Editors Letter Dear Neighbours,
Welcome to the latest edition of the Hythe Handbook. This edition, we hear from Griggs of Hythe, who’ve recently moved to new premises – just over the way from their old building, they’re now in the old Lifeboat Station, still at Fishermans Beach. With the entrance of the building overlooking the sea, and top class products, it’s an excellent place to shop, and with beautiful views to boot! We’d like to thank Beatrice Cloake for allowing us to use her stunning painting of Hythe Bay for our front cover this edition. Isn’t it just beautiful? In Beatrice’s own, inspiring, words “I was born in France, the world of Art. My father was a Master in stained glass windows. They were all around us, even in our kitchen. As a child, I was waiting for the sun to shine. I had a fascination for the patches of colours falling on the floor from our windows. I think it is from these days that I got my passion for colours, light, sunshine and shadows. My very first painting was an apple and an Autumn leaf. I was 8 years old, it was in gouache. I have never forgotten
this experience. I can still see the colours that I wanted to lay on the paper. Nothing else mattered. This very day I wanted to become an artist. I have worked alongside my father in his studio, the rest is history. I have married a British citizen and came to live in UK in 1970. I love this wonderful place and will stay here for the rest of my life.” Beatrice is a Fine Art artist residing in Hythe. Her work can be viewed and purchased at www. beatricecloakefineart.com. If you don’t have access to the internet, please feel free to contact us at the handbook, and we’ll put you in touch with Beatrice. We hope you continue to enjoy the handbook. As ever, as our local community magazine, we are always delighted to hear of local positive news and events that we can help you to spread the word about. Please do continue to get in touch with any thoughts, comments or ideas for the coming editions. With kindest regards,
Tuija

On the mezzanine floor lives my favourite little cave of books, which so if you just want a quiet afternoon, grab a book, grab a coffee and just enjoy the friendly and calming atmosphere. I wouldn’t hold it against you if it took a couple of the stall holders to wrestle you out of that chair, because to me that sounds like bliss.
However, if ‘quiet time’ is a thing of the past, there is still plenty of space for children, so bring your little tykes and make it a party. Although when I was there, I saw quite a few sweeties and biscuits for sale, so you might want to bring your purse with looser strings… The Dolls House is such a wonderful, happy place, full to bursting of shiny, soft and sweet smelling delicious

Johnny Cotter Gone are the days of mediocre and mundane kitchens. Light and art are kicking down your kitchen doors and making themselves at home with the help of Johnny Cotter and his gallery. But if you think this art is just for hanging on the wall you are mistaken. The Johnny Cotter Gallery have brought out splash backs to be made to your requests. They range in price depending on size; and are splash, grease and water proof and can be cleaned as per a normal splash back. But what makes these splash backs so unique is each one is different, so that no two customers will have the same. Made to order, each one either takes inspiration from a piece of Johnny’s existing art or he creates something totally new for you after a short consultation to get a feel for what it is the client likes. Then several mock ups are made for approval before going into production.
P12
And should you visit the gallery and choose a piece of existing art and fall in love with it, as you undoubtedly would, and then ask for it to be transferred into a splash back, even then Johnny promises to change it slightly so that yours is still a unique splash back. ‘I will always endeavour to do this, as the fact that yours has been made especially for you means it’s far more personal,’ says Johnny Cotter.
However with the interest that is pouring in, Johnny understands the challenge he’s created for himself. It takes a week longer than his other pieces as it has to go through a different process before the foil backing is put on to protect the image. But each one is well worth the wait and a perfect way to bring colour into your kitchen.

Folkestone Owl Sanctuary
Don’t you just love Owls? Whether it’s their big bright eyes, gorgeous feathers or the swizzle head movement, it cannot be denied that Owls are wonderful creatures. However, not all Owls can live up to their ‘wise’ ideal, and some get themselves in trouble and get hurt. But fear not. The Folkestone Owl Rescue Sanctuary is there to look after these amazing birds and get them flying fit again.
‘You’d be surprised how many people have no idea we are here, until they call us to come and visit’ said Ryan. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve seen this cheerful chap with his birds in Folkestone Town Centre, as he goes there every Thursday and Saturday from ten until three and sits with the birds for people to meet them, stroke them, and donate to his cause.
This story starts in 1989, when Ryan Maxted visited a friend’s house and saw a barn Owl his friend was homing, and Ryan decided he wanted to do the same. With permanent injuries, these birds wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. The Owl Sanctuary currently has forty three Owls, which amount to seven different breeds and Ryan wants to encourage more people to visit the sanctuary, with no entry fee, to come and handle the glorious birds. ‘People take photos, paint or draw them. We even have some people who come for their birthdays and spend all day with the birds.’ It’s surprising that such a wonderful place can be found on our doorstep, as this Owl sanctuary is tucked down Downs Road. P20
about the birds, the sanctuary or how to get involved. And to everyone else, I plead with you to go visit the sanctuary to get a hands on tour of the work done there. Contact: The Folkestone Owl Sanctuary, 57 Downs Road, Folkestone, CT19 5PW or Call: 01303 259794.
Currently, Ryan is doing all this unpaid, and funds the sanctuary himself. They strive to make sure no bird is put down, but fed and sheltered with the help of donations from the general public. But this Parliament of Owls cannot survive without a little divine intervention. Or better yet, an intervention from you – the beautiful bird loving public. The Folkestone Owl Sanctuary are looking for sponsors, so if you own a business, or know of someone who does who’d like to make this dedicated man’s life a little easier by helping his local cause, his number is at the bottom, especially If you have any questions

Auto Biographies by Tim Barnes-Clay New SEAT Ibiza FR 2.0 TDI FAST FACTS • Max speed: 130 mph • 0-62 mph: 8.2 secs • Combined mpg: 60.1 • Engine: 1968 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 141 at 4200 rpm
IT MAY be too small for some, but SEAT’S most successful and wellknown model, the Ibiza, is looking hotter than ever. The latest incarnation of the Spanish super-mini has sharp looks and handling to match. Add SEAT’S bizarre day-glow colour schemes to the mix and you can guarantee your car will be the one that stands out in your neighbourhood. Even though space is tight in the rear, the sporty FR model, on test here, provides too many dynamic delights for you and your passengers to care. With a flick of the wrist the Ibiza will take corners like a race car. There is very little roll and the flat-bottomed steering wheel is precise and inspires confidence. The gears are slick, although the gearstick feels rather flimsy. The great news for aficionados of SEAT’s sporty FR trim is that it now inhabits an even more
PROS ‘N’ CONS Looks Road holding Cabin Steering Flimsy gearstick X Rear space X P22
affordable place in the wide Ibiza range. The 2.0-litre TDI 143 PS turbo diesel, lent to me, is available up to £1,100 less than the former model. Of course, aside from the persuasive new price, the design of the new Ibiza FR has been fully updated in accordance with SEAT’s latest styling direction. Under the stewardship of new Head of Design, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, the Ibiza takes on many of the details which will be a hallmark of SEAT design in the coming years. As a result, the newborn Ibiza shows off reshaped headlights that now include sculptural elements inside the clusters similar to the new Alhambra MPV and the recently-revised Exeo. Specifying optional bixenon headlights also adds LED daytime running lights for an even more vibrant appearance.
• Max. torque (lb/ft): 236 at 1750 rpm • CO2: 123 g/km • Price: £16,840 on the road and semi-circular elements have been replaced with distinctive lines, and the FR gains LED tail lights for an even more characteristic light signature. The rear bumpers have been changed, too, with strong contours tracing the rear ‘diffuser’ section. Inside, contemporary typography on the instrument dials and a rejuvenated climate control display make things clearer on the brand new Ibiza. Finally even the glovebox has been enlarged, with appreciably more storage and the addition of an interior light. SEAT celebrated record sales in the UK in 2011 and, if the impressive 2012 Ibiza FR is anything to go by, it looks set to continue that success for years to come.
Elsewhere, the front grille is smaller and front fog lights take on a rectangular shape and, at the front, the altered bonnet features a strong central crease line – a key design cue taken from the Spanish motor maker’s concept cars. At the back, the Ibiza’s tail lights have been redesigned. Curved Please mention “The Hythe Handbook” when responding to adverts

DIY for beginners
Drilling Holes
Removal Company
It’s often tricky to get a strip of baton onto a wall where you need to drill holes in the wall to match the ones in the wood. The easy solution is to hold the predrilled strip of wood against the wall and to drill corresponding holes in the wall using a small masonry drill. When you remove the wood from the wall you can see exactly where you need to drill the holes for the wall plugs.
Customer friendly with over 30 years experience
• Local, National and European removals carried out • No move is too large or too small. • Both short and long-term storage available.

Gain Momentum in Life, Achieve your goals Now! It has been something which I have felt strongly about for a long time - how I achieve my goals! Anyone who knows me will say that I’m a pretty motivated person, a bit more motivated than most. In this article I will discuss strategies which have helped me “get going” on numerous occasions. I will tell you the simple ways in which I have gone from feeling like I can’t do a thing to feeling like there is nothing I can’t do! I have experienced my fair share of being “in and out” of health and fitness; I have been really fit and I have been really unfit. I have been a student, a multiple business owner, had two full time jobs at the same time I am now a husband and a dad, all in the last 10 years. Being consistent in exercise when your life is not consistent is a challenge. Through this time I have let the ‘grass grow’ under my feet so many times it makes me mad. But I have learned something about myself… Three years ago I had a “holiday photo” moment, you know… the one where you thought you were walking around the pool on holiday looking… ok… then you get home and see the photos, the ones where you were not paying attention to holding your belly in and BOOM… the truth hit me…my body was in bad shape, I wasn’t aware it was this bad, I had been kidding myself. As I write this I can confidently say that I’m on a good roll at the minute and am in the shape of my life… again! I will commit to continuing the good times and reducing the bad, stopping this boom and bust and getting consistent…

a consistent life will let you have consistent health and fitness (I say to myself). Starting Back Whatever you say about exercise, and intense boot camp style exercise, if you have not done any for a while its goanna hurt! Starting back or starting for the first time is the single most difficult thing to do. Why? Mentally it’s very off putting as you refer to your previous negative experiences and memories of starting back, and they have all invariably failed after much pain and discomfort. Now with that thought in mind how does a nice gentle walk sound or a ten minute workout? A bit easier, yes. If you set your goals when you start back at a really low level and give yourself more time to reach it. For example, I would never go out for a run when I was unfit (like some people do); I always go out for a walk and do some running while I was out. It’s a different mind-set; I would usually end up running half the time and walking half the time, after 3 months of this, 3 times a week I was a lot fitter. Get Organised! Most of us would like to ensure that what we have worked hard for all of our lives, that at least some of it will pass on to those that we love and cherish. To make sure this happens, we have to be proactive and ensure that our affairs are in order. There are many different Trusts available, each achieving something a little different. The most commonly used Trust in a Will for a couple or co-owners of a property is a Property Protective Trust (PPT). What does this do? It gives the survivor the right to live in the house for the remainder of their lives but with the deceased’s share held in trust for the children (or other beneficiaries) when the survivor eventually dies. This trust does not restrict the rights of the survivor to sell or move home, but the deceased’s share always remains protected. If the survivor were to remarry, cohabit or require residential care, the protected share is ring fenced from those ‘outside influences’, whilst ensuring that the survivor is provided for. A Lasting Power of Attorney is the document that shows who you have chosen to make decisions on your behalf if you become mentally or physically incapacitated through illness or an accident. Unfortunately there are things in our lives that we have no control over and without an LPA in place the courts and social services can take control of your life, cause misery, frustration, intrusion and a great deal of expense for your family. With a properly thought out Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney in place it can ensure that at a time when your family is going through the trauma and grief of either your illness, accident or departure from this world, your foresight has at least made that path a little easier. A Beginner’s Guide to Pest Control
Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first. For instance, the cabbagewhite butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of garlic in warm water, leave P46
for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective. If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with old-fashioned moth balls although the effects don’t last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers. For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your
local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends. Happy hunting!
