by ERICA SOMMER
Greetings, librarians!
As usual in the northeast, fall has flown by, we are donning coats and hats and, at least in my case, eagerly awaiting spring. We’ve been working on several new initiatives in Brodart Youth Services, so I’ll dig right in.
First up, we hope you will join librarians Suzy Hawley, Jack Phoenix, Gwen Vanderhage, and I for the upcoming Tell Me More: Collection Connection webinar on January 4th at 2PM EST, highlighting forthcoming children’s and young adult titles from the first half of 2023 that you won’t want to miss! Register here.
This fall we launched the BookWorm monthly youth services newsletter, featuring staff-reviewed new titles and series, selection lists for current topics and themes, including Spanish language titles and graphic novels, and a Did You Miss It section of well-inventoried titles perfect for last-minute spending needs. Subscribe here in time for our ALA Youth Media Awards special edition!
Erica Sommer is the manager of Brodart's Children’s & Young Adult Programs. She is excited to share her insights in article form as a featured LittleOne contributor. Check our upcoming issues for more from Erica!
In other exciting news, our Summer Reading Incentives list, offering discounted prices on bulk orders for your summer reading program prizes, has arrived! The list features picture books, early chapter, middle grade fiction, graphic novels, and teen titles. These include popular series and characters - such as Bluey, Llama Llama, and The Last Kids on Earth – as well as award-winning authors like John Green, Victoria Jamieson, Tae Keller, Celia Perez, Nic Stone, and Jacqueline Woodson, to name a few! To learn more, contact us.
Our Youth Services webpage will feature Summer Reading resources tying to the prize titles as they become available in spring. Be sure to check out the page now, as we’ve loaded many useful downloadable book club discussion guides and activity kits for your programming needs. You’ll find these in the Resources section already. Each time new items are added, we’ll announce on Facebook, so be the first to know by following Brodart Youth Services.
As we head into 2023, I want to applaud each and every one of you for continuing to make the young people in your communities feel worthwhile, by sharing books and resources that provide multicultural awareness, letting them see themselves or who they want to be in what they read. By offering a sense of belonging no matter what their beliefs, and for standing strong against censorship, giving countless hours of your time to respond to challenges, often outside of your normal work hours. You give us purpose. As Fred Rogers said, "The world needs a sense of worth, and it will achieve it only by its people feeling that they are worthwhile." Thank you.
I look forward to working with you to meet your youth services collection and programming needs. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me at BYS@brodart. com, and I’ll be in touch soon.
