40 YEARS OF SERVICE This year, the Central Texas Food Bank is celebrating 40 years of serving our community. Since our founding in 1982, volunteers have been integral to our work. With support from thousands of people donating both their time and their money, we’ve gone from humble beginnings to distributing more than 64 million pounds of food. But last year was one of the hardest for our growing community to endure. The pandemic and winter storm put many families in situations they could never have imagined, and left thousands struggling. Like they have many times in the last 40 years, our donors and volunteers came together to help those in need. We’re especially grateful for all of the volunteers who have made our mission possible for the last four decades. Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month and thank you for helping us be there to weather any storm.

shley and I have been living in East Austin for 14 years now and working here for just over 18 years. We’ve frequented nearly every restaurant and have sadly seen some really good eateries come and go. Though we’ve indulged in some of the best, we have actually learned a lot from our readers this go round, and our creative team is here to pass on these hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems to you. This is the first time ever that we have published a readers' choice issue. And we are very excited to see some of our faves top this list, and we certainly agree with our savvy readers that there are even more places that are truly the best at what they do. East Austin residents know what they are talking about when it comes to dining choices. As any long time Eastsider will tell you, we honestly have some of the best food in Austin—if not in all of Texas. Throughout this issue, you will get to experience and almost taste for yourself— through captivating photography and descriptive writing—what readers have voted as some of the best in town. Then we narrowed it down to specific dishes that, after reading this feature, you will want to go sample these dishes for yourself. When you’re finished eating (or reading) your way through East Austin, tell us your thoughts on some of the best of your samplings. Tag us on the ‘gram (@eastsideatxmag) or shoot us an email as you fill your bellies with culinary goodness. We want to hear from you! Again, thanks to each of our readers who voted and to our readers who enjoy reading about this special community issue after issue. Also, thank you to all the talented chefs and culinary teams in town who have created just one more reason East Austin is one of the best places to love where we live! Enjoy, Will Bowling

Park It

Wide Open Spaces

WORDS BY

Christopher Ferguson, AIA

Over 80 years since its founding, Patterson Park continues to endear itself to generations of East Austinites.

T

wo flamingos stand nearly ten feet tall, their heart-shaped necks craned as they face each other, beaks touching. In the morning light, they almost appear like a mirage on the horizon, their bright red and pink ceramic plumage set off by an intricate mosaic of mirrored glass tiles that scatter sunlight in all directions. The ten-year-old installation is “Flamingo Mitote” by Stephanie Distefano, and it’s one of the finest examples of public art in Austin. It also

from adjacent traffic noise – a sunny, sensory respite.

It’s no accident that Patterson Park is the home of Austin’s most decorated shed. Supported by a tight-knit community of neighbors and the Austin Parks Foundation, the lush twenty acres of shared green space have been thoughtfully maintained and expanded since the park’s dedication in 1941 as part of a land acquisition for the Mueller airport.

Organized community events are ongoing and regularly feature holiday celebrations, volunteer opportunities, and fundraisers put on by Friends of Patterson Park (FoPP), a volunteer-driven group of park-loving neighbors and families who support local initiatives and park amenities.

Besides art, the park offers a mature community garden, a six-lane pool, tree-enclosed playgrounds, a baseball diamond and recreational fields, a sprawling tennis center, basketball and volleyball courts, and, naturally, a skate park (complete with a multi-height half-pipe). Bookended by quiet rows of Cherrywood homes and sitting opposite Mueller Lake Park, the land rests on a gentle slope, protecting much of the park

As the city continues to change rapidly, the character of its neighborhoods will continue to change, too. In this light, Patterson Park doesn’t just offer sublime places to play, swim, and roam. Mass Gallery

A Story of Resilience WORDS BY Tejal

Thakkar Despois

Mass Gallery is an art gallery owned by a group of artists and art lovers whose goal is simply to share good art and support local artists. Since its inception in 2006, the gallery’s resilience and ability to morph at each stage of its existence are its hallmark and what make it the Eastside staple that it is today. 12 EASTside | April/May2022

T

he gallery was founded by a group of UT art students who transformed a garage on the side of the Blue Theater complex into a thriving studio and gallery space. Jules Jones, gallery member, is proud of the fact that, though the gallery has “taken a lot of shapes, it’s always been an artist-run gallery.” Over the last 17 years, the gallery has changed locations several times, but the members have worked hard to keep the gallery alive. According to Jules, through the years, the gallery has remained on the Eastside because of the “blossoming art scene” and is now housed at 705 Gunter Street. The team is excited to unveil the revamped gallery at their re-opening scheduled for September. Due to a loss of funding during the pandemic, like so many other local ventures, the team had to get creative and decided to rent out their main gallery space as a studio and has been operating the showroom out of a smaller office space. As they prepare for the re-opening, Jules reflects on the gallery’s “unique way of curating, which has always been collaborative and democratic.” The gallerists’ process allows for brainstorming which often leads to new ideas and initiatives. Since many of the members are artists themselves, they understand the artistic perspective. Jules asserts that the main goal find more at eastsideatx.com

for Mass Gallery was never to sell art but rather to create “a project space, a space to exhibit artists’ work,” often supporting new artists and unique talent. Looking to the future, Jules says they are not sure “exactly what will happen, but we are really proud of everything we have done so far.” Reflecting on their journey, he reminisces about how they have not only hosted out of brick and mortar homes but have also had times where they have had more “nomadic operations,” like pop-ups. As the Mass team gears up to move back into the larger space, they are in the process of finding more members to join the family. Mass Gallery has a history of adapting to their conditions and making the best out of unique circumstances. Jules says that at the end of the day, the goal is to “follow through with our mission, which is to provide support for the arts. Sometimes that’s a space to show work, sometimes that’s small artist grants, sometimes that’s publishing a zine.” With their nimble team, the sky is the limit.

The Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller was first launched in 2012 by Carla Jenkins, who founded F2M Texas, the nonprofit responsible for operations. F2M Texas aims to host, educate, and support Central Texans who want to learn more about growing and participating in a sustainable food system.

A Sunday Tradition

Since opening, the Mueller market has seen immense growth in size and popularity. In June 2021, the market moved from its original location at the Browning Hangar to one of Mueller’s newest additions, the modern Branch Park Pavilion. This update has allowed guests, especially young families, to enjoy the open space and the nearby park and splash pad.

Shopping Small & Supporting Local

The indoor-outdoor market is carefully organized. Agricultural producers, including farmers and ranchers, are usually inside the pavilion, while vendors offering prepared food and snacks are outside along Philomena Street with local artisans who sell their specialty crafts. The Bastrop-based Chickamaw Farm & Ranch is just one of the beef vendors onsite. In fact, most agricultural producers at the market are located within a 150-mile radius confirming that when the products reach consumers, they are guaranteed fresh. Outside, visitors are greeted by intoxicating aromas of incredible cuisine from vendors like Ninja Pig, who offers locally-sourced pork and beef tucked inside handmade tortillas, and Tamale Addiction, who’s well-known for their organic, gluten-free tamales.

Market

Within the vibrant and diverse East Austin neighborhoods, there are countless ways to spend a successful Sunday funday with family and friends, or simply have some time alone while surveying and sampling local purveyors alongside like-minded Austinites.

T

exas Farmers’ Market hosts its weekly market at Branch Park Pavilion in the densely-packed, yet sprawling, Mueller neighborhood. On one side of the neighborhood, the grassy, outdoor beauty of Mueller Lake Park is hard to ignore. On the other, rowdy sports fans and their palpable energy can be heard for blocks. And right at the heart of the community is one of Austin’s most authentic outdoor marketplaces: Texas Farmers’ Market. The year-

14 EASTside | April/May2022

round, producer-only market consistently houses over 120 local vendors weekly, rain or shine.

Patrons also have plenty of fresh beverages to choose from throughout the market. In fact, they’re encouraged to sample products. Texas Keeper Cider, an Austin-made craft cider, keeps plenty of bottles nearby just for sampling. One of the more popular drink stands is CTRUS Organic Smashed Drinks, who sells the refreshing and social media-worthy lemon lime water. It’s no wonder that Texas Farmers’ Market is poised to continue growing. Whether you’re a seasoned shopper, or it’s your first time visiting, one thing is certain: no one is leaving empty-handed.

Running the gamut from newcomers to long-standing staples, from highly experiential fine dining establishments to food trucks that specialize in exquisitely prepared food for fast-moving people, this inspired collection of dishes captures the variety of East Austin’s unrivaled, diverse culinary scene. Grab a fork and knife and get ready to spoil your appetite!

VIXEN’S WEDDING

Chickpea Tamal Dishes crafted by chef Karsten Spieth employ the bold personality of Goan Indian flavors reinterpreted through a Texas lens. Such a unique ethos naturally produces a kaleidoscope of combinations such as the chickpea tamal surrounded by curry scented with mushrooms, apples, and yogurt. Ground legumes are formed into a masa cake that is reminiscent of what comes off a Mexican comal, and the flavors that infuse the sauce are very Texas with a nod to the textures of Indian cuisine. Follow up with grilled lamb complemented by mustard green saag and creamy clouds of paneer, and there is no shortage of big-as-Texas flavor. 1813 A E 6th St. vixensweddingatx.com

CANJE

Fish Tamarind This relatively new hotspot does an incredible job of exploring and interpreting the diverse cuisine found throughout the Caribbean, and part of that diversity includes fish. At Canje, fresh bass is transformed into a main course masterpiece that’s as flavorful as it is colorful. In the bowl, the fish swims in the middle of a small sea of creamy rum butter, with green mango and cilantro. Every bite is mild, yet plenty sweet. Its surprisingly firm texture encourages diners to savor the complex flavor profile, as they transport to a place where water is clear and the sun is bright. 1914 E 6th St. | canjeatx.com @canjeatx

TERRY’S SEAFOOD Chicken Tenders

Thanks to the familiarity of its bright blue exterior along Airport Boulevard, Terry’s Seafood & Chicken seems to be a modest addition to the drive along that thoroughfare. But the chicken tenders that are made fresh in-house everyday are anything but humble. Marinated with a blend of spices and then flash-fried for an impossibly crispy exterior, chicken tenders at Terry’s are perfectly crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Reliant on a recipe developed over a half-century of business, these tenders embody everything that is comforting about childhood, but they can be dressed up for adults with their vinegar-based hot sauce. Some nights this ultimate comfort food combination is just too good to pass up. 1805 Airport Blvd. | terrysseafood.com (512) 477-3237

BIRDIE’S

Olive Oil Soft Serve The ever-evolving menu at the elusive Birdie’s, one of East Austin’s newest additions to the culinary scene, is full of daily surprises. Fresh ingredients bring fresh ideas and new dishes every day at this quaint, family-run operation. One constant, however, is the soft serve gelato made in-house on the regular. Topped with Agrumato Blood Orange Olive Oil, the creamy soft serve is made even smoother by the rich, slightly sweet oil. No reservations are required at this modern, yet eclectic, Italian bistro. But be sure to get there early because lines often wrap the building. 2944 E 12th St., Unit A | birdiesaustin.com @birdiesaustin

NIXTA Beet Tartare Tostada The vibrant exterior of Nixta Taqueria is mirrored in the exquisite Beet Tartare Tostada. Though the name of this dish rightfully conjures up comparisons to tuna or beef tartare, this root veggie version deserves acclaim in its own right. The humble first, and arguably most important, layer of this dish is the crispy home-made tortilla bed. Dubbed ‘The Best Tortilla’ in EASTside’s taco issue, the magic of masa should be savored just as carefully as the beloved creamy avocado that comes next. And last, of course, is the grand finale of the finely chopped beet. Tender and bursting with sweet, earthy flavors, this unique preparation allows this oft overlooked vegetable to shine. 2512 E 12th St. | nixtataqueria.com @nixtataqueria eastsideatx.com

EAST SIDE KING

Pork Belly Meshi & Beet Home Fries Who said fries need to be made from potatoes? In an inspired move, East Side King bucked convention and chose to reimagine home fries for the modern era. To do so, they selected an oft-unloved root vegetable: beets. The first bite evokes a sweet flavor of the earth that is immediately brightened by the green onion garnish, all of which is blended together through the use of a Japanese mayonnaise dipping sauce. If a savory burst of flavor is insufficient, send taste buds into orbit with pork belly meshi. Roasted low and slow, this pork is paired with pungent kimchi and fresh vegetables before it is laid to rest on a bed of jasmine rice. One bite just won’t be enough. 1618 E 6th St. | eastsideking.com

THE VEGAN NOM

THE HALAL CORNER

Shawarma Arabi

Brunch Burrito

The Halal Corner offers plenty of the Mediterranean classics, like meat over rice plates and pita wraps, but when it comes to choosing an undeniably delicious, distinctive, and just-plain-filling meal, it’s best to go with the Shawarma Arabi platter. The plate is served with all the crucial ingredients: roasted chicken cooked to perfection, fries, garlic mayonnaise sauce, and warm pita bread. However, the dish doesn’t stop there – expect a side of hummus and tabbouleh, both fresh, exquisite flavors, that complement the seasoning-rich rice and meat.

Waking up is hard to do, and sometimes even the draw of breakfast tacos is not enough to get moving. But brunch never ends at this vegan taco truck. The Big Brunch Burrito is an oversized plant-protein dream. Hold the eggs of omnivorous breakfast tacos and sub a tofu scramble that is just as filling. Choose between the vegan chorizo, beef, or country breakfast sausage, which adds that familiar hearty texture required of a good burrito. Seasoned potatoes, creamy queso, and pico de gallo finish out this tasty veggie wrap.

BRUNCH BIRD Eggs Benny Some might think that brunch without bacon or sausage is for the birds. But at Brunch Bird, the philosophy revolves around bird food. Part of the Plow Burger family of vegan restaurants, this fully plant-based concept is located inside Buzz Mill on East 7th Street. Their take on Eggs Benedict is one menu stand out. Two thickly sliced pieces of sourdough pave the way for a dreamy brunch classic, though the star of this decadent vegan dish is the seemingly impossible runny ‘egg yolk’ that balances precariously atop the pillowy JUST Egg and slices of “bacon.” Though this combination may not be an exact visual match for the typical poached egg, the combination of fluffy ‘eggs’ and the creamy, flavorful yolk dripping golden, gooey goodness over the sides make for a substitute that stands on its own. Arugula and raw onion add a bit of bite, while a slice of tomato adds a sweet acidity. 1209 E 7th St. | brunchbird.com | @brunchbirdatx

1618 ASIAN FUSION

Filet Mignon Onion Stir Fry At this brilliant fusion restaurant, entrées are categorized into four groups: dishes from the garden, sky, ocean, and land. One entrée from the land, in particular, is a juicy, mouth-watering experience from beginning to end. The French-style Filet Mignon Onion Stir Fry is a flavorful, onion-heavy steak dish that’s balanced with a bowl of fluffy, steamed white rice and a fresh side salad. The tender steak is packed with flavor and comes covered in a tangy sauce that’s perfect for mixing with the sides, too. While 1618 Asian Fusion’s filet mignon may sound like a fancy, special-occasion meal, there’s no better reason to order than simple hunger.

Mussels PEI When it comes to seafood, Prince Edward Island Mussels are arguably some of the best. Sustainable and healthy, these versatile bivalves are delicious in a variety of dishes. At Hank’s, mussels are prepared in the Spanish escabeche-style and topped with chorizo. Hints of white wine and lemon perfectly complement the subtle flavors of the mussels themselves. Served with grilled sourdough, this dish is a perfect starter or main dish and is best enjoyed in the open air of Hank’s spacious patio. 5811 Berkman Dr. | hanksaustin.com @hanks.austin

INTERO RESTAURANT Burrata This made-to-order dairy delicacy begins with Stracciatella. Stracciatella, in this case, specifically references the ‘little shreds’ of mozzarella mixed with cream which is then wrapped in a mozzarella casing. Intero’s take on burrata is shouldered on a house-made walnut sourdough that lays the groundwork for this elegant open-faced sandwich. Made in-house with rye flour, molasses, and earthy, sweet walnuts, this bread is grilled and topped with Swiss chard tossed in a warm anchovy vinaigrette. Chef Ian Thurwatcher is not one to let anything go to waste. He saves the Swiss chard stems, which are pickled and sprinkled on top. This dish is substantial enough to serve as a main course and pairs well with a mineral-heavy white wine. 2612 E Cesar Chavez St. | interorestaurant.com

SUERTE

My Güey or the Highway These days, Suerte is a well-known luminary of modern Mexican cuisine in the city. They produce an authentic and delectable experience. This cocktail, one of Suerte's newest additions, is an alluring avocado leaf-infused, gin-based sip that features gran classico liqueur, dry vermouth, and pamplemousse, which is poured over a few grand ice cubes and garnished with an avocado leaf. It’s especially delicious paired with their well-known and popular Smoked Goat Barbacoa plate. The meat in this dish is neatly stowed away in a large steaming banana leaf and comes with a selection of spicy salsas and guacamole. Colorful pickled veggies add a contrasting depth of flavor and saltiness of the barbacoa. The basket of freshly homemade, aromatic corn tortillas and various salsas adds the finishing touch to the scrumptious meal.

RAMEN TATSU-YA Mi-So-Hot Ramen There is nothing bashful about Ramen Tatsu-ya’s signature ramen bowl, Mi-So-Hot. Bold both in flavor and in name, the spicy dish is warmth embodied. This Tonkotsu-style ramen features a rich pork bone broth mixed with a miso blend. Filling noodles are the star of the show, begging to be slurped, while garnishes of cabbage, scallions, and an ajitama egg add color to the bowl. This soulful Japanese dish certainly brings the heat, though for those with a milder palate, Mi-So-Not Ramen offers the same rich flavors in a less sweat-inducing bowl. 1600 E 6th St. | ramen-tatsuya.com | @ramentatsu_ya

GRIZZELDA’S Tostadas de Atun Tex-Mex restaurant Grizzelda’s offers a variety of coastal dishes, like ceviche and fish tacos, and the eatery proves you don’t have to travel far to satisfy coastal cravings. Their Tuna Tostadas work well as an appetizer or entrée, and they’re perfect for sharing—or not. On the plate, three crunchy tostadas serve as the foundation for the exquisite ingredients. On the bottom, fresh avocados are carefully topped with a generous amount of seared ahi tuna. The tostadas are then covered with a rich serrano crema. Not only do the tostadas melt in your mouth, but the pink tuna pops next to the bright green avocado making them colorful which matches their Instagramable atmosphere. 105 Tillery St. | grizzeldas.com | @grizzeldas

LAUNDERETTE Birthday Cake Ice Cream Sandwich

The jovial, jingly sounds of an ice cream truck is a siren song to kids who grew up under the piercing gaze of the relentless Texas sun. Indulge that basic childhood pleasure of ice cream with Launderette’s Birthday Cake Ice Cream sandwich, a frozen treat that should be thoroughly enjoyed any day of the year. This playful dish is rich, yet not overly sweet, though it should be devoured slowly to avoid brain freeze. JACOBY’S

Muskoka Smash The deep, sweet color of berries, ripe and heavy with sugary juice, is subdued only slightly in this gorgeous cocktail. The gradient of purple runs from lilac to royal in the Muskoka Smash and is topped off with a garnish of twisted lemon and berries that give this cocktail its distinctive color. Sitting out on the warm, rustic patio of Jacoby’s, outfitted with wood finishes and nature-inspired touches, rye whiskey, basil and freshly muddled blackberries combine for this refreshment. Tart, lemon juice cuts the sweetness of the berries and pulls out the oaky flavors of the rye. Named after the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, where Kris Swift, Creative Director of Jacoby’s Restaurant, spent summers, this recipe is pulled from childhood memories. The Muskoka Smash revives the feeling brought about by picking fresh berries and pockets laden with jewel-toned treasures as nature’s gift. This versatile drink pairs well with Jacoby’s famous burger, or for something more adventurous, the smoked jackfruit bowl offers a deliciously tangy, meatless barbecue option. 3235 E Cesar Chavez St. | jacobysaustin.com @jacobysatx

Much like conventional Argentine cuisine, Buenos Aires Café focuses heavily on quality meat-centric plates. The café’s Milanesa Sandwich is served on a thick hoagie roll that hugs the breaded beef cutlets after which this plate is named. The classic sandwich comes with tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise, with the option to add cheese, ham, and a fried egg. Served with a choice of fries or salad, this lunch plate makes for a special midday meal packed with flavor. DE NADA CANTINA Spicy Pineapple Cocktail Naturally, most diners might gravitate toward the standard margarita, but De Nada Cantina’s signature Spicy Pineapple cocktail is a fantastic reason to step outside the TexMex box. The spicy drink comes in a picture-perfect pineapple-shaped glass and is a flawless concoction of Oaxacan-sourced Producer Mezcal, Ancho Reyes Verde chile-flavored liqueur, fresh pineapple, and spicy lime juice. At the top of the drink, a homemade chamoy sauce carefully seeps to the bottom of the glass. The secret to just the right amount of picante? A sly drop of El Yucateco Chile Habanero Hot Sauce. Pair this specialty drink with De Nada’s renowned barbacoa tacos. The slow braised beef cheek is infused with just a touch of coffee, giving a unique flavor to this classic combo. 4715 E Cesar Chavez St. denadacantina.com | @denadacantina

ROSEWOOD CHOP HOUSE Wagyu Beef Parisa Succulent, simple, and bursting with flavor is Rosewood Gulf Coast Chop House’s Wagyu Beef Parisa. For those who’ve never heard of Parisa, this Hill Country specialty is most often compared to beef tartare though it’s a uniquely Texan take on a classic French dish. At Rosewood, a fine dining establishment that takes good food seriously, the decadence of Wagyu Beef isn’t enough. The bone marrow of this choice cut is used in place of the more typical lean beef and finely combined with an aged cheddar that adds a sharpness and hot sauce for a bit of kick. Served with lavash (a thin flatbread), this exquisite starter sets the tone for the epicurean experience of the main course. 1209 Rosewood Ave. | rosewoodatx.com | @rosewoodatx

Sweet Rolls The ritual of breaking bread is taken literally and seriously at Dō, aka The Tiny Bread Shed. Tucked away in Camp East, owner and chef Camila makes it a point to infuse her freshly made doughs with love, high-quality ingredients, and the earnest hope of forging community bonds. She’s taken special care to make sure everyone is able to indulge in her creations, though extra attention is paid to serving up traditional Puerto Rican flavors like pan sobao and sweet rolls slathered in rich, guava-infused cream cheese icing. Other morning goodies include classic cinnamon rolls that find the perfect balance between a lightweight texture wrapped in a thick layer of cinnamon-sugar goodness, as well as a rotating seasonal selection of unique flavor combos like Ube Coconut and Raspberry Lemon Rose. Dō proves that bread is truly a universal love language that can be enjoyed pretty much any time of the day.

Chicken Inasal

Filipino and Vietnamese cuisines collide at Fil N’ Viet. This marriage of flavors comes directly from the couple who owns this eatery. When Rosie and Kevin Truong wed, their lives fused, and one large portion of their lives that became one was meal time. Time spent in the home kitchen became a ballet between

Rosie’s much-missed family favorites like the sour-spicy-sweet Chicken Inasal and Kevin’s Vietnamese heritage — until they discovered that these South Asian cuisines had much in common. Thus the duo’s restaurant was born. The blended culinary heritages found their spiritual home in the Hamachi Kinilaw,

a Filipino-style ceviche made from amberjack that is dressed up with Thai chilies and crispy shallots before being delicately dressed in a coconut milk and sugar cane vinegar. A squeeze of burnt lime on top and a taste are all it takes for a Ferris wheel of flavors to tumble across taste buds.

MICRO-SCHOOL, MACRO-VISION

Great emphasis is placed on observing and listening to their students closely, helping identify their interests, challenges, learning styles, and strengths. Rifugio operates from the viewpoint that children are powerful individuals, with the ability to recognize and follow their interests and to develop their own ideas and concepts of reality. Ariana and Sofia believe it’s important to notice the moments that help kids feel autonomous and to recreate them.

A holistic environment where children guide their personal learning journey Rifugio Austin is a holistic project-based school currently serving students ages 4.5 to 7 years old. From inspiration and firsthand experience of the Rifugios in the Italian Alps, Ariana DiNielli wanted to build the same refuge and warmth that each Rifugio provided from the natural elements. Rifugio Austin is built upon that experience, and the school environment is that of a safe and nurturing space where children will feel at home. At Rifugio Austin, the educational foundation includes the simple belief that each child deserves to have their unique and individual needs fully met. By providing a stable, secure space, children will naturally explore, experiment, inquire, create, dream, believe, and do. The environment is inclusive, and children are respected as individuals who are unique and on their own learning journey. This is a fundamental belief that educators Ariana DiNielli and Sofia Gamba share deeply. The duo found that they share similar viewpoints on education, children, families and the way teachers can show up for students 30 EASTside | April/May2022

in the classroom throughout the educational process and in everyday life moments. With sincere interest in the development and the potential of the children in their classroom, Sofia and Ariana bring something special to early education. Rifugio cares deeply about the family unit, and the educators strongly believe in their role of supporting the wellbeing of individual students as a whole. Ariana and Sofia understand that they must continuously learn alongside their students, putting new concepts and ideas into practice and reintegrating these into their teaching approach on a consistent basis. It is a work of self-reflection, and it invites them to continuously grow as educators and people. They are in it with their students and support each other in the process of developing the lessons that become integrated into Rifugio’s curriculum. They implement self-regulation methods through meditation, art, movement, and wherever else they see that their students need support. find more at eastsideatx.com

The school has created an environment where mistakes are viewed as important learning moments, where there aren’t any judgments on behavior as being right or wrong, and where the spark and flame that each child carries are fueled through thought provoking projects. They encourage collaboration and applying the growth mindset, a core concept in their approach to learning. At Rifugio, teachers and students want to constantly question the ideas they hold and the world around them. This attitude of inquiry nurtures an environment of constant evolution, mutual respect, love, and civility and allows for students to believe in themselves, and in each other. Children are artists, inventors, creators, and intuitive beings who already have the answers within themselves.

Thinking Outside the Box

Did You Know? As part of their Open Door Initiative, every Sunday evening, Thinkery opens its exhibits to the neighborhood for Community Night. From 3-5pm, admission is free for all, though donations are accepted. Be sure to arrive early to ensure a fun afternoon, as capacity is limited.

A Childhood Paradise WORDS BY

Tejal Thakkar

Thinkery, with its iconic red building, is an Eastside favorite for families. The children’s museum (and school) offer a unique approach that prioritizes exploration and a hands-on learning experience for children.

T

hinkery has been an Austin staple for close to 40 years and housed in its ‘new’ location on the Eastside since 2013. The building is unmissable, a red cube that has become a landmark in the Mueller neighborhood. Thinkery, with its welcoming setting for kids and families, is a “museum and informal learning center dedicated to STEAM,” says Jeff Dellinger, Director of Marketing and Communications. The museum’s exhibits target kids aged 0-12 and offer a unique experience where children actively interact with the exhibits. Jeff explains that the goal is “learning by doing, experimenting, and building a sense of curiosity.” One of the exciting initiatives Thinkery unveiled during the pandemic is their Little Thinkers Preschool. The preschool opened in the fall of 2020 with two classrooms and has since expanded to four. The main aim for the preschool is to narrow the kindergarten readiness gap. According to Jeff, “only about 50% of Austin area kids are considered kindergarten ready when they reach that age.” Jeff adds that “the idea behind the preschool is to provide kids, much like with the museum experience, hands-on and inquiry-based activities.” In addition, Little Thinkers has a research partnership with the University of Texas in Austin. As part of this partnership, the University advises on the preschool curriculum, ensuring the class-

rooms are using best-in-class teaching methods. Then, the school provides “a proof of concept for some of those methodologies and research-based best practices” to then be shared with other preschools and organizations, with a goal to disseminate information in an effort to close that readiness gap across the city. As the preschool ramps up and COVID restrictions subside, Thinkery has many projects on the horizon. They will be opening a new exhibit in late May called “Notion of Motion.” Thinkery will also be hosting summer camps this year at their Meridith Learning Lab, and Jeff and the team are excited to be opening offsite camps for the first time post-COVID. Six weeks of summer camps will take place in Cedar Park at Reed Elementary. Heading into the find more at eastsideatx.com

fall, Jeff also alludes to a number of other exciting projects that will materialize and align with the organization’s strategic vision to “bring the Thinkery experience outside of the four walls of the museum. There is a lot of work being done to [bring] learning experiences into the broader community.”

A minimal lot with maximal views provides the perfect canvas for an art collector.

A steel balcony that doubles as a covered porch wraps two sides of the compact structure, which includes generous expanses of operable glass at its upper level that suggests a rich and colorful interior.

Prior to purchasing the property, which was an empty lot at the time, Todd negotiated with the seller to include condo restrictions that protect his second-story views. This allowed him to have unobstructed treetop views of downtown, so he made the unconventional decision to put the bedroom on the ground floor. This design decision afforded the views to the kitchen, dining, and living room above, where he spends most of his time. The building across the alley is also one-story and a protected landmark, so he has unobstructed views to the south and east—the Moonlight Towers and surrounding East Austin.

The home, designed by Austin-based Pavonetti Architecture, is deeply personal to homeowner Todd Piccus, an art collector and aesthete with an appreciation for industrial spaces.

A single run of stairs leads to the airy, daylight-filled central living space, meticulously planned to maximize the home’s small, yet comfortable, footprint. High ceilings and clerestory

Pavonetti Architecture, led by principal Shane Pavonetti, designs high-end bespoke and speculative projects at all scales.

The tight dimensions of the living room required the custom fabrication of two credenzas and banquette seating, among other bespoke elements. The home itself is poised and exactingly detailed, yet designed to be quietly upstaged by Todd’s sensitively curated collection of art and artifacts, including a custom commissioned neon sign by Evan Voyles, the chalkboard menu from Ruby’s BBQ (which shuttered in 2018), a hand-blown French glass chandelier commissioned through Bourgeois Boheme, and a front door fashioned to resemble the one greeting guests at Figure 8 Coffee on Chicon Street. With its unique combination of utility and whimsy, Todd’s home radiates with the personality of its patron and steward: an achievement that is ubiquitous to well-designed architecture, but not often achieved in contemporary residential design.

A Weekend In

Houston

More than a Bayou City WORDS BY Abby L. Johnson PHOTO Courtesy of Melissa Taylor

Though Austinites may be known for their fierce loyalty to the capital city, there’s more to this great state waiting outside city limits. The expansive (and nearby) city of Houston offers plenty in the way of culinary delights, cultural excursions, and worthwhile views.

Day One The approximately three-hour drive from Austin to Houston is dotted with charming small towns and quaint pit stops. Allow ample time for the drive because it is worthwhile to stop along the way at the many antiquing hubs, even if it’s only to window shop. First-time visitors will be surprised by the sheer size of Hous-

ton’s cityscape. After taking it all in, make your way into the epicenter of town and settle in for the stay. An easy choice is the newest luxury edition to the Space City: the boutique hotel, Blossom. Centrally located, Blossom is convenient for travelers who want to be in the heart of Houston and also experience an elevated hospitality experience. The gorgeous interiors give a nod to not only the

40 EASTside | April/May2022

hotel’s namesake with pops of pink and rich greens but also to the city’s deep roots in the aerospace industry with subtle space-oriented design elements sprinkled throughout. After settling in and to unwind from the day's journey, enjoy a cocktail in the hotel lobby before heading out for dinner. Eunice is a great option not too far from the hotel. With exceptional service and a focus on Southern-inspired seafood specialties, this is a spot that supremely captures the essence of the city.

Day Two Wake up early to get a head start on exploring this massive metropolitan area. Order room service from the hotel, or head over to Sinfull Bakery for a sweet treat to get the day started. This retro-inspired bakery has a deceptively modest brick façade that hides an adorable plant-based bakery filled with freshly baked sweet eats. After adequately filling the belly, it’s time to head for the stars with The Infinite. This unparalleled virtual reality experience takes visitors aboard the International Space Station. is so well-known. The Museum of Fine Arts is absolutely unmissable, and the exhibits rotate often so be sure to plan with that in mind. Once you’ve had an eyeful of art, head over to Post Market for lunch. There are plenty of choices inside this industrial, yet elevated, foodcourt-style market. In keeping with the seafood theme, Golfstrommen is one unique spot that shouldn’t be missed. Taking its cues from Norwegian cuisine and gulf coast offerings, there isn’t another quite like it. After filling up on seafood, take in the incredible city views from the Post Market rooftop. The sight may almost rival that of The Infinite. It’s impossible to see the whole city before it’s time to drive home, but the knowledge that Houston is just a few hours away will make the end of the weekend more tolerable.

Homesick Blues

Head back to the hotel and lounge at the rooftop pool, or get moving in the fully outfitted gym, complete with Peloton bikes, before getting a good night’s rest.

Day Three On the final day, it’s time to see the museums for which the city

For East Austinites missing a bit of home on their weekend away, there are plenty of options to alleviate hunger for the familiar. Both East Side King and Salt & Time have Houston locations inside the Post Market —just steps away from the Blossom Hotel.

ASK AN EXPERT Austin is ever evolving and will continue to do so and much of its history will fade. I really enjoy chatting with the older generation and gaining insight into the community and the times they grew up. History may be fading, but having the respect for the folks who laid the groundwork for the desire to be in East Austin is something that resonates deeply with me. I keep uncovering new bits and pieces of East Austin, and the resilience and drive of that generation continually amaze me.

What are the most important considerations when selecting a home builder or general contractor for renovations?

&

Q A

With Real Estate Broker & Investor Josh Brunsmann What are the most important considerations when searching for the right property to develop a home? There are several considerations but probably one of the most important is knowing exactly the overall home size you need and making sure to build or buy with that constraint in mind. Looking in the future, resale value is also an important consideration. After five years, many new home owners are selling and capitalizing on the tax free incentives of the sale. Buyers need to also consider what’s going up in the area around them and try to stay comparable to the market.

Navigating Austin’s current real estate market can prove to be a long, stressful challenge. What is your advice for staying motivated throughout the search? 42 EASTside | April/May2022

Understanding that you and thousands are seeking the same thing: a home in Austin. Don’t overlook a home that needs a little bit of work, or one that offers room for expansion. Staying persistent and remaining open to look into expanding pockets that are close to where you may want to live. The biggest ticket is taking your emotions out of it, which is easier said than done, but realizing the stress isn’t going to help you, your agent, or family on locating your next home. Don’t feel the end of the world is going to happen if you can’t obtain a home tomorrow; just stay vigilant.

How do you balance maintaining the history of East Austin while embracing change? East Austin has a very rich history. It’s easy to forget the past and how we got here and also that the home that is being torn down was once someone’s dream home. East

Make sure you go over their contract in depth, and have an attorney review this. Really spend the time understanding the costs associated with these avenues, as labor is hard to find and expensive. Change orders add up quickly, so having a game plan for your new construction home is critical. Knowing that a 4-5 month renovation is really 9 months. Our city is backed up with permits, and the city is not helping anyone get a home done quicker. If anything, they hinder the process. Personally building a home right now, my taste in design was not realistic with our code, so I resisted and only made the process more challenging. Let the pros do their job; you hired them for a reason, and after the vetting process and contracting with them, you should have confidence that they can do the job.

A Taste of the Modernized West

Finding A ‘Little Trouble’ in Lockhart, Texas WORDS BY Abby L. Johnson PHOTOS BY Eric Morales

The ‘Little City with the Big Heart’ is primarily known for its legendary barbecue. But for those who choose to dig a little deeper, it quickly becomes apparent that Lockhart has so much more to offer in fine dining than meets the eye. 44 EASTside | April/May2022

n the search for a ‘Little Trouble,’ it is almost too easy to pass by this hidden gem. At the last second, a simple neon sign grabs passerby's attention and beckons them into a subterranean world. To enter the restaurant, patrons must descend a flight of stairs into the dimly lit basement level restaurant. Small candles in crystalware dot the tables and bar, adding a pervasive sultry feeling. The shock of taxidermied animals keeping watch over their terrain like frozen scenes from an old Western is a point of conversation that can’t be ignored. Despite the sense that Little Trouble exists in another timeline, small anachronistic details will remind patrons that they have not, in fact, time traveled. A large, seductive poster of Dolly Parton graces the wall behind the bar, making for a more genuine and less cinematic or theatrical feel while maintaining a sense of whimsy. Cozy up under Dolly’s watch at the worn bar for the evening to sample a number of house cocktails that are available. One standout is a smoky version of the classic Prohibition-era cocktail Last Word. This iteration subs the gin in favor of Mezcal. Small choices like the inclusion of the Last Word make this place feel like a secret speakeasy from another universe. For a filling starter to accompany this strong drink, order the ‘Chicken’ Fried Mushrooms. Fried oyster mushrooms, served with

a tangy chipotle sauce that elevates and honors the barbecue traditions of the city, is the grown up, vegetable-based version of chicken tenders. Succulent and hearty, they are just enough to whet the appetite in preparation for the meal to come. The concise menu, like the space, is full of small surprises. One vaguely named main course, ‘Vegetables,’ appears unassuming, but this medley of fresh produce is not an afterthought. Though the plate changes with the seasons, one constant is that every item on the plate is prepared differently. Some may be pickled, others roasted, but all are seasoned to bring out their respective, unique qualities. A bit of texture is added by the crunchy quinoa delicately sprinkled on top. For larger groups, the Local Chicken Experience will easily serve a crowd. Fresh roti

bread sits next to a large roasted half chicken, seasoned simply, and cooked to perfection. The ingredients of the Red and Green Sauce that accompany the platter are a secret kept close to the chests of the kitchen staff. But that doesn't keep diners from diving into the unknown flavors and savoring the experience.

At the end of the meal, the check is brought to patrons hidden inside the pages of old pulpy, paperback western novels. Wedged in those pages, one can only imagine, are tales of a space and time that elicits the same feeling that the atmosphere and cuisine of Little Trouble has painstakingly created.

A Journey for Curry

Take a Trip through the Himalayas in Search of Flavor WORDS BY

Justin Butts RECIPE BY Kayla Butts Benavides

Curry is meant to be eaten with the fingers of the right hand. The touch of the fingers creates a connection, a closeness to the food.

C

urry was our daily fare while trekking with horses through the Himalayan Mountains. We hiked up and down the perilous trails under blue skies or drenching rain, the shaggy black horses swaying under their loads, my hunger growling all day in the thin air. Each night, the porter would build a fire from dried cow dung to cook curry with kidney beans and okra which he served to us on dented tin plat46 EASTside | April/May2022

ters. The guide delighted himself in teaching me the foulest curse words in the Hindi language, and I shouted them into the night to the uproarious laughter of our little band as the ashes from the fire rose to a million glittering stars shining in the black sky. We stopped at villages along the way so I could study their farming techniques. These modest farmers, illiterate and impoverished, yet geniuses with the soil, were impeccable hosts. Sitting in the upper room of a house, the farmer’s family served me a glass of mint tea with a dollop of freshly-churned butter dropped into the cup while the farmer himself started a fire in the Franklin stove to prepare curd curry in a pressure cooker. Two teenage boys sat crosslegged in the corner giggling as they rolled hashish balls into a large pile. This particular preserve was part of the stock laid by to get this family through five long months of winter trapped in their tiny house. I sat on a threadbare rug and ate the yellow curry with my fingers, my stomach churning the curds and butter, and find more at eastsideatx.com

smiled and bowed my head in gratitude. Later on, we stopped in a tea house for guides, some of the best mountaineers in the world, and sat around a table with our heads down eating a dark red curry so spicy that my face sweated and cheeks flushed, and my breath came as hyperventilation. The heat of that curry kept even the bones warm at those frozen heights. The red curry recipe shared here is most like this one but with the heat dialed down to the lowest setting. There is no one curry of India, or of the mountains, or even of a village. Each family, and even members of the same family, have their own version of curry. The coriander, cumin, and turmeric are ground differently or added to the cooking process at different stages. There are more or less chili spices, perhaps water or coconut milk or dry, with beans or eggs or curds or chicken, plus a variety of vegetables or none at all— the possibilities are infinite. No two are exactly alike, even if cooked by the same person on different days.

At the guest house, towards the end of the trip, we ate green curry with lentils served on 19th century china in the extravagant luxury of an English tea room. That curry was so delicious that it was ruinous, damning all the curries to follow, until this green curry recipe by Kayla, which is our closest approximation.

Red Chicken Curry

Green Chicken Curry with Lentils

Eating curry with the fingers, in the Indian style, connects a person to the food and to the place. This is true whether sitting on a farmer’s floor in the Himalayas or at a farmer’s table in Austin, Texas, or any place in between.

Ingredients: 1 t. coriander seeds 12 cardamom pods or 1 t. ground cardamom 3/4 t. cumin seeds 1 T. olive oil 2 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts and thighs 2 t. salt, plus 1 t. 1 t. ground black pepper, plus ½ t. 1 T. butter 1 onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 T. fresh ginger, grated 1 T. curry powder 1 t. garam masala 1 t. turmeric ½ -1 t. cayenne pepper (optional) 1 (14.5 oz.) can crushed tomatoes 2 T. tomato paste 1/2 c. plain yogurt 1 c. chicken stock 1 bunch fresh cilantro 1 lemon

Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 50 minutes

Directions: Over low heat, roast coriander, cardamom, and cumin seeds, stirring regularly, until fragrant. Remove from heat, and grind spices using a grinder or mortar and pestle. Preheat olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Season chicken with salt and pepper and add it to the pan in batches, making sure not to crowd the pan. Cook the chicken until brown (about 6 minutes on each side), but not cooked through. Set chicken aside and cut into bitesize pieces once cool. Add butter and onions to the pan and cook for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add garlic and ginger to the pan and cook for 30 additional seconds. Once garlic is fragrant, add the chicken, ground spice mixture, additional salt and pepper, and remaining ingredients. Heat to a boil, then decrease heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

Serves: 4 Prep time: 7 minutes Inactive prep time: 30 minutes - 8 hours Cook time: 45 minutes Ingredients: 2 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast and thighs (cut into bite-size pieces) 1 medium onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 T. brown sugar 2 t. curry powder 2 t. salt 1 t. fresh ginger, grated 1 t. garam masala 1 t. cardamom 1 t. turmeric 1 t. ground cumin 1 t. ground coriander 2 T. olive oil 3 T. butter 2 c. chicken broth Optional: 3/4 c. split lentils, rinsed (if omitted, reduce chicken broth to 1 c.) 1 can (about 13.5 oz.) full-fat coconut milk Directions: In a leak-proof sealable bag, combine chicken, onion, garlic, and spices. Invert bag several times to combine ingredients. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes and up to 8 hours. In a large sauté pan, melt butter in olive oil over medium heat. Once the butter has melted and becomes fragrant, add marinated chicken, chicken stock, and lentils to the pan. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low-medium, add in coconut milk, and simmer (taking care not to boil) mixture for another 10 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and lentils are tender. Serve curry over prepared basmati rice or with naan, garnish with cilantro or basil and lemon wedges.

Serve curry over rice or with naan, topped with fresh cilantro and sliced lemon. {the delicious side of austin}

well. A hazy IPA, influenced by Pinthouse Pizza’s popular Electric Jellyfish, is representative of the establishment’s attention to both historically German beers as well as the surrounding environment. For beer newbies and seasoned experts alike, their brews can be sampled by ordering a tasting flight to get a sense of the variety. Koko’s takes careful cues from its storied lineage but adds an updated, modern twist with an Austin sensibility to each of their specialties.

is difficult to question with such a prestigious name backing the venture. Head brewer Katie Lowe, though, may just be the true star of Koko’s Brewery and Biergarten.

Each of Koko’s house brews is carefully created on-site under Katie's watch. Just to the side of the spacious outdoor area, which has room for an impressive 400 visitors, is where her brewing magic happens. The modestly-sized operation turns out a surprisingly large amount of options, thanks to Katie’s expertise. Traditional German-style beers like the Lager, Dunkel, Boch, and Kolsch grace the menu, but there are touches of Austin among the offerings as

In addition to the excellent brews, bratwursts, pretzels, and other German snacks round out the menu. Uniquely Texas offerings like rabbit-rattlesnake brats and fried pretzels with queso stand alongside classics like German potato salad and wienerschnitzel. With the robust and comforting menu and welcoming space, Koko’s is an easy choice for a weekend hang or happy hour. Currently Koko’s brews are only available at the biergarten; so, for now, beer fanatics will have to pop over in-person to enjoy the cold beverages, hot pretzels, and merriment found at this new neighborhood joint.

Did you know? According to a report on brewery employee diversity published in 2019 by the Brewers Association, just 7.5% of reporting breweries employed a woman in the role of brewer. While the root cause of this disparity is up for debate, one thing is for certain. With the addition of Koko’s, the face (and taste) of craft beer is changing in East Austin. find more at eastsideatx.com
