Editors Letter Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Hythe Handbook; we’ve got a lot to tell you about in this Autumn edition!

We’ve launched our new website; www.eastkenthandbooks.com and would love to hear your feedback – do please have a look. You can submit details of any local events you’re involved in, read the latest news, and book adverts all via the site.

We bring you news of a really exciting development for Hythe town centre; the opening of The Dolls House – a food and art hall in the centre of the high street. With food stalls on the ground floor, and local arts and crafts on the top and lower ground floors, as well as exhibition space and a café, we think it’s a really exciting development for the town, and are looking forward to the opening in October.

We hope you continue to enjoy the handbook. As ever, as our local community magazine, we are always delighted to hear of local positive news and events that we can help you to spread the word about.

We also hear the latest plans for The Folkestone Airshow 2013, and from Peter Green, a local man aiming to raise £1 million for charity. And we continue our feature on supporting local talent, where we hear from Herbert Cottage Industries, a talented pair from Seabrook.

With kindest regards,

Please do continue to get in touch with any thoughts, comments or ideas for the coming editions.

Chocks away for sky-high show PREPARATIONS for next year’s Folkestone Air Show - with plans to make it even more successful than the 2012 event - are already under way, organiser Folkestone Town Centre Management Ltd (FTCM) has announced.

As this year, the show will be funded by local sponsors, donations and the proceeds of sales of memorabilia, and, in a bid to keep most of the spend of the scores of thousands of spectators in Shepway, FTCM is engaging retailers, accommodation and hospitality-providers, entertainment venues and other businesses in its plans.

Branded as Folkestone Airshow, it will take place on Saturday, June 8, the middle day of an actionpacked weekend which will also include ground displays, exhibitions, entertainment, family fun and children’s activities.

Said Ms Holder: “We aim to make the air show weekend even more successful than the one staged in June, the first since 2003. The flying programme will not be announced until nearer the date, but with thrilling displays in the air and plenty of events on the ground to entertain visitors and residents Folkestone AirShow will give a flying start to the month-long Folkestone Festival, also organised by FTCM, which follows”.

With town centre manager John Barber in overall charge of arrangements, FTCM has appointed a dedicated project team to plan and promote the event. Project manager responsible for day-to-day planning and marketing is Yvonne Holder, previously co-ordinator of Shepway District Council’s Inspiring Communities and East Folkestone Together programmes. Matt Davidson provides social media and other support.

“Lessons have been learned from the 2012 event, and our plans include dealing with the important issues of on-the-day parking and communications with spectators. Support from Shepway District Council, the business

community and tourism organisations is fantastic. “A big promotion programme to stimulate and sustain local, regional and farther-afield interest starts this month. It will include print, online, radio, TV, film, website and social media. A separate campaign will target tour and coach operators and group organisers. No one will be able to say that they don’t know about next year’s show. We’re looking to attract bumper crowds throughout the weekend”. Folkestone Airshow 2013 will be officially launched in January by Visit Kent chairman Amanda Cottrell OBE at a ceremony at The Grand.

Herbal Medicine and PreMenstrual Syndrome I remember at school having a lady visit and give us a talk on ‘periods’ and during that talk she spoke about PMS and how it affected girls/women. I remember thinking, even then, that having periods seemed like a nightmare! We were led to believe that pre-menstrual symptoms are normal and that you should expect to have them. It wasn’t until I started training in Herbal Medicine at University that I realised that this just simply wasn’t the case. You don’t have to live with PMS We treat lots of women with hormonally related complaints, we are aware that many women just ‘live’ with PMS believing that there is nothing out there that can help. Many of our patients complain that ‘they just don’t feel themselves’ or they experience what they call a Jekyll and Hyde situation where they don’t recognise themselves and the way that they behave/feel in the week/s leading up to their period. These changes can affect a patient’s work and home life and can put great strain on their relationships. What is PMS? Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the name given to the physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms that can occur in the two weeks before a woman’s monthly period.

There are many different symptoms of PMS, but typical examples are: • fluid retention • breast tenderness • mood swings • feeling irritable • energy changes etc. These symptoms usually improve when the woman’s period starts, and they disappear a few days afterwards. Orthodox treatment of PMS Oftentimes, when patients visit their GP about PMS they are prescribed the contraceptive pill or anti-depressants. If there is a hormonal imbalance or a problem with how the body responds to the hormonal changes through the cycle then the contraceptive pill will not help. Why would giving a patient more ‘synthetic hormones’ be helpful when, potentially, they already have a problem with the balance and clearance of their own hormones. Anti-depressants are also a problem for most patients as they don’t feel depressed the rest of the month and don’t see why they should take a mood elevator for the rest of their life. Unfortunately GP’s do not have drugs that assist the body in hormonal balance. On the NHS website there is a video about PMS and the GP states that: ‘They (women with PMS) have a hormonal problem and the logical treatment is the suppression of these hormonal changes.’ He goes on to say that it is possible to give a pill which stops

the cycles. They then have no periods, no cycles, no PMS. But is it right to stop your body from menstruating? As Herbalists we believe that the menstrual cycle is a natural process and should not be suppressed. The reproductive hormones (i.e. the ones involved in your menstrual cycle) affect other hormones too – like the hormones that control your blood sugar balance, the ones that control your metabolism and your ‘stress’ hormones. I have treated women in the past who have been given the contraceptive pill to control PMS only to find that when they come off it their menstrual cycles are all over the place and their PMS symptoms are even worse. This is because the root cause of the problem has not been treated. Herbal Medicine for PMS Treating PMS herbally is fairly complex and is usually following a consultation where a specific herbal mix is dispensed. What works for one woman with pre-menstrual symptoms would not necessarily work for another, as every woman is different and the symptoms she experiences are different. A consultation is conducted in person at our Hythe clinic and usually lasts one hour. Herbalists often prescribe herbs that work on the Nervous System, The Endocrine System (i.e. the hormonal system) and the Digestive System/ Liver.

Why not take a look at their website for articles on a wide range of ailments and to find out more about how they might be able to help you.

Why I Love England A series of cameos on the theme of “Why I love England” through the eyes of a Swedish-born resident of Hythe observing the life and times of the town. By Margaretha Kirkham

Silver Surfer / Octogenarian Done breakfast. Washed dishes. Loaded car with shopping bags. Back after an hour. Washed vegetables. Stuffed fridge and freezer. Now what? Husband off to meeting. Poetry Corner by Joe Thomas

(Sandgate Writers)

A Dead Cert I’m informed by a reliable source, who’s related to a jockey of course, that Napoleon a ten year old grey is destined to win the 3.30 today.

The four runners sprint off the line, with my horse last - the rest doing fine. At the first fence the mare Blue Bird allows my no hoper to slip into third,

He says. ‘If he keeps a steady pace he’s guaranteed to win the race:

and at the fifth with Star short of space, Napoleon slips into second place,

it’s all been arranged my sonthe nag will win at fifty to one.’

then suddenly the leader covered in foam, dramatically falls a furlong from home;

To ignore this would be a sin so I wager five hundred to win.

so Napoleon is first of course pity the jockey isn’t on the horse.

Seasonal Recipe

Lamb and Aubergine Curry Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.

Ingredients • 3 tbsp sunflower oil • 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • 400g sieved tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve

Method 1. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. 3. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30

4. minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed. 5. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

Tip - You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most

supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Peter Green My name is Peter Green and my aim is to raise over £1million pounds for my chosen charities before the end of 2015. I am raising money for the four leading cancer centres in the UK and for Together for Short Lives; the charity that supports all children and young people living with terminal or life threatening illness.

Many of the challenges that I have chosen to undertake are very much based on things that I have never really been good at, and will no doubt push my resolve to the limit.

I’d like to share with you a small part of my plans, and feelings, and if you’d like to follow my progress, or sponsor me, that would be fantastic. Either way, I hope you’ll enjoy the journey…

For example… Until May 2011 I was a holiday swimmer. I never achieved my 25 length swimming certificate at Primary School and preferred to ‘bob around’ in a pool. As part of this challenge, I’m now training to swim the English Channel.

Sometimes we do not know what is worth doing until we actually do it and reflect upon it. My challenges are what I call “My Bucket List” - My bucket list is not about me dying, but about me living and helping others as I challenge myself both physically and mentally to achieve the goals of ‘My Bucket List’.

Whilst I can run up hills and mountains much faster than most cyclists, I dislike cycling immensely; the last time I owned a bicycle was in the 4th year of school and it had ‘cow horns’. As part of this challenge, I have set myself the task to cycle and run around Scotland, in pursuit of conquering “The Munro’s”, and then the entire coastline of Britain. I am perhaps what you call a ‘big lump’ and prefer performing in milder climates but I want to face the

P20

extremities that many of the ‘Bucket List’ challenges will bring; the cold of the sea or Arctic, the heat of the Sahara or the tough terrain of the Highlands; after all my philosophy is that ‘Because one day I won’t be able to’. Yes, I have set myself some tough goals but these pale into insignificance to the challenges faced by many individuals and their families on a daily basis. I will not let it obscure the rest of what matters in life. If you can help me in some small way to support other ordinary people and their families, those that are leading extraordinary lives as a result of fighting cancer or a terminal illness, wouldn’t it be time well spent if we can keep families together that little bit longer?

Please mention “The Hythe Handbook” when responding to adverts

At the end of “My bucket list”, I will have reached my 50th birthday.

Visit www.letsraiseamilliontogether.blogspot.com for more information or to get in touch.

Please get involved, we can me make a real difference and help keep families where they belong, together for longer.

Lasting Power of Attorney thousands of pounds over the years. The OPG takes control of your finances and the receiver has to continuously obtain authorisation from them to pay certain expenses on your behalf. Additional authorisation means additional fees. Everybody should have a Lasting Power of Attorney to save their family expense, grief and aggravation at a time they need it least.

A vital document enabling a person to appoint another they trust to manage their affairs when they are unable to act for themselves due to the loss of mental capacity through illness, accident, dementia or stroke for example.

Without this document your spouse, relatives or friends cannot legally act on your behalf. They must apply to the Court of Protection, also known as the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) who investigates the background of the person applying to decide if they are ‘fit’ to be appointed ‘receiver’. To apply to be a ‘receiver’ your family member or friend must complete 50 pages of forms giving huge amounts of personal information about themselves, their family, their own personal finances and their relationship with you, the person they wish to care for. If they are appointed as a receiver, the OPG charges numerous fees to supervise their activities; commencement fees, an account fee, transaction fees, accountants fees and finally a winding up fee which can all add up to P34

Wet Rooms by Katherine Sorrell They’re hip, they’re hot and they’re wet, wet, wet – and no, we’re not talking about an Eighties pop band, but the aspirational trend for bathrooms. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you need to know before installing a wet room or walk-in shower. What can go wrong?

Collage 1200mm corner panel with standard brace bar, £510; JT40 1200x800mm shower tray, £225; Roman shower basket, £125; concealed twin and multi-function hand set, £820; Jasper Morrison 50cm basin, £124; Bristan Quadrant mono basin mixer, £279; all Bathrooms 365, 01454 417111; www.bathrooms365.com

Just what is a wet room anyway? In a conventional wet room, the whole bathroom is, potentially, the shower area. There’s no step up into the shower cubicle – in fact, there’s no shower cubicle; instead, the room is tanked (treated to make it completely waterproof) and given a floor drain and a decentsized shower head. Add a conventional loo and basin, and bingo, you have a wet room.

Why would I want one? Wet rooms done well are stylish, contemporary and seen as the last word in luxury, and some say they add value to a property – though it must be added that this seems P36

to apply mainly to high-end, urban homes rather than your average suburban semi or country cottage. If you enjoy an indulgent shower then a wet room gives you an unparalleled sense of freedom and space (you can even design it so you have a view); and if your bathroom is on the small side then removing the bath will give you loads more room. Wet rooms should be easier to keep clean, too – no fiddling around the screen or tray, just a mop over as necessary, which is especially easy if you fit a wall-mounted basin and WC. Finally, wet rooms can be better for older people or anyone with impaired mobility, as there’s no step up into the shower to negotiate.

It’s not advisable to convert your only bathroom into a wet room – potential buyers tend to want at least one bath and, what’s more, you do need access to a dry loo and basin, especially if there’s more than one of you in the household. In a family bathroom a wet floor may create problems for small children. As with all home improvements, adding an inappropriately over-thetop wet room to an otherwise ordinary house is not a good idea. Without good ventilation a wet room can all too quickly become musty and mouldy. And, last but by no means least, there’s every wet room owner’s nightmare – a failure in the tanking resulting in leaks and damp patches.

Can I have a wetroom without the potential problems? Absolutely. You can create a walk-in shower, which is larger than usual, at floor level for ease of access, and just as streamlined and chic. The advantage is that it has its own below-floor drainage area and is enclosed by a good-looking glass panel: thus the water is contained in one area (so no soaked loo roll), and the room won’t need such extensive preparation with regard to drainage and tanking. The risk of leaks is reduced – though there are no guarantees. The disadvantage is that a walk-in will take up more space than a standard shower cubicle.

Please mention “The Hythe Handbook” when responding to adverts

What are the technicalities?

the room, which could mean having to re-size the doorway.

Wet rooms are often recommended for ground floors and basements, where the sub-floor is more likely to be solid. In a first-floor installation it’s more tricky. You may need to strengthen joists in order to bear the load of heavy stone tiles; you’ll certainly need to ensure that the floor is stable, as wooden joists that flex could create cracks in tiles or waterproofing. In all cases you need to create a suitable drainage slope, either with a ‘former’ and suitable levelling compound, or a pre-formed tray set into the floor. To accommodate waste fittings, you may need to raise the entire floor level of

Really good tanking is vital. It may be in the form of impermeable sheeting or a trowelled-on sealant, and should be applied to the entire floor of the wet room or walk-in, the walls that are likely to become wet, and extend beyond by 50cm each side. Another option for walls is to use prefabricated waterresistant boarding. In both cases it is necessary to seal vulnerable areas (corner joints and pipework penetrations) using a special sealing strip. Then there’s your water supply. If you have low water pressure or a small tank, for example, you may need to fit a bigger tank or add a

pump. Finally, ventilation. Fit a really good extractor fan, following building regulations religiously (ask advice from your local planning authority), and avoid condensation by also having some form of heating in the room, whether underfloor or radiators.

Fit Exercise Around A Job And Busy Lifestyle! So many people in today’s world use ‘Oh I just haven’t got the time’ as a reason for not exercising. It’s true that it can be hard to fit exercise around your job as well as a busy lifestyle, but mark my words it is far from impossible. There is a common misconception amongst people that exercising will just tire you out; this is obviously true to a certain extent, but in fact regular exercise is proven to make you feel much more refreshed and invigorated throughout the day. Everyday tasks that maybe you sometimes struggle with e.g. walking to work, will become much easier after a period of exercise, in turn improving how you feel mentally and physically. It is clear that regular exercise can have a positive effect on your lifestyle; here are 3 ways to help you incorporate regular exercise into your busy life: 1. Planning – Always plan when to exercise and what particular exercise you will be doing, for example, if you finish work early on a certain afternoon of the week then say ‘Right! That’s when I’m going to exercise’ and make sure you stick to it! 2. Exercise at home – If you haven’t got time to get to the gym exercising at home can be a great way of getting fit at no cost, and there’s also a time saving measure, which is obviously a positive. A quick circuit training session, core workout, Pilate’s … or a run (obviously not in the house!) can be perfect when you have a free 30 min in the day. 3. Goals – Setting short term goals such as work out 3 times this week, lose 3 pounds in a fortnight will help increase motivation to exercise even if you feel you haven’t got time. A small investment in a pair of dumbbells, a new pair of trainers or even a slightly larger investment in an exercise bike or cross trainer will act as a huge motivation to exercise. Exercising 3-5 times a week could make a busy life become much more manageable P40

and enjoyable. I cannot stress the importance of good planning enough. So have a sit down and work out what free time you have pick when you want to exercise and go out there and do it. Now is a great time to start making positive changes to your life. Good luck, Andy King, AK Health & Fitness

The Evil Weevil by Pippa Greenwood hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs which feed and grow until they reach full size.

What Can You Do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants, including their roots, carefully for foliage damage before introducing anything new to your garden. Avoid re-using compost in containers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot.

The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) will always feature in any gardening poll of ‘top pests’. They’re an immensely successful pest; there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000 eggs during the summer. If you have them in your garden, whether you like it or not, you probably need to get to know better.

How Do You Know You Have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to nearly any surface. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see the weevil. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually on the lower, most accessible leaves.

The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown head. You’ll find them in the compost or soil, close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding on. Unless you’re removing a plant you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it’s when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring.

What Do Vine Weevils Attack? Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers. They’re a greater problem on perennial plants and those with fleshier roots or tubers. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March and May, but also at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are dark brown, less than 1mm diameter and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs

As vine weevils can’t fly, making barriers is relatively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around the rim of containers, use a gritty mulch to reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch and try creating miniature moats around the legs of greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a bowl of water. Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls. They’re available from mail order suppliers (including www. pippagreenwood.com) and seed catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively, keep the area moist, so that the nematodes can move through the compost to attack the grubs, entering their bodies and producing a bacterial infection to kill them. The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and work best during August and September.

Visit the new products area on Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great selection of products - signed copies of Pippa’s books, Grower Frames, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, delightful terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots, lots more!
