ray Goodwin, both from Folkestone will be doing this abseil down the Spinnaker Tower at a height of 105 metres (344feet) to raise money for this children’s ward. All we ask is that you make a donation, however large or small, to this great cause. Most of the children in this ward stay for a duration of several weeks or months, undergoing like my son Jack has, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, their immune system is at it’s lowest, they are in isolation for weeks with limited visitors. The Imperial College
Healthcare Charity Trust have a program to rollout Wi-fi to all areas in hospitals covered by the trust in the next year, which will be funded by them, which will allow the children to keep in touch with family and friends via media such as Skype and Facebook, etc. The funds we raise will go towards laptops, iPads and even gaming consoles for the children to use whilst in for the long duration of their treatment, used in conjunction with the newly installed Wi-fi would be an important contribution to improving their stay at the hospital. So please make a donation, it will bring a smile to these children. Thank you, Sean Dickenson and Ray Goodwin.

Monthly Focus Father’s Day Not wanting to be left out, Father’s Day was created in the early 20th century in the USA to recognize a special day for Dads as well as for Mums who already had Mother’s Day in March. It was founded in Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd who told her pastor that she thought fathers should also have a day in honor of them. She suggested it should be held on her Dads birthday but they didn’t have enough time to prepare their sermons so the pastors deferred it until the third Sunday of June. This celebration is now recognized in many countries around the world, albeit on different dates. This year in the UK it will be on Sunday, June 15th and in Australia it is on Sunday 7th September. Many people will make a special effort to visit their fathers and give them cards and gifts. Popular Father’s Day Gifts: Driving a rally car Game of golf Local pub meal A new pint glass Paintings from your child Home made cards

Stress During Pregnancy and Birth Many people believe that babies and children are too young and pliable to suffer from structural stresses and strains, but in reality they do. Birth itself can be a very stressful time for the baby, both physically and emotionally. If there are difficulties and complications with the birth, this can put immense strain on certain structure within the baby’s body. Left untreated these can cause problems in later life. Stress in pregnancy and during birth, contribute to the general level of tension of the baby, and can keep the baby’s nervous system in a persistently alert state. This can occur with either a difficult, or a very quick birth- the baby may find it difficult to relax fully and may have difficulty sleeping. There is a theory that if the baby is in a persistently alert state, it’s digestion can work too quickly. Milk may exit the stomach before it has had a chance to digest, and the partially digested milk enters the intestine where it may ferment and produce wind leading to colic which can be uncomfortable for the baby. In older children there is now much medical evidence that stress during pregnancy and difficult birth can lead to problems later on. Osteopathic treatment using the cranial approach is gentle, safe and effective for babies and children. Very specific, skilled, light pressure is applied where necessary to assist the natural ability of the body to release stresses and tensions.
Osteopaths will always ensure that patients and their babies/children seek appropriate medical advice and treatment alongside any osteopathic treatment, and will refer patients back to their GP if a problem is not suitable for osteopathic treatment. Take a look at the diary section of our website where you will find details of the latest events and open days we have planned including Saturday 29th March focusing on Mum’s in time for Mothering Sunday; and Saturday 28th June & Saturday 5th July to coincide with the Hythe Festival.
Your child’s reaction to treatment is variable; often the baby or child is very relaxed afterwards and sleeps well. Others have a burst of energy after treatment, usually followed by a good nights sleep. Occasionally children are unsettled after treatment. This is a temporary situation, and usually clears within 24-48 hours. Here at The Centre, we are proud to introduce you to our team of professional and fully qualified therapists who are committed and dedicated to ensuring you receive only the best in healthcare, by providing you with a fully integrated service. Our services include sports therapists, homeopaths, hot stones and reflexologists, beauticians, osteopaths, nutritionists, hypnotherapists and many more… Your local one-stop-shop.

Lasting Power of Attorney Appointing someone to act on your behalf under Lasting Power of Attorney There are many reasons why you would want to give someone the legal power to act on your behalf, the way in which this is achieved is to create a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). So why would you need one? There are two types of LPA, the first gives powers related to your property and affairs and the second specifically for decisions regarding your health and welfare. Quite simply, if you become incapable of managing your affairs through illness, injury or senility your assets are effectively frozen until such a time that the Court determines who should be able to do this on your behalf. The most common conditions this relates to are stroke, coma, delirium, concussion, severe mental
health problems, neurodisability/brain injury, alcohol and drug misuse, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. This could also result in joint assets being frozen until financial institutions satisfy themselves that access is appropriate, critical illness benefits not being available when they are most needed, arrears and debts building up and businesses being financially crippled. An LPA creates authority for someone to act on your behalf if you become unable to take important decisions yourself. If we consider the older population, it is a sad fact that around 800,000 people in the UK already suffer from Dementia and this is expected to rise to 1 million* people by 2021. Others simply reach a point where they would like
Have you made your Will? Been putting it off?
So what happens if you lose capacity and do not have an LPA? Sadly, your relatives are then forced to apply after the event to the Court of Protection, a very costly and long winded process and one which ends with them being appointed as a deputy but under constant supervision and scrutiny.
If you feel able to do this yourself you can obtain the paperwork from the Office of the Public Guardian, complete this, collect the relevant signatures and then go through the registration process.
Powers of Attorney also arranged Evening appointments available Fully insured advice Affiliated to the Society of Will Writers

For this reason alone it makes sense to ensure that an LPA is created, usually with grown up children as attorneys.

Martin Lewis Debt Recovery This is a golden time for those in debt. While that may seem a strange thing to say, the best EVER deals for cutting loan, store or credit card costs are now on the market. So if you’ve existing debts, a little bit of action could save you £100s or £1,000s. The aim is to cut the interest rate you pay, so more of your repayments clear the debt rather than servicing the interest, so you’re debt-free far quicker. 1. Stop borrowing. Borrowing more just makes the problem costlier and longer-lived. You can’t borrow your way out of debt. The tips below are about getting new products, not borrowing more. 2. CREDIT & STORE CARD DEBT: Shift to 31mths 0%. If you’ve debts on cards, do a balance transfer. This is where you ask a new card to pay off debts on other cards, so you owe it instead, hopefully at a cheaper rate. To get a card, you must pass a credit score. Usually the only way to find out is to apply, which marks your file. To get round that, find which card’s most likely to accept you with my free Eligibility Checker at www.mse.me/eligibility Follow the balance transfer golden rules: a) Always repay at least the set monthly minimum, or you lose special rates. b) Always plan to shift the debt again or fully repay before the 0% ends, or these cards’ rates jump to 18.9% and 17.9% representative APR. c) Don’t spend on these P42
cards – it’s usually not at the same cheap rate. 3. LOAN DEBT: Can you cut the cost? This is more difficult, as most old loans charge up to two months’ interest to repay early, which needs factoring in. It’s worth trying if you can get a much lower APR loan (ie, more than a fifth off) and have a while left to repay – especially if your credit score’s improved since getting the loan. 4. OVERDRAFTS/ CATALOGUES: Shift to 0%. If you’ve a costly overdraft or need to put money in a bank account to pay off catalogue debts, there’s a way to use a credit card for this. A few balance transfer cards let newbies ‘money transfer’ cash into your bank account, so you then owe the card instead. You could, of course, find a 0% overdraft. Both First Direct and Nationwide offer this if you switch to them, but the amounts offered are usually limited. 5. Don’t repay all debts equally – attack the highest APR first. Once your debts are as cheap as possible, list them all, including overdrafts, in order of APR. Then focus every penny on clearing the highest APR one as it grows fastest, just paying the minimum on the others. Once that’s clear, move to the next highest. The more you pay off, the better. If you just stick to minimum repayments, you’ll take years or decades to be debt-free (they’re designed so you just clear the interest). The exception to the ‘highest APR first’ rule is loans with penalties for overpaying early.
6. Set up a direct debit to protect your credit score. Forget or make late repayments and you risk losing 0% deals, being fined and suffering a hit on your credit score. So set up a direct debit to cover at least the monthly minimum, then manually pay more on top each month. 7. Got both debts and savings? Stop. £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs £180 a year, while the same amount saved in top paying savings earns just £15 before tax. If you’re thinking “yes, but I like some spare cash”, this is often false security. More at www.mse. me/ClearDebtsWithSavings 8. Free debt crisis help. While my tips above should help cut the cost of debt, for some people that isn’t enough. If you’re struggling to meet your minimum repayments and basic bills, have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year’s salary, or can’t sleep for worry, you’re likely to be in debt crisis. If so, ignore the options above and contact a nonprofit debt advice service that uses a different set of solutions, such as StepChange (stepchange.org), Citizens Advice (citizensadvice.org. uk) or National Debtline (nationaldebtline.co.uk). Don’t worry, they’re there to help, not judge.

A Beginners Guide Runner Beans
It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost. For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well. Push a bean into a small pot of multi purpose compost and keep it moist. Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a row of crossed canes or even netting for them to grow up. They could even be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel—add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much. Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set. Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year! P44
