I would like to personally like to invite you and welcome you to our first annual Brand of Excellence bull sale. This is our first annual sale, but we have all been involved in many other sales and have been selling bulls privately for a long time. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with some great people along the way and am excited to have my first annual bull sale. This has been a goal of mine ever since I got started over twenty years ago. My consignors are no strangers to the Simmental breed and have been selling high quality genetics for longer than I have. Roberts Simmentals have been neighbors to me and my family before I was born! They are the reason I got started with the Simmental breed. They have a great set of bulls and I know have a lot of repeat customers and they stand behind what they raise and their customer service is second to none. Volk Livestock, Dean Volk, is no stranger to the Simmental breed either. His family has been raising high quality cattle for 40 some years. I know Dean has great taste in cattle and has a donor and bull line up that would make many breeders envious. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage diet that includes ADM’s Amino Gain which benefits the longevity of these bulls, and helps with internal organ mass and helps with fertility and eliminates problems of these bulls in the future. We like to feed these bulls to keep them looking like breeding cattle and not like they are ready to go on the truck to Tyson. We all know the markets haven’t been as strong as they have been in the past, but they seem to be regaining momentum all the time. I feel this is a time where high quality genetics really does pay to have them getting the few extra pounds to making better replacement heifers and getting those few extra dollars as a guy can get. We love talking about all aspects’ of the cattle industry and talking about cattle, so give us a call with any further more questions. This bull without a doubt in my mind is the best bulls that I have raised and maybe I am a little barn blind but I think will be one of the best bulls to sell all year. He started out being Winter Calf Champion at the Iowa State Fair and the Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Bull at the Nebraska State Fair. He is cool looking and huge middle and loaded with performance and fleshing ability. He is as big legged and footed of one that I have seen, but yet so smooth jointed to make him a freak in my mind. I don’t think you will find a stouter or hairier half blood bull anywhere and keeps it all together in a sound package. Member of Denver Pen.

Here is a real meat and potatoes kind of bull. Might be one of the deepest bodied bulls I have raised. He is packed full of muscle and will add a lot of performance to any herd. BC Lookout cattle just seem to work well when crossed with Simmental cows. He is one of my favorites in the sale.

Here is a purebred that is out of our deceased herd bull LRS Turning Point. There were just a few calves out of this bull but they all are long bodied and performance orientated cattle. BULL BUYERS GUIDE Definitions of Terms Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning wt. due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI Indexes First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described to the left, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an allpurpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more information, visit www.simmental.org.
