L I B R A R I E S TO DAY

Have Time on Your Side by Cindy Kolaczynski — Owner CJK Consulting

Time is life’s most precious resource. I often wonder where did the time go today? Why wasn’t I able to accomplish all I had wanted to? And in addition to everyday life challenges, we now have the COVID-19 pandemic added to the mix. Not only are some of us faced with working in different environments or in isolation, but our tasks have changed. We have had to pivot abruptly and often. How are all these changes impacting how we manage our time? I recently retired as a Library Director and immediately began consulting. I suddenly found myself outside of a structured office schedule. I had to reevaluate and then rethink how my time was being managed. I gained some insight that may be of help.

Cindy Kolaczynski has over twenty years of library experience, in both public and school libraries. Before recently creating CJK Consulting, LLC, Cindy was the Director/ County Librarian at Maricopa County Library District.

First, I had to evaluate how I was spending my time, so I did a time audit. I literally recorded what I was doing and for how long for a week. This was eye opening! What I thought I was spending 30 minutes a day completing was taking sometimes more than double that time. I could clearly see how I was spending and, in some cases, wasting my time. It enabled me to identify tasks that deserve more time and eliminate those that were not the best use of my time. I was able to control, change, modify and discard some of my tasks. I set time limits. For me setting time limits keeps me focused so I am not easily distracted (especially now as we face so many distractions) and does not allow me to procrastinate.

maybe most challenging tasks first thing in the morning. It is always easier to get the MITs (most important tasks) checked off so that feeling of accomplishment gets you through the rest of the day. Some other strategies I find helpful to manage time include removing distractions, especially if working in a new environment. Designate workspaces if working from home and get that space organized. Do not multitask, work on one thing at a time. Have a routine. It is important to remember to recharge your mental, physical, and emotional batteries every day. Include a timed break or a buffer between tasks to rest your mind and body. And find inspiration. Some of us are working in isolation and that makes it difficult to play off the energy and ideas of our coworkers. Use what motivates you to stay on track. If like me, you find yourself struggling with not having enough time in your day, you may want to pick a couple of these strategies to start with and see if it helps you get time on your side. Enjoy your day and be well.

I also learned to plan ahead. Before ending work for the day, I jot down a list of prioritized tasks for the next day. This enables me to tackle the biggest and SPRING 2021 | ISSUE 01

HIGHLIGHT

— Spanish language titles for your libraries

Spanish Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the U.S., with over 21% of the population speaking it. The population is a mix of Europeans and North Americans. There are a few things to consider when adding Spanish titles or creating a new collection. Without a Spanish speaking selector on staff, then choosing popular titles from a range of subjects can be a challenging and delicate process. Similar to choosing books in English, it’s important to know where materials are coming from. Other questions that need to be

considered are the country of origin, the quality of the dialect, and if the content is appropriate for library. We know that readers look for titles that are about their own interests, for non-fiction titles topics like health, cooking, nutrition, childcare and parenting. You'll also find fiction titles where the writing is interesting, exciting and entertaining. Graphic novels and comic books have been invaluable in getting young readers engaged in reading. Popular translated titles have also proven to be favorites.
