Editors Letter Hello Everyone, Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook; we’ve got lots of details this edition about exciting local events coming up - including the Trawler Race in Folkestone, the 10th Anniversary of The Sandcastle Competition (in aid of a great cause, The Chuch Street Project) and the Hythe Venetian Fete; there’s plenty of time to get involved if you’re part of a local group or organisation. In the handbook, we also include a range of other articles about local news, charities and useful information - something for everyone we hope. And if there’s a particular item or subject you’d like to see in future editions of the handbook please do just let us know. If you’re involved in a local community event or sponsored activity, do get in touch in

plenty of time before the event so that we can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible. And if you run a local business, but don’t currently have your advert included in the handbook, why not give it a try? We’ve been producing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and our readers will always let you know where they’ve got your details from, so let us help get your phone ringing - just give us a call on 01303 266755 for a no obligation chat. Befriending with Age UK Hythe and Lyminge • A Good Day Call is a short call several times a week, at a time that suits you best, for an initial period of 8 weeks. This can provide a little reassurance when people most need it - for example, if an older person has experienced a recent bereavement or just come out of hospital.

Do you know an older person who is feeling lonely or isolated? Perhaps you know someone who is looking to become a volunteer? ‘Call in Time’ telephone befriending service and local befriending Not having someone to talk to regularly can be lonely and isolating, particularly if you’re used to sharing your home and time with others. Age UK Hythe and Lyminge can arrange for a local volunteer to

“befriend” you. Opportunities for this free service depend on the availability of volunteers. Whether you want to volunteer or be befriended please call 01303 269602 to discuss the scheme. Alternatively, a friendly chat on the phone can make all the difference. The national Age UK “Call In Time” telephone service comprises ‘Friendship Calls’ and ‘Good Day Calls’: • A Friendship Call is a weekly phone call (lasting normally around 20 minutes) from a trained and supported corporate volunteer.

To date, the service has supported over 500 people in a variety of different situations. We have received lots of positive feedback from those who have used the service about the benefits it brings to them. But don’t just take our word for it, hear from people who have tried it themselves such as Barbara, who suffered the loss of her daughter and husband, she said: ‘As time passes, I’m feeling much better, but I couldn’t have coped without the support I got from the Call in Time team.’ If you know someone who would benefit from taking part in the befriending service, or if you would like to volunteer, please call 01303 269602

An Exciting Year for FHODS at The Tower Theatre May, Dad’s Army in September, The Crucible in late October and Aladdin in December.

2017 will prove to be a very exciting year for FolkestoneHythe, Operatic & Dramatic Society at the Tower Theatre, as it will be the 10th Anniversary of the freshly converted Tower Theatre’s opening performance. Ten years ago the opening production was Oliver! and to mark this FHODS will be presenting Oliver! again this summer. This production will be part of a grand package of shows and other events marking this special anniversary. This includes Jesus Christ Superstar in April, Ladies in Lavender in

FHODS pantomime Cinderella proved to be an absolute success both financially, with the biggest Tower Theatre audiences to date, and artistically. Theatre Manager Peter Heselden says, “We have never had such a success, we have been inundated with thank you’s and expressions of gratitude. It is always a pleasure to receive applause but even more so when you are swamped by it. I think it is our turn to thank all those who came along, schools, Brownies, care homes and our loyal audience for playing their part in making Cinderella such a memorable show. The last couple of years have seen local schools coming to the shows, during term time, and this is definitely

something we hope to build on. Indeed, we already have some bookings for our schools’ matinee performances. This year, in December, we shall be presenting Aladdin. Another much loved pantomime. Aladdin promises to be full of magic, colour and good old-fashioned fun. The Tower Theatre has yet to announce the full cast, as there are a number of auditions to take place. School parties and other groups can book now and tickets are on sale from 1st March. For further information about Aladdin and other Tower Theatre Shows please contact the Box Office on 01303 223925 or the website www.towertheatrefolkestone.co.uk

Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: My cat’s belly and legs are almost bald but I can’t find a cause. What might it be? Cats are meticulous groomers, but this behaviour may become obsessive and lead to overgrooming, which can cause the baldness you mention. This obsessive behaviour can be triggered by stress or things like an allergic reaction. Diagnosing what is to blame can be difficult, and is based on ruling out known causes. It is good to start with a trip to the vet for an examination and possible allergy tests.

Q: My dog seems prone to diarrhoea. What are the causes? Unfortunately, there are many causes of diarrhoea in pets. Acute (short term) diarrhoea is usually triggered by a change in diet or by eating something unsuitable.

Treat it with plenty of water and easy to digest food such as chicken and rice. It should clear up within 2- 3 days but if this does not happen or your dog becomes unwell you should go to the vet as it is possible there may be a more serious cause for the diarrhoea needing treatment, such as a protozoal or bacterial infection. Chronic diarrhoea (lasting several days) has many causes and should be investigated by a vet. Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

Local Fishing with Trevor Ellse Welcome to our regular column with local fisherman Trevor Ellse, bringing us local news about our fisheries, including sea updates at our local shore marks: It’s been a hard month or so around our region with frozen lakes, calm water and the high pressure dictating the weather for long periods. As a result, the fishing suffered with not many fish being reported. Course or sea Thankfully the good side of storm Doris and the low-pressure systems that preceded is that it did give some much need sport to local anglers. Sea fishing has been slow for the cod fishing with only a handful being caught; loads of whiting being the only consolation. Of late the plaice have seen a return with anglers getting multiple catches. Marks to head for include Dungeness and Denge Marsh beaches, the Redoubt to Littlestone Lifeboat Station; these

can produce good numbers of fish if you’re prepared to spend some time trying new marks. Trout Fishing Season We are now entering the trout fishing season; Powder Mill Reservoir near Broad Oak is probably the nearest, open from the 1st March. New stock has been introduced with over 600 good quality Rainbows. A six fish ticket is £30 and an evening after 2pm for 4 fish is £20. Bewl Water also opens on the 21st March for trout fishing with the controversial any method tactic also available. Eight fish ticket is £28 and a Junior Two fish ticket is £12. Nickolls Fishery has seen an upturn in sport recently with several 20lb carp being reported, most area are producing double figure commons and mirrors. The catch of the month so far goes to Jason Hole with a lovely mirror carp of 38lb, as seen in the photo. Welcome to East Kent Doula and to feel sure that there is support for both them and their birthing partners. Being a doula is not just about knowing everything about birth, but instead is about forming an important bond with a mum, allowing her to feel secure in her birthing environment and confident in both her antenatal and postnatal care - and this is what I hope to be able to give you.

Becoming a mother is one of the hardest yet most rewarding challenges that life can ever bring, and sometimes you might just need a little extra support. Working across areas of East Kent, I offer my birth and postnatal services to support mums-to-be and new mummies; with antenatal sessions, birth doula services, and postnatal care including breastfeeding support. I can be with you for as long or as little as you need to help you begin the amazing journey into motherhood.

As part of my re-training I completed a Diploma of Higher Education in Midwifery, Nursing and Health Studies, followed by Doula training and certification through Nurturing Birth, and finally I became a member of Doula UK and entered their mentoring scheme to become fully recognised, which I achieved for birth in September 2016 and postnatally in January 2017. I am also CRB checked and have completed a short paediatric first aid course. If you would like know more about what a doula is or the birth services and postnatal care packages that I offer, then please feel free to email me on hello@eastkentdoula.com

About me My name is Heidi and I am a mum to one beautiful son and a gorgeous daughter. I was lucky enough to have a student midwife with me throughout my first birth, which allowed me to have continuous care provided by just one person, including antenatal and postnatal visits alongside the birth itself. However, for mothersto-be this just isn’t usually the case. You hear so many stories of mums not knowing who their midwife is, or the midwife changing at the end of the shift during labour, and a lot of mothers can feel very alone with a lot of pressure on their partners to support them, and it is for this exact reason that I decided to re-train and become a doula. What I want is for women to feel empowered during birth; to understand how to achieve the birth that they desire, to see a continuous friendly and supportive face who will help to make that happen,

For 9 months, you support, nurture and protect them. Let me focus on you, whilst your focus is on them.

Email: hello@eastkentdoula.com to arrange a cup of tea to see how I can support you through pregnancy, birth and beyond.

London Marathon 2017 Once again I shall be running the London Marathon on 23rd April 2017 in aid of the Kent Association for the Blind (KAB). This will be my 17th official London Marathon in a row and to date I have raised over £68,000 for KAB and also over £6,000 for Cancer Research. It would be appreciated if anyone wishes to make a donation payable to the Kent Association for the Blind – they can send this to Ray Johnson, Church House, 136 Sandgate Road, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 2BN. It is also possible to donate online at www. justgiving.com/rayjohnson

Ray comments: “My 2016 Marathon time was once again an improved time on previous years at 4 hours 12 minutes. It was particularly hard going from as early as mile 15, but thankfully picked up shortly afterwards. “My best time was 3 hours, 23 minutes in 2002 and I am already in training for this year’s event. I know I can’t beat this time, but I am sure I can certainly raise more money for charity that encourages me tremendously. Just the other day I completed a training run of 23 miles from Sandgate Hill to Bonnington church and back. Already I am on my way having raised over £1,500 so far for this year’s race.”

QBH Solutions

Friendly, simple and easy to understand HR & Compliance Support. Recruitment & Selection or finding and keeping new staff is an essential skill in helping your business to grow effectively and efficiently. People are the most important resource within your business and you will want to find and keep the right people for it. Not just in terms of qualifications and experience but also attitude, conduct and performance. The cost of poor recruitment, selection and HR solutions can run from hundreds of pounds into thousands of pounds. When you reflect on the time & cost associated with advertising, reviewing CV’s, interviewing, induction, training, developing and coaching new employees it makes complete business sense to have effective processes and strategies in place to ensure your business gets the right people. We have put together the following recruitment & selection strategies to provide additional HR support for small businesses; • Really understand and define the role you are recruiting for, what skills, experience and personal attributes are right for the role and your business. Define these within the Job Description. Do not forget to include Salary Scale, Place of Work and Hours of Work • How and where are you posting your job adverts. Are you using a recruitment agency, a job board website, local press? Really sell your business and don’t forget to advertise internally too. • Do a brief review of the applicants CV and Application Form against the Job Description, highlight anything that matches what you are looking for then complete a more thorough review, that way you are not wasting time on the applicants that are not suitable for the role. It is always excellent practise to have a strong idea of the personality and ability type of the applicant that you are looking for. P32

• In the interview always have a least two people, keep notes and compare them afterwards. Set tests, exams or role play during the interview, beware of the questions that you can & can’t ask. Don’t forget any special requirements specific to your industry (CRB / DBS etc) • Once you have selected the right person or people make sure you have a probationary or trial period for 3 to 6 months, clearly defined within the Contract of Employment. This gives both parties the opportunity to walk away with a reduced notice period. • Provide an effective induction, it doesn’t have to be to onerous or difficult but should cover as a minimum, H&S Issues, Fire & Emergency Plans and Evacuation Routes, Salary Payments, Other Staff Members, Breaks etc. • Once you have appointed the right person and they have started don’t forget to invest in them, train, coach, develop and support them. Supervisions or 1:1’s are a great tool to achieve this. For more information on implementing effective recruitment & selection strategies, HR Solutions in Folkestone, Kent and London, contact QBH Solutions Ltd today on info@qbhsolutions.co.uk or call us on 07795 564089

5 care tips for your crowning glory scalp. Using a good quality yet gentle anti dandruff shampoo like loreals sensi balance will help sooth your irritated scalp yet smooth your hair at the same time.

The cold winter weather and changeable spring weather can play havoc with our hair and scalp causing dryness and styling issues caused by the blustery winds. It is important to us to educate you and our clients on the ways you can help prevent excess damage to your hair. We have put our heads together in Saffron hair and recommend the following five tips.

• Wear a hat or scarf to help protect your hair from the harsh wintery weather. Carry a little can of your favourite loreal hair spray and a comb to get rid of that unwanted hair. • Treat your hair and your scalp to a deep conditioning treatment/mask once a week such as loreal pro-fiber. The cold winter air mixed with central heating causes hair to become dry and brittle. A treatment/mask will help replenish and moisturise. • Harsh winter conditions can also cause a dry and flakey

• Due to increased static and dryness causing flyaway hairs, we tend to over use our heated styling equipment hoping this will control the wildness! We all know that hot styling tools cause damage to our hair so try to limit the use of them unless you really need to. It’s always worth investing in a good quality heat protection product such as Loreals Nutrifier Glycerol-coco oil blow dry cream. This protects your hair up to heats of 230 degrees. • Last but not least, make sure you visit your favourite salon at least every 6-8 weeks for a regular trim and help to prevent Split ends. Split ends can’t be repaired but a regular trim will help prevent them.

We make your business, everyone’s business!

How do I advertise in the handbooks? Arranging for your advert to be included within the handbook is simple. Simply call us on 01303 266755 to book your space. Then, if you have a print ready advert, email it to us at info@eastkenthandbooks.com

Don’t have a print ready advert? No problem, email us your logo (if you have one) and the wording you’d like to include, and our graphic designer will put an advert together for you to use in the handbooks. He does a great job, and it’s free if you are advertising for more than 1 edition (which is how most people book, as your phone calls will increase as people get used to seeing your advert within the handbooks).

Why advertise within the handbooks? We’ve been publishing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and most of our advertisers have their advert included in every edition; why? Because it works - having their advert in the handbooks gets their telephones ringing.

We deliver the handbooks directly through the door of the local community. That means, when our readers are looking for a product or service, your phone number is right there in front of them, in their home. People like things to be straight forward, so if they’re looking for a company to do some work for them, they’ll be very likely to call the phone number they have already in front of them - particularly because our readers know, like and trust the handbooks. By association, they feel the same way about the company’s that advertise with us. Some of the feedback we get from our readers includes: “I wanted to call and say how useful the handbook is. It’s an excellent read and I know that I can feel confident using any of the advertisers in it” “We’ve just moved to the area and have found the handbook so useful - really pleased we’ve got it through the door” “Thank you for your recent article on jobs around the home - I was able to tick a number of things off my to do list using the companies you recommended.” And from our advertisers: “I have been advertising in the handbooks for a long while now, and would like to confirm I get more calls from it than I ever did from my newspaper advertising. I think it’s because people keep the handbooks in their homes, whereas the newspapers get recycled. Whatever it is, it’s working - please keep my advert running” “The handbook has been marvellous for our business; some of our best customers have come from there”

How do I get in touch?

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but nobody else does.” - Stuart H. Britt
