Editors Letter Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook; and what an exciting time we’re having at the moment! With the Olympics, the Golden Jubilee, and hopefully a nice amount of Summer sunshine, we hope you’ve been enoying yourself! This edition, we are really pleased to bring you a new feature giving details of how to support local talent. This edition, we hear about both Hank Foreman, a musician based in Folkestone, and Simon Wicks, a local author from Hythe. If you are, or know of, other local talents, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We also have details of the latest production at the Tower Theatre, as well as the Jazz Club based there. If you fancy something different to your usual evening out, why not go along to one or the other, or both? And if that doesn’t appeal, there’s always the Adult Roller Disco at Hawkinge Community Centre! We hope you continue to enjoy the handbook. As ever, as our local community magazine, we

What A Cheeky Grin!
It’s National Smile Month 2012 How confident are you about your smile?
Maintaining or creating a lovely healthy smile is something we should take time to consider as our smile is hugely important to our personalities, self-confidence, relationships, success and health.
How’s your health?
Poor oral health poses a risk to serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, strokes, pneumonia, premature babies and other major conditions. With a good oral health routine, you can help prevent these conditions. Did you know that whilst you smile your immune system is boosted and the endorphins released lower stress levels!
Children’s Oral Health
At the DENTAL CARE centre Folkestone we recommend seeing children as young as 6 months old. The younger they start getting used to the surgery environment and meeting our friendly dental team the easier it is as they grow older. Research has shown that people who learn good habits as children are far more likely to carry them into adulthood. Over three in every ten children starting school (31%) have tooth decay and a third of children aged 12 have visible dental decay. Shocking statistics when children up to the age of 18 can access dental visits free of charge under the NHS. For your nearest NHS dentist contact NHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk There are several free websites that have educational games and information for children. Here are two websites to get you started: www.learninggamesforkids.com/health_ games_dental.html www.mouthpower.org/mouthpower.cfm
Dental Phobia is a common problem
Visiting the Dentist is ranked number one (22%) for making people nervous, closely followed by heights (19%).
We have team members you can talk to about your concerns. Folkestone and Hythe have self-referral centres to help you overcome your anxiety, contact details are The Counselling Team Ltd. Tel: 0845 4568972
3 Hot tips Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste. In a recent survey, a quarter of the population admitted to not brushing their teeth for 24 hours. This can be a real smile stopper! People who only brush once a day are a third more likely to develop tooth decay Reduce how often you have foods and drinks containing sugar. It isn’t just the amount of sugar you have it is the frequency it is consumed. The more often you eat and drink the more often your teeth come under attack. Visit the dentist regularly – as often as they recommend Dentists are not just looking for decay in your teeth, they also look for signs of gum disease, soft tissue abnormality (which could be early signs of oral cancer) and general well-being. For more information please visit the following websites: www.dentalhealth.org www.nationalsmilemonth.org www.bda.org/public/ National Smile Month runs from 20th May to the 20th June. We will have information displays and competitions running throughout the practice so pop in and see us at the DENTAL CARE centre, 16 Shorncliffe Road, Folkestone, Kent CT20 2SF. Tackling Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) The herbalists approach.
with stresses and strains and hypertension can be one manifestation of this, including a heart supporting herb like hawthorn or rose is almost always indicated in these cases – traditionally, these herbs were referred to as cordials and were common place a couple of generations back! Attention to diet can also help the body cope with age related hypertension. Keep caffeine and alcohol to an abosolute minimum, same with salt (or try pink Himalayan salt instead), avoid processed foods, eat plenty of wholegrains and be careful with full fat dairy products.
The NHS claim that as many as 30% of the population have a blood pressure reading above what is currently considered normal. This reading reflects the level of pressure blood vessel walls are subjected to; the theory being the higher the level the more demand is put on ones heart and circulatory system. There are some herbs with a common reputation for use in hypertension – the use of hawthorn, valerian and garlic is well documented. As a herbalist, I believe hypertension develops differently in each person; what contributes in one person will not be the same as another and so their prescription of herbs will be different too. Blood vessel health is important so i might use blueberry or yarrow; kidney function is often implicated so I may choose a diuretic - dandelion leaf,
celery seed and/or limeflower. Often my consultation reveals the nervous system and adrenals need attention, using supportive herbs such as oats, borage, valerian, limeflower, and skullcap may contribute to lowering blood pressure here. If tension is an issue antispasmodics like cramp bark is often added for its effects on smooth muscle.
Whatever method you use to control blood pressure, its vitally important to ensure you are regularly monitored by regular trips to your Medical Herbalist, GP, or practice nurse. Those with existing medical conditions or taking pharmaceuticals should always take advice from a Medical Herbalist before taking any herbal medicines. Do contact me for no obligation advice!

Stressed Out “Most of the time I feel stressed and nervous and sometimes I almost feel breathless... as if I cannot breathe properly.” “I get these panic attacks – my heart starts racing, my breathing is shallow and fast and I really just want to get out of there..sometimes I feel quite sick with panic.” “I am sleeping really badly, tossing and turning most of the night and I find it difficult to concentrate on what I am supposed to be doing when at work.” How many of these things do you recognise I wonder? As an NLP Hypnotherapist I can tell you that many new clients come to me citing these, or similar, reasons and what they are describing, in general, is a state of anxiety - or as they would say ‘I am feeling really stressed’. But for some people the anxiety can almost take over their lives making them feel totally out of control and that further feeds into the anxious
state increasing the level of anxiety. It is these clients, dealing with sometimes quite difficult or complex issues, I often find myself working with to help them to find a coping mechanism which gives them back some control over their lives. We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t suffer with a degree of anxiety at some point in our life. And for these everyday issues there are simple measures that we can all take which will help including: stand up straight but relaxed and breath calmly (breath in normally, breath out slowly and fully), help yourself feel more resourceful by remembering a time when you dealt with a similar situation and how you managed to get through it successfully and most importantly replace negative ‘self talk’. Negative self talk is something we can probably all recognise and it is a ‘self fulfilling’ prophesy in some respects… so I will finish on this thought: “If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can’t, you’re right.” Jan Holben NLP Hypnotherapist Folkestone and area

Seasonal Recipe Asparagus Frittata
Serves 4-6 Preperation time 10 minutes Cooking time 20 minutes For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that the asparagus is still the star of the dish.
Ingredients • 275g new potatoes • 450g asparagus • 5 large eggs • 200g buffalo mozzarella • 50g Parmesan, grated • 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley • 2 tbsp olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. 2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time. 3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato. 4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears. 5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned. 6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up. 7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm. 8. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

WILL MARDLE
R E N E WA B L E E N E R G Y We are a small family run business. If you have an oil boiler which needs changing why not fit a ‘Air Source Heat Pump’ instead it will reduce energy cost and CO2 emissions by up-to 50%. You may also be eligable for a £850 grant. You can save more money by fitting a Solar Thermal Evacuated Tubes, which would provide around 60-75 % of your Hot Water needs a year, and you would be given a Grant of £300. With Gas and Oil going up weekly, it would be daft not to consider it! We also can help with any plumbing problems and fit bathroom suites including all the tiling.

Why Making A Will Is Not Enough Having always stressed how important it is to make a Will, we must also recognise that a Will has many limitations. Many people who have made a Will have had simple mirror Wills done, leaving ‘everything to each other and then to the children’. Having simple Wills drafted fails to provide any flexibility for a change of circumstances in the future and can lead to a significant loss of assets. Your estate could be significantly diminished prior to your death without effective planning and lawyers could become the major beneficiary when you are no longer around. For many of us there may come a time when we are unable to manage our finances, claim benefits or pay bills.
If you want to keep your assets safe for your family, it is important to make sure that you have put as much protection in place as possible while you are still able to do so. This will not happen without you being proactive. It is your decision to make. Do you want what you have now to still be in place on the day of your death or are you happy with the thought that perhaps all that will be left is a tiny portion? Jaci Godman Irvine specializes in Wills, Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney. She is also the advisor in the South East for Universal Asset Protection Ltd. Tel: 01303 773178. This may be particularly important if we are in hospital for any length of time, are unable to get out and about, or are becoming confused. Losing the ability to manage our own affairs is not restricted to later life. A bang on the head in an accident, a stroke or other illness could mean that we suddenly lose the ability to make decisions or act for ourselves. Unless you have appointed someone to help you, if you lose the ability to make decisions for yourself a special court called the Court of Protection will appoint someone. If a family member or trusted friend wishes to act in this capacity, they will have to apply to the court and be subject to their scrutiny and decisions. This is a costly & time consuming process. You will have no control over who is appointed to make decisions for you. To a d v e r t is e p l e a s e c a l l : 0 1303 266755 or e-mail: info@eastkenthandbooks.com

Wonderful Windows by Katherine Sorrell “They keep in the warmth and keep out prying eyes, but window treatments are much more than a purely practical addition to a room.” says Katherine Sorrell. are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be fiddly to draw. Curtains can also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top (this looks great hung from a tension wire), from clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks.
A simple roller blind can make a pretty addition to any room. Boho Chic roller blind, from The Fabric Box (0844 8118280; www. thefabricbox.co.uk). Prices from £66.
Curtains – where to start The cheapest and most subtle option for hanging curtains is undoubtedly a plastic or metal track. Double tracks can be used to hang both nets and thicker curtains neatly, while triple tracks allow you to use flat panels, perhaps of different fabrics, which can be pulled back and forwards in different combinations depending on the effect you want or how much light you wish to allow in. The more decorative alternative is a curtain pole – perhaps in see-through acrylic, slender stainless steel or pale-painted wood – and with pretty finials on the ends. On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while
for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening.
Curtains – fabric and style Whether you prefer minimal panels or swathes of fabric, it is best to take into account the architecture and size of the room, and of the windows, before opting for a particular curtain style. Grander curtains tend to suit larger, period rooms, while simple curtains are often best suited to modern properties. The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, usually created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gentle gathers, smart pleats or a variety of other shapes. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab- and tie-tops
Curtains can be made from practically any fabric, depending on your budget. The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will tend to look floppy unless supported by a lining. Lining is, in fact, always a good idea, as it will not only help the fabric hang neatly, but also protect it from fading, dirt and condensation. Thermal linings help retain heat, and can be as effective as double glazing, while blackout lining also blocks out light and some noise.
Blinds Once considered something of a poor cousin to curtains, blinds are increasingly fashionable, offering a clean-lined look that is sophisticated and laid-back yet still pleasingly tactile. What’s more, they tend to be far cheaper, as they require much less fabric – just the size of the window opening, plus hems. There are different options to suit different styles of room, many of them easy to make yourself or inexpensive to buy off-the-shelf. A roller blind in a neutral colour will blend into the background in a modern, minimal space, or could be used in conjunction with ‘dress’ curtains (fixed either side of the window) in a more

formal room. Roman blinds pull up in lovely soft folds that give an attractive drape without going over the top, while fabric roll-up blinds which, literally, roll up from the bottom and tie in position, show off their reverse, thus offering an attractive combination of two fabrics. When choosing fabrics, mid-weight, not-too-textured fabrics tend to be best for blinds, which need to roll or fold easily against themselves.
Shutters They may not be the obvious choice, and they are almost always more expensive than blinds or simple curtains, but shutters are good-looking in an unfussy kind of way and suit both old and new properties. They’re also great for privacy, for blocking out sound and light and adding an extra layer
of security. Depending on the configuration of your window, shutters can be made as a single pair, bi-fold, tri-fold or whatever will fit, either fulllength, half-height (café style), or tier-on-tier, rectangular, tapering or arched in shape, and either set within the reveal or folding back against the wall. The plainest, period-type shutters have a timber frame and a solid centre panel – they can be painted any colour and complement a Georgian or Victorian home extremely well. American shutters have louvres that tilt up and down, offering privacy but also letting in light. Alternatively, for a highly contemporary effect, it’s possible to have shutters made from sleek aluminium or funky acrylic, which comes in a range of gorgeous colours.
The secret of this Ninni Rund pair of ready made curtains from Ikea (0845 358 3363; ikea.co.uk), £49.99, is that they have both hidden tabs and a gathering tape at the top.

Keep working out by Andy King What is this country coming to, when in some schools there is less than 2 hours of physical activity per week, I say its damm disgraceful!
Now days we watch and play too many TV
I know I am stating the obvious but school
scouts, sea cadets, army cadets, RAF cadets
is where we learn: to read, write and add, to understand, communicate, interact, social skills, we want out children to become (excuse the pun!) well rounded individuals. Look at
games, all these encourage our young people to be couch potatoes and on top of this the high fat “ready in seconds” convenience foods, is a tragedy waiting to happen........ There are plenty of things to interest young people: clubs, karate, boxing, athletics, cubs, I could go on, we need to turn off the TV stop the videos and get out there and be active. Schools need to employ fitness experts
the world around us; it’s full of advertising
rather than having just P.E. teachers, there’s a
for unhealthy fatty food, there is advertising
wealth of knowledge out there so why don’t
showing you how you should look, and what
the education authorities work on this?
we are doing about it! well, what we are not
On a positive note the Health Education
doing is giving our children enough health and fitness education in our schools, if we do not teach about healthy foods/healthy living, fitness, that includes stress management ( yes even for young people!) why do we wonder when fifty per cent of the population is overweight or obese! Is this what we want for our children? Well that the way it’s going folks, I believe it’s
Authority has been working at doing something: in 1997 experts in health and fitness met in England to review the evidence of activity levels of young people, the primary recommendation is that all young people should participate in physical activity of at least moderate intensity for one hour each day.
going to get worse just look at the latest “fat
Parents please really re-think your attitudes
club” programme on TV! I have been to America
towards fitness and healthy living, as this
on several occasions and I can tell you its far
will rub off on our young people… and
worse over there and it’s on our way over here!!
hopefully I may not be sitting here in ten
So what changes can we make, where do we go? Parents have to encourage and participate in physical activity themselves, otherwise we are going to see more and more young people overweight, if us adults are not getting fit and healthy how do we expect our children to? We need to lead by example, there are now lots of gyms and fitness centres that cater for younger people why not take them along to your gym and get them involved in a fitness program specifically for young people.

Lawns by Pippa Greenwood by soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn.
A lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is constantly being removed by mowing so it needs to be replaced. Phosphorus, potassium and iron also help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined
If you’re happy using chemicals on a weed problem, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps left by the dead weeds. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait two weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand. A proprietary moss killer should take care of moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that they have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect of all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed (and over-seed if necessary) it will soon green up. Regular mowing is essential. A lawn left for too long will soon lose its good appearance and when finally cut, you may wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are
removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green - try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. When the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of cut will be noticeably greater. However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a show lawn that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch but remember that during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week! What about mowers? The one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job it can do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder mower is best. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit uneven, then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should be raked up immediately. However, if you produce only tiny clippings then during dry weather you can leave them on the lawn to help conserve soil moisture.
