FROM THE

Staff CHRISTAL BROMLEY Community Manager

RESIDENTS REDUCING RISK This year, Las Sendas will be pursuing the Firewise USA® designation. This designation, given by the National Fire Prevention Association, certifies that a community has taken steps to reduce the risk of a wildfire in the community and minimize the impact of a fire in the event one starts. With the increase of wildfires near Las Sendas in the past few years, the Board prioritized the Firewise USA designation as one of its 2021 initiatives. Receiving the designation is a community effort; both the Association and individual residents are required to participate. First, Las Sendas will expend funds from the Association’s operating budget for fuel reduction in the common area. The Association is required to educate residents on fire risk mitigation. To accomplish this, a designated Firewise page has been created on the Association’s website. Plus, Las Sendas will host the Fire

Prevention and Mitigation Officer from the Department of Forestry and Fire Management to speak with residents about fire risk and mitigation steps on July 29 at 6 pm. Residents also need to take action to protect their personal property and log their activities. Earlier this year, I walked portions of the community with the Fire Prevention and Mitigation Officer who was completing the Risk Assessment of the common areas. While he was looking at the vegetation in the unmaintained areas, he stopped to point out the roof of a home. He explained that while the Association should perform fuel reduction, his larger concern was the amount of plant debris on the roof and gutter of the house, as well as on the combustible furniture under their patio. To learn more about what steps you can take to protect your property and help Las Sendas get Firewise, please visit us online at mylassendas.org/firewise.

This change will help our current neighbors and new residents alike to easily find our website and identify it with the name of our community. You’ll also notice more consistency across our online platforms, including our social media channels that now use the handle @mylassendas. This continuity aligns with digital marketing and communications best practices as well as our Communication Plan approved by the Board of Directors.

IMPORTANT SUMMER SAFETY Always Watch Kids Around Water The Las Sedas Community Association wants to remind everyone to help keep our families safe this summer. The warning is always worth repeating: keep an eye on children around water. Here are a few more water safety tips: 1 | Always watch kids when they are in or around water, and do not become distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time. 2 | Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. 3 | Make sure kids develop these water survival skills: be able to step or jump into water over their head; return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute; turn around in a full circle and find an exit; swim 25 yards; and exit the water. If in a pool, the child should be able to exit without using the ladder. 4 | Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates. 5 | Empty kids’ pools after each use. Store them upside down so they don’t collect water. | 6 Know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life.

Keep Pets Safe and Cool We at the Community Association care about our furry residents, too! Here are five quick tips for taking care of your pets during hot Arizona summers. 1 | WATER — Just as for humans, keeping your pets hydrated is essential. Be sure to keep water with you (and maybe a collapsible water bowl) when you are out and about with your pets.

2 | SHADE — Keep your pets out of the Arizona sun as much as possible to avoid sunburns and heat exhaustion. Staying in the shade is a great way to keep cool when you and your pets are outside. 3 | HAIRCUTS — If your pet’s hair is getting particularly long, it might be time for a visit to the groomers. Short fur, rather than a total shave, can help your pet to stay cool while still not exposing their skin to direct sunlight. 4 | CAR SAFETY — Never leave your pet in the car, EVER. Not even with the windows cracked open. In the heat of the summer, this is extremely dangerous and illegal in Arizona (see ARS § 132910). Keeping your pets safe is the law.

5 | PAW PROTECTION — Keep those feet cool by avoiding hot pavement and sticking to cooler areas for your walks. If you can’t avoid hot sidewalks, consider buying booties for their paws to prevent burning or blistering.

The interior of a car can reach 200 degrees in minutes! LAS SENDAS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION | mylassendas.org

BOARD BITS:

LAS SENDAS

Summer

Linda Barton | Secretary, Association Board of Directors

Summer is here in Arizona! Las Sendas provides so many opportunities for summer fun, including: • Two pools — one at Boulder Mountain Parke and one at the Trailhead • Splash Pad at Boulder Mountain Parke • Pickleball Courts at Boulder Mountain Parke • Tennis at both Boulder Mountain Parke and the Trailhead • Trails for hiking • Numerous opportunities for bicyclists • Six parks throughout the community (with brand new playground equipment at three of them) • Lifestyle events • Las Sendas Golf Course Hopefully you and your family will take full advantage of these amenities on our beautiful sunny days of summer. Our staff and the Board of Directors are constantly working to assure that the community, and all it has to offer, is in excellent condition. The Association is also very busy working to assure that Las Sendas continues to be a premier community here in Arizona. • CPAG (Community Planning Advisory Group) surveyed the community and held seven focus groups involving 56 residents to solicit input on how to increase the usage of the Trailhead. The valuable time of so many to provide thoughts and ideas was truly appreciated. • STRWG (Short Term Rental Working Group) continues to develop plans to bring a CC&R amendment to the community to address short term rentals to help protect the residential lifestyle of our community. All of our committees are meeting to work on a variety of issues and services to assure we have a quality lifestyle experience in our beautiful community. Residents throughout Las Sendas give generously of their time to address the above two issues plus:

• • • • •

Communications Safety and Security Landscape Architectural Review Finance and Audit

While all of this has been happening, our CCMC staff and contractors have been updating our enclave vehicle gates system, installing new mailboxes, and updating the control system for all of our amenities. CCMC and your Board of Directors are committed to making Las Sendas the Valley of the Sun’s most desired community. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who help us to reach this vision.

SEEKING APPLICANTS The Audit Committee is seeking applicants for additional members. CPA or finance experience is preferred. You can review the Committee Charter at mylassendas.org to learn more. Please contact cbromley@mylassendas.org if you’re interested.

TRAILHEAD

Repurpose Project

Alicia Goforth | Chair, Community Planning Advisory Group

The Community Planning Advisory Group (CPAG) has been hard at work on one project approved by the Board of Directors to further its mission “to provide lifestyle opportunities that offer the best amenities and most impactful social and fitness activities to promote meaningful connections.” To fulfill this mission, the Board asked CPAG to create a plan to repurpose or remodel the Trailhead Member’s Club (Trailhead). CPAG is made up of eight diverse residents who are passionate about enhancing our community and have dedicated numerous hours in furtherance of this objective. The scope of the project is to determine the best use of the Trailhead for the enjoyment of Las Sendas residents and create a space which will increase resident usage, be inclusive, and reflect Las Sendas' character.

Pursuant to the scope, CPAG will do the following: 1. Measure Historical and Current Use of the Trailhead 2. Research and Analyze Market Competitor Facilities 3. Research Trends in Lifestyle and its Effect in Residential Development 4. Measure and Analyze Resident Input 5. Develop a Community Plan 6. Create a Strategy Map 7. Present Plan to the Board

To date, CPAG has completed 1-4 (see box). Using data collected by CCMC regarding the use of the facility, we were able to measure how often and for what purpose the facility has been used in the recent past. The committee visited nine similar masterplanned communities and took note of the amenities offered at their community centers. Committee members also spoke with development and sales professionals at newly developed communities to understand what the current trends in lifestyle are and their effect on residential development. Additionally, a survey was conducted to seek an understanding of when, why, and how our residents use the space and the results from over 700 respondents were analyzed. Over 50 residents were divided into small groups and participated in seven focus group sessions for the committee to gain additional qualitative data on what residents would like to see at the Trailhead in the future. We are excited as we begin to develop a community plan and strategy map to ultimately make a recommendation to the Board.

MORGAN COLLINS Las Sendas lifestyle Director

Yoo-Hoo BIG SUMMER BLOWOUT! The Big Summer Blowout was exactly that — a BLOW OUT! More than 300 kids kicked off summer vacation by consuming countless snow cones, racing down giant slipn-slides, conquering a giant rock wall, and perfecting the perfect axe throw. A huge thank you to our sponsors Norris Air and The Williams and McBean Team — our events wouldn’t be possible without our incredible community partners. If you’re interested in sponsoring a future community event, please reach out to our Lifestyle Director Morgan Collins at mcollins@thetrailhead.org. As our first large event since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our Big Summer Blowout provided just a glimpse into our new and improved lifestyle program. Be on the lookout for new events being added to our calendar, old events being reintroduced and revamped, and more opportunities to connect with your neighbors.

SAVE THE DATE ... and your stuff! Our Community Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 2. Enclave gates will be open from 7 am to 1 pm. $2 will get your address put on the official Las Sendas Garage Sale Map, though registration is not required to participate. If no one in your enclave registers, the gates will not be opened. This event will be in partnership with Las Sendas Elementary, Sunshine Acres, Kevnik Mortgage, and West USA Realty. At the Trailhead from 12 to 3 pm Sunshine Acres will set up a donation drop-off site for items that did not sell, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the school. Also at the Trailhead, there will be a shredding truck where residents can drop off documents. Stay tuned for more information online at mylassendas.org

I wish they would have

TAUGHT ME THIS IN SCHOOL… Nowadays, the word “adult” has been commandeered as a verb, most commonly used as “adulting.” When you buy new tires for your car, you’re adulting. When you cook a meal from scratch rather than ordering takeout or tossing a frozen pizza in the oven, you’re adulting. Paying your bills on time? Getting a loan? Remembering to drink water? Adulting. Most of us weren’t taught how to “adult” — we were just thrown into the real world and forced to figure it out as we go. With this in mind, we are launching a brand-new summer program to help fill in those gaps: Adulting 101. Each session will focus on different skills that is needed to survive in the real world, including interview skills, resume building, budgeting, insurance, etc. Keep an eye on our online community calendar at mylassendas.org/calendar so you don’t miss out on learning how to adult!

SUMMER ACTIVITIES Keep your kids engaged and entertained this summer with our summer camps and activities at the Trailhead! Kids can push themselves to their limit at the Fear Factor Competition with Deb’s Dragons or explore fundamental STEM concepts and Pokémon Engineering through play at the LEGO Play-Well Camp. Or if you have teenagers at home looking to make some extra cash babysitting, sign them up for our Child and Babysitting Safety Course on July 17 to become child- and infant-CPR certified and learn necessary First Aid procedures.

SUMMER

Support Systems Between balancing meal planning, your fitness routine, and practicing healthy habits with your upcoming summer plans, developing a support system can be highly beneficial to both your physical and mental health. A strong support system should include someone to reach out to for information, advice, guidance, or just to listen instead of talk. By developing supportive relationships, you can find daily encouragement, a partner to lean on, and someone to celebrate all of your victories. Consider these tips for building and sustaining a healthy support system this summer: • Get clear on your goals. Having clear health goals with objectives and action steps will help determine what type, or what level of support, is necessary. Look for support from a mentor with a particular expertise related to what you need guidance with, or a partner that may have already run the race you are currently running. Ultimately, a clear understanding of your goals, and the action steps needed to move forward, will help identify the specific support needed so you can go out and find it! • Talk to me, your health coach! It’s important for me, as your coach, to pay it forward with helpful tips and insights as you continue to progress through the various stages of your health journey. It’s also important to remember that not everyone moves at the same pace. As your coach, I love offering guidance and support, especially when a client needs to reset goals and outline a new plan with achievable action steps. • Reach out to family and friends. Your loved ones are also an excellent resource for encouragement. Sustain this support network by keeping in touch and updating them with your progress along the way. Sharing with your loved ones can also help increase your success as you work toward your goals because you can try to work toward similar goals together! Building connections and having a support system this summer will be vital to staying on track and making progress with all your healthy lifestyle goals. Please reach out to me, your health coach, before summer gets into full swing. I am here to support and help YOU as you work towards optimal health. Jamie Palmisano is a certified health coach who studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York.

Summer

Sweets!

It seems like summertime and sweets go hand in hand ‚ but no worries, you can stick to your healthy living goals and still enjoy some refreshing sweet treats! Below are a few favorites from the trainers and instructors at the Las Sendas Spa and Fitness Center. Spa & Fitness Director Gina Gluvna loves the Strawberry Smoothie Bowl from LectinFree Kitchen. Just blend: • 10 frozen strawberries • 1 cup frozen rasberries • A dash of coconut milk • 1 scoop vanillia protein powder • A dash of goat milk yogurt For a slightly different take, Aqua/Yoga Instructor Jackie Zimmerman enjoys the Strawberry Limeade. There are several easy recipes online, but Jackie suggests replacing sugar with fresh apple juice to naturally sweeten it, or try some fresh ginger to spice it up!

Health Coach Margie Clegg loves watermelon:

It's delicious, low calorie, and full of vitamins and water! Personal Trainer Mark Swartz says his go-to crunchy treat is raw almonds,, and sweet treat is Medjool dates — plus sun brewed iced tea!

THE

Lunchtime Facelift

A radiofrequency facelift (also called a radiofrequency facial) is an aesthetic treatment that is almost as highly demanded as Botox. This popularity is thanks to the great results it achieves in facial tightening and body remodeling, without needles or a scalpel. The procedure is renowned for its skin tightening, which leaves clients noticing a very visible difference after the radiofrequency facelift treatment. The treatment uses a technology that stimulates the synthesis of collagen by providing a great intensity of heat in the deeper layers of the skin. During a radiofrequency facelift, the production of collagen and elastin helps to “rearrange” the face that has lost smoothness, while tightening wrinkled, parched and flaccid skin.

Results you can expect from a radiofrequency facial: • • • • • •

Additional advantages to the radiofrequency facelift: • Safe for all skin tones: Radio frequency technology is proven to be safe and effective for all skin tones. However, it is not recommended for clients with a pacemaker.

Firmer skin Skin tightening Neck and jowl tightening Reduced nasolabial grooves Raises drooping eyelids Blurs and smoothens expression lines (e.g. fine wrinkles and crow’s feet)

Radiofrequency can also be used to treat other areas, such as: Abdomen | Thigh | Buttocks | Knees | Arms

• Extremely comfortable: The advanced technology used increases

patient comfort. This anti-aging facial feels like a hot stone massage for the face.

• No downtime or side-effects: Enjoy a relaxing, comfortable treatment with no downtime. This treatment has the nickname “lunchtime facelift” because after a session the client can return to a normal daily routine, unlike the effects associated with anesthesia.

Combine radiofrequency with micro-needling When radiofrequency is combined with micro-needling you will enjoy the benefits of traditional micro-needling, plus skin tightening and additional collagen and elastin production. The radiofrequency energy delivered deep into the skin produces faster, more dramatic results over traditional micro-needling alone.

TAKE THE

During the Covid shut down I was able to get a great workout in my backyard pool — being in the water is an excellent way to get a run in and a weightlifting session, and to improve flexibility. This is why one of my favorite classes to teach is water fitness. The buoyancy of water reduces the “weight” of a person by about 90%, which means that the stress on weightbearing joints, bones, and muscles is similarly reduced. But don’t get the idea that just because it doesn’t hurt, you can’t get a great workout. Water exercise can encompass all of the components of fitness — cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. And, when done regularly, water exercise can help reduce body fat. • Aerobic workouts in the pool are perfect for those who find certain movements on land — running, kicking, leaping, and even dancing — too jarring or painful. Keep in mind that in the water, heart rate will be reduced by as much as 17 beats per minute when compared to land exercise. That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to how you feel. • The resistance of water is perfect for a strength-training workout — instead of weights, the water itself provides the resistance. One of the easiest ways to create resistance is to cup your hands and push or pull the water away from you. Other devices, such as hand webbed gloves and water dumbbells, can increase the resistance to provide a more intense workout. • One of the greatest benefits of water exercise is its effect on flexibility. Water is a welcome environment for performing stretches that might otherwise be difficult on land. Because the effects of gravity are lessened, you can move your joints through a wider range of motion and achieve long-term flexibility. The pool is a fun place to feel like a kid again and get a great workout. In fact, instead of feeling out of breath or exhausted, you may feel surprisingly calm, yet energetic, following an aquatic exercise class. Even if you’re a dip-your-toe-in-the-water type of person, don’t be afraid to take the plunge into water fitness. Bev Crupi has been involved in fitness, training, and competition for over 20 years. Her certifications include American Council on Exercise, Aquatic Exercise Association, Ironman Certified Coach IMU, and RRCA Certified Running coach.

DON'T FORGET RECOVERY! Did you know that massage is an absolutely amazing way to boost muscle recovery and help prevent future injuries? COACHES CORNER: MARK SWARTZ C.S.C.S./NSCA-CPT

MORE THAN Just a Movement When performing athletic movements, or doing exercises, some body parts require mobility, and some require stability. Mobility is defined as the ability of a joint to move pain-free throughout its full range of motion (ROM). Stability can be defined as the ability of a joint to maintain a certain position while under a load or stress. The joints that have great mobility are the ankle, hip, thoracic spine, and shoulder. If we aren’t properly trained how to perform certain exercises, compensations can occur which takes away from achieving the desired effect. For example, when performing a tricep pushdown on a cable machine, if the shoulder isn’t stabilizing then we are more likely to compensate for the difficulty of the movement by creating momentum with the entire arm, taking away from the tricep isolation. Here are examples of some exercises that are more complex, and that require stability in some areas, and mobility in other areas (demonstrated by residents Ava and Karie).

The overhead squat requires great mobility in the ankle, hip, and shoulder, along with torso and shoulder stability.

The lunge hold with overhead dumbbell press needs hip and shoulder mobility, plus stability throughout the rest of the body. An alternating dumbbell bench press is great for developing shoulder strength and stability.

A bird dog hold demands mobility on the extended shoulder and hip, with pelvic/lumbar stability.

Splish, Splash ... Swim By Chris and Meg Zajdzinski | Owners, Mesa Aquatics Club

Mesa Aquatics Club (MAC) is a year-round swimming program providing classes and competitive opportunities for ages 3 years and above. We offer learn to swim classes, Splish and Splash classes for stroke development, and both recreational and competitive swim teams for swimmers ages 4 years through college age. In addition we have a year-round Masters program for adults. MAC runs our year-round programs out of the Kino and Skyline Aquatic Centers in Mesa, and seasonal programs at Las Sendas from March through November. We are passionate about children learning to swim and the sport of swimming. We believe that when you gift a child swimming lessons, you give them so much more! The opportunity to jump in the pool with friends, spend a day on the lake, or be comfortable in the ocean is just the beginning. Swimming teaches water safety, hard work, resilience, and listening skills. All of the MAC coaches work diligently to build what we call the MAC WAY — a team culture of sportsmanship, hard work, and having fun — "Honor the team. Honor yourself. Honor the process." We are incredibly fortunate to have coaches who are all amazing examples of what MAC is all about. They all

care deeply about helping the kids reach their potential as swimmers and develop the character that will lead to greater success in life. We look forward to seeing your kids pursue their goals and become the best versions of themselves, and we hope your experience with the team will benefit your family as much as it has ours.

Tree of Joy The Shadehoppers of Las Sendas is a small hiking group of four women who have lived in the community for many years. They have been decorating a tree on Hawes Trail throughout the pandemic to spread joy — they call it the Tree of Joy. Carol Mulcahy says that fellow hikers and bikers have voiced their appreciation to the group. "We decorate this tree to bring a smile to others," says Carol. GOOD BOOKS

Shared with Good Friends The Book Club is like the Energizer Bunny — it keeps going and going and going! The club was originally formed around 2000 by Janice Hourihan, a real estate agent who worked and lived in Las Sendas. Janice formed the group to help neighbors meet one another, especially those who were employed and could not join other afternoon clubs. The club was an instant success and has tripled in size since its inception! The Las Sendas Book Club is the perfect place to meet neighbors, make friends, and engage in lively conversation about the books we read. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month for a happy hour at 6 pm followed by our book-based discussion from 6:30 to 8 pm. In July and August, we will be meeting via Zoom to accommodate those that travel, and in September we will return to hosting our club at the Trailhead. Join us on July 13 as we discuss The Lost and Found Bookshop by Susan Wiggs, a perfect summer read! In this thought-provoking, wise, and emotionally rich novel, New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs explores the meaning of happiness, trust, and faith in oneself as she asks the question, “If you had to start over, what would you do and who would you be?” At our August 10 meeting, we will be discussing The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. This book tells the story of a woman in her mid-thirties who is filled with regrets of missed opportunities. She tries to end her life, but finds herself between life and death in a library that goes on forever — here, this woman has the opportunity to do things differently.

SCHOOL’S OUT! Prevent the Summer Slide By Dr. Jeanne Boiarsky

Summer brings a relaxed schedule, sleeping in, and swimming. Summer also brings the summer slide, that thing that happens when kids stop reading or practicing things learned during the school year. You're in luck — there are ways to prevent this! If you do nothing else, READ. Reading expert and researcher, Jim Trelease, states, “Students who read the most also read the best, achieve the most, and stay in school the longest.” Find a summer reading program. The Mesa Public Library has a reading program for kids, teens, and adults. I strongly recommend this one and encourage you to do the program with your child. When things are modeled, kids are more likely to participate. For example, my high school senior and I will be participating. It’ll be fun to compare who is farther along and reading more. Scholastic.com and Barnes and Noble are other places doing summer reading programs. What’s fun about these is that there are prizes involved. Who doesn’t love a prize? I can’t stress enough the importance of reading. Do it daily. FUN LEARNING IDEA: My family researched places we’d like to visit. We created PowerPoint presentations and shared them with each other.

Reading Program

PRIZES!

As mentioned above, Mesa Public Library has a summer reading program with prizes! The entire family can register and participate. Check out the great list below (all prizes and coupons are subject to availability while supplies last): • • • • •

Peter Piper personal pizza coupon (ages 0-11) Raising Canes lemonade coupon Rubio's kids meal coupon (ages 0-12) Arizona State Park Pass Free book

Grand Prize drawings • Legoland Discovery Center Family 4-Pack • Sea Life Aquarium Family 4-Pack • Harkins Theatres Family Prize Pack • Phoenix Zoo Prize Bundle

Other ideas for preventing the “slide” are things like life skill lessons. For example, cook/bake with your kids. Have a daily schedule with jobs included. Kids find comfort in a schedule. Have family game night (my family loves Uno.) My last suggestion is a passion project. Let your kids pick topics they are passionate about. They research, create something, and present to the family. My family researched places we’d like to visit. We created PowerPoint presentations and shared them with each other. We then chose one to visit! The summer slide can be prevented. With a schedule, reading activities, and other creative ventures, your child can stay engaged all summer long! Dr. Jeanne Boiarsky, a 30-year teacher, is the Gifted and Talented teacher at Las Sendas Elementary School. She lives in the Las Sendas community with her husband Dave and daughter Hailey.

HOME

DONNA & JOHN TRACY Sonoran Hills | Diamond Point model

When John and Donna Tracy decided to update their Las Sendas home, even they didn’t realize how much it would change their entire living environment. “It started as a simple kitchen re-model,“ says Donna. “And somehow grew to include almost every room in the house.” Perhaps the most dramatic change was the addition of double islands in the newly designed kitchen, each with their own sink and filtered water. “We use one for cooking and the other for family and guests to gather around,” laughs Donna. “Because nobody ever seems to want to leave the kitchen.” Upon eliminating the original half wall separating the kitchen from the living room, they were able to open up the living space with clean lines and a neutral pallet transforming a traditional southwestern design into a modern masterpiece. They eliminated a never-used fireplace and created a state-of-the-art entertainment space in the living room with custom surround sound and a 60-inch LED fireplace display. Final touches include creation of a modern office space with two workstations, and more than a dozen new LED ceiling lights that make every room light and inviting. The carpet was replaced with luxury vinyl flooring, chosen for its softness and ease of cleaning. “We watched our home transform from a comfortable southwestern vacation house into a modern Arizona home as inspiring as our view of Red Mountain,” says Donna. “We’re thrilled every time we come home!”

IMPROMPTU Pool Party Often when planning a party, you may REALLY plan a party — custom napkins, decorations, and themed party favors. But sometimes parties just happen, especially in the summer, and there’s no time for extravagance. So create a nostress event, enjoy the company of family and great friends, and relax poolside — it’s easy. All you need are some basic pool party essentials: Set the scene. You don't have to get super-fancy to add some quick dazzle to your party. Place some inexpensive and easy to find items, like limes, in the middle of the table as a centerpiece. Try mason jars or assorted glass bottles filled with candles and tea lights, add fresh flowers if you have them. Do a quick run to the dollar store for balloons and paper lanterns. Light bites. For an impromptu get together, check your pantry — chips, dip, nuts, and crackers are easy and fuss-free. If you have time for a quick grocery run, opt for snacks that can easily be covered or stored in coolers. Turkey and cheese pinwheels, mini sandwiches, and a colorful array of fruits are great options. Don’t forget dessert — everyone likes popsicles! Music. You want to create an atmosphere that is lively, fun and relaxing. Since variety is the spice of life, opt for a little pop, a little hip-hop and a some good ol’ rock-n-roll. Toys. Throw fun swim floats in the pool to create a festive atmosphere. They also make good Instagram shots, which is always a crowd pleaser. Drinks. It is important to stay hydrated so be sure to have plenty of water available. Try some flavored and/or sparkling waters to make it more interesting, and they are great mixers for your poolside cocktails! LAS SENDAS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION | mylassendas.org

Summer Happenings AT THE PATIO & GRILLE

With summer now upon us, we at the Patio at Las Sendas have begun to adapt to the change in weather. We have added some new misters to our patio, as well as more tables indoors for a cooler space for our guests. In the kitchen, we are in full swing with our new summer menu! We hope you will like the approach that we have taken, and enjoy some of the new dishes. With the summer heat in mind, we have put together a menu that is designed with fresh and local ingredients that are light and filling. Come try a mouthwatering watermelon and feta salad, a dish of succulent seared scallops with sweet creamed corn, or an imported meat and cheese Charcuturie board to get the whole meal started. The patio and grille is open all summer with a slight change of hours — we will open at 10 am Monday through Thursday and 7 am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Happy Hour is available from 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Thursday, and from 2 to 6 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday with signature cocktails and draft beers being featured. CHARACTER and a Little White Ball "Sports builds character.” That truism has been around for a very long time. Here at the Las Sendas Golf Course, the Junior Sticks program, led by LPGA Professional Tracy Berman, is doing exactly that. The goal of our junior golf program is not only to develop the fundamental skills of the golf swing, but also to teach each player the character traits that will make them champions in life; and most importantly, to create a love for the game. With eight-year-old Addie Ankert, the program obviously succeeded. How many eight-year-olds write books about golf? Addie did, and she has a photo to prove it. Addie loves golf, “because it can be challenging, and it is technical,” she says. She especially loves putting, which she describes as her favorite part of the game. We can’t wait to see where Addie’s golf journey takes her. Our programs teach the fundamentals of the game including full swing, short game, putting, golf course etiquette, rules of the game and on-course play. Our students range from five to fifteen years of age, so we group them them according to age, as well as gender and skill level. Several Junior Golf Sticks grads have gone on to golf scholarships and some have returned to teach the new youngsters. Both Kendall McBean and Nicole Ewing began with Junior Golf Sticks, then went on to the Las Sendas Ping Team and private lessons with the Las Sendas Golf Academy. It should not be a surprise that they rated in the top three on the Red Mountain High School Golf Team. They have been excellent coaches for the new Juniors. Many golf scholarships go unused every year. Kendall McBean took advantage of one for her post-secondary education. Now attending EmbryRiddle in Prescott, Arizona, on golf and academic scholarships, Kendall is currently number one on the golf team, which has a good chance of placing in the nationals. A great spokeswoman for golf, she says, “What I love about golf is, no matter if you’re having an off day or you’re playing lights out, you learn a lot about who you are and how to handle your emotions when you are on the course. You rely heavily on yourself and your own self-confidence because it is you who controls every decision out there.” We suspect that also applies to her studies in Forensic Biology.

She’s now at Rutgers University in New Jersey, majoring in Cell Biology and Neuroscience. She comments, “I love golf because it is a never-ending quest to get better. Every round leaves me with something I could improve on, and I love the challenge. It takes patience, and a lot of work, but you have to learn to trust the process.” Tracy Berman is so proud of these girls. “They are so well-rounded. Not only were they taught the golf swing, but they also learned valuable life skills. It just doesn’t get any better than this!” LEFT: Nicole Ewing, Red Mountain High School Student Athlete of the Year in 2019

Golf Academy While the Junior Sticks program continues to build character in the youth of our community, several additional golf programs are available for golfers of all ages. Whether you’re correcting a few flaws in your swing or completely overhauling your entire game, private golf instruction at the Las Sendas Golf Academy is the ideal way to realize your goals. Our ability to hone in on the key elements of your game, customize an instruction program suited for you and monitor your progress along the way lies at the heart of our successful golf instruction philosophy. With on-course playing lessons, you’ll not only learn the fundamentals of golf, but you’ll also learn how to play the game. It's a fact that golfers play differently when they are on the range versus on the course. Playing lessons with an LSGA instructor allows you to see live situations and provide the right instruction to help you play better and also strategically think through the round. The Las Sendas Golf Academy embraces a personalized, comprehensive set of programs, including golf school, Junior Sticks, group lessons for beginners and private groups.
