Editors Letter Hello Everyone, Welcome to the Spring edition of the handbook; isn’t it lovely to see some sunshine, and a bit of colour on the trees after the winter months? This edition we hear from Hythe Community Cinema, who offer a lovely evening out with the film showings at the Tin Tabernacle (opposite Oakland’s Doctors Surgery). We also hear from the Hythe Brasserie with their recipe suggestion for you, and from Restoring Health, who can deal with any aches and pains you may have. Our thanks to Andrea Stoneman of Shepherd Hut Studios for allowing us to use her very lovely illustration of the local area for the front cover. Do pop into the studio in Marine Walk Street (opposite Hythe town hall)
and see her work; it makes an ideal gift – whether for yourself or someone else! Thank you to everyone who has been in touch about community events and sponsored activities they are taking part in this year. If you’ve got something planned yourself, please do get in touch and we can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible. If you run a local business and don’t currently have your advert included in the handbook, we’d love to hear from you. We’ve been producing the handbook for over 10 years now, and our readers will always let you know where they’ve got your details from, so why not let us help get your phone ringing? With very best wishes until next time,
Tuija

Hythe Community Cinema
Hythe Community Cinema is a rapidly growing and very friendly film club which shows a wide variety of intriguing films.
a type of cake which featured in the film and which we gave as a prize in a free draw for ticket holders. For the Indian film The Lunchbox, we offered samosas and bhajis provided by the nearby Indian restaurant Southern Spice.
For our 2016 season we have moved to the beautifully renovated Tin Tabernacle, a small Victorian chapel converted into a community space. We have applied successfully to the British Film Institute for a substantial equipment grant which will mean that the picture and sound quality of the films we show are of a high standard.
The Hythe Community Cinema is run by a committee of film enthusiasts. The committee is elected at the AGM which takes place each summer.
We show 10 films a year between October and July. Our aim is to screen films from around the world and to promote the enjoyment of and education in the craft of film making. We show a range of British and international films, both recent releases and more classic films, focusing on the work of independent film directors. We hope that our film club is a valuable community resource for a town that has little in the way of evening entertainment. Where we can, we forge links with local businesses and shops. For instance, holders of a Hythe Cinema Card can buy advance tickets for our film evenings from Temptations Gift Shop. For our screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel, the patisserie La Salamandre supplied us with P4
Films are selected by a subgroup of the committee. We are always open to suggestions from members for films to be shown. At the end of each film, members give feedback on their enjoyment of it. Their feedback is analysed and we use it to guide us in the selection of subsequent films. If you would like to join the committee of the Hythe Community Cinema to help guide the future of the cinema, select films, etc, please let us know.
Forthcoming films Tuesday 7th June 2016: When I Saw You
In 1967, Tarek has to flee with his mother from Palestine to Jordan. He has difficulties adjusting to life in a refugee camp and leaves to look for his father. He embarks on a journey that changes his life forever.

Please also let us know if you would like to help in other ways without joining the committee, for instance by helping prepare refreshments, taking entrance money or delivering leaflets. Seasonal Recipe by Hythe Brasserie
Wholemeal Soda Bread This is a traditional Irish bread recipe, also known as “wheaten” bread. No need for rising as this one is yeast free. We serve it in the Brasserie and many of our customers ask how we make it! So here’s the secret.
Method: Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl, make a well and stir in the buttermilk until you have a rough dough, with the dry ingredients well mixed in. Do not knead as this makes the bread tough. Divide the mix into 2 parts and place on buttered
Makes 2 loaves
baking trays, forming into round shapes. Cut
Ingredients:
a cross on the top of each. Alternatively,
12 oz (300g) coarse wholemeal flour 8 oz (200g) plain white flour 2 heaped teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 2 heaped teaspoons sugar (any type) 1 heaped teaspoon of salt 1 pint (500ml) buttermilk
place the mix into buttered 1lb loaf tins. Bake for 30-35 minutes at 190 degrees C or Gas mark 4. Tip: Add some pumpkin and sunflower seeds for texture and fibre.

opened Harbour Arm, along with many other projects.
Within the handbook, we do like to hear positive news about the area, and about local businesses making a success for themselves, which in turn helps to support the local area.
Offering a broad range of atchitectural and surveying services, they have become a major player in the building-led regeneration in Folkestone, with forth-coming projects including the renovation of the Radnor Park Lodge, which will become a food outlet for the local college, involvement in the world leading skate park on the site of the former bingo hall, alongside The Cube building, in Tontine Street, and the Technical Consultants for the Folkestone Triennial 2017.
With Martello’s whole business founded on the belief that they could make a real difference in their home town, we would like to congratulate them on their impressive work to date, and look forward to watching their continued success in the future.
One such business is Martello Building Consultancy, based in the Creative Quarter in Folkestone. Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: Is it true that all dogs should now be microchipped?
Yes, from 6th April 2016 the government is introducing legislation that requires all dogs in England to be microchipped. Of course, many dogs are already microchipped but those that are not will now need to be done. A microchip is about as big as a grain of rice and it is put in a dog’s scruff using a needle, a bit like having an injection. When your dog is microchipped it is also registered on a database so that if your dog is ever found your details can be found, and you can be contacted with your dog’s whereabouts. At our clinic we are always very relieved when a stray or lost animal comes in with a microchip and we can quickly reunite them with their owners!
Q: We are going on holiday soon
and are thinking of putting our cats in a cattery. Are there other options, and how should we choose one?
There are lots of good catteries in the area. It is best to visit a few, and also ask friends and neighbours which catteries they would recommend. Lots of catteries have different types of accommodation available- some have outside runs, some have larger luxurious indoor areas and some now even have web cams so that you can view your cat whilst you are away! Another good option is a housesitter, who will come and live in your house and look after your pets there. There are lots of companies offering house sitter services. The only down side in our experience is coming home to very spoilt and demanding cats that have had a great time with the house sitter! Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

Auto-Biographies New Mini Cooper S Clubman Auto
The old Mini Clubman was no oil-painting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker alright. The brand new Mini Clubman must have been breast fed at birth, because it’s far bigger than its siblings. That doesn’t mean it’s fat – no way. This car is well formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman, though. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t help sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting. But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged ‘clubdoor’, has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two ‘normal’ back doors. They make it far easier for passengers to get in and out of the car. Then there’s the barn-door boot. You’ll remember that from the last model. Well, that stays put, but now the doors can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin. To be frank, with a big load area too, the word ‘mini’ seems rather outmoded. The whole motor is 270mm longer than the five-door Hatchback, allowing for oodles of room in the front and respectable space for two adults in the rear. The boot is about the same as a VW Golf’s, so you’ll get the family shopping in – and a toddler’s buggy. P16
The Cooper S Clubman Auto is easily the most gratifying to drive. Out at the Mini’s media launch on the roads surrounding San Sebastian in northern Spain, the most powerful petrol drove go-kartlike on the straights - just as a Mini should. It’s a shame the slightly pulpy suspension can drizzle on your chips in the corners, with body roll kicking in if you enter the twisty bits too hard. But that can be forgiven, because the Cooper S generates more than enough pull to keep you cheery. 189bhp can be squeezed from the S’ 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder lump, and with the eight speed auto box, a zero to 62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds is easily achievable, finishing up with a top speed of 142mph. Even though these figures might make the car sound insatiable for fuel – it’s not. With the superb automatic gearbox you can officially get an average of 48.7mpg out of the Clubman - and the CO2 emissions are 134g/km, meaning road tax is a trifling £130 per annum. The state-of-the-art 2015 Mini is a gargantuan step-up from its forerunner, and it puts right pretty much everything that was awry. The Clubman now has more doors, better space, good looks, and it really is exciting to drive. The Cooper S version is especially guaranteed to bring a grin to the face of anyone who slips behind its wheel. PROS ‘N’ CONS • Pleasurable √ • Eye-catching √ • Roomy √ • Real-world √ • Some body-roll X FAST FACTS • Max speed: 142 mph • 0-62 mph: 7.1 secs • Combined mpg: 48.7 • Engine: 1998cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo petrol • Max. power (bhp): 189 • Max. torque (lb/ft): 221 • CO2: 134 g/km • Price: £24,455 on the road

Plant of the month Snowdrop
The first sight of a snowdrop is always such a treat. With their delicate drooping heads, rich green leaves and stems, they burst their way into the garden with a quiet vigour that brightens up even the gloomiest of corners.
Snowdrops come in a variety of shapes and sizes but whichever type has bloomed you’ll be sure to identify it as a Snowdrop. Pick a few stems and pop the posy into an egg cup ‘vase’ - you’ll enjoy a beautiful sweet scent like honey in the room. They enjoy a well-drained spot in light shade similar to their natural woodland habitat.

Aunty Polly
Dear Aunty Polly I have been with my partner for 17 years and he has never bought me anything really nice or personal for Christmas. This year, has just about finished me off, he bought me saucepans. Not only did he buy me saucepans, but, they came as a graduated set and he separated them and wrapped them individually. I tried to hide my disappointment but it was awfully hard. But, that isn’t the end of it, when I took the rubbish out to the wheelie bin, I discovered a large new saucepan with a dent on it. I asked him about it, and it turns out he bought a discounted set because they were dented and threw the damaged one in the bin. He didn’t even care enough to cover it up. My sisters get lovely presents, rings, necklaces, earrings or clothes, I try very hard never to compare, but, I think this is the final straw for me. TP Dear TP What a thoughtless chap. I can imagine how disappointing it is. But, as he has been getting away with it for 17 years, it will be pretty hard to teach him new tricks. He sounds like a right scrooge! How about giving him a list of the things you would like, be specific on what you want. Perhaps he struggles to be imaginative? Alternatively, buy your own present, wrap it and put it under the tree and write the tag from him, do this for your birthday and every Christmas until he gets the idea……..Enjoy spending his money! All the best pet! Dear Aunty Polly I am devastated, my girlfriend and I spent New Year’s Eve at my parents’ house, everyone had been drinking, I went to the
kitchen to get another beer and I found my girlfriend kissing my dad, his hand was up the front of her jumper. I left the kitchen before they saw me, I felt like I had been in a car accident, I was shaking from head to toe. I don’t know what to, I love my girl, I love my dad and my poor mum would be heartbroken if she knew. DC Dear DC What a great shame, I’m so sorry that this has happened……. Seeing your dad behaving like that with anyone, let alone your girlfriend, would be an enormous shock. When it’s your own parents, it’s hard to believe that they could do anything so sleazy. An event like this changes the world. I think you should talk to your dad about what you saw. I think you should distance yourself from your girlfriend, as you certainly deserve better. I don’t know if your dad can ever make the world right for you again, I hope he can. All the best Pet. Dear Aunty Polly I am jealous of my sister, everyone likes her and everyone thinks she is clever, everything comes so easily to her, sometimes I think I hate her. The worst of it is that she always tries to make me feel better about being me. LE Dear LE I can imagine how galling it is to feel that you are living with someone who seems like the perfect princess – but, be quite assured you don’t know what lies ahead for her. Life can give with the one hand and take with the other. The fact that you own your jealousy shows me that you are very honest about yourself. But, perhaps you are also, rather harsh, comparing your strengths or weaknesses against anyone is sure to lead to you finding yourself wanting. Why go there? Embrace yourself, love yourself and you will find that these feelings you harbour against her will vanish. All the best pet xx

A Tale Of Ale: Shepherd Neame
Faversham, Kent, has a history of brewing from the 12th century, with ales being produced by monks. For the 14th century it is well-documented that the brewing of ales, certainly in Faversham, was carried out by women, known as ‘ale wives’. Shepherd Neame is recognised as Britain’s oldest brewer and has won numerous awards. Richard Marsh purchased the brewery in 1698 and the Shepherd family came into the operation during 1732. In 1864 Percy Beale Neame joined as a partner. Percy’s three children – Arthur, Alick and Harry were shareholders. Excellent ales continued to be produced and throughout the years of the second world war – albeit with a very much depleted number of staff. Robert (Bobby) Neame joined the company and became chairman. Bobby held this position for 35 years. Bishop’s Finger (strong ale, initially brewed in 1958) and Spitfire (named to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle of Britain,
P32
with Spitfire being the legendary aeroplane of that time) are classic ales and extremely popular. India Pale Ale is a strong, hoppy beer, with splendid character. The high hop rate in IPA was originally to protect the beer during its arduous journey across continents. Double Stout is a classic ale. Having a rich taste and a velvet-like texture, the palate is rewarded with smooth, burnt flavours. Indeed, very worthy of being named a masterpiece. Brilliant Ale came about from an original 19th century recipe, unearthed in archives. This bright and hoppy, impressive production, is reported as being inspired by the vision of early morning sun sending golden shafts of light through the brewhouse window. If Barley Wine is for you, seek out the Shepherd Neame & Sigtuna production. This limited edition Barley Wine, brewed in collaboration with Sigtuna Brygghus of Sweden, is oak-aged in Bourbon barrels – quite exceptional! These are just a few of the ales in a most excellent range from Shepherd Neame. It is also very much worthwhile locating the carveries, restaurants, new-look bars and accommodation the company has to offer. Tours and tasting events are available, too.

Ride it your way – Pilgrims Cycle Challenge It’s back! The 7th annual Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday 1 May 2016. The Cycle Challenge is the biggest event in Pilgrims Hospices calendar, with supporters old and new getting involved each year. This year’s challenge offers four routes, with something for every level of ability. Set yourself a personal challenge, cycle in memory of someone, have a day out with your colleagues, even compete against other local businesses or tackle part of the route as a relay team and make it a joint team effort? Everyone can take part. Climb on your saddle to explore the beautiful Kent countryside starting from any of the hospices in Canterbury, Thanet and Ashford.
■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Deborah Kellond, Community Fundraising Manager for Pilgrims said: “Last year’s cycle challenge saw an exceptional 1200 take part, raising an amazing £75,000 for Pilgrims Hospices. “Registration remains at £25, we try and keep registration as law as possible for our supporters, while covering the costs of the event. Therefore we would encourage as many of you as possible to take our challenge to the next level by raising sponsorship for completing this testing tour. “Every mile pedalled will make a huge difference to the lives of our patients and their families.” “Our events are run by our in-house team with support from wonderful volunteers and very generous sponsors, we keep costs to a minimum ensuring all money raised goes where it’s needed the most.”

Halcyon Days Loose weight in your lunch break at Halcyon Days, Hythe.
You can literally have a treatment during your lunch break and go straight back to work.
LipoSculpt are proud to announce the launch of their new Laser Lipolysis Machine; this innovative product will revolutionize the Laser Liposculpture market, it is the only machine on the market which offers a Dual Frequency, Twelve Paddle system with an incredible 136 laser diodes, meaning shorter treatment times as more than one area can be treated at a time. The science is the same and works on the same system that has made Laser Lipoloysis the most revolutionary fat busting and inch loss system ever made.
Our tests have shown up to an astonishing size loss of 16 inches over a course of eight to ten treatments, that’s at least two dress sizes smaller, how’s that for a special treat before you go on holiday, get married or any other function where you want to look and feel good, in fact how about doing it just for you to get back the bikini body you haven’t seen for a while presented back to you in a month!!!!
The LipoSculpt machine is the result of months of product development and testing and now we are ready to prove just how amazing all of our hard work has proved to be.
What is Laser Lipolysis?
The LipoSculpt machine is completely noninvasive, completely painless with absolutely no surgical procedure, therefore, no recovery time and more importantly no health risk.
Even after the first treatment you can expect an inch loss of between 1” – 5” that means you start looking and feeling fabulous immediately. Laser Lipolysis or Liposculpture is a new, safe form of laser liposuction that can really change your body, almost instantly. LipoSculpt uses a mild low laser (or cold laser) treatment to reduce your body’s fat. It is not cosmetic surgery. It’s non-invasive: there are no needles or injections.
