Dear Neighbours,
Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook; we hope you are enjoying the lovely bright crisp days as much as we are! I'm very pleased to introduce myself as working alongside Jo for this and future editions of The Hythe Handbook. I look forward to meeting and speaking with many of our advertisers and readers over the coming months, but if you have any comments, thoughts or feedback, please do always feel free to get in touch; we love hearing from you! Thank you to Hillary Scoble of Church Mouse Studios in Hythe for the fantastic front cover this edition, and please do turn to page 6 for more details about Church Mouse Studios - a great place to start your Christmas shopping for sure!

The Good News Advertisement Feature What are the key aspects for you when making a large purchase or selling a valuable asset? Price, quality, reliability and a service you can depend upon are probably the first things that come to mind.
may be persuaded to use an agent who believes in making contributions from their profits to good local causes. The Good Estate Agent for example donates up to 10% to local or national charities of their clients’ choice.
If you are considering selling or purchasing a home then the above will need careful consideration. Comparisons of agents who help you with your transaction will be crucial before making your decision.
There are a lot of negative news stories at the moment, many of them centred upon trust and accountability. When you decide who to give your valuable business to, you will want to ensure that the people who work on your behalf will meet or exceed your expectations.
You will need to make sure that you are getting a fair deal and if you are community spirited you
Make a list of the factors most important to you and be ready to ask questions that will
make a positive difference to the outcome of your sales or purchase experience. Don’t take no for an answer, and don’t be afraid to continue asking until you get an answer you fully understand. Only when you are clear about what you can expect give the go ahead. Make sure you know that you will receive clear and prompt communication and that you will never be left hanging on a line, or passed from pillar to post; and that messages you leave will be answered by a return call. No room in the inn? At a school Nativity play the pillow-stuffed Mary and woolly-bearded Joseph had reached Bethlehem, and at the first inn they banged on the door, asking for a room. Turning away in anticipation of the script, the pregnant Mary was surprised when the 5-year-old innkeeper smiled broadly and yelled “Of course you can stay, we’ve got loads of room!” To the parents’ amusement, and the teacher’s embarrassment, he thought Mary and Joseph deserved a break, and decided against telling them that "There was no room for them in the inn”. I like the story for two reasons: Firstly, it reminds me to say that ‘there is room at the inn’ this coming Christmas Day for a meal in great company at The Salvation Army, Hythe, for the elderly or many who would otherwise be on their own.
This service is only made possible through the help of volunteers and very kind and generous donations made from friends and businesses within our community, but it really does make a difference in people’s lives. Please make contact with me as soon as possible if you, or someone you know, would like to book a place.
If you would like to talk about the meaning of Christmas, and the Christian faith, to find details of our carol services or know more about the Christmas Day Meal, please get in touch either using the contact details below, or coming along any Sunday at 10am to The Salvation Army hall in Portland Road, Hythe. All are welcome; the believing, the doubtful, and the unbelieving, to come and join others who are on the same journey of faith at The Salvation Army.
But the 5-year-old’s decision to ‘make room’ in that play also reminds us of a further choice we have this Christmas. For many people this Christmas may be the perfect opportunity to open the door of our curiosity, to admit that ‘there is room’ in our lives for God, and to take a first step in considering who Jesus is and why His birth is still so relevant.

Church Mouse Studio Church Mouse Studio has been part of Hythe High Street for eleven years. During this time the business has grown and changed to what we have today - a gallery which still holds true to the original idea to promote local artists, but which now includes a large variety of photographs, prints, etchings and woodcuts.
A key part of the business is the custom framing service, which has expanded greatly over the last six years. The service covers everything from the smallest item to the most complex and unusual objects, including last year a very large jigsaw and the titles for a lord, including all the seals! We are always available for professional advice on your own framing needs, whatever they may be. The gallery continues to provide an outlet and exhibition space for local artists at very competitive rates, and we are very keen to help new artists begin their careers. The rest of the gallery provides a large range of
6
gifts all based on design concepts. This still includes our children's area with illustrations, traditional toys and games, and unusual new toys. Among our range of gifts you are sure to find something special or unusual to suit your needs. We pride ourselves on our range of cards, and we try to provide something new each year to extend the range. We concentrate on highly illustrated cards and have a range from the Royal Academy and the V and A as well as producing our own cards. Designs can be commissioned from us especially for Christmas.

Learning The English Language
Life for Chet Kumari Phuyal began in a little village called Puranogaun Dapcha, located in Kavrepalanchok central district of Nepal. During Chet’s childhood there were no schools in her village
or surrounding areas mainly due to lack of road access.
out on her own almost made her a recluse.
In 2009 Chet came to join her husband in the UK, in the beginning UK life was difficult for Chet, she explains:
In June last year, Chet enrolled on the UK integration and skills development course with SES Tutors, co-funded by the European funding and passed her City & Guilds Entry Level 1 certificate, which enabled her to gain British Citizenship.
“the hindrance of not being able to speak the language was the most difficult part of adjusting to life here in the UK, being unfamiliar with the traffic system and signs made getting around impossible without my husband or a friend to guide me.” Everyday tasks like shopping was out of the question for Chet, her lack of understanding of the English language and lack of confidence to venture
Her confidence has soared and she can now go shopping on her own and live a more independent life. Wendy Godden Project Manager says “Since the project started in 2010 we have helped over 300 Nepalese women integrate into British life.”
Integration and Skills Development Programme for Nepalese women Would you like to learn or improve your English and prepare for British Citizenship?
Our classes take place during the week, weekends and evenings, our course is fitted around when you are available.
Then come join one of SES Tutors part-time courses in Folkestone, Ashford, Dover, Canterbury and surrounding areas, if you can spare 4 hours per week this could be the course for you.
For more information or to enroll please contact SES Tutors:
From our course you will: Gain an English ESOL qualification, understand British life and customs, learn essential computer skills, receive career advice and much more.

The Wonders of The Liver And How Herbal Medicine Can Treat It The Liver is an amazing organ and it has many, many functions. As herbalists we regard the Liver function as very important. An imbalance can affect so many areas of a persons’ health and so it’s very important that it’s functioning properly. Here are all the jobs that your Liver does… perhaps it might make you consider not drinking quite so much alcohol next time you’re out as a binge drinking session can affect so many functions in the body.
• manufacturing, breaking down and regulating numerous hormones including the reproductive hormones
The Orthodox View of the Liver and it’s function
• making enzymes and proteins which are responsible for most of the chemical reactions in the body, for example those involved in blood clotting and repair of damaged tissues.
• processing digested food from the intestine
The ‘Energetic’ View of the Liver
• controlling levels of fats, amino acids and glucose in the blood
The Chinese medicine view is that the Liver is closely connected with the blood. It also softens the Qi (flow of energy) in the body. It’s very common when patients have a liver which is out of balance for them to be, what I would call, ‘spikey’ i.e. a bit irritable and difficult.
• combating infections in the body • clearing the blood of particles and infections including bacteria • neutralising and destroying drugs and toxins
• storing iron, vitamins and other essential chemicals
The liver stores the blood and the ‘liver blood’ is related to the repetitive cycles of human life. If there are disharmonies in the Liver then often this can result in disruption to the menstrual cycle – i.e. heavy, painful and irregular periods.
• breaking down food and turning it into energy
The Liver is thought to ‘curtail extremes’ and so if the liver is
• manufacturing bile, which in turn helps you to digest fat
in balance, this often results in a relaxed and easy going disposition. Symptoms related to the liver being out of balance include pain & distension in the flanks, swollen or painful breasts & genitals, gas distension and lower abdominal pain. Symptoms related to the psyche include a sense of frustration, being hampered and feeling on edge. Many disorders of the eyes are seen to be liver related. The liver also has relationship with the tendons and muscles and the nails. There are many herbs that can help support the liver function, regenerate liver cells and improve the flow of energy through the liver. Herbal Medicine can be affective in lowering high blood liver enzyme levels, treating hepatitis, cirrhosis and ‘fatty liver’, liver congestion can also be helped. Liver congestion is often related to symptoms of poor appetite, nausea, furred tongue, headache, diarrhoea and discomfort in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen.

Flu Jabs by Margaretha Kirkham Have you ever seen anything like it? They came in droves! I had no idea there were so many people in Hythe in the same age range as me and my hubby. It was flu-jab time and the organisation at our surgery was amazing. You got in through the front door, straight into a long queue where your invitation to attend was checked. Then it was either straight on or up the stairs where you got in line and invited to bare your left shoulder. Within minutes a cheerful doctor shoved a syringe in your arm and that was that! Everything was kept in perfect order by friendly young people in red vests. Once back home again to the peace and quiet you wondered if it had ever happened!

A Healthy Balance in Life Having a balanced, stress-free, debt-free life is not easy these days, on average working more hours than anyone else in Europe! So how do we get that balance in life? Times are changing, we are texting blogging, twittering, and that’s for pleasure! Where’s the down-time? It isn’t happening folks! But just maybe… just maybe there could be a glimmer of hope… EXERCISE! I know, I know, but I really believe in “Fitness for every body” it’s my no 1 tag line! Yes I know what you’re thinking, I can’t do that! But you can! Everyone can... It just takes some commitment from you to move forward... Generally most people, who I come across during my work, want to lose fat or build muscle, and that’s good, if that’s your fitness\health goal, but let’s step back a page! If you don’t exercise yet, where do you start? Well you could get a personal fitness trainer to help and support you, or how about looking at your food; most people eat too much and don’t exercise, that is why they are fat. People think they can carry on eating like they did in their twenties – well they can’t… Unless you exercise! One of the first things I do with my clients is get them to start writing a food journal, this can really emphasise where

you’re going wrong, most people eat far too many carbohydrates; cakes, biscuits, sweets, pasta, rice, potatoes, if you reduce your intake of these and start walking every day for 15 minutes, I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw some fat loss results, and that’s just the start! Why not join the health and fitness train…? You never know you might enjoy the ride! My aim is to enable some of those young carers who are desperate for time out from their everyday duties and constraints to sail on the famous Thames Sailing Barge The “Cambria” which has been restored in Faversham at a cost of over £1.4 million and which will be used for recreational and educational purposes for young children. The “Cambria” is a wooden Thames Sailing Barge, built at Greenhithe in 1906. She is famed as the last British registered vessel to carry a commercial cargo under sail alone (until 1970) and as such forms a unique part of our industrial and maritime heritage.
As a retired Master Mariner, and Foster Carer, I feel that it is only fitting to unite my two passions to help those children who are so deserving. During this Rotary year, we will be supporting other good causes like the Shelter Box appeal, Mary’s Meal, feeding and clothing under privileged children in the Mossel Bay area in South-Africa, The local Scouts Group, The Red Cross, Aged UK, The youth of Hythe, and many more organisations who require help and support. These will be achieved through fundraising events like “Round the Houses Race” and the Christmas High Street Collection to name but a few.
Our RI president this year has as his theme “Reach within to embrace Society” I find this very fitting as this club has always relied on the mental strength, dedication and reliability of its members to help others less fortunate who are in need of help and encouragement. To this end, apart from fundraising by other committees within the Club for various good causes, I have chosen as the President’s Charity to support “Young Carers”. These are children and Young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse. They often take on practical or emotional caring responsibilities that

Santa's Fun Run 2011 Starting at 11.30am in Folkestone's Bouverie Place Shopping Centre, on Sunday 4th December, why not take part in this years spectacularly colourful Santa's Fun Run? and to keep afterwards, oh, and we ask you to try to raise a little sponsorship money as that is what produces the donations for charities that are the backbone of this event. It is wonderful fun; all the runners and walkers always finish to applause, with big smiles on their faces. Please join us. Attracting hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators on the day, it is organised by Folkestone Channel Rotary Club, and this year will be raising funds for the British Alzheimer's Society and numerous local charities. Now in it's 9th year, the event has raised tens of thousands of pounds for Children with Leukaemia, Pilgrim's Hospice, Cystic Fibrosis research, Kent Air Ambulance, and many others in past years.
Worried you're not fit enough? The run/jog/walk covers all abilities. There are serious santa runners at the front, competing with the santa Gurkhas who always enter a good team. However, the majority jog or walk the course, in seasonal fancy dress, with santa toddlers in santa push chairsleighs, or with santa dogs on leads, and there is a mini route for the under twelves. It is Sunday shopping before Christmas, so there will be lots of spectators and a genuine party atmosphere, with a Gurkha bagpiper to lead off the event. The cost is ÂŁ10 for adults and ÂŁ7 for under twelves and for that you will receive a free santa suit to wear on the day,

Puzzles Solution on page 47
Suduko How to Play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That's all there is to it! You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic – there's no maths involved and no adding up. It's fun. It's challenging, it's addictive.
Calcudoku No number can be repeated in any row or column. The numbers in the heavily outlined set of squares (cages) must combine in any order to produce the target number in the top corner, using only the mathematical operator specified: +, -, x or /. Numbers can be repeated within a cage, but not in the same row or column.
