Editors Letter Hello Readers, I’m sorry to say that summer has come to an end; but before we cosy up with our blankets and hot beverages, I recommend we take time to enjoy the more colourful season. I once spoke to an artist about painting an autumn evening sky, and he told me that artists don’t use the same colours that they see, because if they did – with all the pinks, purples and oranges – no one would believe it.

However; if you’ve got any pictures of these brilliant autumn colours that you think would make for a vibrant cover, we’d love to see them. We’d love to see them even if you don’t think they’d make good covers! This edition brings you all things arts and crafts. We’ve got societies and clubs for you to join, craft classes for you to attend and local businesses that you can trust to do it for you with great skill and

enthusiasm. You never know, you may discover a skill you never knew you had! If you know of or run a local business, and want to get involved with this community magazine, whether it’s for an advert or editorial then please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re really quite nice people, and the more the merrier! Or even if you know of an event in your town, we’d like to hear about it. We pride ourselves in doing our local businesses proud, and will strive to continue the good work. So until next time! Please do continue to get in touch with any thoughts, comments or ideas for the coming editions. With kindest regards,

Tuija

Shoreline Vintage

Is your room missing something? A piece that could tie it all together? Something like a reinvented piece from the 1920’s or maybe a revived French find? This may sound specific, but that’s because Shoreline Vintage specialise in selling refurbished furniture. This relaxed and friendly business blossomed from the interest Lisa had after wanting a change of direction, and snowballing into what it is now. Shoreline Vintage has recently relocated to no. 9 Hythe High Street from a shop in Folkestone, in which they sell refurbished furniture as well as products from a company called Pink Lily who is a textile artist that specialises

in free motion embroidery and has a range of products such as door stops, pictures, soft furnishings and wooden signs. The furniture of Shoreline Vintage is painted with an eco-friendly chalk paint called Autentico which is produced in Kent. It has a high adhesion rate, no chemicals, low VOC which means no plastics in it, sticks to all surfaces from woods to laminates and is just the thing you need to restore some life and love to your furniture. The mother and daughter team also sell the paint in the shop and have a range for outdoors as well; so all of your refurbishment needs can be met. Even if you already own the piece and it just needs a little life put back into it, they can handle that too.

most, she replied ‘Dressers, or any piece of furniture that is decorative and pulls a room together’ and with their varied clientele growing every day, maybe now is the perfect time to revamp your furniture and love that piece again. Shoreline Vintage would also love to keep in touch with everyone through Facebook, and to see pictures of these reborn pieces in their rightful place.

Quite quickly you should produce a moist and very tasty breadcrumb mixture. Press this mixture firmly onto the upper side of the fillets. Roast for approximately 20 minutes, or until the crust is brown. Serve with whatever takes your fancy!

Emily and Me Floristry Workshops started secondary school here and it is to our benefit, and it would be a waste not to take her up on her offer. Based in Lympne, the list of what Samantha can do with flowers is long; from wedding bouquets and buttons holes, to corporate, Christmas, and sympathy arrangements. All of these forms she is willing to share with you at the workshops.

Everyone needs a creative outlet, and for Samantha Reynolds her lifelong passion has been for flowers and floristry; and now she wishes to invite you to join her and experience the craft for yourself.

The next workshop will be on Thursday 3rd October at the Dolls House in Hythe starting at 10:30am to 1:30pm, and will cover things such as hand tied bouquets, table decorations and closer to Christmas door wreaths and many other floral delights. All the tools, flowers, pots etc. will be provided, along with tea, coffee and cake, and all for only £45, although there are discounts available through their Facebook page. Everyone is really friendly and the opportunity so rare, that it could be one of the most interesting ways to pick up a skill you can enjoy for years to come.

Samantha originally trained in Knightsbridge, London, with the celebrity florist and author Judith Blacklock, of which she placed top of her class in their final assignment, and has since worked with Laura Leong, Marco Wamelink (stylist to the V&A, The Dorchester, The Savoy, Claridges and Vanity Fair Magazine), Lynne Dallas (consultant to Purely Roses UK, Australian TV veteran and Chelsea Flower Show exhibitor who has graced many magazines), author Alan Peck and Dawn Jennings (Chelsea Flower Show, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace). Why would you pass up an opportunity to work with someone who has learnt from the best? Now she is returning to Kent after retraining in London, as her daughter has recently P12

Folkestone Book Festival - back to inspire once again! Let us excite you with literary gems this autumn!

Lionel Shriver

15 – 24 November 2013 With curator Geraldine D’Amico at the helm once again you are invited to join the Folkestone Book Festival from 15 – 24 November for a journey of discovery. Scale the highest peaks of the world with mountain climber Doug Scott, brave the frontline of the First World War with Kate Adie or sail the seven seas as a Tudor explorer. This year’s festival is packed with adventure, inspiration and new ideas. It is also a festival to make you laugh at middle class foibles and dream of night time adventures with a magical lion. There is something for everyone at this year’s festival regardless of age or taste. Geraldine says, “We hope to throw some light on our history from merchant adventures to suffragettes, castle builders to nuclear physicists, to help understand and offer a forum to discuss the ailing NHs, war on terror and what the future is for today’s young people.” A guaranteed highlight of this year’s calendar is the presentation by Lionel Shriver. A notable author who is known best for her award winning novel We Need to Talk About Kevin, a book that became a silver screen adaptation starring Tilda Swinton. Now she joins the Book Festival to talk about her new book Big Brother, in which the main character is shocked at the dramatic change in her brother’s appearance. Author Lionel Shriver will be discussing and debating a number of the issues and questions that arise in her novel. Why do we overeat? How much sacrifice will we make to P20

save a single member of our family? Is it ever possible to save loved ones from themselves? Essential and unmissable! With so many fabulous offers available there is no excuse not to join in. Early bird tickets, extended concessionary rates and exclusive dining opportunities from Rocksalt, Smokehouse and Blooms make this year’s Book Festival quite possibly the best yet. Whether you are a book worm or not brighten those cold November nights with something new and exciting. Here are 10 reasons why you should come to the Folkestone Book Festival 2013: • All writers are wonderful storytellers and we are bringing you the best from novelists Dorothy Koomson to Lionel Shriver. • Be inspired by mountaineer Doug Scott, artist Cornelia Parker, musician Jim Bob or doctor Kevin Fong. • Have fun at the big book group, laugh at bourgeois peculiarities or spend a great evening at the Friends Quiz.

• Debate burning issues such as religion, war on terror, the future for young people, the NHS and others. • Explore the past with Kate Adie, Antony Beevor and other historians. • Bring the kids, explore different worlds and take part in family workshops. • Learn about local history from the Romans to today. • Shine at our open mic evening! • Take part in the festive Xmas Lights Switch On parade and celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with us. • Do your Christmas shopping and impress your friends with signed copies of great books. Whether you are a reader or not, the festival will entertain, captivate, illuminate and hopefully open new horizons. See you there! www.folkestonebookfest.com

BIOGRAPHIES

ŠKODA Rapid 1.6 TDI Elegance By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer

www.carwriteups.co.uk

@carwriteups

THIS MOTOR is more budget than bling; but that in itself is no problem. The new hatchback from ŠKODA has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle. When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. The plastic trim is disappointing compared with, say, the more executivefocused ŠKODA Superb but, in its favour the flagship ‘Elegance’ grade, on test here, does come stacked with kit. Key features include cruise control; electrically heated door mirrors, multi-function steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and air conditioning. It’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel

too; the height adjustable seating and adaptable reach/rake steering column makes this possible. If you opt for the Elegance model you’ll also benefit from 16-inch alloys, cornering front fog lamps, rear electric windows, and chrome interior detailing. But no matter which variant of the Rapid you drive, you’ll find access to the boot easy and the load space square and practical in this, the seventh car in ŠKODA’s award-winning range. Crucially, With Benefit in Kind (BIK) ratings from only 14 percent, the ŠKODA Rapid is expected to provide a shot in the arm to the brand’s rapidly growing fleet sales. On-theroad pricing starts from £12,900 for the Rapid 1.2-litre 75PS in entry level S trim, rising to £17,850 for the Rapid 1.6 TDI CR 105PS in flagship Elegance spec.

Diy Di iy fo iy f for or r beginners beg be egi giin gin nners nn er rs rs Repair that break!

A slip of the hand can easily knock a lovely mug over but if it breaks cleanly into a few pieces you can often repair it. With a porous pottery item a two part epoxy glue is the way to go. Make sure the joint is clean, and pop the item onto newspaper. Use a nail to dab a little onto one of the joints. Bring both pieces together, wipe the excess with acetone and stand for 24 hours.

Diy Di iy fo iy f for or r beginners beg be egi gin gin inn nner ers rs rs Soapy screws

Ok bear with us on this one but it really is a great tip! Wood screws turn more easily in tight fitting holes when the threads are rubbed with a slightly wet bar of soap. They’ve been doing this since the 1950’s but it seems our generation has forgotten these fabulous, obvious ideas. Have a go - your granddad would be proud.

HAIR COUTURE Shiny, healthy hair

The best way to keep your hair in top condition is to visit your hairdresser regularly. If you like your style and it’s working for you, then a trim every 6 weeks will keep it looking fresh and easy to maintain at home. Removing dry, split ends will help the condition of the hair too. However, if you want to grow your hair then visit the hairdressers every 9 to 12 weeks otherwise it’ll never grow—don't make the mistake of never visiting the salon, you need your hair to be in great condition, split end free and cut into a definite style, even if you’re growing it! Leaving any cuts longer than 12 weeks will result in dry, scraggy ends with no style definition that gets harder and harder to look good. To get the most out of your hair there are certain things you can change in your daily routine to make hair healthier and shiner. For example, when washing your hair using the flats of your fingers (the spongy pads) not your fingertips or nails, is more beneficial for your scalp and blood flow stimulation. Rinse your hair for 2 minutes—time yourself. Hair will shine if rinsed really well. Avoid excessive heat damage—don't use the straighteners every day and when you do use them, use a heat protective spray. Get in the habit of holding your dryer at least 5 inches away from your hair. If you hold it any closer it will damage your hair—test it on your hand and see how fast you pull away when holding it close to your skin! Diet is crucial—healthy hair needs a healthy diet, and as strong, new healthy hair growth relies on getting a good blood supply through the follicle, eating the right foods can really impact hair health dramatically. Blood producing foods like nuts, seeds (linseed is particularly good) and dark berries (such as blueberries) are excellent. Try incorporating them into your diet by sprinkling onto breakfast cereals or getting to the health food shop and stocking up for snacking throughout the day.

Child & Family Photographs

I specialise in family photographs and am particularly skilled at getting the best of children when they are in front of the camera. I have often experienced that special moments are not just taken on special occasions; family photos don't have to be formally posed. A snapshot at a birthday party, a print from a picnic, a shot at the beach or a portrait at home will all evoke special memories to visit time and again. See my website for more details and special offers.

FITNESS Is skimmed milk making you ill and fat? by John Hill

I want to switch gears for a second here and talk about the debate between skimmed milk and whole milk. In line with low fat theories and many diets, we are told that skimmed milk is better because the fat content is lower than whole milk. Most of us, including myself, used to go with this theory. The question is why do we think this is a good idea? The fact that skimmed milk makes up 60% of the milk consumption in this Country and roughly the same amount are overweight or obese, doesn’t surprise me much! Let me bring in our old friend “common sense” for a second. Why on earth would you interfere with any food? This, for me at least, is the real question we need to ask ourselves. I discussed the benefits of drinking milk previously and that it isn’t an essential part of the human diet after weaning. Based on this, why would we drink something that A) We don’t need and B) Mankind has interfered with? The history of skimmed milk When you start reading about skimmed milk, the first think I read was this... “Historically skimmed milk was used to fatten pigs”. This doesn’t fill you with much confidence about the health benefits of skimmed milk. I can’t really find the exact time or reason when skimmed milk was first made but it looks like the late 1500’s by all accounts. Put simply, skimmed milk is full fat milk with all the butter fat removed. This was traditionally done after milking, however, it is rumoured that farmers in New Zealand have genetically modified some cows to be able to produce skimmed milk (which worries me!) What is taken out to make skimmed milk? As mentioned, when skimmed milk is made, the butter fat is taken from whole milk. This does not enhance the quality or nutrient content of the milk. It actually makes it worse. This is because alongside fat, also goes the fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E & K. These vitamins are responsible for P38

everything from bone health to strengthening the immune system. The other factor to consider is that milk is quite sugary (lactose) if the fat is removed then all you are left with is very sugary milk. This can have benefits after a weight session for example if you are looking to get some glycogen into the muscles but for most of us, the slowing of the insulin is the hormone that drives excess fat storage. When I have used whole milk with people rather than skimmed milk, the effect has been increased fullness for longer and reductions in sugar cravings. Skimmed milk CLA & cancer This gets a bit controversial now I guess. CLA is Conjugated linoleic acid and it’s found in eggs and grass fed animals like cows. The problem with low fat and grain fed cattle, the level of CLA are depleted. Unless you are buying good quality full fat organic milk (or even raw milk) you will not get the benefits of CLA. CLA has been shown to help the body metabolize fat better and help with weight management. In relation to CLA, CLA is a powerful anticarcinogen and can offset any potential damage of betacellulin. To keep this as simple as possible, CLA is only found in the fat of milk so remove the fat and remove the CLA. Conclusion The question I will always ask, is milk necessary? The answer to that question (from a nutrient perspective) is no but if you do like milk make sure you get good quality whole, full fat milk. That may be good news to some of you!

Why Not Fix he will do both home repairs or if people would prefer, anyone can drop things to him from between 7:30am and 9pm so as to work around you, the client. Depending on the product, he promises to repair that day if not within the hour, rather than sending your item off for a couple of weeks to be fixed elsewhere. Besides, these are trusted hands you’re leaving your item with; Andy has studied Electronics and Mechanical engineering and gained experience working for various companies, so you know you’re getting the best service for a lower price. The reason I think he’s worth recommending is his enthusiasm. Whilst speaking to him it wasn’t just that he said he enjoyed what he does, it was clear in his voice. This is a man who won’t stop until your item is fixed because he truly believes there’s life in it yet.

For someone who spends her life on her computer, phone, with hair straighteners close at hand and a million other electrical items in my home, it’s comforting to know there’s a handy man just a phone call away. Andy from Why not fix? had enough of the corporate world and decided to work for himself, something he’s always wanted to do. With his passion for fixing broken things rather than throwing them away, his business has snowballed from hair straighteners to laptops, ipods, ipads and mobiles, domestic appliances and anything else you may have that’s broken. “Things are made to break nowadays, but I begrudge throwing things away. Every appliance is a challenge and I will not be beaten by it”. This fighting talk is just what the doctor ordered in a time when replacing things are not cheap. He’s based in Hawkinge though P42 P42

Plant of the Month

Originating in South Africa, these bold and striking plants have become extremely popular in recent years, entering into a modern garden setting with as much ease as they do a traditional mixed border.

AGAPANTHUS

Often known as African Lilies, they are tall and statuesque but despite their high maintenance appearance, actually require little upkeep, and with a little bit of TLC will survive a British Winter outdoors. They are drought tolerant and a good choice for coastal areas, coping well with wind and salty air. Their flowers will peak during July and August and whether or not they are grown in pots or in beds, always make sure they are mulched during winter.

Poetry Corner by Irene Finch Do you hear that plaintive call? Yes! It’s a Blackbird sitting on the wall He’s singing to his long-time mate Please come home and don’t be late Now, you hear her distant response Singing, happily, I’ll be home at once Opps!! He’s fighting off a stubborn rival To ensure his own offsprings survival Now to the Bay Tree – hop, hop together

Blackbirds

While he feeds her with only the best At last their little ones do appear Both mother and father always near Look! They are sharing another chore, to teach their babies more and more All too soon the fledglings must start To leave their home for some foreign part They’ll separate and fly away To repeat the process another day

To build their home and mate forever

Blackbirds, Blackbirds, come back for me,

She sits on her blue eggs in the nest

So I can hear your love songs in our Bay tree.
