More Than a Story
O
ver the past five years, working on the September issue has become a personal favorite of ours. It’s always a joy meeting all the change-makers and leaders, hearing their stories, and learning what makes these individuals so successful in their respective fields.
I have met many people over the last 17 years doing interviews and photoshoots, and Martha Cotera is one of the most energetic, yet easygoing, woman I have ever met. When Ms. Cotera walked into the room for her photoshoot, everyone could feel the power and energy she was exuding. The room upticked and took notice, not in a pushy way, but full of love. She was just fantastic to be around. Her smile, laugh, and conversation during the interview and photoshoot will be an experience I will not easily forget. I am amazed at not only her impressive accomplishments but also the way that she treats everyone. I aspire to be a little bit more like Ms. Cotera, to embody her strength and energy and her respect for others. I hope our imagery and our storytelling abilities live up to the legacy of each of the women in this issue. As you dive deeper into the mag, you will also see our once-a-year Leading Women special section, where we have the honor of highlighting the women-owned and -operated businesses here in town. This platform is an excellent way to learn about fellow business owners and their stories. These diverse, powerful women came together to tell their stories while uplifting other local women doing great things within the community. I hope you are as inspired as we are by the women in this issue. Gratefully,
The team had some fabulous photos to choose from when it came to the cover for this issue. But the lovely Martha Cotera’s smile with the light and timing were just right for this inspirational cover. Eric Morales captured this cover, and it might be one of our favorites this year. Photo taken at The Cat Noir Hotel on East 11th Street.

Shaping History
Women Who Have Transformed Austin WORDS BY
Sean Saldana PHOTOS BY J Muzacz
Austin’s a place known for its values of inclusion and acceptance. Teresa Lozano Long, Bertha Sadler Means, and Sheryl Cole have built their lives on these principles.
W
hat makes Austin unique is its culture: the food, the music, the weirdness, and above all, the community. Like in every community, there are people who have risen above, achieved at high levels, and made sure the generations after them could do the same. Fewer names have become more prominent than Teresa Lozano Long. Originally from Premont, Texas, she made her way to Austin in the mid1940s to attend the University of Texas where she would eventually become the university’s first Mexican American and first woman to earn a PhD in kinesiology. Though she originally began her career in education, she’s best known today through her and her husband Joe Long’s philanthropy. To date, the Longs have dedicated more than $100 million to the arts, medicine, and education benefitting Hispanic communities around Austin and the state as a whole. Change doesn’t always happen on a large fiscal scale to have a massive impact, though. Bertha Sadler Means started her career within Austin’s then-segregated Black
education system, teaching at Blackshear Elementary, Kealing Junior High, and Allan Junior High; however, it didn’t take long for her to achieve a leading role in Austin’s desegregation. In addition to being among the first generation of Black educators to teach in Austin’s white schools, Means was also a prominent member of Human Relations Commission, NAACP, and Urban League, among other organizations. Her accomplishments were memorialized in 2014 when the Austin Independent School District changed the name of Pearce Middle School to Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy. It’s also important to remember that, for better or worse, declarative milestones are not just features of any specific era of history. The barriers that exist are being broken all the time. Having careers in both accounting and law, Sheryl Cole got her start in advocacy in her local Parent Teachers Association— a pivotal experience that would eventually lead to her developing the organizing skills necessary to become the first Black woman elected to City Council in 2006. Her advocacy didn’t stop on the local level, though. After serving three terms on City Council, Cole was elected to House District 46 in the Texas Legislature in 2018 where she represents East Austin, Manor, and Pflugerville. Pinning down what or who makes Austin such a unique place can be an elusive process. After all, the heart of a community lies not necessarily in a physical location but within the interactions between everyday people. Like with all communities, there are certain individuals who have dedicated their lives to making this city an inclusive and accepting environment. It’s worth taking some time to learn about them and the impact of their noble work.
Did You Know? Local nonprofit Latinitas honored Bertha Sadler Means and Teresa Lozano Long, alongside several other
women activists, at their Purple Party by unveiling gorgeous mural portraits of each honoree. Created by artists J Muzacz and Carmen Rangel, in collaboration with The Mosaic Workshop, these smaller murals were unveiled alongside a larger, permanent installation featuring Ana ‘Technomama’ Sisnett at Holly Commons. A Quartet’s Mission to Inspire with Music from around the World WORDS BY
Sommer Brugal Morales
For new listeners, the quartet that makes up the band Ley Line suggests starting with the song Oxun. Using both the Spanish and English languages, Oxun combines lyrics passed on from a woman the band met while traveling through Brazil, and the words offer an oral history for the way songs are passed down from one person to the next.
“I
t’s this really cool fusion, and it’s all centered around uplifting our life source of fresh water,” says band member Kate Robberson. The song illustrates a sense of responsibility and stewardship of the earth, while also offering a vibrant celebration. Kate explains that so often, the idea of activism and making change can feel heavy and serious, but having songs that uplift the movement and those who are working tirelessly are equally as important. That combination of duty and action, yet beauty and admiration of the world’s natural resources, is something any listener will gain from Ley Line’s music. The all-woman group and business blend sounds and influences from Brazil, Latin America, and West Africa to encourage a connection back to the water, to each other, and to the environment. The four musicians met at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2014, but it wasn’t until 2016 the two duos – one being Emilie Basez and Kate; the other, twins Lydia and Madeleine Froncek – began playing music together and forming their premier album, Field Notes.
The foundation, Madeleine says, was built on “vulnerability and creating intimate spaces of intention.” “The sound came together organically, reflecting everyone’s voice and laying the groundwork for what Ley Line would become,” Emilie says. Their newest album, We Saw Blue, released in 2020; 12 EASTside | Fall/Winter 2021
however, it is more reflective of the diversity of places they’ve been. “You can hear the world influence, you can hear Brazil, you can hear West Africa,” says Lydia. “It just feels like us four right now.” For the quartet, storytelling is a central part of their mission, but music is just one aspect of that. The group has a visual AP, released earlier this year to accompany We Saw Blue, which documents their travels through Brazil in 2017, and a podcast, Following Ley Line, which takes a deeper look at the songs featured. Both invite audiences into the conversations happening behind the scenes and in between practices. They “help paint the larger picture of what we’re trying to do with our music and how we’ve all come to be together,” Kate adds. Whether during shows or through educational programs, the musicians often share folk songs from around the world, speak indepth about the instruments they’re using, and pay respect to the places each has been and the people who’ve educated them. In doing so, they hope it will inspire curiosity about other cultures and help people realize that everyone is more alike than different.

Growing together as both musicians and business partners is an every-day process for the women of Ley Line. At the core is trust and how that plays into their dynamic as each becomes more dependent on the other and bears a little more responsibility. Throughout the pandemic, they’ve engaged in group therapy to learn how best to have conversations about the future, what their individual life goals look like, and how each of those fits into a whole. “We’re all committed to each other in this way,” says Madeleine, “and there’s so much that’s connected to that musically and from a business standpoint.”

Inspirational Women FLOURISHING IN A TIME OF CHANGE WORDS BY
Guadalupe Triana Morales
For a person to make an impact in their community, it must first come from the heart—something the following four women know a thing or two about. In their own unique way, these women are taking a radical approach to bring change to their community, to ensure their voices are heard, and to stand up for what they believe. Even during a time clouded by uncertainty and a looming health crisis, they continue to prove that they are resilient. Through community, connection, and innovation, these women are using their voices and talents to send a message, to bring people together, and to create stronger communities of individuals who inspire one another. In the face of adversity, these inspirational women continue doing what they do best: grow and prosper.

Creating a Just Future Martha Cotera Writer, Historian, & Community Leader
I
nside Martha Cotera’s office is a grand, wooden bookshelf that displays a colorful array of her most powerful tools to date: books. On the shelf are plenty of influential titles, like La Historia de México and The New Jim Crow, books that have clearly inspired Martha’s work through the years. As a professional historian and librarian, Martha’s two occupations have long been intertwined with her work in the community. “Knowledge and information are my strengths,” she explains. These days, the writer, historian, influential Chicana feminist, and civil rights activist expresses that la lucha sigue. Martha proves that the work is far from over, and her schedule shows it. While there might be plenty left to do, it’s also important to step back and acknowledge what’s been achieved. Few can say that they’ve helped shape history—especially when it comes to civil rights in Texas. Even fewer can say their work has opened doors for the women after them. Through her published works, Martha has cemented her influential status in the Chicana Feminist movement, something she doesn’t take lightly. To Martha, it’s powerful to hear young people boldly claim the feminist label, something that hasn’t always been the case. “This is despite the fact that everything has been done to suppress the power of women.” Throughout the years, Martha’s been involved in movements and campaigns that sought to ensure that Latinx, along with other disenfran-
chised BIPOC populations in Austin, received access to the resources they desperately need to succeed. It all clearly inspires her work today. “My wish is that Austin would live up to its promise to become a progressive community for everybody,” she explains. She credits her inspiration to do lifelong liberation work to a value her mother taught her when she was young: to be servicial, or to be helpful, and service-minded. “I saw people stepping up to help my mother navigate a foreign country, a foreign language—I was learning from it,” Martha reflects. “I now realize I got those skills by watching people help us.” Martha is passionate about many of the issues affecting some of the city’s most vulnerable populations, but now there’s one issue she’ll be dedicating extra time to these next few months. Martha is focused on the reclamation of the historic Palm School and Palm Park on Cesar Chavez Street. She explains that at least nine generations of Mexican American students attended Palm School, making it a significant part of Mexican American history in Austin. Martha, along with several other community activists, wants to ensure that the space, and the history surrounding it, are properly preserved. “Justice calls for an acknowledgment of this rich history,” Martha smiles. SAVING PALM PARK In order to preserve its cultural heritage, many Latinx community leaders are urging the county to transfer ownership of the Palm School building to the Mexican American Cultural Center, which is run by the city. Activists want to ensure that the space, and the history surrounding it, are preserved properly. Many are working diligently to ensure the museum also honors indigenous peoples’ history, as well as the often-overlooked Afro Mexican and Underground Railroad legacies. In order for the museum to happen, the county will have to partner with the city. speakupaustin.org/ palmdistrict

hether it’s attending rallies with Black Austin Coalition, or booking popular artists for the Jump On It festival series, everything Brina Turner does is for her community. Nowadays, the activist, entrepreneur, and Jump On It operations director stays busy finding new ways for her and her husband, artist and community leader Charles “Nook” Turner, to uplift and celebrate the people around them. “We wear a lot of different hats,” Brina chuckles. “We do a lot of work in different circles.” Brina’s diverse work mainly focuses on one thing: empowering Black people. Established in 1997, Jump On It is an event series that brings the community together through live entertainment and provides a range of community resources that often include things like health screenings and voter registration. With direction from the late Austin civil rights community leader Dorothy Turner, Nook created Jump On It. Since then, the summer event series has taken many different forms. Jump On It combines and celebrates many of their deepest passions: community, activism, and entertainment. They’re all part of the vibrant culture Brina uses to uplift the community. “We build things—the Black community [constantly] rebuilds what has been lost and what has been a cause and effect of gentrification,” says Brina. “We’re here, and we’re a force to be reckoned with, no matter the location.” Over the years, Jump On It has occupied many different venues and, in a way, is always evolving. Even with countless logistical challenges, nothing has stopped the duo from reaching their audience. The pandemic has undoubtedly changed the way Jump On It events look and feel. In December 2020, Jump On It hosted the We Are Austin Virtual Series which was recorded live and broadcasted through Facebook. The event highlighted the community of hip-hop artists in Austin with over 12,000 virtual attendees. Currently, Jump On It is working on a few projects, one of them being a radio station that will be available to listeners via an app. The app itself is being developed by a group of youth who are programming, producing, and ultimately creating the radio station from scratch. Right now, the Jump On It radio app is set to launch early 2022. Something that’s always been important to Bri-
“We’re here, and we’re a force to be reckoned with, no matter the location.”
na, within these youth programs, is to provide a range of activities during a youth camp. “[Kids] will never truly know what they enjoy until they’re exposed to it,” Brina shares. “I think that’s one of the key components that is important to what we do—it’s exposing the youth [we work with] to different things.” Using her passion and talent for bringing people together along with the encouragement of her husband, Brina created She A Pro, an event that recognizes the hard work of women whose work often goes unnoticed. “The motivation behind that was [to uplift] our queens and give them the space—whatever their walk is. If they’re doing their best, then they’re a pro!” she exclaims.
{the inspirational side of austin}
Brina wanted to use the opportunity to recognize and highlight the women who do the work and never get acknowledged because of their background or social status. “Jump On It wanted to make sure that they are recognized, and elevated, and say thank you,” she says. With the endless hurdles and demanding work required, Brina says it’s all worth it to see “the smile on people’s faces and the elation… [that] motivates me every time.” Contact: (512) 348-8005 jumponitoutreach@gmail.com jumponit.live @jumponit.live

explains that while lower prices may be more agreeable to consumers, the environmental price and cost of wellbeing of all the people who interact with the garment is much higher.
n a time when fast fashion reigns supreme, Miranda Bennett Studio is embracing a steady, more sustainable process that’s gracefully leading to a greener future.
One garment at a time, fashion designer and business owner Miranda Bennett is asking customers to reexamine their relationship with fashion. “We’re asking the customer to have a really big paradigm shift,” Miranda explains. “Our garments are rooted in functionality, craftsmanship, [and] personal style—they’re not rooted in trends.” Founded in 2013, Miranda Bennett Studio is an ethical and sustainable apparel brand based in East Austin with customers around the globe. From designing to dyeing, to cutting and sewing, the entire process takes place within the city limits. “What really drew me to East 11th Street was that it is one of the last thoroughfares in Austin that’s all locally-owned,” she says. “It also happens to be primarily women-owned businesses, so it was just the ideal place for us.” Now, after eight years in East Austin, the team continues prioritizing major elements of the production process. To Miranda, knowing exactly the conditions under which people are working, taking full ownership and being accountable as a brand— all help shape the direction of the business. “There was a lot of intentionality,” she says, “not only in terms of how that nourished me as a creative but also how that would allow us to ensure we had an ethical and sustainable supply chain.” Throughout the years, Miranda has put the core tenet of treating everyone with dignity first, including her team, customers, and, of course, the planet. At the studio, she works alongside her team, ensuring that textile dye is always safe for the environment, and waste is kept out of landfills.
With many questions quickly rising around climate change and sustainability, Miranda remains positive and optimistic about the future. “It’s a space that is incredibly diverse in the [number] of stakeholders that there actually are in this movement going forward.” For those interested in pursuing more sustainable practices, she quotes American professional tennis player, Arthur Ashe, and suggests that people ‘start where you are, with what you have.’
“Our garments are rooted in functionality, craftsmanship, [and] personal style— they’re not rooted in trends.”
“The first thing you can do is start to ask questions of the brands that you’re shopping,” Miranda smiles. “When you start to do a little bit of investigating, that will tell you so much about the brand.” Currently the Miranda Bennett team is gearing up to release the new fall line, which will feature items in a range of colors, including new rich reds, deep leafy greens, and natural tans dyed using walnut shells, madder root, and Mexican Mint Marigold – which have all been grown just 20 miles outside of Austin. Miranda’s efforts are a direct response to the fast fashion culture that dominates American markets today. According to a 2020 study, each year the fashion industry goes through 79 trillion liters of water and 92 million tons of waste—an issue Miranda is well aware of. While there may be a few who criticize her studio for its higher-standard, which is reflected in their prices, Miranda urges people to understand the process and examine their own fashion choices. rowing up, Sheila Lopez was never the type of girl to stop and pose for a picture. In fact, to avoid the camera, she would usually volunteer to snap the pic. But today, the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blogger’s radiant digital presence is celebrated by a community Sheila has helped create. Throughout her Instagram, loyal followers leave comments expressing admiration for the various ensembles Sheila brings to life. “The queen speaks! Don’t ever forget you’re a boss lady!” encourages a follower. “Way to represent, girl!” responds another. In 2005, Sheila Lopez left Brownsville, Texas, to attend UT. Once she graduated, things quickly changed. College friends moved away, which is when Sheila says she began looking for her community. “I thought‘where can I go listen [and] dance to Spanish music? Where are the taco spots? Where are my people?’” It was then that Sheila began venturing out to events on the Eastside that were primarily hosted by people of color. There she connected with artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives. “When I started going to those events, I met a lot of different people [which] allowed me to start collaborating with them,” Sheila explains. “I started blogging about my journey, and self-love, and body positivity, and really getting out of my shell.” Sheila says that it wasn’t until her late 20s that she really began to blossom. Before that, she was a shy person who didn’t even like taking pictures. But once her friends moved away to pursue post-grad dreams, she knew she had to do the same. That’s when Sheila’s creative project, La Divina Latina, was born. Over the years, the hashtag chingonatude creator has amassed a following that’s nearly 21,000 strong on Instagram. Her bold and bright and colorful style draws great admiration from women around the world. “I’ve gotten this big following, because somehow people resonated with [my] message,” Sheila says. “There’s a person behind the account.” These past few years, Sheila has used her platform to empower many of the communities and movements in which she’s involved. She’s built a community that connects people.
“I spent so many years in a very dark place and not loving myself and to be here now— I love it.” “I spent so many years in a very dark place and not loving myself and to be here now—I love it,” Sheila grins. “That’s what I hope for anyone else who might be [where I was].” A few years ago, Sheila was flown to New York for a fashion competition that American plus size women’s clothing company and lifestyle brand, Ashley Stewart, was hosting. It was something she never imagined for herself. Sheila recalls fondly, “It was an amazing experience, and I had a lot of support.” Though Sheila still works a full-time job in marketing, she manages to run her blog and create content, in addition to doing brand promotion, negotiations, and collaborations with other Latina-owned brands. Sheila finds constant inspiration from the many mujeres in her community who happen to be artists, entrepreneurs, and business owners. “I see their hustle, and I see them going after everything they’re passionate about,” she says. “When I see them doing that, it pushes me to go for the next thing, too.” Contact: sheilalopezbookings@gmail.com ladivinalatina.com @ladivina.latina

Surrounded by Community Creating space, support, and friendship for girls who’ve been displaced WORDS BY
Sommer Brugal of Girl Forward
PHOTOS Courtesy
When Aadela Abdullah and Sarayu Adeni met in 2017, Sarayu came prepared with a bag full of questions. She wanted to break the ice and get to know her mentee. What were her interests? What are her dreams? They each took turns asking and answering, learning about the other and building what would become a close friendship they maintain today.
G
irl Forward — an Austin and Chicago-based organization dedicated to creating a space and enhancing opportunities for girls ages 14-21 in grades 9-12 who’ve been displaced globally by conflict and persecution — is how the two came together. Learning about the organization, their bond seemed almost inevitable. “Girl Forward is being part of a support system, a community for young women who have come to this country for various reasons,” says Sarayu, 19. “We’re a group of interesting women from all over the world creating a safe space for these young women to achieve their dreams.”
Speaking no English, Aadela, now 19, began the second semester of her seventh-grade year when she arrived in Austin in 2015. Girl Forward became a space where she was able to make friends, learn new things, and feel supported. Through the relationships she built, Aadela gained confidence, learned about who she is, and, perhaps most importantly, started believing in herself and what she could achieve. 36 EASTside | Fall/Winter 2021
Girl Forward expanded from Chicago to Austin in 2015 with just one pilot program, according to Executive Director Ashley Marine. By 2016, they were offering a range of options, such as mentorship, education, and safe space programs. They celebrated their 10th anniversary in August. Before the pandemic, the organization was serving about 250 girls annually in Austin and Chicago combined. And while closing Austin’s physical space during the pandemic may have initially been a setback, Ashley says they are reaching nearly 70 girls virtually, which actually turned out to be “significantly better and more sustainable.” The organization – and its offerings – became more accessible to a larger group of girls during this time. Before joining Girl Forward, Aadela didn’t know many people in Austin from her home country of Afghanistan. Seeing people that look like her and meeting girls with similar stories gave her “a comforting feeling,” she says. “The day I went to camp for the first time, I was really worried. But when I [arrived], I just felt so find more at eastsideatx.com
comfortable,” she recalls. “I saw a lot of girls from countries like Syria and Iraq, and they wearing the hijab like me. All of them became my friends. I didn’t expect it be that good.” That’s why Aadela and Sarayu encourage others to look around their communities, their neighborhood, and talk to people who may come from different places and encourage them to follow their dreams. Both women have since graduated from the mentor-mentee program. Aadela is attending Austin Community College and hopes to transfer to the University of Texas before attending medical school. Sarayu continues to be involved in Girl Forward as a board member. Still, the two remain closely bonded by their time together and what the organization offered them: a sense of belonging.

abound in this personal and airy Eastside remodel, which Shannon and her husband recently completed over the course of six months for their young and growing family of five. The same sensitive, curatorial touch abounds in Shannon’s professional portfolio; however, designing for one’s own tastes presents a particular set of opportunities – AND challenges. “My own home is like my canvas,” she explains. “I can take risks with movement, pattern, and color that might find more at eastsideatx.com

be hard for a client to accept.” For example, desert pink and mustard yellow tones adorn her bedroom: a rich and unexpected combination that undeniably delights. Yet even prior to selecting finishes or furniture, the home’s organization had to be deftly redefined to add much-needed living space. Shannon focused on converting the existing garage into the home’s main sitting area, a move that required pouring a new slab over the garage’s existing slab to bring it level with the rest of the home. Vaulted ceilings and smart landscaping further
integrate the converted space seamlessly within the original home. As the kitchen had to be spatially efficient yet open, ample storage is provided within a light green wall of cabinetry that also serves to reinforce the boundary between living and cooking spaces, all without closing off the rooms from each other entirely. The home, like Shannon’s design practice, is simultaneously intimate and adventurous, maximizing economy without minimizing access to space, light, or tasteful aesthetic.
Did You Know? Shannon offers virtual design services for non-local clients, producing design boards, sourcing local vendors, and liaising virtually at an affordable rate.

Things to Know:
A Weekend In
The Virgin Islands
A Caribbean Jewel
WORDS & PHOTOS BY Ashley Bowling
With crystal blue waters and mountains rising out of the sea, this Caribbean paradise consists of 50 islands and cays. Though all gorgeous in their own way, exuding unique colonial character, the largest of the islands are St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. Natural beauty abounds no matter what island calls your name. Lush mountains, tropical forests, peaceful beaches, and rocky sea coves are sprinkled throughout, where crystal-clear waters and steady winds lure sailors who anchor in the sheltered bays awash with fresh catches, sea turtle sightings, and endless snorkeling options.
Day One After landing in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, hop in a rental car and get ready to hit the winding road. But first, Charlotte Amalie is a
cruise port town and full of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, so stop for lunch and a latte or stroll the street shops. Or, opt to climb the historic 99 Steps up to Blackbeard’s Castle where visitors can en-

joy panoramic views of the capital city before heading out for a long weekend in nature. We typically stop by the local supermarket to pick up the week’s supply of necessities and then hit the road aimed for an Airbnb on the less crowed side of the island. Opting for a resort-style condo in Sapphire Bay was on the agenda for our crew. Sapphire Bay arguably has some of the best snorkeling on the island. It’s where patios land on white sand and the ocean gently laps within 20 feet of the sleeping quarters. It’s also a hop, skip, and a jump to some of the island’s best restaurants, and it’s where ferry boats sail to other islands daily. After being greeted by
the local lizards (aka iguanas), exploring the grounds, and, of course, dipping those toes into the sand, end the day with happy hour at Agave. Their margs and queso alone leave guests craving the island long after returning stateside.
Day Two Nature lovers will delight in the island of St. Johns, a 15-minute ferry boat ride away. Both passenger and automobile ferries are available, though bringing your car is wise with so much to explore on this emerald isle. Virgin Islands National Park encompasses two-thirds of the island, including protected bays, stunning beaches, underwater sea gardens,

petroglyphs, hiking trails, and ruins of sugar mills from centuries past. Jump in the car and go bay hopping, strike up a conversation with local artists who set up on the beach for the day, and grab some grub and a local brew at one of the many beachside stands along the way. Or, opt for the Reef Bay guided hike and learn about the 800 species of plants and 30 species of tropical birds that are found within the park. If the itinerary permits, do both! The first day, we explored the national park on foot and even got a few swims in along the way as we stumbled upon several secluded beaches while trekking through the tropical forests. On day two, we bay-hopped and even swam with
The ferry boats to St. Croix only sail on certain days of the week and depart at 8am from Charlotte Amalie and leave St. Croix at 4pm. So if St. Croix is on your bucket list and six hours just isn’t enough time, consider making a weekend of it!
Getting Around:
With 32 square miles of island cliffs and shorelines, a rental car is the only way to go in St. Thomas. Additionally, USVI is the only place in the United States where driving on the left side of the road is permissible.
Forecast:
Expect typical Caribbean temps in the 80s any time of year. Be sure to bring the reef-safe sunblock and reapply often.
that leaves the island promptly at the top of every hour. If time is of the essence, no worries, a light bite at Raw Sushi & Sake Bar or a hearty dinner at Pesce iTALiAN back in Red Hook are not to be missed on this trip.
Day Three If time permits, an excursion to the snorkelers and divers paradise of beautiful Buck Island, 1.5 miles off the coast of St. Croix, is pure bliss. One of the best dive sites in all the Virgin Islands, Buck Island Reef is a protected marine sanctuary. The reef features elkhorn coral grottoes and is home to numerous fish species.
St. Croix also boasts a Heritage Trail, a 28-mile self-guided driving tour that guides visitors around the island’s historical, cultural, and natural attractions. If the itinerary is limited for time, be sure to get lunch at Sangria’s Beachside Bistro then venture on to Magens Bay on the way back to the capital city of Charlotte Amalie. With its green hills, creamy sands, and coconut palm-lined waters, it’s no wonder why Magens Bay frequently graces the lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Visitors can opt to explore the bay by kayaking the calm waters or explore by foot on a two-mile hike
through the preserve maintained by the Nature Conservancy. No matter the type of beach-goer, from shoreside-loungers, to deep sea divers, to eco-forest enthusiasts, Virgin Islands has a little something for everyone to feel right at home accompanied with the local’s down to earth, friendly smiles. Yet, St. Thomas also has the ability to carry its visitors so far away from home that they may never want to return after gazing into its sun-drenched turquoise waters, catching glimpses of its sea life in their natural habitat, watching its tangerine sunsets dancing over its rocky landscapes.

Pastry Chef Julie Myrtille brings the art and precision of French cuisine to Austin. WORDS BY

As the youngest female Pastry Chef to be inducted into the Académie Culinaire de France, a prestigious French culinary organization that recognizes master chefs from around the world, Julie has distinguished herself as a top pastry chef in a male-dominated industry. Now, she’s made her mark in Austin by bringing her French culinary expertise to the city through her eponymous bakery.

aving grown up in France, the art of baking is ingrained in Julie’s way of living. Her baking journey started at a young age as she grew up in the kitchen watching her mother cook and prepare meals entirely from scratch. “I made my first yogurt cake at four years old in kindergarten,” she recalls of the first delicacy she baked herself. After a successful career in finance and marketing in New York City, Julie decided to follow her passion, get back to her roots, and pursue a pastry degree in France. The two-year training program prepares students with the deep technical knowhow and intricacies of French pastries. “The work of a pastry chef requires high technicality, in which discipline and precision do not leave room for chance,” explains Julie. “When baking a pastry from scratch, layer by layer, every minute counts.” In 2016, Julie opened her farmer’s market booth to introduce her internationally-recognized cu46 EASTside | Fall/Winter 2021

In the few short years since opening, the bakery, and Julie herself, have already received numerous awards, recognitions, and achievements.

While Julie is dedicated to bringing a piece of France to Austin, she also finds inspiration in the local flavors and preferences of those who patronize her shop. While French cuisine remains at the forefront of Julie Myrtille Bakery, she admits, “Bakeries are a local business, and they have to adapt to the local taste.”

Ice cream’s dessertly origins date to the 16th century, and it continues to pique palettes of almost every persuasion. This treat is simply delightful and undeniably persistent, much like Chef Jam Sanitchat herself, the creator and owner of Gati.

ati is East Austin’s first fully-vegan ice cream shop boasting bold and delicate flavors like Lavender Caramel, Thai Basil, Cookie Monster, and Beet Chocolate Cake—plus an assortment of vegan/gluten-free baked goods and coffee. Jam, who also owns South Austin staple Thai Fresh along with her husband, Bruce, has been experimenting with coconut milk-based ice cream at the restaurant for quite some time, working with flavors that the restaurant already had on hand. She noticed local ice cream shops attracting lines out the door and was convinced she had a comparable product that could stand on its own.

Jam’s prevailing “take life as it comes” attitude has already brought her a bounty. She’s a
wife and a mother, a teacher and a chef, a business owner and an author. She moved from Thailand to Austin in 2001 to finish her Master’s in Communications at UT, with plans to pursue a PhD. While at UT, she began teaching cooking classes in homes. She also found love waiting tables, where she met her husband-to-be. So instead of following the academic path, she decided to see where her passions would take her, though it wasn’t easy. In order to stay on her student visa, she had to enroll in classes, so she signed up for culinary courses at ACC— past the deadline. “I had to beg them. I went there three times before they said ‘yes,’” Jam recalls fondly. Soon, Jam was teaching cooking classes out of the space that eventually became Thai Fresh, a full-blown restaurant born out of high demand for her culinary creations. Jam also ran

farmer’s markets, got married, and had a baby, all while growing her business. Gati represents a step towards simplicity, a platform she can expand on as she looks forward to not working so much. There are fewer moving parts to an ice cream shop, and she thinks she can easily expand across Texas and into other states—hopefully growing her already close-knit community. Community is an integral part of what she loves about Austin and is something that’s embedded in all her ventures. “The community here is so tight—it makes me afraid to move away, when I think about it,” she admits. “But community will be there if you’re serious about it. You get what you give,” she grins.
