Hythe Venetian Fete Society

It’s countdown to splash-down for Hythe’s aquatic carnival Processions of floating tableaus, plenty of live music and family fun entertainment, a grand firework display, a touch of pageantry, a cast of hundreds, an audience of thousands - that’s the Hythe Venetian Fete, set to return to the Royal Military Canal on Wednesday, August 19. Final preparations are well under way and the event is planned to be the best yet, says the Hythe Venetian Fete Society, its not-for-profit organiser.

take place. Led by a ceremonial barge carrying the mayors of the Confederation of Cinque Ports in full regalia, followed by four popular bands, each leading a group of floats, the tableaus will move slowly along a half-mile stretch of the canal.

Gates open at 4pm, events start at 5pm and there’ll be plenty going on to entertain spectators until the main programme begins at 6.45.

After an interval for spectators to enjoy refreshments, a funfair, canal-side activities and a spectacular firework display, the second procession will start at 8.50, when floats will be illuminated and thousands of lights twinkle from trees along the processional route.

Then, the first of two waterborne processions of decorated floats, each with a humorous, historic or topical theme, will

The Fete Society has also organised free band concerts on the canal bank on August 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Preparations are going to plan and tickets are selling well, according to the Society. But a greater amount of advance funding would be welcome, says John Schoner, chairman of the organising committee. “The Venetian Fete costs £130,000 to produce. While most of the money comes from ticket sales, the event relies heavily on the support of its main sponsors - the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Smiths Medical (Portex), Hythe Town Council, Waitrose, Hythe Imperial Hotel, Universal Fireworks, Gopak, Lawrence & Co, Dungeness ‘B’ Power Station and Holiday Extras. “Without their help and that of the sponsors of prizes and the five pre-fete band concerts plus the hours of time given by the people who design and make the floats and by the hundreds of volunteers whose work makes Fete Day go with a swing - the Venetian Fete would not be possible”. Seasonal Recipe by Hythe Brasserie

Smoked Haddock, Cod and Leek gratin – serves 4 This one is a great favourite at lunchtime but fantastic for a family supper at home. Ingredients: 1lb (500g) each of natural smoked Haddock and Cod, filleted and boned 1 leek, chopped ½ pint of milk (full fat or semi skimmed) 1 oz (25g) plain flour 1 oz (25 g) butter 2 oz (50g) breadcrumbs Salt and Pepper Juice of 1 lemon (in 2 halves) Butter for cooking fish and leeks 4 oz (100g) grated gruyère cheese (or a good, mature cheddar) Method: Pre-heat the oven to 200°C or gas 7. Place the fish on a buttered baking tray, sprinkle with half of the lemon juice and cook for 10-12 minutes until just firm. Allow to cool slightly and flake the fish into a warmed oven dish or 4 individual gratin dishes if preferred. Fry the leeks in butter until soft and sprinkle over the fish. To make the sauce: Melt the butter and stir in the flour. Cook gently until sandy texture. Gradually add in the milk, stirring well over a low heat.

Bring to the boil and cook for 1 minute. Season to taste, and add the remaining lemon juice. If the sauce is a little thick you can always add more milk. Pour the sauce over the fish and top with the breadcrumbs and cheese. Place under a hot grill until the cheese browns and the sauce bubbles. Delicious served with crusty bread and salad or a slice of wholemeal soda bread as per our last recipe! TIPS: Usual we recommend seasoning fish before baking but in this case the smoked haddock will be salty enough. For gluten free method, substitute Dove’s Farm gluten free plain flour in your sauce and either omit the breadcrumbs completely or crush some ready salted crisps and top with the cheese. Gluten free breadcrumbs tend to go somewhat soggy!

Band Coup – A Once In A Lifetime Event Hythe meets Broadway on Friday June 26 when the world famous New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army hits town! The previous evening the band will have stared in concert with the Black Dyke band and the following weekend they will play at the O2 Arena as part of the Salvation Army’s 125th celebrations. The 36 piece band brings not only traditional brass band music but all the razzamatazz associated with Broadway. Organiser Richard Carroll said, “The band is undertaking a short tour of the UK prior to their appearance at the O2 Arena. When I knew the band were putting together a tour I made a bid which has proved successful, beating much bigger

Lieutenant Callum McKenna, Salvation Army Officer, Hythe, added, “The band will perform in the Tower Theatre on Friday June 26 at 7.30pm. Tickets are just £8 adult or £5 children and can be bought at the theatre or by phoning 01303 223925, but hurry they are selling fast. Then on Saturday June 27th at 10.15am the band will lead

the Armed Forces Day parade through Hythe and provide the music for the service to be held outside Hythe Town Hall. Following the service the band will take centre stage to be addressed by the Mayor before giving a short concert. For more information phone Richard Carroll 01303 268354. Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: An un-neutered tom cat keeps spraying in my garden, and stealing my own cats’ food. He also scares my three cats who are all neutered. Any suggestions to keep this menace away?

Situations like this can be difficult. To stop the cat coming into the house, eating your cats’ food and scaring them it may be a good idea to get a cat-flap that recognises microchip numbers and can be programmed to only let cats in with certain chip numbers. These work well. To stop the cat coming into your garden is harder- if you can find out who his owners are you can maybe chat to them about getting him neutered. If he appears not to have owners you can approach one of the local cat charities that have neutering schemes. There are lots of commercial products on the market that are meant to discourage cats coming into your garden but they often don’t work that well. Good Luck!

Q: My dog is 13 and has been diagnosed with arthritis. Is there anything to add to his diet to help him?

Arthritis is a very common problem that affects dogs and cats as they get older. There are lots of nutritional supplements and complete diets on the market that may be of significant benefit both in reducing your dog’s symptoms and slowing the progression of the arthritis. Most of these supplements contain glucosamine and chondroitin. It is important to use one of these supplements that has been designed for dogs or cats as the human supplements are not very effective in animals. If you are worried about your dog why not phone your vet for advice? We hope your dog is doing well! Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

Please email your questions to Jane at Montgomery Vets: jane@montgomeryvets.co.uk

The Folkestone and Hythe Branch of Cats’ Protection is part of a national charity caring for neglected and abandoned cats. Costs are considerable, as the escalating number of cats coming into our care are given full health checks: blood tests, vaccinations, micro-chipping are just a few of the procedures with other, more costly treatments, sometimes being necessary. We also provide a heavily subsided neutering scheme for people on benefit and low incomes. Our group of fosterers provide an invaluable service, by caring for the many cats taken in before rehoming. Funds are raised through our shop at 139a High Street, Hythe, which has attracted an ever-increasing number of customers. If you feel you could give a cat a good home, or have a little time to spare to help, we would love to hear from you. Details can be obtained by calling:

Sky Dive for Pilgrims Pilgrims Hospices is launching a mass tandem sky dive at Headcorn Aerodrome on Saturday 26th September 2015. Over the years many individuals have taken part in a sky dive to raise funds for this vital local charity, however this will be an opportunity for 20 people to jump on the same day, all in aid of Pilgrims. So if you have ever dreamt about experiencing this fabulous thrill, this could be your perfect opportunity to do so. John Sabine, a social member of the Folkestone Rowing Club, who took part in an individual sky dive in December last year said: “I had always wanted to do a sky dive and the idea of raising funds for Pilgrims gave me the perfect excuse to do it. I would encourage anyone who wants to do one to sign up.” Richard Foulger, volunteer fundraiser said: “We are really excited by this new venture. It is already generating a lot of interest, so if you would like to find out more or book a place, contact the Ashford Fundraising Office 01233 504111 or email Richard.foulger@pilgrimshospices.org.

“Participants will need to raise a minimum of £385 in sponsorship and commit to taking part by 26th July.” Each year Pilgrims gives care and comfort to over 2,300 people in east Kent from our three hospice sites in Ashford, Canterbury and Thanet as well as in patients’ own homes. Support is also extended to families and carers and is given free of charge. Pilgrims needs to raise £11 million per year to provide this.

On your plot – start them young I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Jobs for July • Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. • Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. • Sow Spring cabbage. • Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?

Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! P24

What is Hypnotherapy? What is Hypnotherapy and how can it help? Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, used during hypnosis, which helps direct a client’s imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. People may choose to have hypnotherapy for a variety of reasons – they may want to learn to relax deeply; to change an unwanted habit; to conquer a fear such as public speaking or to enhance an aspect of their lives such as sports performance. In a typical hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist will ask the client questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle. The hypnotherapist and client will decide together on the changes or goals that are desired. Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical, dental and psychological problems. Areas of application include anxiety and stress conditions, weight control, addictive behaviours (including smoking, alcohol and substance misuse) and confidence issues. Hypnotherapy is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking.

When you meet with a hypnotherapist for the first time they will explore exactly what you want to achieve and how hypnotherapy may be able to help. Hypnotherapy works with the power of your unconscious mind and can often create positive benefits in a relatively short space of time. Hypnotherapy is acknowledged by the Royal Society of Medicine as an effective therapy for a whole variety of issues – and is not to be confused with such things as stage hypnosis.
