Another year has passed - they seem to just speed up! When I first started working with Dr. Melvin Pettit raising Simmentals, I never thought that 45 years later all my dreams would come true! I couldn’t imagine that I would have assembled my own cow herd and raise enough bulls to have my own sale! It has been a roller coaster ride, but seeing where we have come from and then going out and walking through our bulls 45 years later, it tells me that all those years of hard work and dedication were well worth it! This year’s 40th annual bull sale offering continues to fit the mold we strive for…”Performance Cattle with a Touch of Style,” and to top it off, check out their numbers! We feel very strongly that our bulls are perfect for today’s industry. We strive to have high performing cattle that still maintain adequate calving ease. Another main focus at Trauernicht Simmentals is high fertility and maternal cattle. I know not every one of you keep your own heifers, but if you do, feel confident that they will work well. As always, we strive to be very service-oriented and would be more than happy to assist you with marketing your calves and LHT Brand slaughter bulls. We continue to get calls back from several of the first LHT sired heifers – people just can’t believe the quality of cows they are making and they want more! With the high calf prices, it has been a challenge to find enough LHT Brand sired calves to fill the orders I have. Please don’t hesitate to call me if we can help you market your calves, as there is a demand for them. Darrin Minge continues to work as our LHT Brand Livestock Specialist. Going into his 4th year at Trauernicht Simmentals, he is truly committed to our program. We couldn’t do it without him! He has been a huge asset to our operation. He has steadily improved our conception rates through his dedication to heat detection and proper nutrition programs. Additionally, he continues to look for way to improve efficiency by having the whole cow herd calve much tighter and get more AI calves every year. Bull Buyers Guide Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI Indexes First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described to the left, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). Definitions of Terms Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.
