New location gets rave reviews! The move to Haas Livestock was clearly a good one judging by the massive crowd and compliments. This year the Minnesota Simmental Association took a very progressive step and changed locations for the annual meeting and sale to Haas Livestock, Cannon Falls with the banquet being held at Treasure Island Resort and Casino. Breeders and buyers alike complimented the facilities stating how nice it was to see the cattle in a more natural environment. The new location also provided the opportunities for Internet bidding, which was voted on at the annual meeting,

Breeder Spotlight: Sherwood Cattle Co, Magnolia, MN Tell us about your current operation and how long you have been breeding Simmental genetics: Sherwood Cattle Company located in the very southwest corner of Minnesota consists of Jim & Betty Sherwood and Cody & Samantha Sherwood. Jim has been raising cattle his entire life and officially joined the Simmental Association in 1980. Cody became a Simmental member in 1995. They currently run approximately 150 cows consisting of purebred Simmental, Angus and Sim-Angus genetics. The cattle operation uses extensive embryo transfer and A.I. which is a tremendous factor on the progression of herd quality and production. Sherwood Cattle Company has an annual fall sale selling Simmental and Angus heifers. They are maternally bred females that not only excel in the show ring, but go on to make tremendous and productive cows. Crossbred steers and heifers are also sold on the fall sale, consigned by a family friend. A variety of calves can be viewed any time prior to the sale by all types of cattle enthusiasts. They also are a guest partner to the Jewels of the Northland Sale in December. January is the start of bull sales via private treaty and continues throughout the spring.

Who got you into using Simmental Genetics? When Jim was young he worked a winter in Denver at the Denver Union Stockyards during the National Western when the “exotics” first hit the U.S. Seeing the various new breeds and visiting with ranchers who had used several breeds it was an easy choice to go Simmental.

What was the first Simmental Bull you used? After using A.I. and seeing a huge difference in the Simmental calves and those out of the clean up bulls, it was an easy decision to upgrade to “Simmental” clean up bulls. A big influence on the herd was purchasing two yellow and white Signal sons from Matt Sutton of Agar, SD.
