Shepherd Hut Studios Andrea Stoneman “Hythe has been so good to us!” is something my husband and I have said to one another on several occasions over the last 18 months. We, along with our 2 children, moved to Hythe in February 2014 looking for a change after taking a break following the birth of our daughter. I had been itching to get back in to life on the high street having previously run my own galleries in Skipton and in Dover, as well as having sold original paintings through Buckingham Fine Arts Publishing. Within only a few weeks of moving to Hythe I met Sue from the Peacock Rooms. Sue had previously been a customer of mine at “White Cliffs Gallery” in Dover and, once we both remembered who each other were, Sue kindly offered me the space to start to play with new designs and products. This was the beginning of Storybox, my first range in Hythe, and I was delighted with the reaction that it received. From this I looked to the local area for inspiration and started to produce some originals focusing on our own local landmarks. With the rediscovery of Dungeness, an area I had not visited since childhood, I found a new source of inspiration. This led directly to my latest range “The Coastal Collection” which has been my most successful to date. With the new ranges of work I found that I was running out of space, the dining room table was getting rather cluttered and the pictures seemed to be all over the house! I looked at the options for my own studio space at home and found a company on line who could build and deliver a shepherd hut which met all my needs. As this became my studio space I felt more and more attached to it and I knew it would play a part in my work in future. It was also at The Peacock Rooms that I met the very talented Sharon Furness of Dozy Mare
Designs who also displayed her wonderful range of homemade jewelry, cards and gifts. When the opportunity arose for my own gallery in Marine Walk Street I was delighted that Sharon agreed to be a part of the new venture. Our work complements one another’s nicely and we have the same creative approach so that we can bounce ideas off of each other. As well as being impressed at the space on offer both of us were struck by the similarity of the interior to the finish of my own Shepherd Hut, the resemblance really is uncanny. This is how Shepherd Hut Studios was born on May 2nd 2015 and we are thrilled that we can now show off our range of original paintings, cards, gifts, lampshades, cushions and prints. We have enjoyed the summer and the buzz that has been present in Hythe over the holidays and look forward to this continuing in to the future. With Paul Apps now opening his new fine art gallery 2 doors up and with Amazing Glaze next door, Marine Walk Street has become an artist haven of likeminded people.

Please do come along and see us all. Hythe and the local area are still inspiring my new originals along with my passion for Eastern European architecture and for classic fairy tales. All of the products you see within the gallery are created by Sharon and myself with a few items contributed by other talented locals from time to time. Hythe really has been good to us and we hope that we can also be good for Hythe.

Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: I would like to get a small
rescue dog but I am worried my three cats will object. What do you recommend to keep relations as diplomatic as possible?
Bringing a new pet into a three cat household can be problematical. A lot depends on the individual cats and dog involved and the environment you are introducing them all in. It may help to ensure that the cats have a dog-free area that they can always get to to relax if necessary and to keep the cats’ food, water and litter tray away from the dog. It may also help to give the cats some pheromone therapy with something like Feliway. This is available as a plug in diffuser and gives the cats a feeling of appeasement. We hope this goes well- it can be difficult and take quite a long time for everything to settle down.
Q: Why do some breeds of
dog suffer so with their anal glands? Is it right they must be regularly emptied by a vet?
There is a pair of anal glands either side of a dog’s anus. These secrete a very smelly substance that is used to mark territory and to communicate with other dogs. These glands are very important in wild dogs such as wolves but are not so important in the dogs we have domesticated. For this reason the glands often fail to empty effectively. The glands may also fail to empty properly when a dog has loose faeces as the glands are not stimulated to empty so well. When the glands are over-full you may see that the area becomes very uncomfortable for your dog and symptoms seen can be dragging the bottom on the floor, chewing at the tail base or chewing at a leg or a foot in frustration. If you think your dog has a problem like this you should take it to your vet. Most dogs never need their anal glands emptying but some dogs need them emptying any time from every few weeks to every few months. Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

Auto-Biographies Volvo V60 Hybrid
This ‘green’ Swede estate offers a tremendously comfortable ride. That is no surprise though, Volvos are known for their plush, supportive seats. On the car’s tailgate there’s a D6 badge. The reason is that the combined performance of the five-cylinder turbo diesel and electric motor puts the car firmly within the same brake horsepower range as the petrol powered, speedy, T6. The front wheels of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid are powered by a 2.4-litre oil-burner, producing 212bhp and a maximum torque of 324lb.ft. The rear axle is powered by an electric motor, producing 69bhp. This is supplied with power from an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed under the floor of the load compartment. The car has a syrupy smooth six-speed automatic transmission too. On the road, the V60 has three driving characteristics: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In Pure mode the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible. If the battery pack has been recharged with electricity from renewable sources, its range is up to 32 miles with no carbon dioxide emissions from the tailpipe. Hybrid is the standard setting whenever the Volvo is started. The diesel engine and electric motor cooperate to ensure optimal balance between driving pleasure and environmental footprint, and it has a total range of up to 621 miles.

Finally, in Power mode, the technology is optimised to give the V60 the maximum possible clout. The diesel engine and electric motor have a total power output of 212 + 69 brake horsepower and maximum torque of 324lb.ft +147lb. ft. The electric motor’s lightning-quick torque delivery contributes to the car’s acceleration from 0 to 62mph in just 6.0 seconds. All in all, Volvo’s eco offering is an attractive alternative to green German executive estate rivals.

Sunday 1 November until Sunday 15 November 2015 A new exhibition in Kent tells of the hundreds of First World War shipwrecks lying just off our shores Many are the final resting place of those who lost their lives when the vessels sank. There are approximately 700 wrecks off the south coast which were lost due to torpedo attacks, scuttling, hitting mines, collisions, bad weather, poor communication and misfortune. Fascinating and moving accounts of bravery and sacrifice surrounding these sites are being revealed by the Maritime Archaeology Trust through their Heritage Lottery Funded Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War project. Some of these stories, together with artefacts recovered from wrecks, are being displayed in a temporary exhibition being hosted by Kent Wildlife Trust Open 10am - 5pm (daily until end of Oct); 10am - 4pm (Wed to Sun, Nov) Romney Marsh Visitor Centre, Dymchurch Rd, New Romney, Kent, TN28 8AY DEDICATION OF THE GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE Sunday 1 November, 2015 2.30 – 3.30pm at The Garden of Remembrance, Sandgate Road, Folkestone The dedication of the 200 Remembrance Crosses placed in the Garden of Remembrance at the Christchurch Tower, Sandgate Road, takes place at 15:00 hrs on Sunday 3 November. Grass Roots - Is your garden doing Autumn this year? either the wind or the frost gets them, which sometimes only happens in October. Berries
Autumn is just as colourful and interesting as Spring so if you think your garden is a bit bare or boring at the moment, don’t worry because here are 4 ways to extend the colour and interest in your garden. Late flowering perennials Put in late flowering perennials such as Rudbeckias, Asters, Sedums, Persicaria, Echinacea, Crocosmia, Achillea, Anemone x hybrida and many more. Depending on how the weather has been during the year, these plants will start flowering at the end of July/beginning of August and carry on until
Put in plants that have berries. Well known examples are Pyracantha, roses, hollies and cotoneastesr but there are also many plants that are not so well known that have wonderful berries in the autumn if you do a little research. My personal favourites are Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’ which has a red seed capsule which opens to reveal a vivid orange seed and Viburnum opulus ‘Xanthocarpum’ which has an almost translucent orange berry which lasts on the bush well into the winter. Seedheads Plants such as grasses are also great value in the autumn garden as their seed heads last well into the winter even after the rest of
the plant has died back. Other plants with good seed heads include Phlomis ruselliana (Turkish sage), Acanthus mollis (Bears breeches), Sedum specatbile (Ice plant), fennel, teasels and poppies. By leaving the seed heads on the plant you create interest for yourself in 2 ways because not only is the actual seed head itself of structural interest and attractive to look at, especially if it has a glitter of frost on it, but it is an excellent food source for wild life and that is always interesting to watch too. Foliage Finally you can have plants that have good autumn colour in their foliage. All deciduous plants go through the same ‘end of season’ process but some do it in a more flamboyant way than others. Acers, Amelanchier, Cercidiphylum, Euonymus alatus, Quercus rubra (red oak) give spectacular displays.

I have always loved scuba diving and my fiancé and I would like to get married under the sea in the Caribbean. I am the only daughter and my parents are quite old fashioned. Two problems, my parents won’t give me enough money for the wedding, I want to fly out all my friends, and my parents at 68 and 79 feel they are too old to scuba dive. I feel hurt and upset that they are spoiling my dream wedding. DP Dear DP Spoilt and brat come to mind - how can you possibly expect your parents to pay for you and all your friends to go to the Caribbean, are they related to Richard Branson? No, no no! If you want this young lady, then you and your fiancé will have to buy a piggy bank and start saving! As for your parents not wanting to scuba dive, you can’t force them. Have you thought about getting hitched at your local pool? It would be a lot cheaper! Dear Aunty Polly My sister has a very hot looking boyfriend and I know that he fancies me. The other night I was making coffee and as I reached out to pick up the kettle so did he, our hands touched, I know he could feel the electricity that passed between us. I know that my sister loves him but, she doesn’t treat him like I would treat him. I think he wishes he had met me first. Should I reveal my love for him? VM
Dear VM Are you Mad? You would destroy your relationship with your sister for years – in fact it would never be put right. Has this poor clueless lad given you any indication that he is attracted to you? Trust me, if you continue and you go ahead and reveal your feelings you will end up very isolated from your whole family. My advice, avoid him, get out the house more and find your own boyfriend! Dear Aunty Polly I find I am obsessed with facebook, I keep checking what my friends are doing over and over again. I hide my mobile at work so no one can see I am looking. I feel like my life is just so dull, if I put a picture up and only a few people like it, it makes me feel worthless and uninteresting! Sometimes I feel jealous over how everyone is having fun. GL Dear GL If you think all those people’s lives look perfect, let me assure you they are not, it’s all edited and sanitised on facebook. Leave your phone off at work. Trust me living in the moment is a lot more fun than living through your phone! Let the jealousy go and instead of viewing your friend’s lives through the screen of a phone, why not visit them or even give them a call.

Help with Depression from The Resolve Clinic • Sadness and feeling weepy. • Numbness, lethargy and a loss of interest in things and activities you used to enjoy. • Wanting to hide away from people, perhaps even by staying in bed. • Constant tiredness and problems sleeping. • Loss of appetite, or eating to excess for the comfort it may bring. • Stress and frustration. • Irritability and aggression. • Feeling that you cannot cope.
What is Depression? Depression is a mood disorder characterised by low mood and a wide range of other possible symptoms, which will vary from person to person. An illness that can develop quickly or gradually, and be brought on by life events and/or changes in body chemistry. It can strike anyone, and is curable. Some experts look upon depression as a defence mechanism that one’s body adopts in order to escape from unbearable stress. In some cases, it could even
be a form of anger directed towards the self for not having lived up to one’s expectations, which may well have been set too high in the first place.
What Are The Signs Of Depression? The signs of depression are many, because this souldestroying illness affects each person differently, and in its degree of severity. You may be suffering from depression if, for a long time, you experience several of the following symptoms:
• Stress • Depression • Smoking • Losing Weight • Have you reached Crisis point? helping people to become as happy and fulfilled as they can" - Steve Bennett
