Editors Letter Hello Everyone, Welcome to the Summer edition of the handbook; if you’ve got children on school holidays, we hope you’re having a great time and the weather is being kind to you! We’ve included a ‘What’s On’ section particularly focused on some of the local activities aimed at children this summer – we were pleasantly surprised by some of the exciting opportunities and are looking forward to going along to them ourselves! This edition we also hear from Saffron Hair, who along with Alison Chapman of Owlets in Hythe, have been awarded Kent Women in Business awards - fantastic! We also hear from Nicholas Easthope of Easthope Stained Glass Studios, Folkestone, about the 2 day workshops he is offering during which you can design, create and bring home your very own stained glass light-catcher. A master of his craft, and a jolly nice man, this is a fantastic and unique workshop to attend.
We also include a range of other articles about local news, charities and useful information – something for everyone we hope. If there is a particular item you’d like to see in future edition of the handbook please do just let us know. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch about community events and sponsored activities they are taking part in this year. If you’ve got something planned yourself, please do get in touch and we can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible. If you run a local business and don’t currently have your advert included in the handbook, we’d love to hear from you. We’ve been producing the handbook for over 10 years now, and our readers will always let you know where they’ve got your details from, so why not let us help get your phone ringing?
With very best wishes until next time,

Save Princes Parade In 2012 Shepway District Council started employing consultants to look at developing the land they own at Princes Parade. At that time they were looking at a new leisure centre, a new Seabrook primary school and some housing. On 28 May 2014 Shepway’s cabinet passed a resolution that there would be a maximum of 36 houses on the site. On 13 April 2016 land use maps were presented to cabinet that showed at least 150 new homes, a leisure centre and the diversion of the existing road away from the seafront. (The school has now been ruled out). Cabinet passed a resolution that a planning application would be prepared on the basis of these diagrams – the previous resolution about 36 houses seemingly ignored. Shepway tried to exclude the public from this meeting on the basis that a third party – later revealed to be Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club – was involved. The site is currently designated partly for recreational use and mainly as open space. These designations are under review as part of Shepway’s local plan process. The relevant public consultation for this stage of the Local Plan is P4
due to open in October and Shepway has been telling members of the public that they can submit their views about Princes Parade as part of that process. However, given that they are due to present the planning application to Cabinet in November it is hard to see how any comments can be taken into account. There is huge public opposition to the proposals but the council isn’t listening. Save Princes Parade believes that this unique open space should remain undeveloped for the benefit of local people, visitors to the area and wildlife. The canal is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and development on Princes Parade will harm its setting as well as changing the character of the open seafront for ever. We also have concerns about contamination and the engineering challenges deriving from its previous
use as a land fill site. The land has long since greened over and we think the safest option would be to leave the waste undisturbed. We recognise the need for new homes and a new Hythe pool but there are alternative sites for these and we think Princes Parade is such a special site that its loss would not be balanced by the gain of a new leisure centre. If you would like to get involved in our campaign please look at our website www.saveprincesparade.org

Nick’s favourite job is always the one he’s currently working on. His portfolio includes churches, abbey, cathedrals, local schools, stately homes and private houses. “I love passing a building and knowing that I worked on it, helping make it more beautiful for future generations of visitors.” “To me, working on stained glass is about inheritance and legacy, preserving something precious for the future. I firmly believe that stained glass needs to be preserved, conserved and restored properly.”

Seasonal Recipe by Hythe Brasserie
Lemon and Green Peppercorn Chicken A nice simple dish with rustic flavours which can be pre prepared and cooked with very little attention. Great for entertaining or even Valentine’s day dinner, just make sure there are some strawberries and Champagne as well!
Serves 4 Marinade: 4 tablespoons of runny honey 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard 3 cloves crushed garlic 3 teaspoons green peppercorns, lightly crushed with the back of a spoon Juice and zest of 2 lemons For the chicken: 4 chicken breasts, preferably with the bone in as they stay moist. 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 1 sliced lemon Small bag of baby potatoes Salt and pepper Method: Combine the marinade ingredients and pour over the chicken in a bowl and leave in the fridge for 2 hours Heat the oven to 200C (Gas 6) Bring the potatoes to the boil (whole and skin on), drain
Place the sliced lemon, rosemary sprigs and potatoes at the bottom of a roasting tin Place the chicken and marinade on top, adding salt and pepper to taste Roast for 30-40 minutes or until chicken and potatoes are cooked Remove from the oven and rest for 10 minutes, covered in foil Serve with some steamed greens or some fresh salad leaves Tips: The marinaded chicken works really well on the Barbeque for a summer dish and you can use cracked black pepper instead of crushing the green ones if you prefer.

Visit The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway this Summer
For the past 88 years the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway has been an integral part of the landscape of Hythe and the Romney Marsh. Known as “Kent’s Mainline in Miniature”, our World Famous one-third full size Steam & Diesel locomotives have powered their way along the 13½ miles of track from the Cinque Port town of Hythe, terminating in Dungeness; a National Nature Reserve and one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world. With 4 stations in between, all within walking

distance of a beach, our railway provides you with an opportunity to explore our local area in a unique way. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic Lighthouses are all on our doorstep. Why not make a day of it and take advantage of the great range of cafe’s and restaurants along the line - at Hythe you have a choice between the Hythe Light Railway Cafe, which serves good quality food, and an all-day breakfast, or the Hythe Light Railway Vintage Tearoom for a real slice of nostalgia, and a delicious menu including traditional cream teas. As you go along the line, there is also the Heywood Buffet at New
Romney Station, a traditional railway cafe (and with the Model Railway Exhibition upstairs). And finally, as you reach Dungeness Station, the brand new End Of The Line Restaurant awaits you. A contemporary light and airy space, serving speciality fish dishes using local fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, together with a selection of wines and beers to compliment your meal. Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: My female dog is going through another
false pregnancy. She is six years old and never been spayed. Should she have the operation to stop her anxiety every season?
Some female dogs get a false pregnancy after they have a season. This is associated with the very complicated hormonal cycle of the dog. The false pregnancy is not in itself a problem but it can, as you say, cause dogs to be very anxious and exhibit behaviours such as nest building when your dog may carry blankets or soft toys around the house. It can also occasionally lead to problems such as mastitis.
should sleep each day? My twelve year old female cat snoozes for at least 15 or so hours some days, including through the night (on my bed). Is this usual?
Cats are innately lazy animals. They will often sleep for long periods of time during the day and the night. As cats get older the amount of time they sleep does seem to increase. If the increased sleeping is associated with other signs such as decreased appetite, poor mobility or lack of interest when your cat is awake then there may be an underlying condition and you should take your cat to the vet. However, if she is bright and happy when she is awake then I would not worry. It sounds as if she enjoys sleeping on your bed - our two cats sleep on our bed every night and often take up far too much space! Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

It is a good idea for non-breeding female dogs to be spayed as this will not only stop false pregnancies but also prevent a life threatening infection of the uterus (pyometra) that is common in middle aged female dogs that have had several seasons without pregnancies. Maybe give your vet a ring to discuss this but getting your dog spayed sounds like a good idea.

Auto-Biographies All-New Fiat Tipo fitted kit tips the car back into the good books. All 2016 Fiat Tipo models receive six airbags, electric windows, DAB digital radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.
I have a soft spot for Fiat. Okay, I’m mean to be objective – but you always remember your first car, right? And mine was a Fiat Panda. There’s no logic involved here – it’s pure emotion – and so, for me, the Fiat brand is synonymous with 1988 and my glorious first days of true motoring independence. The same year I got that Panda, a new Fiat was unleashed – the Tipo. The five-door hatch was boxy but appealed to the media and the masses, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1989. Sadly, the adoration didn’t last and the Fiat Tipo went to the great scrapyard in the sky when it was replaced by the Fiat Bravo and Brava in ‘95. But Fiat may well have been listening to The Stone Roses at some point – particularly the track ‘I Am The Resurrection’. This title must have become stuck somewhere in the spirit of Fiat because here we are today with a brand new Fiat Tipo for 2016. Yes, the car is back from the dead and aims to replicate the early success of the former model. If truth be told, the Fiat Tipo is no stranger to being brought back to life – the moniker was first seen on cars over 100 years ago. And in 2016, Fiat is determined to keep the name going again by going down the Dacia-esque value-for-money route. The Italian automaker is blunt about its intentions: the all-new Fiat Tipo is a car without frills and, even though it’s more or less emulating Dacia’s marketing strategy, its real competitor is the likes of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Now, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the all-new Fiat Tipo is, in my opinion, better looking than the Czech-made car. This is due to its elegant nose design, and neater overall shape. The Fiat Tipo’s price begins from a remarkably low £12,995 on the road, which is bound to shake up the British motoring market. The fresh Fiat Tipo is hitting our shores in September in five-door hatchback and ‘Station Wagon’ (estate) guises. The body forms are indistinguishable from the rear doors forward and the outside of the Tipo really doesn’t ooze ‘budget’ by any means. It’s only when you step inside that the ‘no frills’ element kicks-in.
We tested the flagship ‘High’ trim version (equivalent to Fiat’s ‘Lounge’ spec) of the Fiat Tipo hatchback at its launch in Turin. Equipment at this level includes sat-nav with TomTom LIVE services, climate control, a rear view camera and 17-inch alloy wheels - pushing the price-tag up to £17,995. The car we drove came with Fiat’s wellknown 120hp 1.6-litre Multijet II diesel power unit - but the range also offers the choice of a 1.3-litre oil-burner and 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines. Behind the wheel, it’s evident that the all-new Fiat Tipo has been put together so that it delivers comfort over everything else. Turin’s pot-hole ridden roads were a walk-in-the-park for the Tipo hatchback – its soft suspension enabling the car to sail over them without any discomposure in the cabin. Point the all-new Fiat Tipo’s nose into a corner rapidly, though, and body roll is perceptible. The well-weighted steering helps to make up for this slightly, but it still doesn’t make you feel as connected with the tarmac as you’d like to be. From a power point of view, the all-new Fiat Tipo’s 1.6-litre oil-burning unit is nothing exceptional, but the car’s six-speed manual transmission impresses with its positive-shift action. In lower gears lag is obvious and, while it’s a quiet cruiser, things become rowdy from 3,000rpm onwards. It tugs well, though, once that rev range is reached and is swift enough for the class of car. Its carbon dioxide emissions of 98g/km are just below the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, which in 1.6 TDI CR 115 SE Tech guise emits 99g/km of CO2. Pricing is similar - the Skoda being just £675 cheaper at £17,320. All things considered, the all-new Fiat Tipo is mediocre to drive and its cabin quality isn’t the best. But it does look good; it has bags of room; it’s comfortable and it comes loaded with kit. So even though 2016’s Fiat Tipo has a few negative points, it still represents good value for money. Some of the all-new Fiat Tipo’s switchgear is from the Fiat 500 range’s parts bin – as is the steering wheel. These components of the car feel good to the touch – it’s the plastics at knee-height on the doors and the dash that give the game away. The synthetic material is so cheap that it sounds hollow and scratches if you run your fingernails lightly over it. Lympne Castle - Did you know? Lympne Castle was built during the 13th century on the site of a Roman castle, Port Lemanis (locally called Stutfall Castle). The remains of this earlier castle can be seen below the hill on which Lympne Castle stands, having slipped down the hill over the years. Stones from the ruined castle were used to build an abbey and a church, (believed to be where Thomas à
The castle still has its ‘great hall’, wooden roof beams and gothic arched windows, helping to earn it Grade I listed status.
Becket once stayed) and it is these remains that were strengthened and extended to construct the new castle. During Tudor times the castle was rented as a farmhouse and was sold in 1860, after which it was left to decay. The castle was bought in 1905 by Sir Richard Lorimer and was restored. During the restoration the original buildings were extended and modern buildings were incorporated into the castle.
The castle was used during the Second World War as an observation post. If you are interested in arranging a group tour of the castle, a group lunch, or another event, please call 01303 261666.

After a fabulous first year in business Hythe’s latest premier hair salon, Saffron Hair, have managed to scoop a gold award in the prestigious Kent Health and Beauty Awards 2016. It goes to show that even in times when opening a new business is a gamble, with the right business plan and support behind you it will work. Owner of Saffron Hair, Theresa Holt, said “We are totally amazed to have been
awarded the gold award for Kent Hairdresser of the year 2016. Knowing how many salons we have in Hythe alone let alone the whole of Kent shows how many other stylists are worthy of this award. Saffron hair was nominated by a regular client in our salon the amazing Alison chapman from Owlets who recently received Kent Businesswoman of the year 2016.” Theresa goes on to say “We were also recognised with a bronze award for Kent Salon of the year and a bronze for Kent Start Up Health and Beauty Business”.
Kent H&BA said “We feel it’s important to encourage growth and development and so have designed a way, with the Kent Health & Beauty Awards, to bring together some of Kent’s shining stars and to create a really positive buzz around the health and beauty sector as a whole.”

Home and Away : Staying Connected
I know – it can be a ‘jungle’, out there. With so many choices of technology, it is no surprise that confusion accompanies apprehension. Mobile Broadband enables users to access the internet from virtually anywhere. I searched for companies whose products are easy to use, reliable, attractive and above all, have the features available, which I require. GoTab provides an excellent range of products. If a lot of time is spent out and about, then something that is lightweight, with a good battery life, makes sense. I found the GoTab GBT6 (touchscreen) enables me to perform the functions I require – i.e. browsing online, plus sending and receiving emails. GoTab easily fits in a pocket or handbag and I find it perfect as a travelling companion and also for use at home. A built in VGA camera, MP3 music player and other functions, are easily mastered. Weighing only 230g, this GoTab has all I require and more. www.my-go.co 3G/4G Wireless Routers are used when no Wi-Fi is available – so tablets and iPads, etc, can be activated when out and about. I found P32
TP-Link UK Ltd, to be a very knowledgeable company, with many items to satisfy situations. I identified a TP-Link Wireless Router, approximately the size of two matchboxes, as the item to make my tablet usable, when awayor indeed, at home- if Wi-Fi is not available, for whatever reason. It is easily made functional with a 3G dongle/card. www.tp-link.com If away from home and no mains supply is available to charge your device, do not panic! The answer is to hand from Free B Gadgets Ltd. This talented company has, within their range, external power banks for digital products, including energy sticks, boxes, bars and in-car chargers. Free B Gadgets are robust and reliable, small, neat and restore life to tablets and iPads etc., should a flat battery, on your device, be experienced. www.freebgadgets.com It’s as easy as that! So, staying connected is not a problem, anymore. Top Tip: Don’t buy something with functions you do not need – unless they are built in, free of charge. As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Visit The Fifth Trust
In this series, we look at the work of The Fifth Trust; a charity based near Canterbury, which supports people with learning difficulties. Formed in 1990, the Fifth Trust has grown steadily. Today, their Centre provides facilities on two sites in the Elham Valley for well over 100 students, half of whom live locally in residential homes associated with the Trust. We hear from Nikki Marley, manager at The Fifth Trust: “Our mission is to provide a safe and fulfilling way of life for adults with learning difficulties in East Kent, coaching each individual to achieve their potential. Through enjoyable and productive work, both in the local community and in our Garden Centre, Café and many craft, media and horticultural activities, our students develop life skills as well as the confidence to make personal choices about their own lives. Every day, we challenge ourselves and our students to do and be the best that we can.” Within the grounds of The Elham Valley Vineyard, where the work of The Fifth Trust takes place, they have P34
both a tearoom and garden centre, which they would very much like you to visit:

Vineyard Garden Centre
In the Café, students are working in a fully-functioning catering establishment, both in the kitchen and ‘frontof-house’. This provides them with the experience of working with the expectations and pressures found in any other food retail outlet. Students working in the Café will assist in the preparation and cooking of the dishes on our recently–introduced new menu. All work is undertaken under the supervision of our experienced catering instructors, in line with food hygiene legislation. Students also learn how to wait on tables. This interaction with customers helps to develop interpersonal skills and confidence. Some students work the cash till, helping them to develop money skills. All students exercise their personal choices and are involved in decision making at the shop. We’d love to see you. Don’t forget that every penny you spend in the Café, whether it’s on food from our new menu, our own label wine and jars of jams and pickles, or craft items created by our students, all goes towards the work we do. To make a booking, call us on (01227) 831266
On weekdays, our students work in the garden centre alongside an instructor, getting involved with all the daily jobs that need to be done: potting, pricing, labelling plants, watering, stock control, serving customers, handling money and tidying up. To find out more about opportunities for students, for members of public who want to volunteer, this week’s special offers on plants and compost, or how to get sawn logs delivered to your shed, please pop in and visit us. We’d love to see you. Don’t forget that every penny you spend in the Garden Centre, whether it’s on plants, compost, bedding, plant labels, garden implements, or craft items created by our students, all goes towards the work we do at the Fifth Trust. • Managing Menopause helping you manage any troublesome symptoms but also working together to help you set positive goals for this next, hopefully exciting, stage of your life. • Confidence at work and life goals (as a former Member of Parliament I can also offer experienced support for women in leadership roles and career coaching at all levels) • Living better with chronic illness Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses light trance states to help to rectify problem emotions, thoughts and behaviours and set new, positive and helpful ones. We tailor a programme just for you, since everyone is unique, drawing on techniques for example from hypnotherapy, NLP, positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy.
You remain in control at ALL times. Tess worked in international charities, was an MP, had three children then suddenly acquired two rare autoimmune diseases and hit menopause. Cognitive Hypnotherapy gave her the tools to manage and even grow despite these new challenges. Now she wants to pass the benefits on to other women. She’d love to help you too! She holds the Hypnotherapy Practitioners Diploma (HPD), is a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy, registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and is a trained Confident Childbirth practitioner.
